Primary 5

Hello to all,

Another busy week in P5 where the children are becoming more knowledgeable about Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The children cut up maps and made jigsaws with them. They then located major cities using clues in a treasure hunt format. On Wednesday each group chose a country to research and they are creating a display with all the key facts about that country. They will become experts on their specific country and teach the rest of the class all about it!

We are continuing to read the Spiderwick Chronicles and the children particularly enjoyed acting out various parts of the story. Please continue to encourage your child to read for enjoyment at home.

In outdoor PE the children are creating playground games. They taught another group their game and after improvement comments were given they made the necessary changes. All the children had fun learning these new games. We hope to teach these games to an infant class at a later date.

Reminders

PE weekly update

PE Kit

It’s been a fantastic week in PE with  P7A  winning the first Most Prepared for PE Certificate of the year when all of the class brought PE kit for their basketball lesson. Please help your child to remember their PE kit on PE days as it is much easier, more comfortable and usually safer to take part in PE with shorts/leggings, t-shirt and gym shoes than while wearing school uniform.  They are all desperate to get a certificate 3 weeks in a row because that wins their class a choice of activity for PE.

Class activities

At the moment the classes that come to me are learning/developing the following activities:

P7  Basketball

P6 Cross Country

P5 Gymnmastics- Partnerwork

P4 Gymnastics- Rolling

P3A  Benchball

P3B  Gymnastics- shape

How can you help

Please ask them what they have been doing and ( if safe to do so) show you what they have been learning.

See how active you can be over the holiday weekend.  The sun is to shine so can you get out on your bike, go for a walk/run, take a ball to the park to play football/rugby/netball.

Mrs Ferguson

Primary 2 – 9/9/19

Hello Everyone

Last week was a very busy week in Primary 2 as our topic got off to an exciting start when the classrooms were changed to reflect Life in the Past! The children were shocked to learn about the belt and how differently they were expected to learn – we are sure you have heard all about it!! There were a lot of relieved faces when it was all back to ‘normal’ on Wednesday morning!! This week we continue to learn about Life in the Past with a focus on houses and household appliances.

In Writing, we will be preparing letters to send to residents at Pentland View, a local retirement housing development, to ask questions about their experience of life in the past and their memories.

In Maths and Numeracy this week we will be continuing our focus on 3D objects including pentagons, hexagons and octagons along with work on numbers to 100.

A few reminders:

-please could all personal items be labelled – we have already had some lost property items.

-please could children bring named water bottles

-indoor gym – Tuesday, outdoor gym – Thursday

-homework – issued Tuesday to be returned Monday (issued every 2 weeks) – please ensure book bags are brought every day as children need these to complete in-class activities.

We would also like to remind everyone that the children have a holiday next Monday and Tuesday (16th and 17th September) and we look forward to seeing them when they return on Wednesday 18th September.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Mrs Oliver, Miss Pringle, Miss Rafferty.

Primary 7 – 06.09.19

Bonjour!

We have had a very busy week in Primary 7 this week. We began our first topic of Primary 7 – Japan. We learned about where Japan is in relation to Scotland, looked at the Japanese flag and discussed what we know about the landscape, culture and much more. We are looking forward to finding out more next week!

In RME we learned about special journeys called Pilgrimages. We researched and discussed some pilgrimages that some Christians go on. Each week we will be focusing on different pilgrimages from a different World religion.

In maths we have been working on symmetrical patterns and completing the other half of a given pattern with a range of vertical, horizontal and diagonal mirror lines. We have also been looking at the properties of 2D shapes with a focus this week on quadrilaterals. In numeracy we have been busy practicing our mental recall skills and learning about place value of 6 digit numbers and beyond.

Chris and Derek came to our classes on Wednesday to deliver a workshop about racism. We learned that we should not judge people on how they look and get to know the person. We talked about the effect racism has on people and took part in a range of activities.

Caitlin, Michael and Isla helped with our blog today .

Reminders:

Spelling homework – Due on Friday

Numeracy homework – play numeracy games (see previous blog for ideas)

Monday and Wednesday – PE kits

Primary 4 6.9.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy but fun filled week in Primary 4. We have been continuing to learn lots about the Vikings. This week we learned about the Viking homelands of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. We found them in an Atlas and marked them on our own maps. We then identified the Viking settlements in the UK. The boys and girls made excellent maps showing the routes across the North Sea that the Vikings may have taken to get to Scotland. We also learned about Viking long boats, what they were made of, how they were built and why they were so long and sleek. Next week we are hoping to make our own long boat models so watch this space!

In numeracy we have been continuing to learn about time. This week we focused on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analogue clock. Next week we will use digital clocks to help us to tell the time. Please continue to practise telling the time at home with your child whenever you can.

Your child still has one full week to complete their homework. We would like to see homework jotters next Thursday in class so that the children can spend some time on Friday sharing what they have done with their teacher and each other. We are looking forward to looking through their first homework task of P4 🙂

In reading, each class has begun to read and explore their new class novel. Mrs Muir’s class are reading “The Legend of Spud Murphy” while Miss Clark’s class are reading “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat”. These books will not come home with the children however we expect the children to still be reading at home even if its just a few pages each week. Please record what your child is reading each week in their homework jotter.

Reminders –
PE days – Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor)
Homework due – Thursday 12th Sept (spelling, reading and maths activities should be completed. Other tasks are optional).

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Clark & Mrs Muir.

Primary 5

Hello to all,

The children have been working hard on a variety of activities this week.

All children were given their BIG Homework task on Wednesday which is to be completed by Friday 27th September. The children can choose any landmark they wish and use a variety of materials to build their model. If you encounter any difficulties with this task please contact us at school. Good Luck and have fun building!

We have been using our imagination when writing. Our story is set in the woods and the children have been working hard on thinking of imaginative words to describe the setting. Some of these were our Word Boost words as well.

Another key focus this week has been internet safety. We have been looking at how to stay safe online when on different websites and games. We would appreciate it if you could also discuss this with your child.

A gentle reminder about PE kit. It is important that the children have a PE kit they can change in to for indoor and outdoor PE. Unfortunately quite a few children are coming to school with no kit. Please can you ensure that your child has outdoor kit on a Monday and indoor kit on a Thursday. Thank you for your help and support with this.

In maths we are investigating symmetry. We have been discussing what makes a shape symmetrical and drawing symmetrical patterns. As homework please could you support your child to  look for real life examples of symmetry at home and in the community. Thank you.

Reminders

PE- Outdoor on a Monday. Indoor on a Thursday

Homework

Spelling given out on a Monday due in on a Friday. The children have to do Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check and a sentence for each word.

Maths – Time homework given out on Tuesday 3rd due in Tuesday 10th.

Primary 1 w.b. 2.9.19

Primary 1 have had another busy week! This week we have begun our formal number and phonics learning. In phonics, the children have learnt the sounds ‘a’ and ‘t’. The children were learning to write the letters correctly and to think of words with each sound at the beginning. Please continue to practise these things at home to support your child’s learning.
In maths, we have been learning the numbers 0,1,2 and 3. Our focus has been on correct number formation, but we have also worked on counting out amounts and ordering numbers to 10.
During our story time we have introduced the children to the key characters in our reading scheme. This week we met Kipper, Floppy, Biff, Chip, Mum and Dad. We will work more on these characters as we begin home reading books in a few weeks time.
This week the children decided to take forward a play focus on ‘our school’. The children chose what they would like in each play area in our classroom and are enjoying ‘being teachers’, building their dream school and designing new uniforms.

As always, we value home-school links and are happy to discuss anything after school.
Primary 1 teachers.

We have also been doing a lot of work on our achievements and celebrating our achievements which will go towards creating our frieze for the small hall, we have a talented bunch! We have had Meet the Teacher and it was lovely to see so many people there. Thank you for handing back our achievements sheets and class charter forms so quickly, can those who are still to hand theirs back please hand them in at your earliest convenience?

Primary 6 30.8.19

Hi all,

A full week completed!

We have had a busy week completing some number assessments in Numeracy and brushing up on our angle knowledge in Maths. Today we did some problem solving and it was interesting watching all the different strategic approaches used! In Literacy we have been revising the use of apostrophes and next week we will be creating our very own character from the Industrial Revolution and describing them using a wide range of descriptive phrases.

Next week we will be sending homework home so please encourage your child to complete the activities in their jotter. Also could you remind your child to bring their reading book to school daily.

PE takes place on a Wednesday and a Thursday, both sessions are taking place outdoors so please ensure your child has the appropriate kit and footwear.

It was lovely to meet some of you at the Meet the Teacher session, if you were unable to attend you should have received an information booklet sent home with your child. If not, dig deep in their school bags!

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Smith, Mrs Jamieson & Ms Matheson

Primary 7

It was lovely to see so many of you at our meet the teacher session on Wednesday, thanks to those who came along. Our first term newsletter has now been distributed and it provides a brief overview of what we will be working on. We continue to be very impressed with the attitude all the primary sevens are demonstrating with regards to their buddies, well done!
“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind”
We are currently reading Wonder by R.J.Palacio. We will be continuing with the novel over the next few weeks and discussing the themes of kindness, inclusion and friendship which are explored throughout the story.
We have reiterated the importance of times tables and will continue to do so throughout primary 7. The pupils have been shown a number of games and activities to help their recall.

( Two Player activities )
1 . Rock Paper Scissors

Each player writes down the same word on paper. They face each other and with their fists closed they make the action used at the beginning of the game Rock, Paper, Scissors. After counting to three they each hold up a number of fingers eg. Player one may hold up 6 fingers and player 2 chooses to hold up 8. The first person to shout out the answer to 6 x 8 crosses off the first letter of the word. The winner is the person who manages to cross off all the letters of the word first.
This game can be made more difficult by making the value fingers greater of smaller. For example each finger is worth 10 or 0.1 .

2. Multiplication Snap

A pack of playing cards are dealt between two players . Player one placed a card face up on the table. Player 2 places a card face up on top . The players multiply the cards together; the player who calls out the answer first wins the cards.
To make the games more difficult the value of the cards can be changed , for example a 3 could become 30 or 0.3 .
Please ask your child to explain the I Say , You Say game . ( Number Bonds to 10 , 20 , 50 , 100)
We have explained that we may not send home a physical maths sheet every week , however we do expect the pupils to practise their mental maths every week .

Next week we will be beginning our topic on Japan.

REMINDERS –
PE – Outdoor Kit Mondays
Indoor Kit Wednesdays
Homework –spelling words will be given on Mondays; we will have a spelling test in class on Fridays.
Numeracy Homework – Due Friday 6th September

Thank for your continued support.

Welcome Primary 1

Welcome to all of the children in Primary 1 beginning their new adventure at our school. They have all settled in well and are enjoying learning new exciting things across the curriculum.  We would like to say a huge thank you to all of the wonderful Primary 7 buddies who have helped the children adapt to their new school routines. The children have loved having the opportunity to play and read with their buddies. The children will continue to read with their buddies on Friday mornings in the classroom.

This week the Primary 1 children have been learning about the Rainbow Fish and the underwater world through play and group activities across all three classrooms. They have created fish, scales, starfish and jellyfish using a range of materials and have discussed the key themes within the book.

In maths the children have been exploring number through counting games and songs. They have been using resources to describe quantities and order.

Primary 1 have also been exploring Unicef’s Rights of the Child and have discussed their rights and responsibilities as members of the school. The children have had the opportunity to use mixed media to create portraits for the class charter and have been working closely on pencil control and creating shapes. They have also created drawings of their personal achievements for a new display in our gym hall.

We would like to say thank you to all of the parents and carers who were able to make it along to our Meet the Teacher event. It was a pleasure to see you all and share how well the children have settled into Primary 1.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Miss Daun, Miss Christy and Mrs Steel.

Reminder

A friendly reminder that the children have P.E. on a Monday and should remember to bring their labelled gym kit along with them.

Hello Everyone,

We have had a busy week in P5. It was lovely to meet lots of you at Meet the Teacher on Wednesday. Hopefully you were able to see some of the work the children have completed so far.

We have been working on our display for the small hall all about achievement. The children were able to identify some of their personal achievements which they wrote about and drew a picture of. They also drew round their hands and used a variety of patterns to decorate them.

We started our Great Britain topic by looking at maps and labeling the different countries. Look out for exciting homework about landmarks coming home next week.

The children have started French (bonjour) and Spanish (hola) lessons this week. If anyone has any expertise in these areas and would like to come in and share their knowledge with the children please contact at school.

We have started reading our class novel, ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’. We are aware that the movie is being shown on the television at the moment so we would appreciate it if the children do not watch it as we are hoping to watch it altogether at the end of term.

Primary 2 – Week Beginning 26.8.19

We have had a very busy week in Primary 2. We have been working hard to introduce play into Primary 2 and now have the classrooms set up as 3 stations – teach, practise and play. The children have been working in rotations around the stations and have done really well.

Thank you to all who came along to Meet the Teacher. It was lovely to see so many faces. We issued newsletters which informed you about our planned learning this term and our gym days. Your newsletter will be in your child’s bag if you were unable to attend.

We have been revising some of our phonemes this week and children should have brought home their reading book. We will hear reading regularly but encourage you to practise at home as much as you can.

We have also begun to explore life in the past as our topic. The children were shocked to hear that pupils used to get hit by the belt in school and are keen to find out more. We will be setting our classroom up as an olden day school for an afternoon next week!

Look out for our first homework of p2 which will be issued on Tuesday.

Have a lovely weekend!

Primary 4 Update

Welcome to a new year in primary 4! Both classes have settled in really well and we’ve been very busy agreeing our class charter, our learning targets for the term and getting to know each other and the classrooms.

We have started our Vikings topic already and have been looking at the similarities and differences between our lives and the lives of Vikings.  We were all quite shocked that the Vikings sometimes took their farm animals to live with them in their houses!  We will be investigating lots more about the Vikings and incorporating other curricular areas including drama and art to help us with our learning.

In numeracy we will be consolidating the times tables we have already learned and starting to learn the 6,7,8 and 9 times tables. We will also be practising telling the time.  We will revise telling the time to quarter past and quarter to the hour and then focus on telling the time to minutes past and to the hour.  It would be great if you could practise telling the time with your child at home too.

Homework:

Homework will be issued every two weeks starting next week.  There will be a variety of activities, some will be starred which means these should definitely be completed.  There will also be other activities which are optional.  House points will be given for any optional activities completed.  We’ll share our homework in class every two weeks on a Friday.

For the first term we will not issue a reading book as we will be working on a class novel and doing lots of reading in class. However we encourage all the children to read books at home.  If you would like to borrow a book from school for your child to read, please let us know.

PE:

Indoor PE with the PE specialist Mrs Ferguson is on a Thursday and outdoor PE is on a Tuesday. Please could you make sure your child has a PE kit. If it’s easier the PE kit can be taken in at the beginning of the week and left in class until the Friday. Mrs Muir’s class have PE first thing on Thursdays so please could your child come in wearing PE kit and with their school uniform in their bag to change into after PE.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask us.

Thanks for all your support,

Miss Clark and Mrs Muir.

Primary 5

Hello and welcome to a new year in Primary 5. The children have settled in well and are beginning to become familiar with their new rules and routines.

We have had a busy start to the new term and the children have been working hard. We have created our class charter and discussed how we can be respectful of others and how others can respect us. We have written about what we did in the summer holidays and how excited we are to be back at school! The children are working on creating silhouettes to show a variety of information about themselves. See if you can guess who each silhouette is of.

Hopefully you will see the results of their hard work when you come to Meet the Teacher on Wednesday 28th August. We are looking forward to meeting you then.

Primary 6 News 22.08.19

Welcome back to all of our Primary 6 pupils! Hope you have all had a restful holiday and are ready to start the new academic year!

This week we have all been settling into the new routines of P6. Lots of discussions have been had around our class charter, recognising our rights and responsibilities. We have also revised the Shanarri indicators and looked at how these can be achieved in the home, school and the local community. We have identified a goal to promote personal achievement and started our couch to 5km training!

Here are a few reminders:

  1. Our PE sessions are on a Wednesday and a Thursday. Please ensure children have kit for both in and out door as our focus is on cross country running so, weather permitting, this will be predominately taken outside even if there is a little rain. So trainers are a must for foot support. On a Wednesday can children come to school in their PE kit with their uniform packed in their bags so that we are ready for our lessons first thing.
  2. Homework will be issued on a fortnightly rotation. This will cover spelling, writing, numeracy and other curricular areas that are relevant at that time. Can this be handed in on the final Friday of each fortnight please.
  3. Your child should have delivered a ‘Meet the Teacher’ letter today. This will be taking place next Wednesday at 4:30pm. We are all looking forward to seeing your faces again as well as meeting some of our newer children’s parents.
  4. Can you make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes also for the classroom.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Smith, Ms Matheson & Mrs Jamieson
