Primary 6 31.05.17

Hello everyone, we can’t believe that it’s almost June already!

Everyone has been working very hard in Primary 6 this past week. In writing, we have been working on persuasive writing. Last week the children created advertisements for their favourite place to visit. The children thought about adjectives to describe the place, a catchphrase that would stick in people’s minds and learned how to use rhetorical questions to convince people that their destination was the best. This week the children will try to persuade the reader of their text of their opinion of school uniform. We are sure this will be a fun and interesting debate!

As part of our inclusion topic we took advantage of the lovely weather last week and went outside to try and experience what it might be like to be physically disabled. The children were able to experience walking blindfolded, using noise cancelling headphones, using a wheelchair unaided and using crutches. The children were able to discuss some of the difficulties that they were presented with when trying to negotiate the playground. This week we will be learning about how society and the local community support those with physical and mental disabilities.

Three children in P6 (Daisy, Luci and Rhianna) made us all very proud this week. They made a group decision that they wanted to raise money for school funds in order to buy equipment for the playground. So on Sunday the girls ran from Dechmont Law to Dobbies and back in order to raise the money. They went around the classes last week asking for any donations and ended up raising a massive £125.10!! We are so proud of the girls for making the decision to do this and organising the entire event themselves. Well done girls! We will let you know what Luci, Daisy and Rhianna choose to spend the money on 🙂

Primary 6 18.5.17

Hello everyone

It has been (yet another!) extremely busy week in Primary 6 this week.

On Tuesday we visited Deans Community High School for the children’s first visit as they begin the transition from Primary School to High School. The children were met in the hall by Mrs Mordaunt (The head of S1 and S2) who introduced the children to the school, told them about their day and answered a few questions. The children then followed a short timetable attending a variety of different subjects such as PSE, English, Maths, Science, PE and Music. The children met new teachers, had experiences of High School classrooms and were allowed to discuss worries about going to High School but also what they were looking forward to. Every single child that attended behaved excellently and many of the teachers from Deans commented on how polite, well behaved and enthusiastic the children were. They were a credit to the school, their teachers and themselves. Well done everyone! The children’s next visit to Deans will be in November when they are in P7.

This week the children have also been working on booklets for their future P1 buddy. These booklets have been started by the school office staff and are created for P1 children and their parents. Primary 6 have the job of filling in important information and then decorating their future buddy’s booklet. The children are really taking their time to make these booklets fantastic. We can’t wait to see the finished products. The children will meet their buddies in June.

In PE the children have been continuing with the Futsal programme with their instructor Neil. They have also been taking part in different activities related to Athletics in Outdoor PE. So far the children have looked at sprinting, endurance running and hurdling. Please remember that children should have their PE kit with them on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Primary 6 11.05.17

Hello everyone

We hope you have had a lovely week. This week has been an excellent week in Primary 6. The children have been working hard in all areas of the curriculum and have been impressing us all!

In maths, Miss Clark’s groups have been practising their addition and subtraction strategies. They have been using empty number lines to help them add and subtract larger numbers mentally. Ask your child to show you this at home 🙂 The children have also been working hard to say their times tables more quickly and accurately. We have been practising lots in class. Test your child at home and see what they know? 🙂 Natalia is our new “Beat the Buddy” champion! We are all very impressed with her times table knowledge!

Today in Primary 6 we had a special visit from the Primary 7 pupils who shared with us some posters and information leaflets they had created about how to be a good buddy. You’ll see some pictures of this visit below. The children received their “Buddy Booklets” today which they will be making to give to their Primary 1 buddies in June. The children are all looking forward to being buddies and we are sure they will take on their responsibilities maturely.

As part of our topic we have been learning about how we are all different and yet how we are all equally important. We have discussed certain types of disabilities and how they can impact on people’s lives. We have also discussed how we can help others who have mental, sensory or physical disabilities. The children in Miss Clark’s class have begun to research different types of disabilities so that they can create information posters for others. We look forward to seeing the final results.

In French, the children have been learning how to tell the time using o’clock and half past times. Next week we will explore the times quarter past and quarter to. The children have also been practising writing French words and phrases through the creation of calendars.

Primary 6 05.05.17

Hello everyone

We hope the children have had an enjoyable couple of days off school this week.

This week the children continued with the Living and Growing programme. They have been learning about the changes that happen in our bodies, particularly girls’ bodies, as we grow older. If you have any queries about this programme please do not hesitate to ask.

In PE we have been participating in Athletics based activities. All of the activities this week involved sprinting. The children also researched one of 3 Olympians/Paralympians: Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis-Hill or Ellie Simmonds. The children then used this research to write detailed biographies about their chosen athlete. We discussed the skills and qualities that athletes need to develop in order to become successful. We linked these to our work on Athletics in PE. Next week we will move onto jumping activities.

Next week, the children will take part in a Judo taster session on Tuesday morning. They will also have Futsal as normal on Tuesday and Outdoor PE on Wednesday. Please remind your child to bring full PE kit (including trainers) to school on these days.

On Tuesday 16th May the children will be making their first visit to Deans Community High School as part of their transition to High School next year. We will be at the high school from 9:15-12:20 and we will be back at Carmondean in time for lunch as normal. Children can take a snack with them up to the high school too.

Primary 6 27.4.17

Hello everyone

This week has been a busy week in Primary 6. We have been continuing to rehearse for our assembly tomorrow. We hope you can make it to see our final performance in the new school hall tomorrow at 11:30am. The children have been working so hard and we hope you enjoy our assembly.

This week we began learning about our new topic of Inclusion. We will explore how life can be challenging for different groups of people and how we can work to include others. Today we discussed the definition of the word inclusion and also how rules in society can be used to include or exclude people. We are looking forward to learning more about how we can be inclusive citizens.

In writing this week we wrote newspaper articles about our role in planning and organising the school’s Red Nose Day event this year. We learned that we all helped to raise a massive £1070.42 for the children in Africa and the UK that need it most. The newspaper articles are looking fabulous and we are looking forward to seeing the final finished products!

Our PE times have changed slightly from the information given last week. We will now have a Futsal instructor coming into school every Tuesday morning to work with the children. Both classes can come to school dressed in their PE kit with their school uniforms in their bag. Futsal will take place on a Tuesday morning with Outdoor PE on a Wednesday morning.

Please remember that each week your child is given both spelling and maths homework. Miss Clark’s class will also soon be given weekly reading homework. Homework is usually due in on a Thursday or Friday. Please ask your child about this.

Primary 7 – 21.04.17

Welcome to the last term in P7 and primary school for the children!

The children have been choosing their best piece of writing to enter the Young Writer competition. These have been sent away and fingers crossed we will have a winner!

Miss Lindsay from DCHS was in school on Wednesday working with the children on Didbook. The children will be identifying their strengths and next steps for high school. When the children receive their loin and password you will be able to read at home what they have written. This was all explained at the information meeting which took place last term.

Miss Thompson completed her final visit with P7W – the focus was on Algebra. The children were able to solve simple Algebraic equations. Initially the children were slightly apprehensive about this but by the end they were very confident!

PE this term will be on a Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure our child has appropriate kit for these days.

In health we will be using the Living and Growing resource to review the physical and emotional changes that take place at the onset of puberty. We will be looking at the development of relationships and how they can interact appropriately with others. You will receive a letter about this shortly.

The children will be working on their My Life So Far each Thursday for the next few weeks. Please ensure your child brings all/part of their project so that they can continue to work on it in class as well as at home.

Yesterday the children received information about the Residential to France. Please ensure the relevant sheets are returned to school as soon as possible. If your child will need medication, please ensure the relevant form ahs been filled in before hand.

Hello everyone

We hope you had a lovely Easter break. We are glad to have the children back and we are looking forward to an exciting last term in Primary 6.

This week we have been busy practising for our assembly which will take place next Friday 28th April in the new school hall. The assembly will begin at 11:30am. You should have received 2 letters regarding the assembly. If you are planning on attending the assembly could you please send the slip back to the school as soon as possible detailing how many people will be attending. The children have also been asked to wear black trousers/leggings/jeans and a white t-shirt/shirt for the performance. Children can bring these clothes into school during the week next week in a carrier bag or can wear them to school on Friday for the performances. The children have been working very hard on this assembly and we can’t wait for you to see it! All children have received a section of the script and song lyrics home to practise. Any support you could provide your child with this would be much appreciated.

You should also have received a letter about our upcoming use of the Living & Growing programme in both Primary 6 classes. If you have any questions about this programme then please do not hesitate to contact us as soon as possible.

Indoor PE – Wednesday

Please note that for next week only the children will have their second PE time on Thursday instead of Wednesday.

week beginning 17.4.17

Welcome back to the Primary 4 blog!

We hope you have all had a lovely holiday and are looking forward to our final term of Primary 4.

This term our topic will be mini-beasts and our community. We will be learning about vertebrates, invertebrates, food chains, insects and lots more. We will be studying a wormery and also be observing the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly.

In language we will be focusing on the writing of Enid Blyton. This year celebrates her 75th anniversary so we shall be looking at her style of writing, her characters and how she develops her stories to keep the reader’s interest. We will be creating our own famous five novels throughout the term. If you have any of her Famous Five books that you would be happy to lend us, please send them in.

We are keen for parents / carers to hear children reading aloud when completing reading homework. Children will come home with a reading book within the next week. This will be given alongside a letter with the assigned pages for each week and some ideas for discussions and questions to ask your child during and after reading.

This term is very exciting as it is also the term where we will prepare and perform a show along with the Primary 5s. There are lots of different roles in the show like acting, singing, dancing, instruments and sound effects. Please keep an eye out for any lines or costumes that your child has to prepare for.

We are happy to see you all back from your holidays and hope you are excited to start all these new topics!

Primary 6 23.03.17

Hello everyone!

We hope you’re having a great week. In P6 we have been working extremely hard on the school show. Yesterday was our dress rehearsal. We performed in front of the whole school and the teachers and everyone was very impressed! We are looking forward to showing you our finished performances next Wednesday at 1:30pm or 6:30pm. Tickets are still available from the school office.

Today we celebrated Earth Hour in class. We turned off our classroom lights and other electronic equipment and thought about what we appreciate most about our planet. We created love hearts which include a sentence and picture about our favourite thing about being outside. These are already looking fantastic and we can’t wait to see the finished products.

In writing, P6C have been writing about “The Magic Slide”. The children thought about where their magic slide would take them and what adventures they would go on whilst in their new and magical world. Miss Clark was very impressed with all of the children’s writing. Some of the children’s work will be entered into The West Lothian Young Writer of the Year Competition. Work will also be entered into the competition for children from P6KW. We will let you know how this goes 🙂

The children have been working hard in class on their Titanic Fact Files. These personal projects have been completed in class time and also at home. Please note that these projects are due in at the end of next week. Please encourage your child to complete their project at home and at school on time. If children need any materials to complete this then they can collect them from the classroom. Thank you for your support with this.

Primary 1 w.b. 20.3.17

This Friday is Red Nose Day. Your child is welcome to come to school wearing red, white or black, or dressing up as one of the red nose characters. There will be a bake sale run by the primary 6s. Children can buy a cake from here on Friday. Throughout the week Primary 6s will also be selling red noses in class.
Last week Brambleberry came to visit the primary 1s. On Thursday we came in to a letter from Brambleberry telling us that his forest was damaged by litter. He has come to live in our enchanted forest in the classroom. We will be looking at the problems of littering to help him return to his home.
In maths we are going to be learning number names (one, two, three etc) up to 10. Please encourage your child to practise these at home.
Reminders:
Water bottles should contain only water and not juice.
Please make sure that your child has indoor gym shoes in school.
Indoor gym is on Wednesday for the next 2 weeks. Please come with an indoor kit on this day.
The PSA is organising an Easter egg hunt next Wednesday. This costs £1 to take part. Please send in your permission slip and money as soon as possible.

Primary 4 10.3.17

In P4S last week we used our knowledge of fractions to play fun games online. We have enjoyed learning about fractions and in our number talks, we are becoming more confident in explaining our strategies.

We have been busy practising for our Scotland assembly. We have songs, acting, poems, power points, dancing and history included. Our assembly is on Friday 17th at 11.30 in our brand new hall. We hope to see you there.

It was our last week with the students from West Lothian College teaching us a variety of skills in P.E. We want to say a big thank you for their time and input.

We learned about Burke and Hare in our topic time. We learned about medical instruments used by people during this time. We also learned a poem:

P1/2 Week beginning 27.2.17

Good morning from P1/2

Last week was the busiest week ever. We had our HMI inspection and our children were very excited to welcome the inspectors to our class. The children were very well behaved and worked hard throughout the week as always creating a very good impression so well done to you all.

Last week Miss Miller joined our class. She is a student from Edinburgh university and will be working with us till the summer.

In topic last week we were learning about the effects of the weather. We talked about how different types of weather affect us. We also learned about different weather symbols and produced our own weather forecasts.

In Maths primary 1 were learning to order, count and recognise numbers to 20. Primary 2 were learning to measure the area of objects. they enjoyed completing a challenge to see who could make a kite closest in area to 20 counters.

In writing we learned about the legend of the Kelpie and have started writing our own stories. We also made Kelpie stones out of clay.

On Thursday it will be world book day. The children have been asked to bring their favourite book to school that day to share with the class.

Remember to bring gym kit on Thursday.

Last week Primary 1 had a great week consolidating their learning on dinosaurs. The children created a dinosaur land map in groups of 2 and 3, they then learnt how to program bee bots to travel over their land. The children also completed a critical skills challenge creating an information poster about a dinosaur in pairs.
In maths the children have been learning about numbers to 20. Last week they practised ordering numbers and finding the number before, after and between. This week they focus on counting out sets. Thank you for your help at home with this.
This Thursday is World Book Day. Please can your child bring in a book from home on Thursday for a primary 7 to read to them.
Reminders:
PE is on a Thursday, please remember to bring a PE kit to school.
Some children don’t have indoor shoes to wear in class, please ensure that your child has shoes which fit.
Library books will be given out on a Monday. This only needs to be returned on the Friday. Class reading books should be brought to school everyday.

Primary 1 w.b.20.2.17

Thank you to everyone who brought in their ‘Big Homework’ task this morning. The model dinosaurs look amazing! We look forward to hearing how they were made later in the week.
Our trip to ‘Our Dynamic Earth’ last week was very successful. The children took part in an excellent workshop learning about different dinosaurs and looking at models of fossils. We also had a chance to look around the exhibition, the children loved touching the iceberg.
This week we will be continuing our dinosaur topic. The children will be completing a poster challenge to show their learning over the term so far.
In maths we will be focusing on numbers to 20. The children will be ordering numbers forwards and backwards and finding the missing numbers in a sequence. Thank you for your help at home with this.

This week in P6

Hello everyone

We hope you had a lovely week.

This week Primary 6 have been continuing to rehearse for the P6/7 show “Alice in Wonderland”. Rehearsals are going very well so far and we are pleased that children have been practising their lines. We are now practising on the stage in the new hall and look forward to you seeing the performance in March. Please remember that it is expected that all children attend both the afternoon and evening performances. If there is a problem with this can you please let the school know as soon as possible, thank you.

The children have been continuing to work on their Titanic Fact Files in class. Children may also choose to bring these home to complete. You will find the criteria sheet inside their poly pocket. Please note this project is due in on the last week of term before the Easter Holidays.

In Health, the children have been learning about how to keep safe in different situations. Next week we will discuss peer pressure, the impact it can have on people’s lives and different strategies that we can use to avoid risky situations.

The P6 residential Dalguise is only 2 weeks away! Can all children who are attending this residential please make sure they hand back residential rules form and EE2 form (blue letters) to the school as soon as possible. If your child needs to take any medication to Dalguise a separate form will need to be filled out. Please contact the office for more details.

In PE we will be focussing on the skills of touch rugby whilst in the school hall. Outside, we will be creating new playground games for younger children in the school. Please remember that our PE days are Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor) and that children should come properly prepared for both sessions.
Indoor PE Kit – shorts/trousers, t-shirt, indoor shoes
Outdoor PE Kit – old trousers, t-shirt, warm jumper/hoodie, trainers (no school shoes please).

Please also remember that indoor shoes must be worn by all children during time in the classroom/PE halls.

Primary 4 week beginning 20.2.17

Welcome back after our short February break. We hope you a had a lovely time.

We would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended parents evening. We would like to remind anyone who could not make it to feel free to make an appointment at another time that is more convenient.

This week we have started to look more closely at the features of non-fiction texts. We will be continuing to learn about them and use them in various lessons across the curriculum. If you have access to any books at home, please ask your child to teach you about their features.

We have continued to learn about electricity in science and have been experimenting with conductors and insulators this week. Next week we will be planning to build our own homes with working circuits in them.

Next week we will also be learning about comic life in I.C.T. We are hoping eventually, to create our own comics we made when we were learning about D.C Thompson and Dundee using the Comic Life software.

We are looking forward to having lots of visitors in our school next week and showing them all of our hard work.

Primary 1 w.b. 30.1.17

Primary 1 had a very busy week last week.
In maths, the children have started learning about subtraction. We have been looking at the concept of taking objects away and this week will begin to complete written sums. As part of this learning, we are revising numbers 1-20. The children are putting the numbers in order on a number line and are finding the number before and after. Any work you can do at home to practise numbers 1-20 will be helpful for your child.
In science we have begun learning about electricity. The children were very interested to learn and talk about the dangers associated with electricity in the house. We all created safety posters which you will be able to see at parent consultations.
This week we will be continuing our work on dinosaurs. We will be researching and writing about the triceratops. We will also begin our next topic in health, looking at medicine and how to keep our bodies safe.

Primary 1/2 week beginning 30.1.17

Primary 1/2 have had another busy week.

We have been learning about Scottish traditions. We have learned how to make porridge and enjoyed tasting it. On Wednesday we had our own Burns Supper where we ate haggis, tatties and neeps and sang Auld Lang Syne. We also designed our own tartan and drew thistles using pastels. On Friday we wrote super descriptions about Nessie. We are looking forward to taking part in the Burns concert for our visitors this afternoon.

Our new gym day this term is Thursday please remember to bring gym kit and a water bottle that day.

We are hoping to make some small model houses for our Island of Struay wall frieze this week. Some children have already brought in some small boxes. It would be appreciated if we could have some more by Wednesday.

Primary 1 w.b. 23/1/17

Primary 1 did a good job last week learning and reciting their Scots poems. Well done to Frazer, Heather, Connor and Amber who presented their poem to the whole school in the new gym hall. They should be very proud of their achievement.
We were very excited to have Google Expeditions at our school last Monday. The children experienced a virtual visit under the sea to explore marine life.
This week we are continuing our interdisciplinary topic on dinosaurs. We will be writing a fact file about the Diplodocus and creating our very own fossils.
In Maths we will be starting our focus on subtraction. Pupils will be exploring the concept using concrete materials.
Reminders:
Please ensure that your child brings named gym rubbers to school to wear in class. We are hoping to keep our gym hall clean and so outdoor shoes will not be allowed in. Please can you check that your child’s shoes fit properly and that the straps stay on!
Outdoor PE will be on a Monday so please ensure that your child comes to school with a warm jacket and shoes they can run in. Indoor PE will be on a Thursday and children need a PE kit for this.

Primary 1 w.b. 9/1/2017

Welcome back after the Christmas Holidays. We hope that you all had a lovely break.
We had a good first week back. The children began to learn about Dinosaurs, the interdisciplinary topic for this term. An egg was delivered to Primary 1 for the children to look after with a note from Professor Rex. We decided that it was a dinosaur egg and so the children have started learning about dinosaurs so they can look after the egg better.
In maths this week we will be learning about the months of the year and about clocks and how to read the o’clock time. Any help you can give your child in learning the months of the year and spotting clocks around the house would be greatly appreciated.
Reminders:
This term we will be doing outdoor PE on a Monday and indoor PE with Miss Inglis on a Thursday. Please remember to bring a named PE kit for these sessions.
Homework will resume again this week. The children will be getting 2 Scots poems home with them today. Please choose 1 poem to learn by Wednesday 18th January. Each child will recite their chosen poem in class on this day. One child will be selected from each class to perform in front of the school on the Friday.
Every child took home their inside gym rubbers for Christmas. Please remember to bring indoor shoes back into school as soon as possible.
