Primary 4 11.10.18

Hello everyone

It was lovely to meet so many parents and carers last night at our first Parents evening. We look forward to welcoming many others this evening.

This week we have been completing work on our whole class novel studies “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” (P4C) and “The Legend of Spud Murphy” (P4D). After the October holidays your child will receive a book home with them and will be given pages to read each week. They will also complete written work in class related to what they have read.

On Monday we learned about Viking homes. The children explored what their homes would have looked like and the similarities and differences between Viking longhouses and our own homes. Some of the children weren’t sure if they would like to share their house with the farm animals! The children then began to create their own Viking homes from a “birds eye view”.

In ICT this week the children were using the programme “Textease” to create their own Viking posters. They learned how to change the size, look and colour of our text and the children enjoyed that they could place their text anywhere that they wanted on the page. We’re looking forward to completing the posters after the holidays.

Tomorrow is the last day of term before the October holidays. We look forward to seeing the children back at school on Tuesday 23rd October.

Have a lovely October break.

Primary 4 5.10.18

Hello everyone
We have had a very busy week in Primary 4! We just performed our Harvest Assembly to Primaries 5, 6 and 7. The children sang beautifully and performed spectacularly! We were very proud teachers 🙂 Well done everyone!

Parents’ nights are next Wednesday from 5-7:30pm and Thursday from 4-6:30pm. We are looking forward to meeting with you then. If you haven’t booked an appointment yet please contact the school office.

In PE the children have been developing their skills in Handball. They have been working very well as part of small teams. On Wednesday 31st October we will all be attending a Handball Festival and playing games against other schools. Keep practising P4! 🙂

This week we have been learning about the science of floating and sinking. We discussed what items we thought might float or sink and there were a few surprises! We learned that the weight of the objects wasn’t always important but that the materials the objects were made out of and their DENSITY were very important. Today we are using Plasticine to make Viking long boats. We will then test them to see if they float!

Next week there will be no spelling homework. This will resume again after the October Holidays. Maths homework will be a task on the website “Studyladder”. Children have their username and password in their homework diaries.

Reminders:

Outdoor PE – Tuesday
Indoor PE – Thursday
Parents’ evenings – Wednesday and Thursday evening
No spelling homework next week.
Maths due Friday (StudyLadder)
Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 4 27.9.18

Hello everyone

Our Harvest assembly rehearsals are now in full swing! If your child has a speaking part in our assembly then their lines are in homework diaries for them to practise. Please encourage your child to learn their words at home. Our assembly will be performed in front of the school only. However we will have an assembly later in the year that parents can attend.

We started to look at play scripts this week in class. The children explored the features of play scripts and how they differ from story books or non-fiction texts. They then worked in a group to read the part of a character in a play. We will be exploring different kinds of play scripts in class further and will soon be performing in front of the class!

In French we have been revising various greetings and also learning some new ways to say hello and goodbye to others including “See you tomorrow” and “see you soon”. Please ask us about these at home 🙂 We have made our own puppets in class using lolly pop sticks and we will use these to help us to greet others.

Reminders –
Spelling (common words) and maths homework – Due Friday
Reading (10 pages in book of your choice)
Learn Assembly words

PE days
Outdoor – Tuesday
Indoor – Thursday

Thank you for your support.

Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 4 20.9.18

Hello everyone

We have had a short but busy week so far in Primary 4! Yesterday we continued learning about Vikings. We learned about how long ships were constructed and the materials that Vikings used to make them. We also learned why it was important that they were so long and narrow. Ask your child if they can tell you why! 🙂 We then continued working on our Viking display by painting a long ship which the Vikings we painted will fit inside. We can’t wait to see this display come together 🙂

We have been revising the importance of using capital letters and full stops correctly. The children identified special words that we know that require a capital letter (proper nouns). Ask your child if they can tell you about any of these special words 🙂

We are beginning to learn about the festival of Harvest. We will be exploring how different countries celebrate Harvest and we will show our learning through creating and performing a Harvest Assembly on Friday 5th October. Please look out for any lines/song words in your child’s homework diary that they may need to learn for the assembly. Please note that this assembly is a school only assembly. There will be another opportunity later on in the year for you to attend your child’s assembly.

Last week we began working with NYCOS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) on music and singing. The children will have a 45 minute session each week until Christmas. This is a great opportunity for the children to learn more about tone, pitch, rhythm and much more!

Reminders:
Homework will resume again as normal next week.
Spelling & maths homework due for Friday.
Reading homework – 10 pages to be read each week and to be recorded on spelling sheet.
PE days – Outdoor PE: Tuesday
Indoor PE: Thursday

Thank you for your support.
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Primary 4 13.9.18

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely week. We’ve had a busy week in Primary 4.

This week the children created their own Viking character. The children drew their Viking and used descriptive language to describe his/her physical appearance and personality. We then wrote about an adventure that our Viking went on focusing on a problem our Viking encounters and resolving the problem at the end of our story. Soon we will do some drama work related to our Viking characters, acting as if we actually are our character!

In Health we have been learning about the value of honesty. The children discussed why it is important to be honest and how not telling the truth can sometimes cause a lot more trouble. The children then displayed their knowledge which will now form part of a classroom display.

In maths the children have been learning about 2D shapes and patterns. The children are able to identify different 2D shapes and discuss their properties confidently. They will now use their knowledge of pattern and shape to create symmetrical Viking shields. We’re sure they will look fantastic!

There will be no homework next week due to the long September weekend. Spelling/maths homework will resume as normal on Monday 24th September.

Reminders:
PE days are Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor). Please ensure that your child has appropriate kit on these days.
Badgers spelling sound: -ture
Foxes spelling sound: -mb

We hope you have a lovely long weekend. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school next Wednesday 🙂

In numeracy the children have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10. We began by rounding tens and units and we are now beginning to round hundreds numbers to the nearest 10 too! Please ask your child about what they have been learning.

Our Viking Topic is now in full swing! The children have learned about the countries that Vikings came from (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) and found them in an Atlas. They have also drawn their own Vikings and painted them as part of a display for our wall. Primary 4 30.8.18

Hello everyone

It was lovely to meet so many of you last night at our Meet the Teacher event. Thank you for coming 🙂

Your child should now have been given a newsletter which contains all of the important dates and information for this term. Our PE days will be Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor with Mrs Ferguson). Please ensure your child is prepared appropriately for PE on both these days especially Tuesday when we will be outside as the weather begins to get colder.

Your child will shortly come home with a letter in their bags containing their class charter. The children have agreed that they will respect their rights and the rights of others this year and we would appreciate if you could read this over with your child, sign the tear off slip and return to the school. Thank you for your support with this.

This week we have started looking at our new reading books “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat” (P4C) and “The Legend of Spud Murphy” (P4D). These books will not come home and instead the children will read them as a class and complete activities on their book in school. Please continue to encourage your child to read for enjoyment at home. Anytime they finish reading a book please let us know by writing in their homework diary. This book will then be added to our class reading tree. More information about this can be found in the P4 newsletter.

Next week we will hand out spelling and maths homework on Monday. Both pieces of homework will be due in on Friday. Please do not hesitate to speak to us if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend.

Primary 4 24.8.18

Hello everyone

Welcome to the P4 blog. We hope you had a lovely summer. We have really enjoyed meeting the children and beginning to get to know them over the past few days.

We have had a busy first week hearing all about everyone’s summer holidays. The children wrote about 3 things that they enjoyed the most about their holidays. They also worked on creating our classroom charters which tell the children about their rights and about how to respect the rights of others. We are creating classroom displays based on our charters.

We have also been learning about the importance of positive, happy thoughts even when things are difficult or tricky. The children were able to identify their strengths and we have started making a display for the hall about concentrating on the positives instead of the negatives. We are sure this will look fantastic!

Our annual Meet the Teacher event takes place next Wednesday (29th August) from 4:30-5:30. This is a drop in event where you can meet your child’s new teacher, look around the classroom, see work your child has completed in the first 2 weeks and explore resources that they may be using in Primary 4. Miss Donaldson & I are looking forward to meeting many of you then.

Next week we will send out a newsletter containing all of the important information needed for this term including what the children will be learning in each subject area and important dates (including PE days). Please look out for this in your child’s school bag.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

P4 Auchengillan day 2!

Good morning,

Last night we went to an inflatable games barn. We did sumo wrestling, tug of war and The battle zone (see pictures below)

We also went to the tuck shop and bought (annoying) toys that make lots of sound. We then had supper and went to bed.

This morning we have woken up to sunshine. We had coco pops and hot filled rolls. Then we packed our bags and stripped our beds.

We are about to go off and do laser tag, archery and crate climbing. We are excited about the amazing activities today!

From the Primary 4s

Auchengillan p4 day 1

We have had a fantastic start to our day. We have been grass sledging, water walking, team building and go karting. It has been breezy and is now sunny.

The dorms are huge and amazing. We are all happy with the rooms.

Dinner was amazing. Everyone is speechless because the dinner was so good. The best bit was the chocolate cake and cream.

We are now on the grass playing games before we do our night activities. This is the view

We will let you know more details tomorrow!

Thanks for reading,

Primary 4 Snow Day

Good morning primary 4. I hope you are all keeping warm and safe.

I hope you tried some of the activities I posted yesterday. I can’t wait to see what you have done when we are back at school. Here a few more things you might like to try.

1. Go on a winter walk  looking for animal or bird tracks. When you get home try to find what they were made by.

2. Use books or the computer to find out about countries where it is snowy like this for most of the year. Make a poster with 6 or more interesting facts about this country.

3. Use a ruler or tape measure to measure the depth of snow in different parts of your garden.

4. Make up a 6 or 8 times table quiz for someone else to complete. Mark their answers once they have completed it.

5. Today is World Book Day. You might like to read on of your favourite books and design a new book cover for it. Perhaps you could write a different ending for your favourite book. Alternatively you could turn part of your book into a cartoon strip with speech bubbles. Finally you could even make a snowman like one of the characters.

6. Yesterday I suggested you might like to make up a song with the answers to the 6 or 8 times table in it. You might like to try making up a song to help learn another one.

I hope you are all having fun. Remember we would all like to see what you have done once school is reopened.

P4D snow update

Good morning everyone!
We hope you have had enjoyed the snow and staying safe in this weather. Happy world book day!!

We put up quite a few activities yesterday to be completed but if you are looking for more or for something different here are some more ideas:

1) As it is world book day can you use what you have in the house to create a costume from one of your favourite books? Please post any pictures in the comments. If you have access to the internet here is the link to website for some more ideas:

World book day homepage

2) Practice your 6 and 8 times table using the links from yesterday and studyladder. You can also use the song for counting in 8s.

counting in 8s

3) Practice your spelling words in the snow.

4) In maths we have been learning about Venn diagrams. Can you create your own Venn diagram using your own criteria and information to display in the diagram. You could draw your diagram in the snow.

5) In our topic we have been learning about Dundee and Glasgow. Can you find out about another major city in Scotland such as Stirling, Edinburgh, Aberdeen or Perth? You can research these cities and display what you have found on a poster, leaflet or Powerpoint. Remember you can access to Microsoft Powerpoint through your glow page.

6) Complete your Morag and the Water Horse pictures for our Sway project.

I hope you have a super day. Remember to stay safe and keep warm. Please feel free to ask any questions if you need help or post pictures of what you have been doing while you have been off.
Enjoy your day in the snow!

PE snow day ideas

I wonder if any of you fancy being the next Lizzie Yarnold?  Have a look at the video clip of Lizzie winning her second gold medal at the recent Winter Olympics and then get out sledging today! Remember to be safe though!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We4rtSaRgSs

If you don’t have a sledge you can just get out in the snow and try all different activities in it.  I think you’ll find it’s much harder walking, running and jumping in the snow.  How many different activities can you do in the snow and  how does your body feel when you try them?

And if you cant get outside here are some indoor activities you can try.

Primary 4M Snow Day

Good morning everyone. I hope you are having fun in the snow. Here are a few things you might like to do today.

  1. Watch the weather forecast and find out what the weather is like in the cities we have looked at so far – Glasgow, Inverness and Dundee. How cold is it? Which place is the snowiest? Maybe you could draw a map of Scotland and draw symbols for the weather there today.
  2. Write a story about the fun things you have done in the snow today. Did you make a snowman or an igloo? Perhaps you could take some photos and show them to us when we are back at school.
  3. You could write the 6 or 8 times table in the snow- a stick is your pen and the snow is your paper!
  4. Listen to the 6 or 8 times table songs on your computer or tablet. Maybe you can make up your own song to help learn these times tables. We will hear any new songs when we are back at school.
  5. Complete your reading and spelling homework.
  6. Draw or paint a picture of your house and garden in the snow.
  7. Mr Shanks has a list of some other things you might like to do as well.

Keep safe and have fun.

Ms Matheson

Primary 4D Snow day!!

Good morning Primary 4!
We hope you have a lovely day in the snow and are remembering to stay safe.
Here are some activities that you can do today:

1.In maths we have been learning our times tables so you could make arrays for the 6 and 8 times tables using snowballs and take pictures of them to show us in class.
2.In spelling you have been learning strategies for spelling tricky words, see if you can make up some winter themed mnemonics for your homework words.
3.In our topic we have been learning all about Dundee. You could make a poster displaying all the information you have learned about Dundee. See if you can find any new facts that we have not discussed yet.
4.Since we have been learning about Dundee and D.C Thomson can you create your own comic book story about your day in the snow? Remember to draw out the comic strip boxes and include pictures and captions. We can display these in the classroom.
5.Choose your favourite book at home to read and make a poster or a book review to share with the class for World book day.
6.If you have access to the internet remember that you can logon to studdyladder and complete some of the times tables activities set for you. You can also go onto topmarks and play hit the button or coconut multiples.

coconut multiples

Remember that you do not need to complete all these activities today, these are just some ideas for what you could be doing. Mr Shanks has also posted work books on the blog with more ideas that are suited for each stage. If you have any questions or you want to share what you are doing today please feel free to leave a comment.
Have a super day in snow! We can’t wait to hear all about it when we are back and remember to stay safe in the snow. Wrap up warm and enjoy!!!
