Pupil Council Voting

Remember that P4 and P5 will be voting tomorrow (Wednesday 4th September) for who they would like to be in the Pupil Council this year.

If you are putting yourself forward to be in the Pupil Council, please prepare something to say about why your classmates should vote for you!

Good luck!

Fun with Probability

We had an introduction to basic work on probability for something a little bit different this week, as we head towards the end of term.  Work in this area also takes in work on Fractions and Information Handling which we are looking at in class just now so the game ‘Blocko’ fitted in well!

Each pair were given a board with sections marked 2 -12 and 12 cubes.  They were asked to arrange the cubes in any way they liked.

Some chose their favourite numbers.
Some placed them randomly.
Some placed one on each number with one extra placed randomly.

They were then told the rules of the game and were given the chance to rearrange their cubes once they had been given the full instructions!  When two dice were rolled, the total of the two numbers would be shouted out and if they had a cube on that number, they could remove it.  The winners would be the first to remove ALL cubes and shout, “BLOCKO!”

Some were happy with their choices and chose to leave them as they were.  Others began to think about our introduction to probability and began to realise that some totals are more likely to be rolled than others, given the number of combinations that can make them.

Random placement but changed as the photo below shows.
This pair thought there would be more likelihood that the totals 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 would be thrown.

We had a couple of competitive games with everyone keen to be the first to remove all their cubes!

For our second run through, we recorded the results we got and displayed them in a Frequency Chart.  We discussed what this tells us about the probability of rolling certain totals and we talked about what surprised us.  We did not expect 3 to be rolled so often given that there is only one way to make it!

It was a fun Maths time! 🎲

First Aid

Our Health and Well-being work this term has centred around the safe use of medicines.  This led us to find out about basic first aid techniques that should be carried out when minor injuries happen.  Discussions naturally developed into what would happen if….? We decided to invite Andrew Best, a First Aid Responder, to talk to our class and to demonstrate what would happen in more serious situations.

We were told about the first action to take on finding someone who is clearly unwell. Check you are safe and speak to them, gently shaking them, to see if they respond.
Check for signs they are breathing and, if so, put them into the recovery position and call for help.

We then had the opportunity to practise putting our partners in the recovery position.

Andrew and Jack then showed us what to do if the person wasn’t breathing.  He talked us through making a 999 call and emphasised the importance of getting help quickly.  We’ll talk more about this next week.

He talked us through giving CPR on adult bodies, children and babies.  We all got to experience what this felt like using his dummies.  We were surprised at how hard and deep you had to press down!

Andrew showed us how to use a defibrillator and we talked about where to find the nearest one to our school.

We would like to say a big thank you to Andrew and Jack.  Everyone has hopefully learned some life long skills today and, who knows, maybe a spark of interest for some future careers has been lit!

Museum Trip

Primary 4/5 visited The Shetland Museum on Wednesday 5th June to learn more about Shetland in World War Two.

Lots of changes were taking place in Shetland during that time and it was interesting to learn about how people lived and adapted to these changes.

We looked at World War Two exhibits, learning about the Home Guard, The Shetland Bus operation, stories about men who were fighting in other countries and how soldiers created their own entertainment here in Shetland to boost morale.

We learned that materials were rationed and it was common for children to make their own toys out of things they could find around the house.  We made our own peg dolls!  What a creative bunch in P4/5!

Learner Led Event

We hope you received your Learner Led Event invitation in your child’s Diary.  We are looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 29th from 5:00 – 6:30.  The pupils are excited to show you around!

We have been a little quiet on here recently…so apologies for that!  We have still be really busy though!  It’s been so lovely to have some sunny days and we enjoyed taking time to read outside during ERIC time.

Our World War 2 Topic is well under way!  The children have been finding out about what life was like during this time in History and have been set the task of finding out about their own family’s involvement in the War as part of a Home Learning Task.  We are really looking forward to hearing some special stories!

Our main focus for Writing this term is Functional Writing.  With Mrs Henderson, the class have been looking at the main features of newspaper report writing with the view to creating their own World War reports.

We used real newspapers to spot some key features in report writing.

With Mrs Smith, the class have explored advertising and how writing is used to persuade.  The children have worked with enthusiasm when creating their own brand of cereal.  Their boxes had to include many of the tried and tested ways to influence buyers!  These boxes will be on display for you to see next week!

In Maths, we have been working within the areas of Multiplication and Division and Information Handling.  The pupils have been gathering data from the classes and our local area and have been learning about the different ways this data can be displayed.  Please come and have a look at our results next week!

In the remaining weeks, we hope to enjoy an educational trip to the Shetland Museum to learn more about the War.  We also have a visitor coming to class who is going to help us with our Health and Wellbeing work, talking about First Aid.

Voar Redd Up

It was a beautiful day today for our ‘Redd Up’.  We went as far as the Croft House and worked hard to collect as much rubbish as we could.  The roadsides were actually really quite clean which is a good thing!  Thank you to our adult helpers.

How many children are lucky enough to have a field of ponies right next to their school?

Not too many unusual finds this year but we did find an empty cookie packet!
We saw some lovely stones along the way!

Well done everyone! Every little bit helps!

Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Dunrossness Primary School was decorated with odd socks this week ready for Down Syndrome Awareness Day!  Many pairs of odd socks, odd shoes and even bare feet were seen today!

We prepared a card and poem for one of our classmates to let her know how lucky we are to have her in our class.  We also learned to sign, ‘If classmates were flowers, we’d pick you!’

We watched a PowerPoint about Down Syndrome and did some activities that helped us realise we are more the same than different.

Finding classmates with the same interests as us.

We learned a lot of facts about Down Syndrome and many thoughtful questions were asked too.  Some we need to find out about but that’s what makes days like these so interesting for us all!  We all learn together!

We watched the song below and talked about its importance.  We decided that it shows just how many jobs a young adult with Down Syndrome can do and that everyone needs to be given a chance in all aspects of life.  We thought that this video can also link to life in school.  If one person is seen to be inclusive, that soon rubs off on all the others watching.

We’ve had a super day!

Interfaith Scotland Visit

We had a great visit from Frances from Interfaith Scotland.  She brought two friends to tell us more about their faith.

Haikal told us about his Muslim faith and showed us pictures from his pilgrimage to Mecca where he and his family prayed around the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest shine in the Grand Mosque.

He showed us his prayer mat which keeps him clean while kneeling and sitting.  The top of the mat must point towards Mecca.  They used to use a compass to find the correct direction but it’s easier now with phones to tell you.

Some girls tried on a Muslim headscarf, a hijab.

Dhammara told us about the 5 Principles of Buddhism and told us about the meditation he does.

Some boys tried on the Islamic skullcaps and there was one Jewish cap.  They would be held on by clips.

Finally, we listened to the meditation bowl that signals when meditation can start and stop.

We really enjoyed answering and asking questions.  This is the perfect introduction for our RME work next term!
