Primary 4 1.12.18

Hello everyone

Primary 4 had a very exciting week! The children worked very well in their enterprise groups to finish their products. Human Resources did an excellent job at supporting every group while Accounts calculated our profit; Quality Control worked on repairing bottles; Marketing picked our company logo and Advertising chose the best posters to be displayed. The reindeer sweetie bottles have now arrived home. Thank you all for your support of our Enterprise Project. It was a very valuable experience for the children to take part in.

Our PE days are changing. There will be a note in homework diaries about this on Monday. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on Wednesdays. Outdoor PE will remain on a Tuesday. We also look forward to art lessons with Ms Fox starting on Wednesday also. The children will no longer take part in the weekly mile on a Friday. This will reconvene in the summer term.

In writing the children worked very hard to create excellent beginnings to their story “The Magic Collar”. Earlier in the week the children had enjoyed exploring a story all about Lumi the dog with the magical collar who spent time with Santa and his reindeer in the North Pole. The children then wrote their own stories about dogs with magical collars trying their best to write in full sentences and include some of our special trickier “boost” words (glimmering, whirled, drifted and anticipation) in their own writing. The children worked fantastically well and these stories will be a fabulous read when they are completed. 🙂

Reminders –

Christmas lunch is on Tuesday 4th. The children will watch a pantomime in school on Monday 3rd 🙂
Children should read their reading pages by Monday 3rd December please.
Spelling homework will be given out on Monday and due in on Friday.
There will be no maths homework this week.

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend.

Hello everyone

We have had a lovely week in Primary 4. Our Enterprise topic is in full swing! The children were allocated jobs within our business “The Reindeer Club” and created ID badges to show who they are and the role they play. Today, the children created our product – Reindeer Sweetie Jars. They are looking fantastic! The children worked so well with lots of different materials and listened carefully to instructions. We will decide upon what sweeties the jars will contain next week and then our finished products will be complete!

In maths we have been learning how to mentally subtract 2 digit numbers using a variety of strategies. We have been using a hundred square effectively to speed up our calculations. Next week we will be mentally subtracting within 3 digit numbers.

Next week there will be no Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson. PE with Mrs Ferguson will resume the following week however our Indoor PE day will change from a Thursday to a Wednesday afternoon. This information will be in the children’s homework diary closer to the time. Outdoor PE will stay on a Tuesday.

The Christmas Fair will take place next Friday 30th November. Please contact the school office for tickets. We look forward to seeing lots of you there 🙂

Hello everyone

We have had a busy but interesting week in Primary 4.

In maths we have been learning how to answer subtraction questions using the written method. The children have been working hard to exchange when they do not have the number of ones required. We have also been practising quick recall of subtraction facts within 20. Please practise these facts with your child at home.

In writing we wrote scripts in groups of 3. We were telling imaginative stories about the Vikings we had created previously. The children worked very hard to incorporate stage directions into their scripts. They also used colons when introducing what a character was about to say. Next week the children will act out their scripts in front of an audience. We can’t wait to see the finished products!

We began exploring our new topic of Enterprise this week. The children discussed what they wanted to learn and how they want to learn. They also came up with some ideas for the name of our company and filled in job application forms for different roles within our business. We will be making reindeer sweetie bottles to sell to family and friends. The children are very excited and we’re sure that the finished products will be fabulous! 🙂

The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. Tickets are available from the school office or able to be purchased on the night.

Letters were sent out earlier this week for the school Christmas Lunch. This will take place on Tuesday 4th December. Children should order their lunch by next Wednesday or they will not be able to have a Christmas lunch on this day. If your child does not wish to have a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school on this day.

Hello everyone

We’ve had a good week in Primary 4 so far. In writing we finished writing our fabulous Halloween stories and they are fantastic. They were filled with adjectives, exciting details and spooky characters! Well done boys and girls!

In reading the children have been working hard to read their books carefully looking for tricky words. They have then been beginning to use a dictionary to search for the definitions of these words in order to develop their understandings. This task has been challenging but the children have been working so hard and are developing their ability to use a dictionary quickly and effectively.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day in Primary 4 as we host our “Viking Bake Off” event. Miss Millar and Mr Shanks will judge our creations! The children will make sweet oat cakes with honey and will get to taste their own handiwork! We can’t wait to see how they turn out 🙂

Christmas Fair letters have now been sent home along with raffle tickets. The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. You can buy tickets by returning the tear off slip to school or speaking to office staff.

Hello everyone
We have had a very busy week in Primary 4! We just performed our Harvest Assembly to Primaries 5, 6 and 7. The children sang beautifully and performed spectacularly! We were very proud teachers 🙂 Well done everyone!

Parents’ nights are next Wednesday from 5-7:30pm and Thursday from 4-6:30pm. We are looking forward to meeting with you then. If you haven’t booked an appointment yet please contact the school office.

In PE the children have been developing their skills in Handball. They have been working very well as part of small teams. On Wednesday 31st October we will all be attending a Handball Festival and playing games against other schools. Keep practising P4! 🙂

This week we have been learning about the science of floating and sinking. We discussed what items we thought might float or sink and there were a few surprises! We learned that the weight of the objects wasn’t always important but that the materials the objects were made out of and their DENSITY were very important. Today we are using Plasticine to make Viking long boats. We will then test them to see if they float!

Next week there will be no spelling homework. This will resume again after the October Holidays. Maths homework will be a task on the website “Studyladder”. Children have their username and password in their homework diaries.

Hello everyone

We have had a short but busy week so far in Primary 4! Yesterday we continued learning about Vikings. We learned about how long ships were constructed and the materials that Vikings used to make them. We also learned why it was important that they were so long and narrow. Ask your child if they can tell you why! 🙂 We then continued working on our Viking display by painting a long ship which the Vikings we painted will fit inside. We can’t wait to see this display come together 🙂

We have been revising the importance of using capital letters and full stops correctly. The children identified special words that we know that require a capital letter (proper nouns). Ask your child if they can tell you about any of these special words 🙂

We are beginning to learn about the festival of Harvest. We will be exploring how different countries celebrate Harvest and we will show our learning through creating and performing a Harvest Assembly on Friday 5th October. Please look out for any lines/song words in your child’s homework diary that they may need to learn for the assembly. Please note that this assembly is a school only assembly. There will be another opportunity later on in the year for you to attend your child’s assembly.

Last week we began working with NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) on music and singing. The children will have a 45 minute session each week until Christmas. This is a great opportunity for the children to learn more about tone, pitch, rhythm and much more!

Primary 4 13.9.18

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely week. We’ve had a busy week in Primary 4.

This week the children created their own Viking character. The children drew their Viking and used descriptive language to describe his/her physical appearance and personality. We then wrote about an adventure that our Viking went on focusing on a problem our Viking encounters and resolving the problem at the end of our story. Soon we will do some drama work related to our Viking characters, acting as if we actually are our character!

In Health we have been learning about the value of honesty. The children discussed why it is important to be honest and how not telling the truth can sometimes cause a lot more trouble. The children then displayed their knowledge which will now form part of a classroom display.

In maths the children have been learning about 2D shapes and patterns. The children are able to identify different 2D shapes and discuss their properties confidently. They will now use their knowledge of pattern and shape to create symmetrical Viking shields. We’re sure they will look fantastic!

There will be no homework next week due to the long September weekend. Spelling/maths homework will resume as normal on Monday 24th September.

Reminders:
PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor). Please ensure that your child has appropriate kit on these days.

Primary 4 30.8.18

Hello everyone

It was lovely to meet so many of you last night at our Meet the Teacher event. Thank you for coming 🙂

Your child should now have been given a newsletter which contains all of the important dates and information for this term. Our PE days will be Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor with Mrs Ferguson). Please ensure your child is prepared appropriately for PE on both these days especially Tuesday when we will be outside as the weather begins to get colder.

Your child will shortly come home with a letter in their bags containing their class charter. The children have agreed that they will respect their rights and the rights of others this year and we would appreciate if you could read this over with your child, sign the tear off slip and return to the school. Thank you for your support with this.

This week we have started looking at our new reading books “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” (P4C) and “The Legend of Spud Murphy” (P4D). These books will not come home and instead the children will read them as a class and complete activities on their book in school. Please continue to encourage your child to read for enjoyment at home. Anytime they finish reading a book please let us know by writing in their homework diary. This book will then be added to our class reading tree. More information about this can be found in the P4 newsletter.

Next week we will hand out spelling and maths homework on Monday. Both pieces of homework will be due in on Friday. Please do not hesitate to speak to us if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 7 31.5.18

Hello everyone

We are approaching a very busy and exciting time in Primary 7! Next week the majority of children will take part in a full week of transition activities up at Deans Community High School. Children should come to Carmondean on Monday morning (4th June) at the regular time of 8:50am. Mrs Macaulay & I will then walk the children up to the high school for around 9:20am where they will meet their tutor group and begin to follow their timetable as they will in August. On Wednesday, the children will take part in an activity called the “Hurricane Challenge” instead of following their timetable. Most of this activity will take place outdoors so the children should attend the High School on that day dressed appropriately for the weather.

IMPORTANT: The children should make their own way up to DCHS for the normal time of 8:30am on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. They will return to Carmondean on Monday 11th June.

Rehearsals for our Leavers Assembly are in full swing and the children are working hard to make props and gifts for the ceremony. Please encourage your child to work on learning any words they need to memorise and also learning the words to the 3 songs that we will be performing at the Leavers Assembly on Wednesday 27th June.

The children have been working very hard both in school and at home to finish and perfect their “My Life so Far” projects that they have been working on since August. The final copies are due in tomorrow and Mrs Macaulay and I are so impressed with the quality of these projects. We can’t wait to see the final projects tomorrow. The children will present them at the upper school assembly later on in June.

Important days/dates:

Outdoor PE: Monday
Outdoor/Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson: Wednesday

Leavers Assembly: Wednesday 27th June @ 1:30pm
Prom: Deer Park Golf & Country Club on Thursday 28th June 6-6:30pm arrival until 9:00pm *Please note* Prom letters have been handed out and should be returned by Monday 11th June.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 7 3.5.18

Hello everyone

We have had a busy week in Primary 7. We had a visit from teachers and students from Deans Community High School today. They told us what it was like to move from Carmondean Primary to Deans High. They also answered any questions the children had about High School. It was a very informative session and very helpful for the children.

Some of the Primary 7 children will be leaving on our France Residential a week on Sunday (13th May). Please ensure that all letters are signed and returned and EHIC Health cards are returned to the school as soon as possible. If you require your child to take any medication on the trip then the appropriate form should be filled in and returned to the school before next Friday. For forms and any extra information please contact the school office as soon as possible.

The children created fantastic pieces of art work this week based on interesting skylines from around the world. They used photographs of famous skylines to help plan out their own. They then transferred their work onto black card and then painted beautiful skies with water colour paints which will frame their skyline. These are looking fantastic and will be on display until the end of term.

The children have also worked on creating informative posters for the Primary 6 children this week. Soon, the Primary 7’s will leave Carmondean Primary behind and the P6s will replace them as buddies to our new Primary 1 children in August. The children worked with a partner to create a poster that tells the Primary 6 children about their experiences of being a buddy and how to overcome any challenges. We will present these to the Primary 6 classes next week.

We are on holiday on Monday and Tuesday next week. Have a lovely long weekend and we will see the children on Wednesday.
Thank you for your support.

We hope that you all had a lovely few days off last week. The children came back with lots of stories about what they got up to and have enjoyed writing about their time in class.
We are nearing the end of our dinosaurs topic this week. We enjoyed learning all about pterodactyls yesterday and tomorrow will be finding out facts about the stegosaurus. The children have been creating super fact files all about the different dinosaurs we are learning about. Their favourite has definitely been the T-Rex!
In our Health and wellbeing lessons we have been following a programme called ‘Bounceback’. The children have been learning about how to ‘bounce back’ from mistakes and disappointments in life. On Monday we made bounce back people who remind us that we can bounce back from hard times.
In maths we are continuing our work on subtraction and telling the time. Today we learnt how to tell a half past time on analogue clocks. Thank you for your help consolidating this learning at home.
Reminders:
PE is on Thursdays. Please ensure your child comes to school with a named PE kit.
Water bottles should only contain water and should be named.
