Update Primary 3

Primary 3 have had a busy week. We have been continuing to learn about life in medieval times and what it would be like to live in a castle. A ‘Big Homework’ task has been issued. The children are to make a poster or a model of a castle which includes the main features of a castle. Any material can be used (paper, cardboard. clay or plasticine, for example.) Once the models or posters have been brought into school, the children will tell the rest of the class all about their model.

On Thursday there will be a Valentine’s Dress Down Day. If the children would like to take part in this a donation of 50p is asked for.

As I am sure you know Parent’s Evening is on Wednesday and Thursday this week. The bookings can be made on-line or alternatively appointments can be made by contacting the school office.

The first Primary 3 ‘Shared Finish’ will be on Wednesday 20 February at 2.50pm. It will be a time for you to see how we are teaching mental calculatons at this stage. We look forward to seeing you then.

Primary 1 Update 6.2.19

Hello All,

This week in Primary 1 we have been continuing our learning about Dinosaurs and this weeks focus has been on volcanoes and the Diplodocus. All the classes were very excited to make their own volcano erupt!

Tuesday (5th) was Safer Internet Day and the children discussed what this might mean in basic terms and watched a short video. Also in ICT this week children will be developing their skills in typing with the help of some their P7 buddies.

In Phonics, children are continuing to develop their skills in blending short words and we have also begun to introduce consonant digraphs – this week’s is ‘sh’.

In Health this week the children have been discussing things that are safe to go on their body and as part of this we also discussed trusted adults. We will continue this in future weeks with things that are safe to go in our body.

The focus in Maths this week has been on a variety of types of measurement including length, weight and capacity. The children have enjoyed using non-standard units to measure everyday classroom items as well as dinosaurs!

Primary One Volcano!

Today we have been learning about volcanoes as part of our dinosaur topic.  Mrs Steel prepared a special experiment for us and we made our very own erupting volcano! We added washing up liquid, red food colouring and bicarbonate of soda together in a bottle that Mrs Steel had made to look like a volcano.  Then we added in vinegar and stood right back.  All of a sudden the volcano erupted and there was red lava everywhere! We had great fun with this and could maybe even try it again at home!

Primary 4 6.2.19

Hello everyone

It has been another busy week in Primary 4 this week.

In reading each group has been working on a variety of activities related to their short class novels. Well done to everyone for reading their larger novel at home. Some children are even finished reading these already! 🙂 If your child finishes their reading book at home we would appreciate if they could bring this back into school at the earliest opportunity. We would then ask that your child continues to read at home choosing their own book from home or a book from our classroom library. Thank you for your support with this.

Our topic of Scotland is going well. This week we have been learning about various Scottish characters from fiction and non-fiction books. We have explored characters such as Greyfriars Bobby, Maisie, Hairy Maclary and Katie Morag. The children were then able to retell their stories in the form of story boards and in their own books. Well done everyone for your fantastic work.

We have been working hard to develop our vocabulary each week through a variety of word boost activities. We are now furthering our understandings by identifying if the words we are learning are nouns, verbs, adverbs or adjectives. We are categorising these words on our word boost wall displays in our classrooms.

P4C say goodbye to Miss Roscilli on Friday. She has spent 5 weeks teaching and working with the children and we will miss her when she goes. We wish her the best of luck for the future.

Reminders –

Parents consultations take place next Wednesday (5-7:30) and Thursday (4-6:30) evenings next week. We look forward to seeing many of you then.

Primary 2 6.2.19

It was lovely to meet some of the parents at the “shared finish” yesterday. The children really enjoyed sharing their learning with you all. We still have our “shared start” on Thursday if you wish to come along and see what we have been doing in Number Talks.

In topic we have been learning more about some of the Arctic Animals and how they adapt to their environment. The children have made penguins, polar bears and are going to be making arctic foxes. We have managed to put a few on our wall display in the corridor. We have also looked at a polar food chain. The children have been learning about the words prey and predators. They worked in small groups to create food chain mobiles which are now hanging in our classroom.

In reading this week we have been learning about visualisation. The children listened to a story with no pictures and they had to imagine/visualise what the character looked like. They all managed to draw the character very well and some even managed to draw the character’s house from the story.

In maths the children have been working out the missing minuend and subtrahend. They have been using addition, subtraction, counting on and back strategies to solve these problems.

Homework is due in tomorrow. The children will share their activities with a friend in class.

Primary 7

Primary 7 assisted at the school’s annual Scots afternoon for invited visitors from our local community on Monday. They were gracious hosts and represented our school in a mature and respectful manner, as well as piping in the haggis !

All pupils have now been informed of their roles and characters for our senior school and rehearsals will begin in earnest. The subject of our show is gaming, a hobby close to many of our pupils’ hearts, they are keeping the teacher up to speed where necessary!

Your child was given a new identity this week …during our WW2 topic sessions, each pupil was told their new age, which family they belonged to and where they lived. The pupils had to think of a name and create their home or place of work. Using our magical powers we also transported them back to 1939. We will be following the lives of their new characters through the war years.

As you are aware each pupil has a novel to read as part of their homework each week. A plastic wallet was given to each pupil to keep their novel and literacy circle work together. It is imperative that each pupil keeps up the necessary reading so that can fully participate in our reading sessions.

P5 1.02.19

Hello from Primary 5.

 

This week we have started learning about the events leading up to the Scottish Wars of Independence.  We have learned about the life of King Alexander and the problems his death caused for Scotland.  We worked in partners to write a news report with his wife Queen Yolande and are looking forward to presenting these next week.  We had a discussion about the succession crisis and made a Ragman Roll, which was a document written at the time to swear allegiance to King Edward.  Many children have been talking about their progress with the big homework task and we are looking forward to seeing them in a week’s time.

 

In Maths this week we have been learning about fractions.  We can record fractions as mixed numbers and improper fractions. We have also been doing some work on mltiplication in number talks.

 

Primary 3 1.2.19

Our Knights and Castles Topic has been in full swing this week! We worked in our home teams on two different challenges. We worked in our groups to create a life size knight in armour along with weapons. We had to think of how to make parts of our knight move as well but we will finish this part of the challenge next week. Here are some of our knights in the process of being made.

We learned a lot more about what the medieval people did when under siege. We learned about attack and defence tactics, alongside some of the weapons they may have used.

As part of our maths, and science/technology, we worked within our home team groups and made a model similar to a trebuchet (a type of catapult). We tested the forces we needed to use to make the catapult hit the target of the castle. Our longest fire we measured to be 70cm!

Please look out for our yellow letters sent home about a shared start and a shared finish. If you are interested in coming along, the Primary 3 dates are as follows:

Shared finish: Wednesday 20th February 2.50pm

We will be showing you our number talks lessons and how we can calculate sums mentally. We will discuss how our brain works with different strategies in Maths.

Primary One 31st January 2019

We have had another busy week in P1 exploring more of our dinosaur theme.  This week we have been learning about the Triceratops and have been discussing lots of facts about what it liked to eat and what it looked like.  We will be writing about this dinosaur tomorrow and adding to our Dinosaur fact files.

In Language and Maths this week we have been completing assessments of the children’s learning so far this year.  We will be able to share this information with you at parents night in February.

We are looking forward to hearing how the first Families Connect meeting goes this week- I am sure the children are really excited to take part in some fun activities.

We took part in our very first Critical Skills challenge yesterday which was great fun! We had to work with a partner to decide on six items that a paleontologist should take on an excavation with them.  The children then had to come and share with the class what they had chosen and justify their choice.  All the children did so well and had fantastic ideas about why they should bring certain things.  Well done everyone!

P4C visit to Carmondean Library

On Wednesday P4C were extremely lucky to be invited to an event organised by Knightsridge Primary School at Carmondean Library. The P4 children at Knightsridge had written and illustrated fantastic story books for P4C to enjoy! Some books were talking books, featured props and models and one book was even written and illustrated in braille! There were also many other visitors there who enjoyed hearing some fantastic tales! P4C were a fantastic quality audience who listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and complimented the children on their work. Thank you to Knightsridge Primary for inviting us and for all their hard work to organise such a great event. Please see some photos below. Primary 4 30.1.19

Hello everyone

This week has been a fun one in Primary 4.

In maths we have introduced division and the children have been impressing us with their knowledge of dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. We will continue to work on this next week as well as introducing division and multiplication by 8. The children are learning about the link between division and multiplication. Any support you can provide your child with this would be greatly appreciated.

In topic Miss Clark’s class have been exploring DC Thomson and the world of comic books with Miss Roscilli. Today they made their very own comic strips all about meeting and defeating a dangerous Kelpie. They look fantastic so far 🙂 In Miss Donaldson’s class they have been exploring the world of Scottish mythical creatures! They learned about Kelpies and Water Horses and made excellent artistic creations that show several mythical creatures from Scotland. They look great!

Well done to Noah and Katie who recited their Scottish poems at the Burns Afternoon. The rest of Primary 4 also performed the Scottish song “Bananas” to visitors at the event. Well done P4!

Scots Afternoon

Yesterday, every Carmondean PS pupil performed to an invited audience in our annual Scots Afternoon. The event was opened by our Primary 7 drummers and our piper, Leo Brown, who piped in a haggis, which was addressed by Jamie Scott and Bendi Toth. Our guests were treated to song and poetry from all stages in the school and served up a Scottish lunch by our Primary 7 pupils. The whole prestigious event was organised and run by the Senior Challenge Group, who also put together a unique 2019 Calendar which our guests received as a gift. The comments received from guests as they were leaving told us that Carmondean is well respected in our local community and that our children are all stars.  Well done Senior Challenge Group and everyone else involved in making the event a great success.

Primary 2 29.1.19

Primary 2 have been learning about Inuits. The children have found out how they survive so well in the Arctic. The children have learned that they hunt, wear animals skins to keep warm, build igloos on hunting trips and they live in small villages in wooden/metal homes. We have now started to learn about what animals live in the arctic and why some of them rely on camouflage to survive. We are going to be investigating food chains to find out who is at the top!

In maths we have been using our addition and subtraction skills to solve missing addend and missing minuend questions. We have also started learning about money and what coins we use. Children also have a money homework task in their share it jotters.

In reading we have been looking at characterisation. The children have been identifying adjectives to describe what the character looks like and their personality. Last week we looked at a bad character and this week we are going to be looking at a good character. Children have also been reading aloud in class and trying really hard to add expression to their voices.

P.E reminders outdoor P.E is Tuesday (P2R) Thursday (P2M) and both classes have Mrs Ferguson for indoor P.E on a Wednesday.

P2M also have assembly words to learn.

Primary 3 25.1.19

This week we have learned about how to look after ourselves and stay clean and healthy. We did a glitter experiment whereby we put it on our hands and watched as it spread to everything we touched. (We also, at this point, had a brief discussion about the importance of using biodegradable glitter and what this word meant!) We discussed how this happens with germs every day and we can’t see them. This led to a discussion about foods and things we put near our mouths using our hands and we were all able to see why it is so important to wash our hands properly before we eat.

We will continue by looking at clean and dirty water, as well as healthy eating over the next few weeks.

The children did very well with their Burns poems, and although not everyone was confident in reciting theirs in front of the class in P3S, they all managed to it off by heart. Most even brought theirs to life with expression and gestures. Well done to Lauren, Ben, Alfie and Holly who went through to the class vote.

We enjoyed hearing all of the poetry in our whole school Burns celebration on Friday morning. What a talented lot of children we have! We look forward to sharing our recital talents and singing in front of the senior citizens at our Burns afternoon on Monday.

This week we will be creating life size knights with their protective armour and weapons and writing about how it would have felt to be a knight.

Reminders:

  • Please remember appropriate kit on PE days
  • We have had a lot of children losing or damaging the new books. Primary 3 have had the most letters sent out for replacements in the whole school. Please encourage your child to look after the books and bring them every day to school ready to practise their reading.
  • Please label all clothing coming into school, including PE kits.

Primary 4 25.1.19

Hello everyone

It’s been a good week in Primary 4 this week. Our topic of Scotland is now in full swing. The children identified where the 7 main cities in Scotland are on a map and used coordinates to mark them on their own maps of Scotland. They then worked in a group to research one of the cities in order to teach the rest of the class. The children took fantastic notes about the other groups posters. This was a tricky task but we were very proud of how hard the children worked.

This week was our annual Scots Poetry Competition. Well done to Brodie, Katie, Isla B and Noah who were chosen to perform their poems in front of the school. Thank you for all of the help and support you provided the children at home with learning their poems. All of the children worked very hard & performed their poems confidently.
A big well done to the overall P4 winners Katie and Noah. They will perform their poems to visitors to the school on Monday at our Burns Afternoon.

We have been continuing to practise and develop upon our multiplication knowledge in class. Any support you can provide your child with learning their times table at home is greatly beneficial. Next week we will be moving onto linking multiplication to division facts as we consolidate our knowledge of dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Your child should have received a letter home this week inviting you take part in shared starts and finishes that are taking place throughout the school. Primary 4s shared start is on Monday 25th February and shared finish is on Thursday 28th February. On one of these days you are invited to come into your child’s classroom to learn with them. The focus in both these sessions will be Numeracy. The sessions will be about half an hour long. Please note you should only come to one of the sessions as they are both very similar. Please see the letter for more details and if you have any further questions than please do not hesitate to contact us.

Primary 7 – 25.01.19

Happy Robert Burns Day!

Primary 7 had a fantastic Scots afternoon on Wednesday in light of Burns Day today. We are the first class to have had our haggis piped in by bagpipes which is a huge honour. Huge thanks to Leo who has worked so hard for the past 3 weeks to learn the music for us! We had our Address to the Haggis and Selkirk Grace performed by Alex and Aimee respectively, had some haggis and shortbread with juice and then sang songs and performed poems to each other. It was such a lovely afternoon and we must say thank you to those who stood up to perform their poems and joined in with the singing.

Our novels are beginning to grow on us all and we are having great discussions in class about our homework tasks. Everyone has really connected with the characters already and are eager to read their next section pages for Wednesday 30th.

In numeracy we are continuing to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and we have been looking at circles and measurement in maths. Can you change 20cm into metres or millimetres?

Miss Mulhern’s class have just completed their swimming block and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We learned many different strokes and all showed great improvement in such a short time! Mrs Muir/Mrs Wylie’s class, we are sure you are going to love it too!

We have now given out parts for the school show. Please understand that the staff have many ideas for the show and are working hard to add in more lines or singing parts where we think possible. If your child is unhappy with their role, they must speak to their teacher about it before Tuesday and we will see what we can do.
