We hope that you all had a lovely few days off last week. The children came back with lots of stories about what they got up to and have enjoyed writing about their time in class.
We are nearing the end of our dinosaurs topic this week. We enjoyed learning all about pterodactyls yesterday and tomorrow will be finding out facts about the stegosaurus. The children have been creating super fact files all about the different dinosaurs we are learning about. Their favourite has definitely been the T-Rex!
In our Health and wellbeing lessons we have been following a programme called ‘Bounceback’. The children have been learning about how to ‘bounce back’ from mistakes and disappointments in life. On Monday we made bounce back people who remind us that we can bounce back from hard times.
In maths we are continuing our work on subtraction and telling the time. Today we learnt how to tell a half past time on analogue clocks. Thank you for your help consolidating this learning at home.
Reminders:
PE is on Thursdays. Please ensure your child comes to school with a named PE kit.
Water bottles should only contain water and should be named.
This week your child’s homework contained a purple jotter with a sheet entitled ‘Time your climb’. The children have been shown how to complete this sheet, but please ask if you need any more explanation.
Thank you
Miss Christy, Mrs Harris and Mrs Oliver
Primary 2/3 21.2.18
Primary 2/3 had a fantastic trip to the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre. The children took part in a Roman workshop. The children looked at maps, photographs and were able to handle some Roman artefacts. The children got to dress up in Togas, touch and hold a Roman soldier’s armour and helmet. The children were also given the chance to hold some Roman weapons and a huge Roman shield. We learned lots about the Roman Bath House and Hadrians Wall. To finish our trip off, the children got to design their very own Roman shield and they took a walk up the viewing tower which allowed them to see for miles. It was rather windy up there!
Last week was also very exciting because we learned about Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Lent. We enjoyed eating our pancakes and deciding something that they thought they could possibly give up for Lent. Some of us think that this will be a huge challenge!
In maths Primary 3 are continuing to learn their times tables (2, 5 and 10) and Primary 2 are learning how to double numbers using rekenreks.
In Science we are still working our way through the Polar Explorer programme. This week we are investigation how animals stay warm in the freezing temperatures and next week we are going to “pack our bags” for a polar explorer experience. What will we need to take to keep us warm?
Next Thursday (1st March) in Health we are looking at how we grow up and bounce back. Could all children bring in a toy or comforter from when they were younger please? We are going to be using them in our discussion.
P.E is still on a Monday and Wednesday
Homework- Reading, Spelling/Time your climb, maths worksheet
Thanks, Miss Rafferty
Primary 3 News 19.2.18
This week we will be looking at the 5x table and our maths homework covers the 2s, 5s and 10s. Please encourage your child to do this on their own and use concrete materials if needed (such as lego pieces). Please also let us know if they struggle with the work.
They also have their weekly spelling words and reading too.
On Tuesday we are lucky enough to have a visit from Tesco Football who will be working with our children, developing a variety of skills. Please ensure they bring their PE kit to school.
Many thanks for the pledges you have returned regarding ‘Smoke-free Homes and Cars’. There is still time to fill this in and return to your child’s class teacher.
A confirmed date for your diary is our P3 Banquet which is taking place on Friday 16th March 11:15-12:15. You will be sent an invitation but because of the large number of children we can only accommodate one person from the family.
Also don’t forget our Knights and Castle Assembly on Tuesday 13th March. Next week we will send home any words they need to learn.
Many thanks for your continued support!
Have a good week.

P5 Friday 9th February 2018
Hi everyone!
This week we have continued with our Scottish Wars topic and we began a group challenge. Within this task we had research for information on castles and burghs. We are learning how to read for information and write up what we learn in our own words. It’s not an easy thing to do!
In Science we are learning about Solids. Liquids and Gases. There is a lot to learn as our initial “What do we know?” quiz revealed that we do not know much at this point. I am confident by the end our knowledge will have developed a good amount!
Basketball is our unit of work in P.E. We are now playing small team games and having a lot of fun doing so. It is not easy to remember all of the rules and score goals too!
Please remember that next week we are on holiday Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th. All return on Wednesday 14th February. Additionally, our BIG homework presentations are to be returned on Thursday 15th February. Presentations will take place over 2 days.
Enjoy your long weekend and we look forward to seeing you all after the small break.
Miss Farren and Mrs Jamieson
Primary Six
It is great to hear so many discussions about authors within primary six . We are building a book tower of recommendations so no one should be stuck deciding what to read next! Kensuke’s Kingdom and Run Zan Run have been producing some in-depth discussions on the texts. The Neverlanders ( Kensuke’s Kingdom ) have the question maker task to compete and The Narnians( Run Zan Run ) are reading up to chapter 5 .
Work on decimals and fractions is progressing well, please take any opportunity to point out where we use them in everyday life.
We now have a dramatic wall display depicting the Titanic disaster; our pupils are insisting that it is as factually correct as possible, quite right too!
Primary Six are continuing to work hard and have certainly earned their half term break ! Well done Primary Six. We hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday.

P2/1 Barclays Bank Visit
Today we had a visit from some people from Barclays bank which was great fun and very interesting! They talked to us about money and all the different coins and notes we have, then we did some money activities. We matched coins to dress Colin the caterpillar, played in a mini shop and went hunting for coins in dry rice. We all really enjoyed it and it reinforced our recent work on money.
Primary 1 Update 8.2.18
Hello All
We’re having another very busy week in Primary 1 this week!
In Maths we have been continuing with the concepts of Subtraction and Time and in particular telling the time using digital clocks.
In Health, the children have been discussing things that are safe/ not safe to go on their body. Next week we will be discussing things that are safe/ not safe to go in their body along with which adults they can trust.
On Thursday we were lucky to have visitors from Barclays Bank to teach us about money. We really enjoyed taking part in a treasure hunt to find and identify coins, playing a matching coins game and choosing items to buy with the coins we were given.
Also this week we have had our whole class photos taken and were delighted to see so many of you at parents night.
Please remember that next week is a short week in school as the children are on holiday on Monday (12th February) and Tuesday (13th February).
Thank you for your continuing support,
Primary 1 Teachers
P2/1 7th February 2018
Both the P1s and P2s have been working very hard with subtraction in the past few weeks. The P1s have been learning subtraction facts to 10 and the P2s have been doing missing number subtraction facts. We have been able to discuss lots of different strategies to complete these sums and have been using 10 frames and number lines to help us.
In language the P1s have been consolidating all the initial sounds and will be moving onto consonant blends-sh, th, ch etc.
The children are really enjoying their Katie Morag topic and we now have our Struay Post Office and Shop open for business!
Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 2
This Friday we’ll be having a Valentine’s Dress Down Day where children can make a donation and wear something Valentine themed. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything with hearts – pink or red will do!
PE continues to be on a Monday (outdoors) and Wednesday (indoors). Please can you make sure your child has their PE kit. It can be left in school from Monday to Wednesday if that is easier.
Don’t forget we have no school on Monday and Tuesday next week.
I’m looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday and Thursday at parents evenings.
Thanks

Primary 2/3 have been learning about Roman Mosaics. We are currently making our mosaics to decorate the classroom. The boys and girls have been taking their time to carefully place their mosaic tiles. We are also going to be learning about the clothes worn during Roman times.
We have a class trip organised for Thursday 15th February which we are very excited about! Could all children bring back their blue letter (EE2 form), lunch order and payment as soon as possible please?
I am looking forward to seeing you all at parents’ night.
Thanks, Miss Rafferty

We kicked off the week with a topic challenge of medieval weapon making! We can’t wait for you to come and see our creations during parent consultations. These take place this Wednesday and Thursday and appointments can be made on-line but if you have any problems please get in touch with our lovely school office!
Homework this week is a phonics and reading focus but don’t forget our ‘Big Homework’ which is due next week on 14th February. Children will be expected to present their models and talk through the planning and designing of it as well as each feature of the castle.
Today is Safer Internet Day so we will be learning about how to be safe on-line as well as be aware of any dangers.
After the half term break we will be planning our P3 Assembly so a date for your diary is Tuesday 13th March at 9am but we will send details of this nearer the time as well as any lines we may want your child to learn.
Looking forward to seeing you all this week and don’t forget Friday is Dress Down Day and children can wear red or pink in celebration of Valentines with a cost of 50p.

Sporting Success
Following on hotly from our P6 Handball team’s success in reaching the West Lothian League finals last week, our P7s topped the scorers at the West Lothian Sportshall Athletics on Friday. We’re definitely on a roll – keep it up sporty kids!
Gymnastics Showcase
We had an outstanding display of gymnastics prowess at our Gymnastics Showcase last Thursday, 01 February. The invited parents who attended were suitably impressed with the routines across the spectrum of abilities from gymnasts in training who go to gymnastics clubs, etc., to children demonstrating the weekly Gymnastics lessons routinely taught in PE. Special thanks to Mrs Ferguson, our PE specialist teacher, who organised the event and trained the children – it was well worth it!
Primary Six
Our week began with our Scots afternoon and Primary Six gave a cheerful performance of Wullie Stewart . Well done to all our musicians, you certainly added to song . Our focus in music continues to be the P6/7 show . Parts have now been allocated and the pupils must be complimented on their enthusiasm not only for their own roles but also those of their friends and peers. Great attitude Primary Six ! We also enjoyed a session with NYCOS and took part in a number of music challenges .
Please remember to look out for fractions, decimals and percentages in everyday life. Try to use fractions at home, for example if you are having pizza tonight we have willing pupils who will happily divide it for you!
On the whole we have noticed an improvement in the effort towards literacy circle homework. Please make sure the agreed pages have been read so that all pupils can fully contribute during our literacy circles sessions in class. Our new class library is almost completed and we can’t wait to use it.

Primary 5 2nd February 2018
What a busy week we have had in Primary 5. In reading we continue learning about the Scottish Wars of Independence and what life was life for people 700 years ago. We are concentrating on extending our answers to include relevant details.
On Monday we celebrated Burns with an afternoon of poetry and singing. Our stage winners, Ryan McKie and Caitlin O’Hara performed their poems to an appreciative audience. We were very proud of all our stars!
On Tuesday NYCOS worked with both classes and we sang songs and played coordination games. This was challenging for some- even the teachers!
Our topic work has involved lots of art this week. We have been learning about and creating our own Coat of Arms, we had to carefully select animals, symbols and colours that were personal to us. These will be on display at Parent’s Evenings. Feel free to ask us all about them.
Thursday we enjoyed P.E with Mrs Ferguson and students from Edinburgh University. Some pupils participated in a gymnastics show and have worked very hard preparing for today. Well done to them all.
Please book appointments for parents nights next week and we look forward to catching up with you all.
P5F have Miss Hutchison from Edinburgh University working with us for 5 weeks and we look forward to working with her.
Thank you

Hello,
This week we have been working very hard creating our own dance routines in PE. We have all chosen a group and a song to dance to. We will continue to practise for the next few weeks and then we will be performing our dances to an audience of our choice – we can’t wait!
For topic we have been learning about WWII. We have been given a challenge to create an informative booklet about a WWII subject of our choice. We have to research information and write it in our own words. We will be presenting our booklets to the class when they are complete.
Last week a few people went to Morrisons to ask the public about how alcohol affects their community. Today in maths we really enjoyed collating the results from the survey. We created tables, bar charts, pie charts and worked out fractions and percentages. Everyone worked extremely hard!
Before Christmas we were given the task to plan a new reading area for the P7 classroom. We had to stick to a strict budget. We also got to choose our own book to put in the library which we are enjoying reading. Inside these books we put a special label to say who chose it and why someone should read it so that other people can enjoy the books too! This week our furniture arrived and we have been busy organising it. We have included some photos below to show how much we are enjoying this.
Congratulations to everyone who auditioned for a part in our P6/7 show – everyone has been allocated a part. In music we have been working very hard to learn our song words. They are sounding fabulous! We will be practising the show and learning scrips/song words for the next few weeks!
On Monday the senior challenge group held the Scots afternoon – it was a great success! All classes sang to the visitors and read Scottish poems. The drummers also performed spectacularly!
Thank you,
Kaii, Declan, Sarah, Sam & Faith
