Primary 2 – Wednesday 25 March 2020

Good morning from Mrs Oliver and Miss Rafferty,

We would love to hear how you got on with any activities you completed yesterday – please post a message in the comments section below. Remember to refer to your packs and choose a Literacy, Numeracy and Across the Curriculum activity to complete today. Have you heard about the Rainbow challenge? The BBC are asking boys and girls to draw/ paint/ make a rainbow and put it in your window to spread hope – maybe when you’re out and about getting some fresh air and exercise you can count them and let us know how many you have found.

Last week we spoke about Sea Pollution and how plastic is damaging our oceans and animals. Here is an experiment if you would like to try it out with an adult at home to see the impact pollution has on sea life. If you’ve not got a jar or would prefer to why don’t you make a poster encouraging others to protects our oceans and animals.

Hope you’re all well Primary 2. Keep safe.

Primary 1

Good morning everybody!

We hope that you are all keeping well and are enjoying learning from home. It has been lovely to see all the creative activities you have been sharing with us on the Learning Journals. It is clear to see how hard you are all working!

From your learning pack, choose a literacy, numeracy and interdisciplinary activity to explore today. Make sure you help out at home and still have time to relax and play. It’s a great idea to get outside in the garden if possible so that you are still getting some fresh air. We will continue to post on the blog every morning with some further activities you can get involved with at home. We will also post a new online learning grid each week which you can access on the blog and on the Learning Journals. The activities have been designed to continue the learning we would be doing in the classroom. We thank you for all of the support with this!

Further activities

We are learning about fractions in maths (halves and quarters). Ask your child to draw a picture of a circle and a square. Can you fold these shapes in half? Can you fold them into quarters? Split a group of objects (this could be blocks/lego/stones from outside) into quarters using 4 plates. Do they divide equally? Or you could play the online symmetry game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching and select ‘pictures’. Discuss how the shapes are equal on both sides and how each side shows half of the shape.

For literacy we are currently thinking about ‘wh’ words. Split the yellow jotter into quarters and write a ‘wh’ word into each box/ draw a picture. For example you could write the words ‘whip, whisk, whiskers and when’.

If you are interested in exploring a little bit of science, ask an adult to boil the kettle. What do you see coming out of the spout? Discuss that the water is changing from a liquid into a gas.

We would like to thank you again for all of your help in supporting your child’s learning at home. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us in the messaging section of your online Learning Journals or by posting a comment on the blog. We are happy to answer any questions you might have and support you in any way we can.

Have a great day!

Primary 3 Wednesday 25.3.20

Good morning Primary 3 and your families.

We hope you are all well! Yesterday was a success in terms of learning for lots of you. We loved seeing what you have all been up to! We had photos uploaded of Science experiments, the work you did on assignments in your jotters and things you have been doing outside. Keep these coming as it makes our day!

Today, below, you will see a problem solving question based on time. We will post the answers later on tonight if you want to try it. If you feel like it, work in your share-it jotters, answer in the comments below, or in the posts section of teams and we will see if you got it right later on.

Hobbycraft today, Wednesday at 11am on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are doing Nature-Inspired Crafts. Log on via any of the above mentioned platforms and join in. Today’s craft will allow you some fresh air also! Let us see your makes 🙂

Here is Marley with his own Nature-Inspired Craft from yesterday:

Let us know if there are problems accessing anything, especially the reading resources from yesterday’s post. Please go have a look if you missed it, as this will provide you with books like the ones in class.

Here is the problem solving for today:

Here is a Maths worksheet for you to try. There are QR codes, if you have a QR code reader app on your phone, try hovering over the QR codes to mark your work. If you don’t, don’t worry, just ask and we will post the answers.

Here are your Number Talks for today:

A Rhyming Reading Task if you have managed the comprehension from yesterday. (Don’t worry if you’re still working through yesterdays task!)

Special Days Poems Rhyming Task:

Look at the Chinese New Year poem. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

e.g. The first verse has ‘old’ and ‘gold’. Other rhyming words could be cold and bold.

Try to write at least 2 sentences that end with your own rhyming words, e.g.:

It was during the winter and I was cold.

I went outside because I was feeling bold.

Minibeasts Poems Rhyming Task:

Read the Water Boatman poem. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with at least 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Try to write at least 2 sentences that end with your own rhyming words. If you can try to make your sentences about Mini Beasts.

Castle Poems Rhyming Task:

Have a look at Time Slip. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Try to write at least 1 new verse of your own using your new rhyming words. Try and make them link to the poem if you can.

Pirate Poems Rhyming Task:

In I Wish I Was a Pirate there are rhyming couples throughout the verses. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with at least 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Try to write at least 1 new verse of your own using your new rhyming words. Try and make them link to the poem if you can.

Good luck today everyone and we look forward to chatting to you all!

Mr Woodward and Miss Smith

Reading Resources for Home Learning

The Oxford Owl for Home website has lots of resources if you are looking for something to support your child’s literacy and numeracy development during the enforced lockdown. An adult has to register for the site (which is free) to make full use of the reources available. There are e-books, online games and loads of activities graded by age and school year. Please remember that in the English school year system, Year 2 is our Primary 3, Year 3 is our Primary 4 and so on. Give it a try – there’s loads to do and lots of really useful information for the children and for you as parents/carers:

We hope you are all keeping well and for those of you who are at home with siblings, we hope  you are being nice to them …we won’t mention names !!

Before we get on the our serious items …

What kind of car did the cowboy drive ?

An Audi!!    We can hear your laughter from here !!

We understand that TEAMS has been rather tricky to use again today . Remember to check our blog as we will post information here too.

We have added some lessons and activities in our FILE folders  – literacy and IDL . Within IDL we have included a health and wellbeing lesson on being flexible . There is a comprehension pack on the D Day landings . The pack is split into three section  – one star , two stars , three stars – MARKED AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH PAGE .

Rowlings  – 3 stars

Walliams  – 2 stars

Morpurgos  – 1 star

Read and complete your star set only .

Everyone should try the literacy task called Superman’s dilemma and the health and wellbeing task called Flexible ( in IDL file )

If there are problems opening files tomorrow , we will post images of activities on here and within our threads .

Take Care ,

Primary 1

Good morning, today is Mardi!

Hope everyone is well and that you had a great day yesterday. We are still missing you all very much. Here are some suggested activities that you can do:

For reading today you could look at the common words: ‘old’, ‘do’ and ‘going’. Why might these words be a bit more tricky? Do they sound out? With an adult, you could play corners. Put a word in each corner of a room and when the adult shouts out a word you should run to the corner that has that word in it.

For maths, have a look at halves and discuss what equal means. We haven’t covered any fractions yet so this might take some time to understand. You can split objects into equal parts between two plates. For example, can you split 8 lego pieces equally between two plates?

For topic, you can design and build your own beanstalk, like the one from the fairytale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Try be creative as you can! You could use lego or recycled materials.

Remember you can keep us updated with your learning through your online learning journals. We have seen that some of you posted on it yesterday, the work you are doing is fantastic!

Hope you all have a great day!

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 2 – 24.03.20

Good morning everyone,

Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty here. We hope you had a productive first day working from home. Again, look at your packs and choose another literacy, numeracy and learning across the curriculum activity. We would love to hear from you so please comment on this post and let us know what you have been doing.

Make sure you are listening to your parents/carers and helping out around the house. Parents/carers feel free to comment and let us know how well they are all doing!

Remember your Education City log ins, daily Joe Wicks workouts at 9am on YouTube, Glasgow Science Centre (you can find them on Facebook) are bringing a little bit of science into your home at 10am each day. Twinkl have also made a lot of resources free for you to use.

Today we would have been visiting the Tall Ship in Glasgow. Why not visit their website and draw a picture of you at the Tall Ship? You could also write a question you would’ve asked – remember your question marks!

Stay safe and remember to wash your hands!

Love Miss Pringle and Miss Rafferty

Primary 3 Tuesday 24.3.20

Thank you so much to everyone who was working from home yesterday and was able to share some of the things they have been doing and learning about. Mr Woodward and I loved reading your comments. Hopefully today we will have less teething issues with our new way of learning, but it is quite exciting to see all of the new skills we are all learning in the process!

The word boost stories will be uploaded later today for you in the files section of teams. Turn on your speakers and enjoy a little story read by either myself of Mr Woodward.

Each day at 11am, Hobbycraft are doing a Kid’s Craft Club. Today’s craft club is colouring. They have colouring pages free to download, print and colour in. Take time out to do some mindful colouring and let us see the results if you choose to do this.

https://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/ideas/kids/kids-craft-club

Education City had some problems yesterday too, with so many people trying to access it. Hopefully today will be better and perhaps you can try some of the multiplication and division games. Well done to Chloe who managed to send us a picture of her completed Maths sheet. It looks like you have been practising your times tables. 🙂

Your weekly spelling words were uploaded too along with the stories. Today, have someone read out the story to you and see how many words with your sound  you can hear, just as we do together in class.

Hopefully we will chat to a few of you later. Good luck today, have fun and stay safe!

Primary 7. 24.03.20

Tuesday 24th March 2020

Hello Primary 7.

As you know, using the TEAMS system was quite challenging for us yesterday.

We understand that sometimes you will be unable to access files and you may get a message saying ‘something went wrong’. This is due to the fact that the TEAMS system is very busy with lots of people using it.

Please know that we are doing our best to ensure you can access your work successfully.

Remember that you can complete your tasks in any order you wish. If you have completed everything for the day then you can work on the following things:

  • My Life So Far
  • Learning spelling words/ get someone at home to do speed writing with or play hangman
  • Read your book from the class library or indeed one of your own
  • Have a go at Fitness Monopoly from your packs.

We do not expect you to be working online all day. Some tasks should be completed in your jotter. If you cannot complete assignments online you can do these in your jotter!  It is also important that you take time to relax, play, exercise and spend time with people at home too.

Rules for TEAMS chat:

Please remember that this chat is designed to ensure you can access your learning and ask questions about your learning.

The chat needs to be as streamlined as possible as it can be difficult to follow everyones individual comments. Please do not reply as a new thread – instead to reply to someone click ‘reply’ to the comment you wish to reply to.

Before writing a comment in the chat please ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is my comment appropriate?
  • Has someone else already asked the same question? (If they have you may find the answer in their reply)

PE –

If you can, it would be great to start each day with some exercise. Joe Wicks ‘Body coach’ is running an online class every day at 9am (don’t worry if you can’t tune in at 9am – it will be available after 9 too!) Here is the link-

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

Health –

In such a busy, connected world. It is more important than ever to take time for yourself. Mindfulness is when we are thinking about what we are doing right now. Ignoring the past or the future, we just think about the present.

Today we would like you to try meditation.

Turn on your device speakers and find a comfortable, quiet space to complete the following task.

Click on the link, close your eyes and listen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk_qU7l-fcU

Numeracy –

Please go to your numeracy TEAM and you will be able to find out what your tasks are there.

Mrs Oliver numeracy group – you will be able to find your assignments in our P7 TEAM ‘assignments’ section.

Mrs Macaulay Numeracy Group –

Warm up – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button Click on times tables and select the 6 times table. In our numeracy group you will find a comment that asks for your score – please share it with me in the comments!

We are going to continue with long multiplication, click on the link above as a reminder of what we have been working on.  Have a pencil and piece of paper ready to try the calculation along the clip. Pause when necessary. Complete the questions assigned in the files section.

Calculators

Once you have completed your Ninja session please use the link below. It’s about mixed and top heavy ( improper) fractions , a reminder of what we have been working on in class .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggYdPef3Nuk

Complete the activity in the assigned to Calculators .

Looking for more maths to do? Why don’t you log on to Education City and play live against your classmates? Learn a times table you find tricky? Create your own maths game?

Writing –

This task can be completed in your blue jotters .

Primary 7 , we know that you will all be very sensible and will be listening to the advice to stay at home . However, we have thought of some fantastic places you can explore:

Narnia                              A Galaxy far far away

Hogwarts                          Mars

The Secret Garden               Under the Sea

Isle of Burk (How to Train Your Dragon )

Choose one of the locations above or indeed think of your own and write a description of it.

We know you all have fantastic imaginations, write about what you can see, what you can hear. Try to include the following to describe the setting:

Interesting Adjectives – to describe what you can see / hear.

Simile  –        comparing ( as or like ) as soft as a pillow , as black as coal , like snow on the top of  a mountain .

Alliteration  – The shiny stars sparkled ,         the slithering,  snake cast a spell

Repetition  – Deep , deep down at the bottom of the sea

Use these as your success criteria and ‘green’ any you have included.

WWII homework –

Your WWII homework is due today. In the files section you will be able to download the homework sheet you were given at the start of the year for reference. We are hoping that we will be able to share this altogether back in school and so we would like you to make sure you have completed this. Keep it safe in the meantime.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Macaulay, Mrs Wylie & Mrs Muir

Primary 3

Hi all, hope it’s been a good and productive day for you all and you are keeping yourselves safe! We have now uploaded Monday’s Number Talks sums (Please choose the set you are most comfortable with) and your spelling words for this week as well as the phoneme stories to go along with the Yellow and Blue Groups.

Primary 3 23/3/20

Good morning all, we hope you are well and are keeping yourselves safe! We have been so glad to see some of you being able to access Teams so far this morning and hopefully throughout the day the site will be running better to allow access to our assignments and files. We are looking forward to hearing from you and seeing the work you have produced! Remember that if work cannot be shared on Teams you can send them through Glow, going to Office 365 and selecting Outlook which will allow you to email your work to us. To access Teams go through Glow, Office 365 and select Teams. We have uploaded work there as well as the work in your work packs that were handed out last week. You can also communicate with us through the Blog by replying to this post. Although we are happy to see people doing work, remember to give yourselves plenty of breaks as we are not expecting every single piece of work to be completed, work through them in your own time.

We wish to reiterate that we do not want to put any extra pressure on children or parents as we completely understand how difficult a time this is for everybody so do what you can, when you can.

Remember, above all else, stay inside when possible, wash hands, keep clean, and stay safe. Keep up to date with how to stay safe and what the guidelines are on the NHS website.

https://www.scot.nhs.uk/

Thanks for your continued support,

Miss Smith and Mr Woodward

Primary 1 23.3.20

Good morning Primary 1s! We hope that you had a lovely weekend and managed to get out in the sunshine a little. Miss Christy, Miss Daun and Miss Cunningham are missing you all and hope that you are keeping safe and well.
Today we would like you to think about setting up a routine for your time at home. We have created a suggested timetable and will attach it to this blog. We hope it helps.

Home learning routine

Why don’t you try 1 or 2 activities from your ‘home learning’ pack today? We would love it if you could show us how you are getting on by posting in your online learning journals. If you are struggling to get on please email the school office (wlcarmondean-ps@westlothian.org.uk) and we will try to assist.
Look out for our daily blog post with more ideas of how to continue your child’s learning at home. We aim to post every morning before 10am.

Thank you for all your support
The Primary 1 teachers.

Primary 6/7 School Show – Against All Odds!

Today, just before school closes for the foreseeable future, our Primary 6 and 7 learners put on their school show for those children still at school. With so many absences, some children picked up parts this morning and ran with them. Others played more than one part and even teachers had to take parts to make the show a success – which it undoubtedly was! Well done Primary 6 and 7, you should be beaming with pride on your performance and your community attitude – we could all learn a lot form you!

https://youtu.be/4Q5qQXyV0KA

E Mail addresses

If you change your email address for whatever reason, can you please email wlcarmondean-ps@westlothian.org.uk or call the school office so that we can update this on the records system.  As you will appreciate this is extremely important given the current circumstances.  If you have not received email correspondence from us this week, it means we do not have an up to date contact for you.

Learning and Teaching During School Closure

Learning and Teaching will continue for children and staff at Carmondean PS during the current enforced school closure using the following platforms:

Primary 1-3 Children

Children will initially have been issued with a pack of materials to work through. Further packs wil be prepared and made available for collection from the school office on designated dates and times.

Additional learning activities can be accessed from the School BLOG. Communication with teaching staff is possible by leaving a comment on a particular post. Comments are moderated, so might not appear until they have been reviewed by the moderator (daily).

Primary 4-7 Children

Children will continue their learning online on GLOW through the Microsoft TEAMS App. All children who have been in school the week before closure know how to access their learning and chat with their teacher/s and classmates. For those who were absent, or need further guidance on usng TEAMS, you can view the information booklet by clicking the link below:

Pupil Guide To Accessing TEAMS

Any child who cannot remember their  GLOW Password and needs it reset should ask their parent/carer to email the school office, putting ‘Glow Password’ in the subject line. These messages will be reviewed and dealt with once daily.

Children have been issued with a home learning jotter ro record any work that is not expected to be submitted online. If your child was absent and did not receive one, the home learning jotter can be picked up from the school office. Deatils of dates and times to follow.

Primary 5

An exciting time has been had by P5 this week.

The children really enjoyed their trip to Bannockburn despite almost being blown away when we visited the monument! When we went in to the exhibition the children got to touch weapons, armour and shields that were used during the battle. We then got to witness the battle in 3D which caught many children by surprise and the screams were not just on the screen! We then went in to the battle room and the children were divided in to English and Scottish armies. In both classes the Sottish won. Hurrah! The children had great fun trying on the different clothes that were worn by the various soldiers. They also got to touch some fearsome weapons but they all came back with 10 fingers and toes! All children impressed the staff at Bannockburn with their knowledge and interest in this part of history. They were a credit to Carmondean Primary.

In reading the children are almost finished their Scottish Wars of Independence fact file. We are very impressed by the detail the children have included and we think they are impressed at the amount of writing they have done!

In writing the children wrote senses poems connected to a battle. These were very detailed and the children were able to capture the atmosphere in a battle very well. The children will re-draft their poem next week as we want to put them on display to showcase their talent in writing.

A big thank you to Mrs Smith and P6 who guided P5 through a session of HiiT training to celebrate Sports Relief. The children worked very hard and were exhausted by the end!

P5 visited the nursery this week to read with the boys and girls. The children read a variety of stories to the nursery pupils and enjoyed the experience greatly. They are looking forward to having this as a regular responsibility in p6.

Reminders

P5G and P5M PE- Monday and Thursday. Please bring outdoor and indoor PE kit for both days.

Spelling homework- due every Friday.

Numeracy homework- if given due every Thursday. Please practise all times tables over and above any other homework. Children can use Education City to play games.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Gilmour, Miss Morris, Mr Shanks and Mrs Muir

Primary 7 13.03.20

Friday 13th March 2020

This week in spelling the Morpurgos were working on the ‘oa’ sound. The Rowlings and Walliams are focusing on words with a ‘long e’ sound spelled with y. Next week is a whole review on all the words over the last 4 weeks – so p7 get cracking!

In topic we are still working on World War II.This week we are learning about the Blitz. The name comes from a German word meaning lighting war. We came into class this morning to find our houses have been destroyed by a terrifying night of bombing! We know the Blitz lasted for many months and a lot more destruction is to come! We have learnt so much more and hoping to learn more.

In class we created a silhouette of a soldier and placed it on a rounded black piece of paper and covered in in coloured tissue paper all over the back to create really effective stain glass windows.

In maths we have be looking at areas of triangles. What you do is find the area of a rectangle and then half it.

In numeracy we have been looking at negative numbers and where we can find them. We have learnt that you can find negative numbers on a thermometer and when working with money.

Every week the show gets better and better more props have been added, more lines known and more actions for songs have been coming left, right and centre!

Blog written by Ruiri Taylor and Mrs Macaulay

Reminders:

Spelling – Due Friday

Show – continue to learn script and song words

Education city – available for literacy and numeracy tasks.

My Life So Far – continue to add more information and illustrations.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Macaulay, Mrs Wylie & Mrs Muir

Primary 4 12.3.20

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy and fun week in Primary 4. It is great to be all back together in our classes again.

This week we have been celebrating Sport Relief. Primary 6 have been coming around the school selling wristbands and we also had an excellent PE session yesterday organised by Primary 6! It really tested our endurance and stamina but it was lots of fun! Tomorrow the children can come to school dressed in their sporty clothes (please no football shirts) for a 50p donation. We will also go outside and take part in the weekly mile as part of our celebrations.

In RME this week we have been learning about the Christian celebration of Baptism. We learned why baptism is important to Christians, the important people who take part in a baptism service and what happens during the service. We created our own dramas based on baptism and performed them to the rest of the class – they were great! In writing, we wrote an explanation piece telling others everything we have learned about baptism – well done P4!

Rehearsals for our class assembly have continued this week. Thank you for all your support in helping the children to learn their lines. Our assembly will take place in the large hall at 9:10am next Tuesday 17th March. If you can attend please return the form in your child’s school bag to let us know. We look forward to seeing you then 🙂

Reminders –
Homework was given out on Wednesday and is due in on Monday 23rd March. All starred activities should be completed. This will be the last piece of homework handed out before the Easter holidays.

Our PE days are changing – Indoor PE will take place on a Monday and Outdoor PE will be on a Tuesday for P4M and a Thursday for P4C. Please ensure your child comes to school with appropriate PE kit and their own water bottle. Thank you.

Have a lovely weekend. Thank you for your support.
