Primary 2 – Tuesday 19 May 2020

Good Morning Primary 2,

How is everyone today? Did you have a nice long weekend? Miss Pringle managed out some long walks with her dog and Miss Rafferty kept up her running and virtual keep fit classes. Did you do any exercise you could add to our Travel to Tokyo challenge? The instructions are attached below if you did – every little helps!

Travel to Tokyo Challenge

This week the Rights Respecting School Article we are focusing on is Article 28 – the right to education. This Article states that:

  • Every child has the right to an education.
  • Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child.
  • Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights.
  • Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

What do you think makes a good teacher? This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p5286T_kn0 might give you some ideas! Draw an outline of your ideal teacher and surround it with words that describe what that teacher is like. Miss Rafferty and Miss Pringle would love to see these and we look forward to seeing photos on your Learning Journal. The full powerpoint with activity ideas is attached below.

Article 28

Please find below the Learning Grids for the next fortnight. As a Primary 2 stage we have tried to increase our ICT skills (!) and have recorded some audio powerpoints to support your learning. We would love to hear your feedback about if these are worthwhile or not.

Comment below and let us know how you are. Please continue to upload your photos to your Learning Journal too – it is so lovely to see you all.

Have a great day,

Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty

Good Morning Primary 2,

How is everyone today? We hope you are managing to work through your learning grid activities. There were some lovely uploads over the weekend and we enjoyed catching up on those yesterday.

There are some fabulous lessons available on BBC Bitesize if you are looking for more ideas. Click the link below to take you to the correct page:

This week our Rights Respecting School article is Article 14 – Freedom of thought, belief and religion. This article guarantees every child’s right to think and believe what they choose and to practice their religion, as long as they are not stopping others from enjoying their rights.

Click below for the powerpoint that supports Article 14. Once you have explored the powerpoint complete the following task:

Imagine you have discovered a new planet to live on. What ideas do you have about how you would want all the people who live there to treat each other and their planet?

Please continue to send photos of you working on the articles – we collate all of these as evidence which will go towards our school accreditation.

West Lothian Council have also asked all our parents/carers to complete a short questionnaire about school lunches. We would really appreciate if you could take 5 minutes to complete the survey to support the council in improving our catering service:

Primary 5

Another busy week in P5. The children have been working hard on different areas of the curriculum.

The children are building with excitement about going to Lockerbie Manor.  Hopefully you received your letter about Lockerbie Manor and the list of items the children need to take. If you are unable to bring any of these items please contact us at school and we will see if we can help. We hope to see you at the meeting on Thursday 6th February where you will be able to find out more information and ask questions. Children are not to attend this meeting.

In writing the children are continuing to learn how to write instruction. P5G wrote about how to play a game and P5M wrote about how to make a sandwich. Some of the instructions given were very interesting!

The children worked on a challenge this week about Life in the 13th century. Each group had to research information about Life in the country, life in a castle or life in a burgh. They worked hard and have created a poster showing key facts and pictures to illustrate what they have learned. You will be able to have a look at the posters during Parents evening.

In numeracy all children are using their times tables’ knowledge to complete multiplying or dividing tasks. Some children need to practice their times tables so they can recall facts quickly and accurately. We are encouraging them to use Education City for this. Next week we will be showing this website to you during our shared start/finish sessions on Wednesday 5th February. We hope you will be able to join us at one of the sessions to practice your recall of the times tables!

Primary 3 24.1.20

This has been a busy week for us yet again topic wise. We have learned how to become a knight in the Medieval Times and learned that the process started at age seven! Our ages! We couldn’t believe how many chores and responsibilities they had at our age in order to prove themselves before becoming a squire, then eventually a knight.

We began making our own life-size pictures of knights and look forward to finishing them off to provide guards for our castle and classrooms.

In Science, we were introduced to the term ‘forces’ and were investigating types of forces, whether it be push, pull, twist or bend. We will investigate the forces involved with magnets next week.

We had our poetry competitions and MR Woodward and myself were blown away by the calibre of recitals this year for P3. The confidence shone from the children and every last child made an attempt to learn their poem. Thank you for helping your child learn these as it is an important part of the Scottish Curriculum. We have our annual poetry competition today as well so it is exciting times!

Child Smile were in this week checking our teeth and explaining to us the effects of sugar on our teeth in every day foods we may eat.

Miss Smith was shocked to learn that one packet of Drumstick Squishes had the equivalent of 33 sugar cubes in them! She’s put off for life!

Reminders:

Look out for a letter about our shared start and shared finish dates. The focus will be on Education City.

PE days – P3S – Wednesday, Thursday

P3W – Monday, Thursday

Please put a name on all items of PE kit and school uniform to avoid having lost property.

Thank you as always for your continued support.

Primary 6 6.12.19

Primary 6 have had an exciting week beginning our RME topic on Advent.  We went to the church where we took part in activities called Bubblegum and Fluff.  We learned about the true meaning of Christmas and made lovely tiles with Christmas symbols on them.  They will be coming home today.

In topic we learned about the sinking of the Titanic and took notes to create a timeline of events.

In science we have been looking at renewable energy and have started researching the different types and their benefits to the environment.

In Numeracy we have been working on multiplication.  Some of us would really benefit from revising our tables to enable us to complete tricky calculations more accurately.

In Maths we have been calculating the perimeter of 2D shapes.

We have continued to work on persuasive language this week are have planned a letter to tell Santa how ‘good’ we have been.

Next week we have our Christmas party on Monday.  Remember that children can bring party clothes to school to change into or go home for lunch and change there.

Outdoor PE moves back to Thursday next week.

Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Smith,  Ms Mathieson

Primary 5

Primary 5 are going to sing 500 miles by the Proclaimers at the St Andrew’s Day assembly. We have had very enthusiastic practices so far! The children have done very well to learn all the words in a week. Ask your child to sing it to you.

Our Money, Money, Money topic is progressing well. On Wednesday and Thursday the P5 area was a hive of activity. Some of the resources used were glue, glitter, party bags, pipe cleaners and lots and lots of sweets! All groups have now finished making their products and are now deciding on the price to sell them for. The children are trying to make as much profit as they can so some of the prices are a bit eye-watering! We hope you will come and buy the goods the children have made at the Christmas Fair.

We have also been making Christmas decorations for the small and large hall. Lots of glitter was in evidence again!

If your child has not returned their slip indicating when they can help at the Fair please can they do so as soon as possible so we can make up our rota. Thank you for your help and support with this.

In topic we continued with our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. The children have organised their groups and have decided on the product they wish to make and sell at the Fair. They also had to compile a shopping list of items they required and how much they would cost. Next week they are going to start making their products. Let the chaos begin!

P5 have been selling Children in Need wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. Sales are going well. On Friday 15th November the school will hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots.

In science the children learned about Scottish endangered animals. They have chosen the animal they wish to create a fact file about. They will complete this in class but can do some of the research at home. When we have completed the fact files the children will then present the information as a class talk. Look out for the instruction sheet about this coming home next week.

Any visitors in school have commented on the landmark models displayed in the corridor. They have been a big talking point when the children are passing by. The models will come home soon.

The last week in October has been a busy time in P5. Look out for the class newsletter which tells you all about the exciting activities we have planned for this term.

On Monday the children wrote persuasive pieces of writing to convince Miss Millar to display their models for our visitors. The children were able to use persuasive words and phrases to put across their reasons. We are pleased to report that all children were able to persuade Miss Millar that their models should be displayed. Look out for these around the school.

On Wednesday P5 organised Children in Need fundraising activities for the whole school to take part in. They will sell the wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. On Friday 15th November they decided to hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. Some children ambitiously thought they could come wearing all the themes. Good Luck with that!

In science we have started our endangered animal topic. The children learned about which animals are in danger of becoming extinct. They will be choosing a Scottish endangered animal to research and create a fact file all about it. They will do some of this research at home.

In Spanish, we have learned to greet each other and have now started learning the days of the week.  Sábado and Domingo are definitely the best days!  Ask your child why. We also started sound editing in ICT using the Audacity sound editing programmme.  This was a very popular activity and everyone was engaged throughout.

In topic we have started our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. Look out for more information about this coming home soon.

P5 have been working very hard this week. The children (and staff) will be ready for their holiday!

In topic the children have each made a leaflet all about their landmark model. Everyone worked really hard to make sure that their leaflet contained interesting facts about their landmark as well as other relevant information. We also tried to make sure they were eye-catching to look at by adding lots of illustrations. You will have a chance to read these on our open morning.

We have also spent some time looking at the different traditional foods from each country in the UK. The children then recreated a dish of a meal that they might find in one of these countries. They were all so creative and some even chose to use a variety of materials such as tissue paper and string to give their meal a 3D effect.  You will have a chance to taste some of these foods at our open morning on Friday 25th October.

Mrs Gilmour’s class had great fun making figures dressed in the national costume of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The children worked very hard and the level of detail in the clothing was fantastic. Some of the figures are very life-like!

In writing the children have been creating persuasive posters to encourage everyone to keep safe and healthy. Some of the areas targeted were- washing hands, picking up litter, lining up sensibly, eating more fruit. Look out for the posters around the school when you next visit.

Well done to Mrs Gilmour’s class who have brought their PE kit every week so got to choose a treat in PE. They chose to get the big equipment out and had great fun practicing all the different skills they have learned so far. Miss Morris’ class still have a few who forget their kit, please can you try to remember so we can also get a treat!

Thank you to everyone who attended Parent Consultations this week. It was lovely to meet you all. Remember we are here to offer help at any time please just contact us through the school office.

Primary 4 22.9.19

Hello everyone

We hope you’re having a lovely weekend.

It has been another busy week in Primary 4. In RME we have been continuing to learn about Communities and Belonging. We understand that some people choose how to live their lives based on the religion that they follow. For the past 3 weeks we have been learning about how people who follow the Jewish religion only eat certain foods called “Kosher”. We have also learned that they never mix meat or milk together, they even have separate sinks, plate and cutlery for meat and milk dishes. This week the children shared their understandings by creating a meat menu and a milk menu (starter, main course and dessert) containing only Kosher foods. We will continue to explore different food laws, looking at different religions and what they believe.

Our Viking topic is well underway. The children have been comparing how a Viking’s life was different to our own lives. However we have found some similarities too. The children noted how Viking boys often led very different lives to those of Viking girls and how boys and girls now have much more similar lives. We will create our own realistic Viking characters and will write scripts telling of some of their adventures. We hope to share these with you at parents evenings in October.

We have been very impressed with the children’s developing knowledge of time in numeracy. We have now explored both analogue and digital clocks and have practised o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We have also explored the differences between am and pm times and the children learned what activities in their lives that they do in a.m. times and in p.m. times. Next week we will explore time in 5 minute intervals using the digital clock. We will also look at longer periods of time such as weeks, months and years through using calendars. Please continue to support your child with telling the time at home.

Reminders
Homework share it jotters are not due in until Thursday 3rd October. All starred activities must be completed, the rest are optional.
PE days are Tuesday (Outdoor, weather permitting) and Thursday for Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson.
Parents Consultations take place on Wednesday 9th October 5-7:30pm and Thursday 10th October 4-6:30pm. Information regarding appointments will be made available soon.

Thank you for your continued help and support.

Miss Clark & Mrs Muir

Primary 5

A short but busy week in P5.

The children have been writing rules to keep themselves safe when using the internet and websites. They were very knowledgeable about the dangers and what to do if they experience any difficulty. We would appreciate it if you could please keep speaking to your child/children about internet safety and what they should do if there is a problem. In P5G the children also got to design a phone/computer of the future. They came up with some very interesting designs. In P5M the children created posters to demonstrate their understanding of Internet safety rules.

In Topic the displays the children are creating about Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are taking shape. They have been busy finding out facts about each country and trying to present them as imaginatively as possible. We were also able to incorporate ICT into this and many children now know how to copy a picture, paste it on a word document and then edit it. Each group will present their display to the class next week as they are now the experts on their chosen country.

Next Wednesday all of P5 are taking part in a Multi-sport Festival at DCHS. This is an outdoor event so please ensure the children are dressed for the weather. They will need trainers, joggers/trackies, sweatshirt, t-shirt and a waterproof jacket. You may also want to give them extra water to bring on that day. Please return the EE2 as soon as possible. Thank you.

You should have received the letter about the P5 open morning which will take place on Friday 25th October where the children will showcase their landmarks and you can taste a selection of food from Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Hopefully we will have lots of visitors for what promises to be an exciting morning.

Primary 6 13.9.19

Primary 6 have had another busy week.  In topic we have been learning about the conditions for children working in a mill at the start of the industrial revolution.  We have been quite shocked by how hard these children’s lives were.  We have also started looking at inventions and will shortly be starting our Big homework inventors challenge.  Details about this will be sent home next week.

In Maths we have been working on calculating numbers to 1 figure accuracy.  We have also completed our work on angles and can now successfully use a protractor to draw and measure angles.

In PE we have been working hard on our cross county running.  We have had a lot of success with this and most children have voluteered to take part in a cross country run at the high school next month.

Letters are going home today about our New Lanark trip at the end of the month, please look out for this and send it back to school as soon as possible.

Have a lovely long weekend.  We look forward to seeing the children return on Wednesday.

Primary 3 13.9.19

We have had quite a few letters from bossy Mrs Thunder this week, giving us our missions and tasks to help SummerWinter, our weather fairy. We had to learn about the water cycle and the scientific words. We then used our knowledge of the water cycle into a drama, where we became the water and had to think of movements to symbolise each stage. We had so much fun and filmed the whole thing to be used as a training video for SummerWinter.

Our next mission is to recreate a weather forecast in teams. We hope to do some green screen work with this and film it also. We can’t wait to see whether people have been watching the weather forecasts over the past few weeks to help with the language we should use. Hopefully there will be some information on this in our ‘Share It’ jotters.

We are impressing everyone with our number talks techniques and strategies for partitioning numbers and using it to add together numbers mentally. We need to practice subtraction, as this has proven a little more tricky.

Next week is a short week, however the children have asked to learn about rainbows and how they are created. We have some fun experiments planned to explain this.

Please remember we are on holiday Monday and Tuesday next week, and Share It jotters should be brought into school alongside reading books to be returned and replaced. New books will not be given out until old books are returned.

Thank you for your support have a great long weekend, we look forward to seeing you all when we return.

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward.

Primary 4 6.9.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy but fun filled week in Primary 4. We have been continuing to learn lots about the Vikings. This week we learned about the Viking homelands of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. We found them in an Atlas and marked them on our own maps. We then identified the Viking settlements in the UK. The boys and girls made excellent maps showing the routes across the North Sea that the Vikings may have taken to get to Scotland. We also learned about Viking long boats, what they were made of, how they were built and why they were so long and sleek. Next week we are hoping to make our own long boat models so watch this space!

In numeracy we have been continuing to learn about time. This week we focused on telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analogue clock. Next week we will use digital clocks to help us to tell the time. Please continue to practise telling the time at home with your child whenever you can.

Your child still has one full week to complete their homework. We would like to see homework jotters next Thursday in class so that the children can spend some time on Friday sharing what they have done with their teacher and each other. We are looking forward to looking through their first homework task of P4 🙂

In reading, each class has begun to read and explore their new class novel. Mrs Muir’s class are reading “The Legend of Spud Murphy” while Miss Clark’s class are reading “Ottoline and the Yellow Cat”. These books will not come home with the children however we expect the children to still be reading at home even if its just a few pages each week. Please record what your child is reading each week in their homework jotter.

Reminders –
PE days – Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor)
Homework due – Thursday 12th Sept (spelling, reading and maths activities should be completed. Other tasks are optional).

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Clark & Mrs Muir.

Primary 4 Update

Welcome to a new year in primary 4! Both classes have settled in really well and we’ve been very busy agreeing our class charter, our learning targets for the term and getting to know each other and the classrooms.

We have started our Vikings topic already and have been looking at the similarities and differences between our lives and the lives of Vikings.  We were all quite shocked that the Vikings sometimes took their farm animals to live with them in their houses!  We will be investigating lots more about the Vikings and incorporating other curricular areas including drama and art to help us with our learning.

In numeracy we will be consolidating the times tables we have already learned and starting to learn the 6,7,8 and 9 times tables. We will also be practising telling the time.  We will revise telling the time to quarter past and quarter to the hour and then focus on telling the time to minutes past and to the hour.  It would be great if you could practise telling the time with your child at home too.

Homework:

Homework will be issued every two weeks starting next week.  There will be a variety of activities, some will be starred which means these should definitely be completed.  There will also be other activities which are optional.  House points will be given for any optional activities completed.  We’ll share our homework in class every two weeks on a Friday.

For the first term we will not issue a reading book as we will be working on a class novel and doing lots of reading in class. However we encourage all the children to read books at home.  If you would like to borrow a book from school for your child to read, please let us know.

PE:

Indoor PE with the PE specialist Mrs Ferguson is on a Thursday and outdoor PE is on a Tuesday. Please could you make sure your child has a PE kit. If it’s easier the PE kit can be taken in at the beginning of the week and left in class until the Friday. Mrs Muir’s class have PE first thing on Thursdays so please could your child come in wearing PE kit and with their school uniform in their bag to change into after PE.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask us.

Thanks for all your support,

Miss Clark and Mrs Muir.

Primary 5 16.06.09

Primary 5 have had a fantastic week.  On Thursday we performed our show Rockbottom Rocks.  We were so proud of the children; they sang, danced and acted so well and had great fun doing it.  A big thank you to all parents and families who came to see us, having such a good audience made the performance special to us.

This week we have continued to work on our topic Charlie and the Chocolate factory.  We wrote stories about a visit to Loompa Land to bring the Oompa Loompas back to the factory.  Everyone has worked hard and really enjoyed writing these stories.

In maths we completed our weight topic with a problem solving activity afternoon.  We weighed out ingredients to make chocolate crispies, worked on studyladder and worked on problem solving activities.

We have been thinking about sports day next week and in PE we identified the fastest runners for each house for the house relay.  We look forward to seeing you next Thursday morning.  Remember to wear house colours if possible.

Have a lovely week.

Mrs Jamieson, Mrs Davies

Primary 5 7.06.19

This week Primary 5 performed our show Rockbottom Rocks for the school.  We were all very proud of ourselves. The  singing, dancing and acting was amazing and we can’t wait to show our Parents next week.  Thank you to everyone for their help in providing costumes.

We have been working on our project Charlie and the Chocolate factory.  We learned about the Cadbury family and completed posters to display our learning.   We made models of the Chocolate room which were very good.  We designed our own chocolate bars and next week we will be recording adverts to promote them.

In Maths we  have been learning about weight.  We have been learning about the relationship between Kgs and grams.

Some of us took part in the Triathlon at Deans on Tuesday.  We are all very proud of our medals.

Letters were given out this week about our next Health topic which is relationships and sexual health.  Please ask your child if you didn’t receive it.

We look forward to seeing you all next week.

Primary 4 30.5.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy week in Primary 4 so far. In P4C our learning of minibeasts continued with the story of “The Cautious Caterpillar”. This caterpillar was afraid to change into a butterfly because he loved being a caterpillar so much. However he was brave, made the transformation and was so pleased that he did. We discussed how we could apply that to our own lives and discussed times that we had been brave and tried something new and how this was important. All of the children are about to “transform” into Primary 5 children and some decided to write down information about themselves to share with their future P5 teacher. We will continue to discuss this and learn more about the life cycles of minibeasts through our topic.

We have been working extremely hard on the “Rock Bottom” Primary 4/5 show this week. Our dress rehearsal in front of the whole school and staff is next Thursday 6th June. You should have received costume letters home detailing what your child needs to bring in to wear during the performances. Almost all children should provide a plain but brightly coloured t-shirt and leggings/trousers that we are allowed to cut into zig zags at the bottom for a prehistoric feel! Please let us know if there are any problems with providing parts of your child’s costume and we will work hard to solve any problems. Thank you for your support with this. The final show performances to friends and families are on Thursday 13th June 2019 with a performance at 1:30pm and another at 6:30pm. All children are expected to attend both performances. If your child cannot attend for any reason then please let us know as soon as possible. Tickets will go on sale for this event soon.

This week Primary 4 were involved in the whole school spring clean litter pick. Our area was the perfect playground area and the left hand side and back fence on the field. We found lots of litter and we were happy that we could help Mrs Muir and her Eco Warriors along with the rest of the school to help make our playground beautiful. Well done Primary 4! Even the rain didn’t dampen our spirits! See some photos of us working hard below! 🙂

We were visited today by Mr Canning, the chanter/pipes tutor that visits the school weekly. All children were treated to him playing the chanter and the pipes for us! Today children will receive letters home to ask whether they would be interested in chanter/brass tuition beginning in Primary 5. Please fill in these forms and return them to school if your child is interested in taking part in a trial lesson next week.

Reminders –
PE days – Tuesday and Thursday
Homework (reading, spelling activity and one other activity due on Fridays)

Thank you for your continued support.
Have a lovely weekend when it comes.

Primary 3 28.4.19

Welcome back everyone! We hope you all had a relaxing Easter break!

This week we have started our new topic which we have decided to call ‘Ocean Commotion’. The children have been impressing us so far with some of their knowledge, but we still have so much more we are eager to learn. The children have suggested lines of enquiry for this topic and have outlined activities they wish to do as well, so the topic is truly made from their ideas and questions.

To kick start the topic, we have learned about a turtle called ‘Peanut’, and how his life was changed because of ocean pollution and the carelessness of humans. He has grown up in captivity, therefore we have been finding out more about his natural habitat and who he would have shared the sea with. So far, we have learned of the zones of the sea and the creatures we could find within. We will be creating a vision of this in our classrooms in a display which we are very excited about!

This week is also Lowport. It is Miss Smith’s first time going too and so we are all very excited! We have put together a little talent show by the pupils for our disco night too which we are looking forward to. We are a very talented lot!

Please remember, if you have not already ordered a packed lunch for Thursday and need one, to hand in the yellow form or speak to someone in the office. Also, if the EE2 information form has not been completed and returned, could this be done at your earliest convenience? In addition to this, medication should be handed into the office prior to the trip.

We will take lots of photos to share our experience with you when we return.

Homework will commence as normal this week.

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith and Ms Matheson.
