P2/1 update 23.11.20

Last week was another great week in P2/1 and this week we have lots planned.

Homework

From now on we are using an online resource called Seesaw for our homework. It’s a great resource which allows the children to complete activities on a tablet or phone and submit them online. Today we will be sending home a sheet with details on how to access Seesaw. We hope you will enjoy using it and if you have any questions about it please let us know. Reading books will continue to be given out on a Monday and should be brought to school every day.

Literacy

P1: In reading we will continue to use sounds we know and clues from the pictures to help us read our reading books. Thanks for reading with your children at home – it makes such a difference to them. Our new phonics sounds are: b and u. It would be really helpful if you could encourage your child to think of words which begin with these sounds.

P2: Our new sounds for this week and next are ‘oy’ and ‘oa’. We’ll be learning to spell words with these sounds and will write sentences using the words. In reading we are continuing to work on our summarising skills. It can be tricky to identify the main parts of a story but the children have been doing really well.

Numeracy

P1: We will be starting to learn about subtraction this week and will be using lots of concrete materials such as blocks and counters to help us.

P2: We are working on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and gaining confidence in counting both forwards and backwards. We’ll then be moving on to subtraction, first consolidating what we learned in P1 and then moving on to develop new strategies.

In music we’ve been using instruments to play different rhythms and to show our understanding of dynamics by playing loudly and quietly. The children have really been enjoying these sessions with Mr Shanks.

From this week we will no longer have Mrs Ferguson for PE but we will continue to have outdoor PE on a Tuesday (with Mrs Muir) and a Wednesday (with Mrs Steel). Please continue to wear PE kit to school on those days.

Primary 1 23.11.20

Good morning
Primary 1 have been very busy the past few weeks. We have begun a new interdisciplinary topic learning all about toys. We started this topic with a virtual visit from the museum services. Maureen called us on the class laptop and spoke about some of the toys children played with in the olden days. The children were able to investigate the different materials toys used to be made from and saw the differences between toys now-a-days and toys in the past. This week we have turned our role play areas into toy shops. The children are enjoying creating toys to place on the shelves and are learning to use money in the cashiers area. We are using this topic to explore forces and have been learning about toys we push and toys we pull.
In phonics we have been learning the sounds g, l, f and o. This week we will be learning about b and u. Thank you for all the work you have been doing at home to practise writing these letters and thinking of words containing each sound.
In maths we have finished our work on addition and are now learning to subtract. We will be using lots of concrete materials to support learning in this.
Homework from now on will look a little different. We are going to be using Seesaw to post a variety of activities each week. Seesaw is a fantastic resource which allows your child to complete activities on a tablet or phone and send them back to us. Your child will come home today with a sheet explaining how to access their personal Seesaw account. Please let us know if you need any help with this. Primary 4 30.10.20

Hello everyone

We have had a fun week in Primary 4 and can’t wait to see the children dressed up in their Halloween costumes today! We are sure they will have a fabulous day!

Yesterday your child should have come home with a class newsletter in their school bag. This details everything that we will be covering in class during the coming term.

Our PE days will continue to be on a Monday and a Friday for the next few weeks. Towards the end of November they will change when the one of P4’s PE lessons will be taken by Mrs Ferguson our PE specialist.

This week the children presented their class talks. Mr Woodward and I have been very impressed with the level of preparation and rehearsal that have went into creating and presenting these talks. Thank you everyone for all your hard work! If we have not heard your child present yet then we will hear them early next week 🙂

In Maths we have begun to learn about 3D shape. We have been exploring 3D shapes in our environment and discussing their properties. We will move on in the coming weeks to explore 2D shape and tiling with 2D shape. In Numeracy we have been learning our 6 times table. Please ask your child what facts they know 🙂 Next week we will explore dividing by 6 using our times table facts to help us.

Remember – Homework is handed out on Teams each Monday and is due in on Friday.
Please can your child bring a full bottle of water to school each day.

Homework Sheet – Monday 26th October

Remember you have two weeks to complete the activities on the grid. We will collect the homework back in on Friday 6th November. However reading books will be issued every week and please remember to bring them to school with you every day.

We had a super trip to the woods on Friday and we are looking forward to go back on Friday 6th November. We were using our non standard measuring skills to measure different items in the woods. The children did really well!

Halloween is approaching and we are looking forward to seeing you all dressed up on Friday. We have a few Halloween crafts and activities to do this week. We will also be writing a spooky story with lots of description, using our describing bubbles to help us.

We will be putting our prediction skills to the test this week in reading. They will be listening/reading short stories and predicting what they think might happen next based on what they have already read and found out about the characters/setting.

In maths were are beginning to work on our addition and counting on skills. We are combining sets to start and then we will be using number lines to help us count on.

We are going to be using the netbooks this week to practise logging on and off (typing in usernames and passwords), practise writing our names and changing the font and size.

In science we are going to be investigating the moon and learning about why/how the moon changes every night. We will ask you to take a look at the moon every night before bed to see if you can see it changing!

Good morning.
It was lovely welcoming the children back last week after the October holiday. We hope that you all had a fun and restful time. Here is the homework grid for the next 2 weeks. Homework 26.10.20 Homework will now be given out on a Monday with 2 weeks to complete it. This should hopefully give you more flexibility and time to do all the tasks. Reading books will be continue to be issued on a weekly basis. Please can you ensure that this book is brought to school every day so that we can read in class. The reading book is to be handed in on a Friday so that it can quarantine for 72 hours before a new book comes out on the Monday.
In phonics we learnt the sounds d and e last week and will be learning c and k this coming week. We are concentrating on writing these letters neatly and thinking of words containing the sound. Thank you for all your help with this skill.
In maths we are focusing on 2D and 3D shapes. Last week we learnt about a square, circle, rectangle and triangle. The children learnt to identify each of these 2D shapes, spot the shapes in everyday objects and describe them clearly to a friend. This week we are looking at 3D shapes. Why don’t you go for a shape hunt around your house or garden looking for 2D and 3D shapes.
A reminder that PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. It is now becoming colder and so please ensure that your child is prepared with warm clothing and sensible shoes.
There will be a PSA run Halloween party in school this Friday. Please remember to send in the permission slip with the correct money as soon as possible.

Primary 6 23.10.20

Hi there,

Hope you all had a lovely half term break and are back into the swing of things once again.

In Maths this week we have been looking at Compass points and calculating various angle turns using a compass. We have also been looking at our addition strategies in Number Talks and looking at the quickest way we can get to the answer.

In Writing we have been peer assessing our work using a variety of success criteria. We wrote a descriptive piece and checked for use of similes, metaphors and alliteration. There were some excellent examples and we were very pleased with P6’s efforts.

In RME we talked about the Golden Rule: ‘Treat others how you would like to be treated’ and came up with our very own. There were some lovely ones such as: Don’t hurt, help! Don’t sing by yourself, sing with others!, Build bridges not walls! It has led to some good discussions about current news events too and how we can all be respectful to others.

In PE we have moved on to some HIIT Training. We had a little taster of this yesterday and it was a little wet underfoot so please can you send children in with gloves, old gloves, as we will be doing the odd burpee or mountain climber which will require hands on the ground! This will be on a Thursday.

Next week all children need to bring in their inventions by Friday so that they can be quarantined for the following week’s showcase to each other and their partner class. Homework on Teams will also resume from Monday.

Primary 3 23.10.20

We hope you all had a lovely rest during the October holidays. It is great to see everyone back at school and raring to go this term. We have lots of exciting things planned.

Our Ancient Egypt topic has well and truly started this week. We came back to school with a letter from the museum explaining that because of current restrictions, they would not be able to visit us to show us Egyptian artifacts. Because of this, they are going to meet us virtually and then deliver the objects to us to be quarantined and then displayed in our class.

We accepted a challenge to turn part of our class into a museum to display the artifacts, so this week, the challenge began. We now have a part built pyramid and are excited to finish it.

We learned about the job of an archaeologist today and Miss Dig and Professor W came to lead us on an archaeological dig. There were traps, obstacles and rivers to cross. Armed with our brushes, we brushed away sand to reveal Egyptian artifacts. It was very exciting!

The children thoroughly enjoyed it. This is what they had to say, “I liked going outside to dig.” “I like finding the stuff because it was very interesting and tremendous to look at.” “I liked writing my story about the dig and I also like finding the treasures and displaying them.” “I liked finding the treasure and I liked writing the stories too.” “I like to put my imagination into everything, the dig and the story.”

This Monday, homework will be handed out again. From this date, there will always be two weeks to complete the homework tasks. Homework will be added to the blog for your reference.

There will be a newsletter to follow this week as well, so please keep an eye out for this to inform you of what we plan to do this term.

Primary 4 23.10.20

Hello everyone

It was lovely to welcome back the Primary 4 children back to school this week. We have got off to a flying start so far!

At the end of last term we finished our topic “Resilience through film”. The children wrote fantastic film reviews on either “Zootropolis”, “Moana” or “Inside Out” and showed great understandings of the plot, characters and setting of each film. The children were also able to discuss how the main characters in each of the films showed resilience. This week the children chose their new topic completely by themselves. We voted on our favourites and our new topic is… Animals! The children are very excited to begin this topic. We will be learning through Science, Technology and Art. We are looking forward to seeing how this topic unfolds.

Mr Woodward and I are looking forward to hearing the children’s class talks next week that they have been working on at home. We will begin to hear the children’s talks on Monday but will be listening to them throughout the week when each child is ready. There is more information on your child’s Teams page about this.

In Numeracy this week we have introduced the 6 times table to the children. They have made an excellent start on learning the stations of the 6 times table with a partner and also through listening to a very catchy song! We are sure the children will be 6 times table experts in no time!

Homework will resume on Teams on Monday. If you need paper copies of any of the activities then please let your child’s teacher know.

PE days will remain a Monday and a Friday each week for the next few weeks.

Homework Sheet – Monday 5th October

Last week in Maths, we continued exploring the properties of 3d shapes and learned about their vertices, faces and edges. The children had lots of hands-on opportunities to build models using cubes, cuboids, spheres, pyramids, cones and cylinders.

In Health and Wellbeing we continued to explore the Shanarri indicators for wellbeing through our lovely characters.

We worked with Included Isabella and the children designed a playpark which would be suitable for all. They came up with super ideas including ramps for wheelchair users, adapted swings and roundabouts.

This week in Maths we will continue to practise counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and will be exploring shape and colour patterns.

In Writing we have introduced a describing bubble to children which encourages them to add detail by using adjectives to describe size, colour, shape, texture etc.

This week we look forward to speaking to many of you at our online parent’s evening on Wednesday or Thursday.

Reminders:

-P2 PE days are Wednesday and Thursday and where possible this will continue to be outdoors so please can your child wear appropriate clothing and shoes to school.

Primary 5 2.10.20

Hello to everyone,

In Reading we have finished reading our novel ‘There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’. The children have become very much invested in the life of Bradley and there were a few tears at the end with how much Bradley had changed. The children wrote fabulous letters to their best friends and we are hoping they will be able to deliver these to them.

In PE Tennis lessons with Mrs Ferguson the children are becoming very proficient with the tennis racquet. The balls are now heading the right direction! We do have a few budding Andy Murray’s and Johanna Konta’s!

In Art the children have created pictures of Bradley using the Pop Art technique. This involved using different thickness of lines, dots and primary colours. The finished pictures look fantastic.

Homework started this week on TEAMS. The children had a spelling activity, a symmetry quiz and were learning about Article 3 of their Rights. Some children were able to complete the activities online. Some children would prefer to complete them on paper. With this in mind we will be sending home a jotter for the children to complete their homework in if they wish. This jotter can be returned to school each week or they can take a picture of their work and upload that to the photo channel in their Team.

Miss Herd will be teaching Mrs Gilmour’s class on a Monday and Tuesday from now on. She visited us this week and got to meet the children.

We are looking forward to seeing and speaking with you next week through Skype during Parent Consultations. This is our first time using Skype so please be patient if we run in to difficulties. Fingers crossed for a smooth running of the evening.

Primary 6 2.10.20

Primary 6 have been working very hard this week on their descriptive writing skills with a particular focus on similes. If you could use three similes to describe yourself what would they be? Ask other members of the family too! Our Numeracy focus has been on rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000 and in Maths we have been successfully drawing our own angles using a protractor. We have been learning the alphabet in French whilst consolidating our knowledge of French greetings and we have begun to take a look at our very own Scottish inventors as part of our new Topic focus.

Our boys and girls have been doing a fantastic job developing their fitness and stamina through our couch to 5k app. We will have one more week doing this before we move on to our Hiit training programme in the style of Joe Wicks. All of this will continue to take place outside where the Scottish weather will allow us so we ask you to make sure your child is appropriately dressed for this especially as temperatures have dropped significantly of late.

Homework started this week and we have been ironing out any problems with navigating your way around TEAMS as well as accessing it on various devices at home. Next week will continue in the same format with a Maths, reading and spelling focus. If there are any problems accessing these assignments do let us know as soon as possible.

Next week we will be having our first ‘virtual’ parent conferences. We are looking forward to speaking with you on line. You will receive information from our school office regarding the booking of appointments and how to attend each meeting through Skype for business. These will take place on Wednesday 7th October and Thursday 8th October.

Primary 1 w.b.28.9.20

Primary 1 have had another busy couple of weeks. We have taken a break from learning new sounds and instead are consolidating our learning of the letters learnt so far (a,t,s,i,p and n). The children have been practising finding the letters on a magnetic letter board, writing them neatly and thinking of words with each sound at the start.
In maths we have been learning the numbers 1-10, how to count out amounts and write them correctly. This week we are moving on to a short series of lessons on measure. We will be measuring how long different objects are using everyday objects, for example how many shoes long is the desk. You can practise doing this at home. We will also be using balance scales to explore the concept of weight, looking at the language of heavier and lighter. This week we are handing out homework for the first time. Attached to this blog is a grid with a few activities you can do at home to extend your child’s learning. Homework 28.9.20 number formation (homework) There are 4 starred activities which must be completed, the other 2 ideas are optional. If you would like to share the learning your child has done at home, we recommend that you post a photo and short comment on their learning journal. We are also handing out reading books this week. They are to be brought in to school every day since we will be reading with the children throughout the week. At the moment our reading focus is on book skills (identifying the front page, title and author and talking about what is happening in each picture). The reading books will be collected in on a Friday and new books issued on a Monday after a 72 hour quarantine.
A reminder that PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Your child can come to school these days in PE kit with a school jumper.

Primary 5 25.9.20

Hello,

A short but busy week in Primary 5!

In writing the children continue to work on descriptive pieces. This week we were looking at ‘My Favourite Place’, and we had lots of lovely discussions about the different places where we feel most calm, happy or excited. The children then wrote some wonderful pieces about their ‘Favourite Place’ using lots of interesting describing words.

In Reading the children are continuing to find out more about the characters in our novel ‘There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’. This week has been all about birthday parties- who we would invite, creating invitations and deciding what present we would buy. The children were then able to use the internet to try and find the cost of the present they chose. Some were very surprised at how expensive things were!

With Mrs Ferguson in PE Tennis lessons are progressing well. Many are good at hitting the ball with the racquet and making it go in the right direction!

In Numeracy the children have been working with numbers up to 100 000. This has included rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000; estimating where numbers are on a line; writing numbers in words and using digits.

Homework will start next week and will be on TEAMS. Assignments will include activities connected to Literacy and Numeracy as well as other areas of the curriculum. All children have been issued with their Glow logins and passwords again so all should be able to access this homework. If there are any issues please contact us at school.

Primary 3 25.9.20

Good afternoon everyone and happy Friday!

For a short week, it has been a busy one. Primary 3 have been working so hard on our mini Health topic. We discussed all of our buddies jobs in our community and even mapped out our community and all of the ways it helps people. We then created models of our dream communities from craft materials and even learned how to fold paper to make it 3D. Our dream communities involved lots of ways of keeping active with arenas, kick boxing studios, horse riding, roller blading ramps, play parks and pools. We talked about and made our dream housing to ensure we are safe, healthy and nurtured.

We created imaginative collaborative stories about our buddies and their work in the community. We took turns to write one sentence each and the stories twisted and changed depending on what that person’s idea was at the time of writing. They turned out very well and are up on display!

We used our ICT skills to type them up and then used ‘Audacity’ to record our stories by reading our parts of the story aloud.

Next week, on Monday, homework folders will be sent home. Homework will take the same format as last year, minus the share-it jotters. The homework activities will be put on a sheet and into the children’s folder. There will be no share-it jotter, however should you wish to hand tasks in, they can be written on the back of the sheet. Primary 3 will be given a little more responsibility every Monday, in writing up our little homework diary to remind us of our tasks.

We would appreciate it if the folders can be in the children’s bags each day at school in order for them to access their reading books. We use these in our lessons and Primary 3 reading work will be based on their reading books that week. Usually the reading books are completed over 2 weeks with some exceptions. If your child is the exception, further instruction will be given in their yellow homework diaries.

P4 25 9 20

Even though it has been a short week this week we have managed to pack a lot in and the pupils have come back raring to go and putting in so much effort. We have continued to look at developing resilience strategies and this week used ‘Inside Out’ as our inspiration to create our very own ‘Brain Boards’. The creativity and enthusiasm on display was great to see and they have created some spectacular pieces of work! We have also continued to look at the work of artist John Pule in connection with our topic and have created artwork based on his art style to celebrate our achievements. We have a very achieving group and they are fabulous at celebrating not only their successes but the successes of each other!

We will begin handing out homework starting from next week and the majority of this will be through Teams assignments with hand in dates and more detailed instructions posted there. Your child’s log in for Glow has been stuck into the front cover of their Homework Diary. If you are unsure as to how to access Teams please watch this short instruction video which will show you how to get onto Teams as well as navigate to find the assignments:

We have continued in PE to learn about skipping and develop our co-ordination skills. Pupils have been very full of energy for this topic and have been showing off all kinds of skipping techniques. It has also been lovely to see pupils helping and encouraging each other and teaching each other skipping skills!

Please remember we have PE outdoors Mondays and Fridays. As the weather is getting colder and potentially wetter please ensure your child comes dressed appropriately for the weather that day.

Primary 2 – 05 June 2020

Good Morning Primary 2,

How is everyone today? Did you enjoy seeing photos of your friends in our blog gallery yesterday? Remember to upload photos to your Learning Journal when you can. The photos could show you taking part in learning activities or may just be you having fun – either way we love to see them. We have also been keeping track of who is using Education City and it is lovely to see so many of you engaging with this. Keep up the good work!

With today being Friday we suggest you do a short spelling quiz – ask an older sibling or parent/carer to read out your spelling words and see if you can remember how to spell them. We usually do handwriting on a Friday so make sure all those letter formations are correct! Remember some letters have tails that go under the line, others are tall letters – take your time and see if you can get the sizes correct.

Friday’s usually mean a little French too – we have already explored the weather and have definitely seen a wide range of weather this week! Can you listen to and learn the song below? Do you remember what each phrase means? if not, use the internet to help you.

Primary 2 – 28 May 2020

Good Morning Primary 2,

How is everyone today? Hopefully you are all still happy and healthy – we would love to hear from you. Comment below to say hi!

It is set to be another sunny day and therefore let’s look at sun safety and how we can enjoy the sun in a safe way. There are several good things about the sun. It gives us vitamin D, it is good for our minds to learn and play outdoors, it keeps us warm and it helps plants grow. We do need to be very careful though. The sun’s UV rays can harm our skin. Have you ever been sunburnt before? If so you will know how painful it can be. You can be safe in the sun by wearing adequate clothing for example shorts and t-shirt and putting sun cream on any areas of skin that are not covered. A hat is also very important to protect the top of your head from the sun. Playing in the shade where possible is also a good idea and remember to drink lots to stop you getting dehydrated.

We have included an additional sun safety task for those of you who wish to do it. You will find a sun safety poster challenge attached. Can you design a poster that can be displayed at the beach to remind people to stay safe in the sun? Remember to use a title and attractive colours to make the reader want to look at your poster. Primary 2 – 26 May 2020

Good Morning Primary 2,

How are you all today? It looks like it is set to be another beautiful day. On the whole we have been very lucky with the weather during lockdown. On Thursday’s blog we are going to explore sun safety as hopefully this good weather is set to continue throughout June and July.

You may not know but today is National Paper Airplane day! We hadn’t even realised there was such a day but thought it might be fun to include it in today’s post. Paper airplanes have fascinated children and adults alike around the globe for generations. The day is usually celebrated with contests in two basic flight categories: distance and time in air. We have included instructions on how to make a basic paper airplane. Your grown-ups may have a better way of making one so ask them! See if you can persuade your siblings or adults to make one too and take them outside to race! As stated above there are two options – the winner could be the one that travels the furthest or the one that stays in the air the longest. You decide! Take lots of photos as we would love to see them! You could name and decorate your airplane too.

This week’s article was on yesterday’s blog. It has been lovely to see some photos of you working on the articles at home. Mrs Gilmour is compiling all your photos as evidence to put forward to Unicef to that Carmondean can be re-awarded our Rights Respecting School status so keep them coming!

Remember your Learning Grids are there to support your literacy, numeracy and learning across the curriculum. Choose a few tasks to complete each day and let us know how you are doing. Primary 2 – 22 May 2020

Good Morning Primary 2,

It is Friday! We all love a Friday at school as this means FREE TIME FRIDAY! Have you been earning all your minutes this week?! If so, remember to take at least 30 minutes of time to play with something of your choice (with your parents’ permission of course!).

The weather has been lovely this week and you have all been very busy. You will see a small selection of some of the photos uploaded to the Learning Journals below. We absolutely love seeing your photos so please keep them coming.

On a Friday in class we also go over our spelling words and do a short, informal test. Ask your grown up to read out your spelling words and see if you can remember how to spell them correctly. Can they make up a sentence containing a few of your spelling words for you to write too? Remember your capital letters, finger spaces and full stop.

Tomorrow (Saturday 23^rd May) is National Elmer Day. We have read some of the Elmer stories in class before. Elmer makes the world a much brighter place. So for this year’s Elmer Day we are encouraged to spread the positivity of Elmer.

How you can get involved:

Get creative and play with colour – make a rainbow, a jungle collage or a milk bottle Elmer.
Share Elmer stories and colourful pictures to spread some happiness.
Wear your brightest colours on 23rd May to celebrate Elmer Day.
Share your photos on social media with #ElmerDay
