Good morning Primary 3! It was fantastic to hear from you all yesterday, it definitely put an extra spring in our steps listening to your wonderful news and stories!

For today’s ocean themed activity we are getting our science on! We are asking, if you have the materials, to experiment with buoyancy. Before you begin, write your hypothesis, what do you think will happen and what do you think allows sharks to float? Follow the instructions and try to write your own science report on the attached reporting sheet as you are doing the experiment. science investigation sheet

Shark Buoyancy Experiment:

Materials:

Toilet paper roll

Marker

3 pennies

Balloon

Vegetable oil

Bowl

Water

Tape

Instructions:

Draw a shark on the toilet paper roll (or cut out a shark on paper and tape it on).

Tape 3 pennies, equally spaced, on the bottom of the toilet paper roll.

Fill the bowl with water.

Drop the shark in the water. What happens?

Fill a balloon with vegetable oil, tie the balloon closed.

Place the balloon inside the middle of the toilet paper roll.

Place the shark back in the bowl of water. Now what happens? Why do you think it happens? What does it tell you about how sharks stay afloat in water?

Numeracy: Today’s Numeracy is all about number square patterns. We would like you to use your times tables on this number square: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares. What do you notice about the times tables patterns? Do any of the patterns look the same? What kind of patterns do they make? Try as many different times tables as you can and see what patterns you can make. Try to do more than one times table at the same time using different colours and see what patterns you can make, what happens when times tables have the same numbers in them? You could also make it into a game with someone in your house, who can complete their times table first. Take turns to fill in the squares but remember that if you both need the same number to complete your table you will have to think carefully about when to colour it in!

Reading

Reading for today is slightly different from our normal Thursday reading.  Today it is about reading and talking about your understandings.

As you are reading the activities, you will be working on your critical thinking skills, working out the meaning of the information you are reading and thinking about what it is asking you to do.

It is not expected that you complete them all, there is a selection included that you can choose from. It would be great if you could complete them with an adult or a sibling so that you can share your thoughts and reasoning with them and have a discussion around your understanding.

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome to Mercredi, or Wednesday! We hope you’ve been having a fabulous week so far and we are very much looking forward to our Teams chat. Mr Woodward’s class meet is at 10am, Miss Smith’s chat is at the slightly later time of 10.30am. It’s always what we look forward to most about our week!

For today’s ocean themed activity all you will need is paper, some paint and then anything else you’d like to add yourself on top of that because today we are thinking of making hand-fish. As it turns out a handfish is an actual fish but our hand fish will be fish made out of your own hands! Just add paint to your hands and press your hands to your paper and then add eyes and a mouth and decorate the scene around it, we’d love to see a school of weird and wonderful fish and remember, we may all be different fish but we all swim together!

Maths: For maths today we are leaving weighing behind and looking at volume. Measuring volume means measuring how much of a liquid you have. For volume we use millilitres (ml) and litres (L). There are 1,000 ml in 1 L and in every 1 L there are 1,000 ml. Try these conversions between litres and millilitres:

One Reading group last week read about Winnie and Wilbur staying at home, just like we have had to do for months now. Have a little read of

the book and try to write your own Winnie and Wilbur story?

Here is a planning page to get you started. Remember, of course, your core targets. Remember also your paragraphs to show a clear beginning, middle and end. As a challenge, try to use speech marks within your story to show what might be being said. There are some useful phrases in the plan for you to use, but please pad your story out using descriptions. Show the reader with your choice of words, don’t just tell them what is happening.

Welcome Primary 3 to Thursday’s blog post! We’re now nearly at the end of the week which means we’re nearly at the weekend! For today’s Children’s Gardening Week ideas, why not try to make this DIY bird-feeder using a plastic bottle, some scissors, pencils, string and bird feed? Remember that anything using scissors and cutting into the bottle will need to be done with an adult! But hopefully the bird feeder can be used to attract all kinds of birds to your garden like the Blue Tits Annabel has had visiting her garden!

Bonjour et bon Mercredi! We made it to Wednesday and that means today we have our Teams catch up chat! It was lovely to see and hear from so many of you last week and Mr Woodward was impressed he finally got the whiteboard working so you could all have a play about and write messages and attempt to play noughts and crosses against each other! Maybe a noughts and crosses tournament is in order? The chat will be at 10am, looking forward to seeing you all there!

For today’s Garden Week idea why not try creating your own version of a sensory path in your garden? (Depending on the weather, maybe if it rains it’s an indoor activity?) Outline a path in your garden if you can, then using whatever you have that you will be able to walk on barefoot set out your path. Have a go at walking along your sensory path and try to describe using a few adjectives how it feels in each section. Get other members of your family to try it too and see if they felt the same things you did!

Imagine yourself on a spaceship and there is a button that makes anything you can think of. What would you make using the button and what would you use it for? Describe the spaceship you are on, describe what the button looks like and describe what you make with your button. Make sure to have a beginning, middle and end to your story with 1 problem you need to solve using the thing you make with the button.

The Empty Palace

You are the son or daughter of a king and queen. One day you wake up and the whole palace is empty. How do you feel being in an empty palace? Your mission in your story is to investigate and track down everyone in the palace. How did they disappear, what happened to them and how do you get them back?

Sands of Akwa

You have landed on a strange planet looking for some special treasure. What does the planet look like, who is with you and what are you looking for? While looking for the treasure you meet some people who try to help you, and some people who want to stop you. Who are these different people? Your story should start when you land on the planet, you meet the different characters and our adventure should take you to your treasure.

Tom Thumb and the Football Team

Tom Thumb spends part of the story stuck indoors when all he wants to do is go outside. Think of an adventure you would like to have in your local area once you are allowed outside again and write about it. Where would you go, what would you do, who would you be with? How does it feel being stuck indoors and how does it feel to finally be allowed outside again?

Stinky Street

In Stinky Street Franklin is trying to stop the sale of his house so he doesn’t have to move away from where he lives. Imagine that Franklin actually wanted to move. Where would he move to, what does his new house look like? What kinds of things are near his new house and who does he meet? Describe the excitement of moving to a new house and of meeting new people and exploring a new area.

Maths: Today we are looking at weight and converting weight from grams to kilograms. To change between grams and kilograms you have to remember that there are 1,000 grams (g) in 1 kilogram (kg). So 1,000g = 1kg, 2,000g = 2kg etc.

It’s Tuesday, it’s mardi, it’s already nearly the middle of the week! We have been delighted with the hard work and creativity you have all been showing us across these last few months and we hope you have enjoyed doing everything as much as we have enjoyed seeing it.

For today’s Children’s Gardening Week activity, if you have the materials, create a a fairy house for your garden. You will need a plantpot, or just something you can paint and can stand on its own, and some paints. Once it’s done leave it in your garden and wait for the fairies to come!

We will continue to post daily Numeracy, Literacy, RRS and extra tasks, however, the activities on the grid can be done in jotters, on paper, or as you see fit. Please complete what you can of it and do what fits with your schedule and family life. There is no expectation that every single activity is completed or indeed that the ones completed are shared with us. We are happy to see your work should you wish to record it for us and send it. Rights Respecting Schools Article of the week: Article 15 Freedom of Association with a focus on setting up or joining groups.

• During these times it can be difficult to stay in touch with other young people and groups that we are part of. Make a list of 5 children that you would like to get in contact with. Write them a letter or video call them this week to find out how their week has been.
• Think about a group or club you are part of. Create a poster or leaflet to encourage other people to join. Make sure to list all of the reasons why it is a good idea to join this group.
• The word ‘association’ is interesting. You have perhaps heard of the Football Association (FA) or the Automobile Association (AA) Look up the meaning of ASSOCIATION and explain to somebody in your home what it means.

This week is National Children’s Gardening week which means, should the weather be good, there is plenty of things for you to do outside or inside to get into nature and gardening! Some of the ideas mean having seeds to plant but there are plenty that you can do without having access to seeds too, including colouring and some recipes you could try out! Bonjour et happy vendredi Primary 3! The weather has been lovely to finish the week off and I hope that for your long weekend the weather continues to stay bright and beautiful and you can all get out in your gardens or take a safe and socially distant walk around some of your favourite walking spots!

Remember that Monday is a holiday so no work will be posted and we don’t expect you to do anything work related at all, enjoy the extra day and we will look forward to hearing all about your long weekend next week when we get back!

If the weather does turn bad, or if you find yourself with some extra time on your hands and you’re feeling creative, why not try this painting and drawing activity. First take a paper and a paintbrush and a paint colour of your choice. Then just let your brush wander over the paper and for even more randomness don’t look at the paper when you are putting paint on it. Then use the random patterns you’ve made to create a picture using coloured pens/ pencils/ crayons/ different paints? The great thing is this will be different every time! Happy Wednesday Primary 3, we hope you have been having a great week so far, we have loved seeing all of your great work and the activities you have been up to. We are loving your creativity and it is so impressive to see how much you are doing with your time away from doing work, well done everyone!

Today we have a challenge to set you all in light of not having the Olympics and Paralympics this year. You will need to find your school and then record what you’ve done and how long you did it for and there are possible prizes up for grabs!

Your maths today is all about looking at the area of a shape. The area is the space inside a shape. So imagine that all shapes are made up of little squares, to find the area you count all the squares. When writing your answers for the area of a shape you write it as cm² – the small 2 means ‘squared’. There will be shapes in future activities that don’t have squares drawn on and then you need to use multiplication, however we will worry about that when we get there! I will also put up an area instructional video in Teams to help you! Choose your own challenge level:

Good morning on this slightly wet and overcast Thursday, Primary 3. we hope the change in the weather hasn’t dampened your spirits! Bonjour primary 3! Aujourd’hui c’est Mercredi vingt neuf Avril, we’re nearly into May! We hope that your week has been interesting and productive so far and it has been so lovely chatting to you all and seeing examples of the work you’ve been doing. We couldn’t be more proud of how hard you’ve been working and how much enthusiasm you’ve shown! We will put the work you’ve been sending in the Class photos file in Teams for you to all have a look at. If you are able to, we will be doing a check-in on Teams today at 1:30 and we hope to chat to you all then. If you can’t make it today we will do another check in next Wednesday with a time still to be decided.

For your maths for today we are looking at 3D shapes and their properties. For each reading book here is a writing task for you to complete, please remember capital letters and full stops, joined writing and correct spelling. Write at least half a page of A4 for your writing but please feel free to write more if you can.

The Frog Prince

This story is all about being a good friend. Your writing task is to write about a time you have been a good friend to someone. Describe where you were, who you were with, what happened and how you felt during what was happening.

Attack of the Buzzles

In Attack of the Buzzles they land on a strange alien planet. Write a story about you exploring a strange alien planet. What does it look like, are there aliens there and what do they look like and sound like? How does it feel to be on a strange planet? What do you do on the planet?

Attack of the Centipede

In the story Tiger is shrunk and has an adventure with a centipede. Your writing task is to pretend you have been shrunk and placed in your garden/ a local park. What creatures might you see and what do they look like when you are small? How do you feel as you explore the world around you and describe in detail how everything looks after you have been shrunk. What kind of an adventure might you have where you are in your story?

Eric’s Talking Ears

Eric is able to talk to animals at the zoo who then try and escape the zoo. Your writing task is to imagine you are one of the animals and you do end up escaping the zoo. What animal are you, describe yourself. Where do you go and what do you do when you escape the zoo? How did it feel to live in the zoo and how does it feel now that you are out of the zoo? What kind of adventures do you go on outside the zoo?

Clever Monkey

Clever Monkey is a story about a family going on an adventure together. Your writing task is to write a story about an adventure you are going to go on with a member of your family. Where would you go and who would you go with? What would you do on your adventure and make sure to use lots of descriptive words.

Bonjour et bon vendredi! We hope you have all had a fantastic week and are looking forward to having two weeks off for your Easter Break.

Today we would have been going to the church and learning all about the Easter story and how important Easter is to Christianity. P3W would like to entertain you by giving you our takes on the Easter story. Each story was retold and created by the pupils in their groups and their mission was to get the story told in under one minute. This proved to be very difficult as there was a lot to fit in. So here are different versions of the Easter story in under 2 minutes!

‘Creating something from nothing. Start by staining your paper, you can use ink or coffee/tea. Once it’s dry start to use any medium to draw into the stains on the paper. Get ideas from the shapes and colours in front of you.’

Try writing a story either on a computer or in your jotters/ on a piece of paper. As an idea for your story: You wake up on Easter to discover that you have become the Easter bunny. What would your day be like as an Easter bunny? Describe your experience and what you do. Try to include a beginning paragraph describing the characters and setting, middle paragraphs describing your problem and some action that happens, and an ending describing how you overcome your problem.

Good Morning Primary 3, hope you have all been having a fun and productive week! We hope that you spend some time relaxing and having some fun on April Fool’s Day yesterday. We have been getting some great updates on what you’ve been up to, from the work you’ve been doing to the food you’ve been making. And the food looks amazing! Here are some of the examples of some great food that has been made over the last week, it’s making us very hungry!

If you have been able to make some delicious food, could you write up a short set of instructions complete with ingredients and we could put together a P3 cookbook?

In keeping with the food theme, why not try to develop your cooking skills with Theo Michaels, a former Masterchef winner who is hosting live cooking classes on his Youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/user/cookwiththeo Although some ingredients might be harder to find just now I am sure that as well as the live classes the back log of cooking videos he has will give you plenty of kitchen inspiration!

Today’s arts and crafts idea comes from a Dundee based mental health charity called Art Angel. They have been doing regular projects on their social media channels. If you have the items needed please have a go.  If you don’t have all the items see if you can maybe improvise with what items you do have at home?

‘Today’s home project is mono printing. All you need is a piece of plastic (old shopping bag) and some heavy bodied paint such as acrylic. Tape the plastic down to a hard surface, we used an old cardboard box. Paint on the plastic with a brush, either one colour of a mixture of colours. Gently place a blank piece of paper down onto the painted surface, then draw onto the paper using a pen or pencil. Once the drawing is finished peel back the paper and see what you’ve created. It may take a few goes to get the textures you would like, but just experiment and have fun.’
