PE 2.6 challenges

Good morning everyone. I hope you have been keeping active at home. I’m sure this lovely weather will be helping with that.

Did you know that the London Marathon was meant to take place this Sunday , 26th April? Maybe you knew someone who was going to be taking part or you know someone who has completed this endurance running event in the past. It will hopefully take place later on this year.

A marathon distance is 26.2 miles. That’s like running from Livingston to Stirling Castle ( Wow!) Since no one can run the marathon this weekend some of the charities involved with the marathon have decided to set a 2 point six challenge and I’d like you to see if you can do any of these challenges?

An exciting time has been had by P5 this week.

The children really enjoyed their trip to Bannockburn despite almost being blown away when we visited the monument! When we went in to the exhibition the children got to touch weapons, armour and shields that were used during the battle. We then got to witness the battle in 3D which caught many children by surprise and the screams were not just on the screen! We then went in to the battle room and the children were divided in to English and Scottish armies. In both classes the Sottish won. Hurrah! The children had great fun trying on the different clothes that were worn by the various soldiers. They also got to touch some fearsome weapons but they all came back with 10 fingers and toes! All children impressed the staff at Bannockburn with their knowledge and interest in this part of history. They were a credit to Carmondean Primary.

In reading the children are almost finished their Scottish Wars of Independence fact file. We are very impressed by the detail the children have included and we think they are impressed at the amount of writing they have done!

In writing the children wrote senses poems connected to a battle. These were very detailed and the children were able to capture the atmosphere in a battle very well. The children will re-draft their poem next week as we want to put them on display to showcase their talent in writing.

A big thank you to Mrs Smith and P6 who guided P5 through a session of HiiT training to celebrate Sports Relief. The children worked very hard and were exhausted by the end!

P5 visited the nursery this week to read with the boys and girls. The children read a variety of stories to the nursery pupils and enjoyed the experience greatly. They are looking forward to having this as a regular responsibility in p6.

Another busy week in P5. The children have been working hard on different areas of the curriculum.

In writing the children wrote about their adventures last week at Lockerbie Manor and in school. They had great fun telling each other what had happened and how they felt about things. Each child was able to produce a recount of their experiences. It all sounded very exciting!

Our topic on the Scottish Wars of Independence is progressing well. We are learning about all the battles that took place and the different tactics used to help each side win. There has been great interest in the variety of weapons used and how they work. Next week we are off to Bannockburn to learn even more about all these things. Please ensure your child has a packed lunch and is dressed for the weather as we will be outside for some of the time.

The children had great fun yesterday celebrating World Book Day. It was good to see the variety of books the children brought in and they had great fun sharing these with their peers. Miss Morris also enjoyed sharing a bit of her favourite book to p5M which was quite funny! The ‘Where’s Wally’ competition caused great excitement and the children were on the lookout all day for him. Well done to everyone who found the 5 hiding places. We are now waiting to see who will be picked as the winner.

In PE the children in both classes will be learning to play hockey which will be outside. This is in preparation for the Hockey Festival on 24th March. Next week will be p5M’s last Futsal session and both classes will be going out in most weathers after that so please ensure that the children bring outdoor PE kit on a Monday and a Tuesday.

Hello,

In primary 5 this week some of us went to Lockerbie Manor and some stayed in school.

The children who stayed in school have been doing exciting activities as well. On Wednesday we looked at Coats of Arms and how they are created. The children are now designing their own Coat of Arms and putting on things that are specific to them. We will be continuing with this activity today where we will be painting them.

Mr Shanks brought the virtual reality equipment along and the children got to experience a range of adventures – we went underwater and saw the Great Barrier Reef, we visited the Mackie ice-cream factory, we travelled to Edinburgh castle, we zoomed up into space and we visited ancient Egypt. Tyler said-“It was really fun to see all the different places.”

In art with Ms Fox the children made monsters. Oliver said “It was very, very fun and cool”

Today the children are going to create Scottish and English soldiers to guard the P5 classroom. When the other children return hopefully they will not be frightened!

They will also have PE with Mrs Ferguson where they will be getting all the equipment out and have a fun obstacle course.

It was lovely to meet you all at Parent Consultations this week. We thank you for your continued support to help us give the children a rewarding and stimulating learning experience.

We hope you were able to read the Recipes the children wrote about how to make a good friend. All were able to achieve the genre targets for writing instructions. They made a lovely job of re-drafting their writing and as a result produced excellent pieces of work. Hopefully some of these friendships become a reality.

We are hearing positive reports about how much the children (and parents!) are enjoying playing the games on Education City. The children can play any of the games on the site not just the ones in the homework/class section. If they find a game too hard they are able to play games in the level below to practice and reinforce their learning. Equally if they are finding games too easy the children can move up to the next level. We are definitely noticing a difference in the children’s recall of times tables facts so keep up the good work!

We continue to be impressed by the work the children are producing for their non-fiction book on The Scottish Wars of Independence. Each reading session we read the information together then the children summarise what they have learned in their own words. Many children are adding extra detail that they have researched in their own time. A great effort!

In PE P5G have started a block of Dance lessons and at the end they will perform their dance to a chosen audience. They will also choose costumes and props to complement their dance. We are seeing some interesting moves already! P5M will continue with their block of Futsal.

The children are on holiday Friday 14^th, Monday 17^th and Tuesday 18^th February. Tuesday 18^th is an in-service day for staff.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our shared start/finish. Even though we experienced technical difficulties in the morning everyone seemed to enjoy playing the games when we were eventually able to access the Education City website. We hope you now have a better understanding of how games can help the children to learn. We would encourage you to keep playing these games with your child at home.

In writing the children created a recipe for a good friend/friendship. It was interesting to read all the different qualities the children thought were important. The recipes have been written and displayed on the wall. You will be able to read these when you are in school for Parent Consultations next week.

The children are continuing to research relevant information for their fact file on the Scottish Wars of Independence. We have been very impressed with the detail some children have included in their writing. They have also drawn and labelled pictures to highlight key information.

On Thursday 13^th February PSA are holding a Valentines dress down day. Children can come wearing pink/red or dress to impress. Cost is 50p if they wish to take part.

Parent Consultations are next Tuesday (5-7.30pm) and Wednesday (4-6.30pm) Appointments can be booked online or contact the office if you are having difficulty doing this. We look forward to meeting you then.

Hello to everyone.

We have been busy practicing our song for the Scots afternoon. The children have been enthusiastically singing 500 miles. We think they sing it better than the Proclaimers!

All children recited their Scottish poem to the class. We were very impressed with the standard. It was obvious that many children had practiced at home and put a lot of effort in to it. Thank you for any help you were able to give your child with this. The winners from P5M were Erin and Rory. The winners from P5G were Tegan and Cayden. The winners will now say their poem in front of the whole school. Well done to everyone who put themselves forward.

The children seem to be enjoying out topic The Scottish Wars of Independence. They are currently working on a challenge to make a poster to explain what life was like in the 13^th century. There is lots of researching, drawing and writing going on.

The children going to Lockerbie Manor should have brought home letters this week giving you information about what to pack. There will be a meeting on Thursday 6^th February to give you more information about this residential.

Hello another busy week in P5.

In writing this term we will be initially concentrating on writing instructions. This week the children wrote notes to help them write instructions on how to use their wearable tech. Next week they will write the actual instructions in sentences, using ‘bossy’ verbs and time conjunctions.

We started our topic The Scottish Wars of Independence. The children have shared what they already know and what they would like to find out about. They completed a challenging timeline which gave them an overview of key events.

In maths the children will be investigating 3D objects and their relationship with 2D shapes. With Mr Shanks and Mrs Muir the children are learning how to measure angles using a protractor. They are also learning the names of the different types of angles.

All children have been given a fluency book to practice reading skills at home. Please ensure all children have this book in school with them every day.

The children have been working hard learning their Scottish poems. Some can already recite their poem without looking at the words. They are now working on adding expression and actions to enhance the poem.

Hello and welcome back to everyone. We hope you all had a restful holiday.

The children have been busy this week taking part in a STEM challenge. They investigated what STEM stood for (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and examples of where each one is used in our wider community.

The children then investigated wearable technology that is improving and changing our lives. Each group chose examples of wearable tech and created a poster to show how it helps people in everyday life. These were then presented to the class.

Next the children got to design their own wearable tech of the future. They came up with some exciting designs which we are hoping to enter in a competition where the winners see their technology made for real.

All children have chosen their Scottish poem and we would appreciate your support in helping them learn it at home. Children can then choose to put themselves forward to represent the class at the competition on Friday 24^th January if they wish.

In Numeracy all children will be working on multiplication, division and fractions. The children must be able to recall times tables facts quickly and accurately. Please can you help your child to learn their times tables your support would be much appreciated.

The Christmas Holidays are almost upon us!

The children have had a busy week doing all things Christmassy! The talent show on Monday was very enjoyable and there was a variety of acts on show. Ask your child which one was their favourite.

on Tuesday the children made crackers with Mrs Muir and Mr Shanks. They had to use a lot of different skills to make each part of the cracker and all children managed to make one. Hopefully you were able to pull it with them at home.

P5 performed brilliantly at the P1 and and P2/3 Nativities. Their singing was beautiful and the actions for the last song really added to the occasion. Well done to all in P5.

Thank you for all your support and help this year. We hope you all have a happy Christmas and a restful holiday.

In P5G during writing the children wrote letters to Santa to persuade him to deliver their presents. There were some good persuasive reasons given. I think Santa will need to deliver all presents now! In P5M during writing the children wrote letters to persuade Santa to give them a job as an Elf. They had to pick a specific job and explain why they would be good at it. It looks like Santa is going to have lots of helpers this year as the reasons given were so persuasive.

Primary 5 will be singing at the beginning of the P1 and P2/3 Nativities. The children have worked hard to learn the words and their singing is sounding beautiful. They performed in front of the school during the dress rehearsals and did very well. We are all looking forward to performing at the Nativities for the parents/carers/relatives/friends next week

In science the children are making good progress with their fact files on their chosen endangered animal. Many are beginning to finish and are now thinking about their class talk. The children have to use their fact file to help them prepare a class talk about their endangered animal. You may wish to help them prepare this over the weekend. Please feel free to email any power points to the school email address.

On Tuesday P5 had their Christmas party at 1.15pm. The children were very excited and the noise level was very high! However a good time was had by all and Mr Shanks was excellent at leading the dancing during The Music Man song.

Both classes held auditions for our yearly Christmas Talent Show. A variety of acts performed and then the children voted for their favourite act. It was a difficult choice as all the acts were very good. Well done to Isla, Tegan, Katie and Zara from P5G who will be performing a dance to Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin Stevens. Also well done to Tyler from P5M who will be singing Count on Me by Bruno Mars.

Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas Fair. The children all did very well selling their products and many stalls sold out! The children seemed to enjoy the experience greatly and organised their rota very well considering we had so many children ill that week who were unable to attend. Thank you again for supporting this event and making P5 enterprise such a success.

Both classes enjoyed the pantomime, Mother McGoose, on Monday. There was lots of audience participation and the children laughed at all the jokes.

Primary 5 will be singing at the beginning of the P1 and P2/3 Nativities. The children have been learning the words and they are sounding good already. We also have a solo performer, who has been working with Mr Shanks, and rehearsals have been going very well.

In science the children are making good progress with their fact files on their chosen endangered animal. They have found lots of interesting facts and pictures.

Primary 5 have started art lessons with our specialist teacher Ms Fox. They will be creating faces and figures connected to our next topic The Scottish Wars of Independence.

On Tuesday 10^th December P5 will have their Christmas party at 1.15pm. If your child is not going home for lunch they can bring in their party clothes in a named bag and get changed at lunch time. The excitement is building!

Primary 5 are singing 500 miles by the Proclaimers at the St Andrew’s Day assembly. We have had very enthusiastic and loud practises so far! The children are looking forward to singing it to the school. Ask your child to sing it to you.

We have been working hard to make our products to sell at the Christmas Fair. The children set up their stalls today and put up their posters. The stalls are looking bright and colourful and the children are confident of making a profit. We hope you can come along and support them by buying lots of their creations.

In science the children are continuing to research their endangered animal. They have started to create their fact file with lots of pictures and information. Please feel free to send in any pictures or information you think the children may be able to use. The children will become experts in their chosen animal and in the last week of term present their fact file to the class and answer any questions from the other children.

Both classes made advent calendars this week ready for opening next week. The children are very excited especially when the chocolate treats were produced!

Primary 5 are going to sing 500 miles by the Proclaimers at the St Andrew’s Day assembly. We have had very enthusiastic practices so far! The children have done very well to learn all the words in a week. Ask your child to sing it to you.

Our Money, Money, Money topic is progressing well. On Wednesday and Thursday the P5 area was a hive of activity. Some of the resources used were glue, glitter, party bags, pipe cleaners and lots and lots of sweets! All groups have now finished making their products and are now deciding on the price to sell them for. The children are trying to make as much profit as they can so some of the prices are a bit eye-watering! We hope you will come and buy the goods the children have made at the Christmas Fair.

We have also been making Christmas decorations for the small and large hall. Lots of glitter was in evidence again!

If your child has not returned their slip indicating when they can help at the Fair please can they do so as soon as possible so we can make up our rota. Thank you for your help and support with this.

P5 have been selling Children in Need wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. Sales are going well and we are nearly sold out. Thank you to everyone for supporting this good cause. Tomorrow the school will hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in their Children in Need inspired outfits.

In topic we are continuing with our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic. This week the children have decided on a company name and designed a logo. They are now creating posters to advertise their stall and the product they are going to sell. Each group has written a business plan so they know what order to complete their enterprise activity in. Our resources have started to arrive and the children are very eager to begin making their products next week. I think you will be impressed with the ideas and creativity each group has shown.

The children have been writing persuasive pieces about litter and the problems it causes our community. They came up with a lot of good arguments and we think that they got their point across very well.

In assembly we had visitors who spoke about the importance of the 3 Rs- Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle. The children seemed to be very knowledgeable about this. Our Eco committee are doing a survey at the moment about how much plastic is used during lunch time. We have been surprised at the amount of plastic collected. Look out for more information coming home about this soon.

In topic we continued with our Money, Money, Money enterprise topic where the children will be working in groups to create items to sell at the Christmas Fair. The children have organised their groups and have decided on the product they wish to make and sell at the Fair. They also had to compile a shopping list of items they required and how much they would cost. Next week they are going to start making their products. Let the chaos begin!

In science the children learned about Scottish endangered animals. They have chosen the animal they wish to create a fact file about. They will complete this in class but can do some of the research at home. When we have completed the fact files the children will then present the information as a class talk. Look out for the instruction sheet about this coming home next week.

Any visitors in school have commented on the landmark models displayed in the corridor. They have been a big talking point when the children are passing by. The models will come home soon.

The last week in October has been a busy time in P5. Look out for the class newsletter which tells you all about the exciting activities we have planned for this term.

On Monday the children wrote persuasive pieces of writing to convince Miss Millar to display their models for our visitors. The children were able to use persuasive words and phrases to put across their reasons. We are pleased to report that all children were able to persuade Miss Millar that their models should be displayed. Look out for these around the school.

On Wednesday P5 organised Children in Need fundraising activities for the whole school to take part in. They will sell the wristbands each morning for £1 or £1.50. On Friday 15^th November they decided to hold a dress down day. The theme will be dress up as Pudsey or Blush, wear pyjamas, come as a superhero, wear yellow or wear spots. Some children ambitiously thought they could come wearing all the themes. Good Luck with that!

In science we have started our endangered animal topic. The children learned about which animals are in danger of becoming extinct. They will be choosing a Scottish endangered animal to research and create a fact file all about it. They will do some of this research at home.

In Spanish, we have learned to greet each other and have now started learning the days of the week. Sábado and Domingo are definitely the best days! Ask your child why. We also started sound editing in ICT using the Audacity sound editing programmme. This was a very popular activity and everyone was engaged throughout.

P5 have been working very hard this week. The children (and staff) will be ready for their holiday!

In topic the children have each made a leaflet all about their landmark model. Everyone worked really hard to make sure that their leaflet contained interesting facts about their landmark as well as other relevant information. We also tried to make sure they were eye-catching to look at by adding lots of illustrations. You will have a chance to read these on our open morning.

We have also spent some time looking at the different traditional foods from each country in the UK. The children then recreated a dish of a meal that they might find in one of these countries. They were all so creative and some even chose to use a variety of materials such as tissue paper and string to give their meal a 3D effect. You will have a chance to taste some of these foods at our open morning on Friday 25^th October.

Mrs Gilmour’s class had great fun making figures dressed in the national costume of England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The children worked very hard and the level of detail in the clothing was fantastic. Some of the figures are very life-like!

In writing the children have been creating persuasive posters to encourage everyone to keep safe and healthy. Some of the areas targeted were- washing hands, picking up litter, lining up sensibly, eating more fruit. Look out for the posters around the school when you next visit.

Well done to Mrs Gilmour’s class who have brought their PE kit every week so got to choose a treat in PE. They chose to get the big equipment out and had great fun practicing all the different skills they have learned so far. Miss Morris’ class still have a few who forget their kit, please can you try to remember so we can also get a treat!

Aldi Stickers for Schools

We now have an amazing 180 stickers on our chart but we still need your help to get us to 300 before 3rd November.

If you are shopping at Aldi please collect the stickers ( sometimes you have to ask) and get your child to bring them into school.

PE weekly update

What an amazing week in PE!

The sports committee were adding Aldi stickers to our chart and we now have 120- can you help us reach 150 by next Friday please?

Primary 5 today completed a hat trick today for all bringing their PE kit so they get rewarded next week with their own choice of activity. Which class will be next to do this? Please help them remember!

P6 took part in the cluster cross country event at Dechmont Law and put all their training into practice. They showed they knew how to pace themselves and keep running all the way in the 1.1KM race. Fantastic results from Blair Flood as 1st over the line in the boys race and Abbiegail Beer 3rd in the girls race.We also has 9 primary 7s in the west Lothian championships race and they ran superbly. What a gorgeous autumn day for it.
