Primary 4 6.2.20

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have had a busy but fun week! In Science we have been learning about water. Our focus this week was the oceans and plastic pollution. The children worked individually, in pairs or in groups to design their own plastic collection inventions that could be used underwater to collect plastic. We had so many amazing ideas! The children then worked together to build their inventions and make them into reality using lego. They look fantastic, well done boys and girls.

In Numeracy we have been continuing to learn about fractions. This week our focus has turned to equivalent fractions. We learned that equivalent means equal or the same and the children have been using pictures and materials to explore fractions that are written differently but are the same size. Next week we will begin to explore written ways to work out equivalent fractions.

We are continuing to enjoy NYCoS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) lessons each Monday morning. The children have been learning concepts such as rhythm, beat, pitch and even learning how to read some musical notes! Ask your child what they have been learning at home 🙂

In Health we have been learning about how to stay safe while online. We learned about the story of Chicken Clickin’ who made lots of mistakes when using the Internet. The children were confident when identifying her mistakes and making suggestions for what she could have done differently. We will continue to learn more about how to be a good digital citizen next week.

Primary 1 22.1.20

This has been another busy week in Primary 1. We have been continuing our learning about dinosaurs. Yesterday another letter arrived from Professor Rex asking us to investigate the job of a paleontologist. Lots of the children would like to be a paleontologist when they are older so it was a great opportunity to talk about the skills they need to develop in school now to help prepare. In order to practise being gentle around delicate fossils the children picked chocolate chips out of cookies. It was great fun and the children especially loved eating the cookie when they were finished! Tomorrow we will be researching the diplodocus and writing a factfile on it. If you have time at home tonight why don’t you look up the diplodocus online and see what facts you can find?

In maths we have returned to a focus on addition. We are moving away from a reliance on cubes to count amounts and are encouraging the children to add small amounts in their head. We are continuing to revise numbers to 20 at the same time and any help you can give at home is much appreciated.
In phonics we are learning y and z this week. We only have 2 more sounds (q and x) left to learn and the children are very excited to know all the letters in the alphabet. We are continuing to work on blending these sounds together to make 3 and 4 letter words. The children are making great progress in this!
Today each child will be reciting the poem ‘Roguey Poguey’ in front of the class. We will then chose 2 winners to represent the class in front of the whole school in Friday’s Burn’s Day Assembly. Good luck to all the children.
A few reminders:
PE is on a Thursday. Please send your child to school prepared for this with a named PE kit. PE is in the morning so it is helpful if your child comes to school with their PE clothes under their school uniform.
Outdoor Learning is on a Wednesday afternoon. We will try to get out every week and in all weathers so please send your child with suitable footwear and clothes.
Many of the children are asking for water throughout the day. Please send your child to school with a named water bottle each day. The children are allowed to take a drink at story time and during the day when they are not with the teacher.

Primary 6 News 10.1.20

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had a lovely break with your families and are glad to be back into a routine once more!

Our PE days are now on a Monday (indoors) and a Wednesday (outdoors). The focus indoors will be Basketball and outdoors we will be developing fitness through a series of circuits involving high intensity exercises. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothes and footwear to do this.

The children have chosen their scottish poems in preparation for our Burn’s Assembly on the 24th January. They will present these in class on Thursday 23rd January as part of a speaking and listening assessment. We will be looking for eye contact with their audience, body language and expression as well as the ability to learn their words. If there are any issues with this please get in touch. Also use Youtube to help you with pronunciation!

We have introduced our school show this week and had a listen to the songs. We will upload these soon so the children can learn them at home too. Auditions will take place in the next couple of weeks and the children will be informed about this. The show is called ‘What’s the crime, Mr Wolf?’ and we look forward to showcasing this late March/early April.

A newsletter will be handed out at the start of next week along with homework. In reading we are looking at non-fiction in class so your child will be bringing home a book to read at leisure as well as their spelling work. We have also issued children with their ‘Education City’ log in and passwords which you can access through google and we will be setting small homework activities from time to time for children to complete. Currently we have set a 6X, 7X and an 8X activitiy for children to complete but they can also access other areas too focusing on second level but use first level if your child finds some too difficult.

Primary 5

Hello and welcome back to everyone. We hope you all had a restful holiday.

The children have been busy this week taking part in a STEM challenge. They investigated what STEM stood for (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and examples of where each one is used in our wider community.

The children then investigated wearable technology that is improving and changing our lives. Each group chose examples of wearable tech and created a poster to show how it helps people in everyday life. These were then presented to the class.

Next the children got to design their own wearable tech of the future. They came up with some exciting designs which we are hoping to enter in a competition where the winners see their technology made for real.

All children have chosen their Scottish poem and we would appreciate your support in helping them learn it at home. Children can then choose to put themselves forward to represent the class at the competition on Friday 24^th January if they wish.

In Numeracy all children will be working on multiplication, division and fractions. The children must be able to recall times tables facts quickly and accurately. Please can you help your child to learn their times tables your support would be much appreciated.

Hello everyone!

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a happy new year! We can’t believe that we’re half way through the school year already!

We are looking forward to welcoming back the boys and girls tomorrow and we are sure they will have lots of news to share with us 🙂

Here is some information for the term ahead:
– PE days: Both classes have PE with Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday. P4M will have their other session of PE on a Tuesday while P4C will have their second session on a Thursday.

– Homework: This week the children will be given out a non-fiction reading book to read at home. We will also be completing work on non-fiction texts in school. Your child will have this book home for 2 weeks. A Scottish poem will also be in your child’s homework jotter. We will be working on learning and reciting Burn’s poetry in school but would also appreciate if your child could work on this at home too. They will recite their poems to others on the w/b 20th January.

– A visitor from NYCoS (The National Youth Choir of Scotland) will be working with both classes for 8 weeks beginning on Wednesday this week. The children will learn fun new songs and learn different music concepts. Starting next week sessions will take place on a Monday.

– Look out for our class newsletter in your child’s bag this week. Inside is a more detailed outline for the term ahead.

Primary 4 9.12.19

Hello everyone

It is the start of our second last week of term and we are now very busy in the run up to Christmas. Today we are going to watch the P1 nativity dress rehearsal and tomorrow we will watch the P2/3 nativity dress rehearsal. Wednesday is our Christmas party. It will take place all afternoon and children can bring party clothes to school to change into or they can go home for lunch and come back dressed for the afternoon.

In RME we have been learning about the Christmas story. The children learned about King Herod’s role in the story and the importance of this. Through drama the children were able to act as different characters in the nativity story. They could also ask the different characters questions in order to learn more about the nativity story.

In numeracy the children have worked hard to begin learning the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables and their related division facts this term. This week we will begin to work on multiplying larger numbers before revising all that we have learned next week. After the Christmas holidays we will begin to look at fractions in numeracy.

One of our PE days has changed. Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson will now be on a Wednesday. The other session of PE will continue to take place on Tuesdays. The children have also begun to have Art lessons with Ms Fox on a Wednesday.

Homework was handed out last week for the final time this term. It is due in next Monday 16th December. Starred activities must be completed and the rest are optional.

Primary 6 6.12.19

Primary 6 have had an exciting week beginning our RME topic on Advent. We went to the church where we took part in activities called Bubblegum and Fluff. We learned about the true meaning of Christmas and made lovely tiles with Christmas symbols on them. They will be coming home today.

In topic we learned about the sinking of the Titanic and took notes to create a timeline of events.

In science we have been looking at renewable energy and have started researching the different types and their benefits to the environment.

In Numeracy we have been working on multiplication. Some of us would really benefit from revising our tables to enable us to complete tricky calculations more accurately.

In Maths we have been calculating the perimeter of 2D shapes.

We have continued to work on persuasive language this week are have planned a letter to tell Santa how ‘good’ we have been.

Next week we have our Christmas party on Monday. Remember that children can bring party clothes to school to change into or go home for lunch and change there.

Outdoor PE moves back to Thursday next week.

Primary 4 29.11.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy week in Primary 4. We have been working hard on learning our Scottish song for today’s St Andrew’s Day assembly. We were working hard to learn “Bananas are the best” and the children performed very well today. Well done everyone.

Our thoughts now turn towards Christmas. Tonight is the Christmas Fair and we are looking forward to seeing many of you there. The Fair runs from 6 until 8pm and you can buy tickets at the door. In class we have been learning about the Christian story of Christmas. The children learned about the important role that King Herod played in this story and made story boards to showcase their learning.

In school next week we are very excited to watch a Panto in the big hall. We are also looking forward to our delicious Christmas lunch on Tuesday. Remember – if your child has not ordered a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school with them on Tuesday.

Homework is due in on Monday and we will hand out new reading books to some groups and new homework on Wednesday. The next set of homework will be due on Monday 16th December and this will be the last piece of homework before the Christmas holidays. Please remember that only the starred activities must be completed. Thank you.

We would also like to say thank you to all the boys and girls who have already presented their class talks. We can really tell that the children have worked so hard on preparing them. Thank you as well for all of your support in working with the children on these at home. It is very much appreciated. Anyone who has not already presented their class talk will do so next week.

*IMPORTANT*

PE days have now changed. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on a WEDNESDAY instead of a Thursday as before. The other session of PE with Miss Clark and Mrs Muir will still take place on a Tuesday.

The children will also begin to work with Ms Fox on a Wednesday in Art.

Primary 1

Primary 1 have had a busy week! We have been practising our nativity every day and it’s beginning to look great! Letters giving information about tickets went out earlier this week and the children can’t wait to show off all their hard work. Please continue to practise the songs and any lines your child might have at home. If you need to provide any clothes for costumes you will have received a letter home. Please let us know If you have any difficulty with sourcing anything.
In phonics we have been working on blending together the sounds we have learnt so far. The children are working really hard on hearing all the sounds in each word and blending these together. Thank you for all the support you have given with this at home.
In maths we are continuing our work on subtraction. The children are using their fingers, cubes and tens frames to take away from up to 10. They are beginning to recognise written sums and can write out sums in their jotters.
Tomorrow is our St Andrews Day Assembly. We have been busy learning the song ‘I sent aff for cheese’ and will sing it in front of the whole school tomorrow morning. In the evening it is the school Christmas Fair. The fair runs from 6pm until 8pm and is always a great event. If you haven’t yet got tickets, contact the office and they will be able to issue them.
Our PE times have recently changed. We are now getting PE on a Thursday morning with Mrs Fergusson our PE specialist. This will take the place of our Monday slot. Please send your child to school with a PE kit on a Thursday morning. For the next few weeks we are unlikely to be going outside for outdoor learning. We will be using this time instead for nativity rehearsals.

Primary 5

The last week in October has been a busy time in P5. Look out for the class newsletter which tells you all about the exciting activities we have planned for this term.

On Monday the children wrote persuasive pieces of writing to convince Miss Millar to display their models for our visitors. The children were able to use persuasive words and phrases to put across their reasons. We are pleased to report that all children were able to persuade Miss Millar that their models should be displayed. Look out for these around the school.

On Wednesday P5 organised Children in Need fundraising activities for the whole school to take part in. They will sell the wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. On Friday 15^th November they decided to hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. Some children ambitiously thought they could come wearing all the themes. Good Luck with that!

In science we have started our endangered animal topic. The children learned about which animals are in danger of becoming extinct. They will be choosing a Scottish endangered animal to research and create a fact file all about it. They will do some of this research at home.

In Spanish, we have learned to greet each other and have now started learning the days of the week. Sábado and Domingo are definitely the best days! Ask your child why. We also started sound editing in ICT using the Audacity sound editing programmme. This was a very popular activity and everyone was engaged throughout.

In topic we have started our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. Look out for more information about this coming home soon.

Primary 4 30.10.19

Hello everyone

We have had a fun, busy week in Primary 4. In numeracy we have been revising our knowledge of the 8 times table and we have introduced division by 8 facts. The children were able to notice the similarities between the times table facts and division facts. We will continue to consolidate this knowledge using a variety of strategies in class.

In writing, we have been continuing to write persuasive letters. This week the children wrote letters to their families at home (keep your eyes peeled for copies of these letters coming home in school bags!) The children’s job was to convince their families to allow them to watch their favourite movie at home. The children had great ideas on how to convince you!

In French Miss Carrigan and Mrs Muir have been teaching the children about weather. The children have revised different weather vocabulary. They have now begun to have a short conversation about the weather including information about the seasons. This was very tricky at first but the children worked very hard to pronounce the different vocabulary correctly. We will continue to work more on this in class.

Tomorrow we will be visiting Craigswood Sports Centre to take part in the local Cluster’s handball tournament. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit and can stay in their kit for the rest of the day. We are looking forward to watching the children further develop the skills that they have learned with Mrs Ferguson in PE lessons.

Each child should now have a reading book. Please encourage your child to bring their reading book to school each day as we use these during reading lessons. Primary 6 News

What a busy week it has been!

It was lovely to see you all over the last couple of evenings to discuss your child’s progress and how they have settled into Primary 6.

This week we had some fabulous persuasive writing pieces about why New Lanark is a good place to live. The vocabulary choices have been superb and persuaded us all to pack our bags to live there! In Maths we have developed our knowledge of the properties of shape further by identifying the size of the angle within the shape as well as look for any parallel lines. The children then went on to describe their pencil sketches of the mill buildings in New Lanark using the vocabulary associated with this. In Science, we have been looking at forces and this week’s focus was Air Resistance and the children were challenged to design a parachute that would slow the journey of a boiled egg down and allow it to land safely on the ground. Our record breaker was a total of 1.6 seconds!!

We are still on a high from the success of our Cross Country runners form last week! The results for Carmondean were fantastic and it was lovely to see so many of our boys and girls running on the day. All that Couch to 5K training must be paying off along with the terrific teachings of Mrs Ferguson of course!

A few things to remember:

PE is on a Wednesday and a Thursday for both classes, please ensure your child brings their PE Kit and the correct footwear. We will continue to run outside on a Thursday for as long as the weather will allow us so it is important the children are appropriately dressed.

Homework expectations are that children use the ‘Look, say, cover, write and check method to write out their words 3 times in their jotter and follow with a paragraph of writing that includes these words. The children can challenge their writing by including a variety of openers as well as some complex connectives, all of which we have been using in writing.

Our Inventors showcase is running on the first Thursday back after half term from 1:30 to 2:30 so if you can make it come and see some of the creations. The planning and preparation is gong well and we are very excited to see the end result!

Have a super half term whatever you are doing! Hopefully there will be some Autumn sunshine for us all!

Primary 5

P5 have been working very hard this week. The children (and staff) will be ready for their holiday!

In topic the children have each made a leaflet all about their landmark model. Everyone worked really hard to make sure that their leaflet contained interesting facts about their landmark as well as other relevant information. We also tried to make sure they were eye-catching to look at by adding lots of illustrations. You will have a chance to read these on our open morning.

We have also spent some time looking at the different traditional foods from each country in the UK. The children then recreated a dish of a meal that they might find in one of these countries. They were all so creative and some even chose to use a variety of materials such as tissue paper and string to give their meal a 3D effect. You will have a chance to taste some of these foods at our open morning on Friday 25^th October.

Mrs Gilmour’s class had great fun making figures dressed in the national costume of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The children worked very hard and the level of detail in the clothing was fantastic. Some of the figures are very life-like!

In writing the children have been creating persuasive posters to encourage everyone to keep safe and healthy. Some of the areas targeted were- washing hands, picking up litter, lining up sensibly, eating more fruit. Look out for the posters around the school when you next visit.

Well done to Mrs Gilmour’s class who have brought their PE kit every week so got to choose a treat in PE. They chose to get the big equipment out and had great fun practicing all the different skills they have learned so far. Miss Morris’ class still have a few who forget their kit, please can you try to remember so we can also get a treat!

Primary 4 4.10.19

Hello everyone

We have had another busy week in Primary 4.

In PE with Mrs Ferguson we have begun to learn the rules of handball. Please ask us about these at home if you have a chance. Letters have been sent out regarding a Handball Festival that the children will take part in on Thursday 31st October. They will play handball against other Primary 4s from other schools. Please return £2.50 and the EE2 forms as soon as possible.

Letters have also been sent home regarding the Halloween Disco which is on Thursday 24th October from 7-8:30pm. The cost is £3 per child and children may bring up to £3 with them in order to buy tuck from the tuck shop. We are looking forward to seeing your costumes!

This week in numeracy we have been revising the strategies that we can use when working out the answers to multiplication questions. We then began working on the 8 x table for the first time. The children are working very hard to learn the stations of the 8 times table. Ask your child more about what they have learned at home 🙂

Next Wednesday and Thursday parent consultations will take place. We look forward to meeting with many of you then.

Today the last homework of this term was handed in. There will be no homework next week. This will resume after the October break.

Primary 5

P5 have been working on a variety of tasks this week.

In Topic each country group has presented their display to the class. They came up with some unusual facts to share with each other. Both Miss Morris and Mrs Gilmour are very impressed with the effort all the children put into this! You will have an opportunity to read these when you visit us on Parents’ night and on our open day in October.

In writing the children have started to investigate the persuasive genre. They are writing letters to persuade people to come to our open morning using persuasive language. Look out for these letters coming home soon.

On Wednesday both classes took part in a Multi-sport Festival at DCHS. This was a great success and the children enjoyed trying out a variety of sports and meeting new friends. They were able to learn new skills in basketball, football, hockey, team games and athletics. Well done everyone!

Over the past few weeks the children have been learning about patron saints in R&ME. This Thursday Miss Morris’ class learned about Scotland’s patron saint, Saint Andrew, whilst Mrs Gilmour’s class looked at Saint David, who is the patron saint of Wales. We have all really enjoyed learning about the different traditions each country in the UK has when celebrating these religious figures.

Primary 1 25.9.19

This week Primary 1 have been thinking a lot about caring and how to look after each other, babies, animals and plants. The children have enjoyed setting up the classroom so that they can explore this more. We now have a hospital in the role play area and pet toys and resources in the home corner. We have been thinking about the people who care for us and how we can care for babies.
In maths we have been learning the numbers 7,8 and 9. The children are becoming very good at writing each number correctly and counting out amounts on fingers, cubes, rekenreks and 10s frames.
We have been learning the sound ‘n’ this week and consolidating our learning on all sounds so far (s,a,t,p,i,n). Please continue to practise each sound at home: how to say it, write it and identify which words have the sound at the start.
We gave out homework for the first time this week. Your child should have received a reading book. This should be read throughout the week and discussed with an adult. Please bring in the reading book every day so that children can also read in class. Your child will also have a yellow jotter and a sheet of paper with 6 suggested activities to try at home. Please complete the starred activities over the next 2 weeks, recording what you have done (when required) in the yellow jotter. The homework activities are to be completed by Tuesday 8th October. Your child’s teacher is happy to discuss homework with you further if you have any questions.
A reminder that PE is on a Monday. We are now changing for PE so please ensure that your child comes to school with a white T-shirt and blue/black shorts on this day.

Primary 4 22.9.19

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely weekend.

It has been another busy week in Primary 4. In RME we have been continuing to learn about Communities and Belonging. We understand that some people choose how to live their lives based on the religion that they follow. For the past 3 weeks we have been learning about how people who follow the Jewish religion only eat certain foods called “Kosher”. We have also learned that they never mix meat or milk together, they even have separate sinks, plate and cutlery for meat and milk dishes. This week the children shared their understandings by creating a meat menu and a milk menu (starter, main course and dessert) containing only Kosher foods. We will continue to explore different food laws, looking at different religions and what they believe.

Our Viking topic is well underway. The children have been comparing how a Viking’s life was different to our own lives. However we have found some similarities too. The children noted how Viking boys often led very different lives to those of Viking girls and how boys and girls now have much more similar lives. We will create our own realistic Viking characters and will write scripts telling of some of their adventures. We hope to share these with you at parents evenings in October.

We have been very impressed with the children’s developing knowledge of time in numeracy. We have now explored both analogue and digital clocks and have practised o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We have also explored the differences between am and pm times and the children learned what activities in their lives that they do in a.m. times and in p.m. times. Next week we will explore time in 5 minute intervals using the digital clock. We will also look at longer periods of time such as weeks, months and years through using calendars. Please continue to support your child with telling the time at home.

Homework share it jotters are not due in until Thursday 3rd October. All starred activities must be completed, the rest are optional.
PE days are Tuesday (Outdoor, weather permitting) and Thursday for Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson.

Primary 4 13.9.19

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have been working very hard this week. We have been exploring the use of digital clocks and looking at how o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to are written on digital clocks. Next week we will be learning more about this and exploring am and pm. Please continue to ask your child about what they are learning at home.

Thank you for all the support that you have provided the children in completing their first piece of homework in Primary 4. Homework jotters were due in yesterday and the children will be sharing their homework with their peers and their teacher today in class. New homework will be handed out next Wednesday 18th and once again the children will have 2 weeks to complete the starred activities and any of the extra activities they wish to complete.

In writing this week the children were learning about writing in paragraphs. The children were able to identify where paragraphs should start and end and what the main idea of a paragraph is in a text. Next week the children will be writing about themselves using paragraphs. We can’t wait to see how they get on 🙂

Primary 5

Hello to all,

Another busy week in P5 where the children are becoming more knowledgeable about Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The children cut up maps and made jigsaws with them. They then located major cities using clues in a treasure hunt format. On Wednesday each group chose a country to research and they are creating a display with all the key facts about that country. They will become experts on their specific country and teach the rest of the class all about it!

We are continuing to read the Spiderwick Chronicles and the children particularly enjoyed acting out various parts of the story. Please continue to encourage your child to read for enjoyment at home.

In outdoor PE the children are creating playground games. They taught another group their game and after improvement comments were given they made the necessary changes. All the children had fun learning these new games. We hope to teach these games to an infant class at a later date.

Primary 4 6.9.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy but fun filled week in Primary 4. We have been continuing to learn lots about the Vikings. This week we learned about the Viking homelands of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. We found them in an Atlas and marked them on our own maps. We then identified the Viking settlements in the UK. The boys and girls made excellent maps showing the routes across the North Sea that the Vikings may have taken to get to Scotland. We also learned about Viking long boats, what they were made of, how they were built and why they were so long and sleek. Next week we are hoping to make our own long boat models so watch this space!

In numeracy we have been continuing to learn about time. This week we focused on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analogue clock. Next week we will use digital clocks to help us to tell the time. Please continue to practise telling the time at home with your child whenever you can.

Your child still has one full week to complete their homework. We would like to see homework jotters next Thursday in class so that the children can spend some time on Friday sharing what they have done with their teacher and each other. We are looking forward to looking through their first homework task of P4 🙂

In reading, each class has begun to read and explore their new class novel. Mrs Muir’s class are reading “The Legend of Spud Murphy” while Miss Clark’s class are reading “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat”. These books will not come home with the children however we expect the children to still be reading at home even if its just a few pages each week. Please record what your child is reading each week in their homework jotter.
