Primary 4 25.4.19

Hello everyone
It was lovely to welcome the children back to school on Tuesday and hear all of their holiday news. We hope you all had a fun and relaxing Easter break.

This week we have begun work on our new topic of Mini beasts. The children are very enthusiastic about this topic so far and have lots of ideas about how to make this topic very exciting! We started by working with a partner on writing down what we already know about mini beasts, what we want to learn and how we want to learn. Then we worked with a partner to research a particular mini beast in detail. The children wrote notes under the following 4 sub headings: habitat, defences, diet and characteristics. The children used fact files, the internet search engine kiddle.co and non-fiction books to research their mini beast. Next week we will begin writing a report about our mini beasts using the notes we have taken.

Next Monday some of the children will be heading on their adventure to Auchengillan. The children are all very excited! Please remember to hand in any medication your child will need during the overnight stay to the school before the end of the week if necessary. Arrival times on Tuesday will be communicated by GroupCall so please make sure the school has your up-to-date contact information. Thank you.

The children who will remain at school will have an exciting couple of days exploring our topic in more detail, completing art activities, going outside for PE and working on the school show. We look forward to being back together again on Wednesday to share all of our news.

In maths this week we have been learning the 9 times table. We have been using a song to help us learn all the stations of the 9 x table. Here is the link if the children would like to listen to it at home:ย 9 x table songย The children in P4C have even created a dance to go with the song! Please ask your child to show you it ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for your support. Have a lovely weekend when it comes.

Hello everyone

Primary 4 are having a lovely last week of term so far. We have been learning about the Easter story this week in RME. We have been learning about which countries traditionally celebrate Easter and why. We have also been learning how every country has different Easter traditions. Today we are making Easter crafts and practising our cutting, sticking and colouring skills. We also used paper fasteners to bring our craft to life ๐Ÿ™‚ In class we have been learning Easter songs to sing at the church on Friday morning.

In maths we have been consolidating our learning of different multiplication and division strategies that we have learned this term. The children designed posters that showed their knowledge of multiplication and division facts, shared strategies that help them to solve problems and created their own word problems! P4D shared their posters with the class and Mr Shanks made a surprise visit to P4C to see all their hard work. Well done to both classes!

Last week we had the pleasure of watching the dress rehearsal of the P6/7 show. It was spectacular and we all loved it – especially the amazing dance moves! We wish P6/7 good luck as they perform this show to their families tomorrow.

We have begun to learn the songs and now the dances for the P4/5 show “Rock Bottom”. The dances are very energetic and we look forward to getting to know them better. Some children have been given lines to learn over the Easter Holidays. Other children will be told more about their parts after the holidays.

This will be our last blog post before the Easter Holidays. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Tuesday 23rd April and hope you all have a restful and enjoyable Easter break!

Thank you for all your support.

Hello everyone

Thank you to all the parents, carers and families that came to watch our Space Assembly last Friday. The children loved performing to you all and Miss Donaldson and I were so proud of all their hard work – well done P4!

Now our thoughts turn to the P4/5 school show which takes place in June. The production is called “Rock Bottom” and this week we started learning the songs – they’re very catchy! We’re sure we’ll all have them in our heads in no time!

Our space topic continues this week. The children were very keen to learn how to create PowerPoint presentations in ICT. We combined this with our space topic and the children have begun to create PowerPoints based on any aspect of space they wish to learn more about. The children have used the child friendly search engine kiddle.co to research more about different planets, stars, moons and even black holes! These are looking fantastic and the children are looking forward to presenting their work to the rest of the class on the classroom SmartBoard.

There is a meeting tonight at 6pm about the upcoming Auchengillan residential. This will take place in the P4 classroom and entrance to the school will be by the fire exit next to the large hall.

Reminders –
PE days – Monday and Wednesday
Spelling homework due on Friday.
There will be no homework given out next week.
We kindly ask that all reading books are returned to school next week.

Thank you for your support.

Hello everyone

We have been very busy practising and preparing for our Parent Assembly which will take place tomorrow morning at 9:10. Thank you to everyone who has already handed in clothes for the children to wear in the assembly. The children can’t wait to perform to you all! ๐Ÿ™‚

Spelling homework was handed out again on Monday and is due in on Friday. Your child should complete look, cover, write, check twice and 1 activity. Next week will be our last week of homework before the Easter Holidays.

All children in Primary 4 will complete SNSA (Scottish National Standardised Assessments) next week during class time. All children have completed a practice test already and will complete 3 assessments throughout the course of the week (writing, reading and maths).

Yesterday all of the children designed and created straw rockets. We discussed how the force of the air in our lungs made the rocket fly! You will see pictures of the finished results in our class assembly tomorrow.

Reminders –
Indoor PE – Monday
Outdoor PE – Wednesday
Spelling homework due Friday
Black clothes for tomorrow’s assembly (a letter was sent home if this applies to your child).

Hello everyone

We have had a very exciting week in Primary 4 this week. We have been continuing to rehearse our space assembly which we will perform to parents, families, carers and the upper school on Friday 22nd March at 9:10am. Your child should have received a letter home about this now. Please fill in the tear off slip and return to the school as soon as possible if you can attend.

Next week we will begin to hand out spelling homework again after two weeks of charting the movements of the moon. Thank you for supporting your child with this at home. It has been really interesting to hear the children’s observations of what is happening in the night sky.

This week in writing we began to write a report about The International Space Station. We were fascinated to learn about how the ISS was created and how it makes one orbit around the earth every 90 minutes! This week we wrote our introductions to the report and we will continue to work on our reports for the next few weeks.

Today we were learning about how rockets take off. We learned that hydrogen and oxygen are mixed together to create a reaction. This thrust then allows the rocket to escape the earthโ€™s gravity and take off. The children then made their own rockets that took off into the sky. We went out into the playground and used film canisters, alka seltzer, coca cola and water to send our rockets flying into the sky! This was very exciting! Look out for a video of these rockets at our assembly next week!

Reminders:
New PE days โ€“ Indoor PE: Monday, Outdoor PE: Wednesday
Spelling homework resumes on Monday. Due in on Friday.
Reading pages to be completed at home.
Assembly letters to be returned ASAP.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great weekend.

Primary 4 6.3.19

Hello everyone

This week has been a busy but fun one in Primary 4 so far. The children worked well in groups to make excellent mind maps about each of the 8 planets in the solar system. Each group focused on one planet and finding out particular facts about it including how many moons it had, how far the planet is from the sun and who the planet was named after. They then taught the rest of the class about their planet by presenting their mind map to the class. The class then took notes on each planet and each child now has a solar system book that they have designed themselves using their notes. Well done everyone ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow we are visiting P2 for World Book Day. Primary 2 will be sharing their favourite book with us and some activities that they have been doing in class. Primary 4 will also be sharing their favourite books with Primary 2. We will also share books that we have created in class.

Today was our last day of PE with Mrs Ferguson in Primary 4. We’d like to thank Mrs Ferguson for all she has taught the children this year. Starting next week both sessions of PE will take place with your child’s class teacher. Indoor PE will now be on a Monday and Outdoor PE will now be on Wednesday. We will remind the children of this and it will be written in their homework diaries next week.

We have begun the process of planning our assembly which will take place on Friday 22nd March. We look forward to inviting you to join P4 in exploring their learning related to our topic of Space. The children chose to learn about this topic and they are very enthusiastic about it. We can’t wait to show you what we have learned. Please look out for speaking parts or information about costumes in your child’s homework diary.

Reminders –
Your child has a moon record in their spelling homework jotter. Please encourage your child to look up at the sky each night and record what they can see. Remember – if the moon isn’t visible encourage your child to look at stars or other objects in the sky and look for anything interesting. There will be no spelling homework for two weeks so that your child can focus on this task. We will continue to work on spelling/phonics revision in class.

Red Nose Day celebrations begin next Thursday with a bake sale in the afternoon. There will be a talent show assembly held on Friday and a dress down day on Friday to raise money too.

Thank you for all of your support.

Hello everyone

Thank you to all the parents, family members and carers that came into the P4 classes on Monday for our shared start and yesterday for our shared finish. It was so lovely to see so many of you working with your children on their learning in class. We hope you enjoyed your introduction to Number Talks and we hope to see you all soon.

This week in writing we have been continuing our report on the Apollo 11 mission and the first men to walk on the moon. The children have been very interested in learning about how this mission took place. They have turned into excellent reporters making sure they write down accurate facts for their readers. Next week we will be redrafting these reports into newspaper articles. We are sure the finished articles will look fantastic!

We have been enjoying watching the resurfacing work happening in the playground right outside our classroom window! We are hopeful this work will be finished by next week ๐Ÿ™‚

On Monday the children began choosing their own words from our class novels for our word boost activities later in the week. The children were excellent at identifying tricky words that they would like to explore in more detail. Please ask your child the words that they have been learning about during word boost lessons.

Next week we will begin organising our class assembly that will take place on Friday 22nd March. Parents/carers will be able to attend this assembly and letters about this will be sent out in due course. Our assembly will centre around our space topic and any lines your child will need to learn will be sent home in homework diaries in the next week or so. Please look out for these.

Hello everyone

It was lovely to see so many parents/carers at the consultation evenings on Wednesday and Thursday. We look forward to welcoming you into the classroom again on Monday 25th February at 9:05am for our shared start or on Thursday 28th February at 2:50pm for our shared finish. At these events you can work with your child in the classroom on some numeracy activities. We hope to see lots of you then ๐Ÿ™‚

This week the children have been working hard to learn their 8 times table and their division by 8 facts. We’ve been using a great new song to help us which is linked below. The children love singing along! Some of us have begun to look at using the written method of division too and are working well. Any support you can provide your child with their times tables and division facts would be greatly appreciated ๐Ÿ™‚

8 times table song

In our topic we have been looking at maps and photographs of Edinburgh some of which were created or taken over 100 years ago! We looked at some of the differences and similarities between the land, buildings and sanitation in those times and now. We noticed that there were no cars on the roads, the houses were built very closely together and many families stayed together in one room. We also noticed that many important landmarks such as the Forth Rail Bridge, The Scott Monument and Edinburgh Castle had been around for a long time!

In RME we have been learning that people’s beliefs can impact on the decisions that they make everyday. We have been focusing so far on Judaism and exploring what foods are Kosher and Non-Kosher. This has led to many interesting discussions.

Reminders –
The children are on holiday from school on Monday 18th February and Tuesday 19th February. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday.
There will be no homework given out next week.
Indoor PE will be on Wednesday for both classes.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Primary 4 6.2.19

Hello everyone

It has been another busy week in Primary 4 this week.

In reading each group has been working on a variety of activities related to their short class novels. Well done to everyone for reading their larger novel at home. Some children are even finished reading these already! ๐Ÿ™‚ If your child finishes their reading book at home we would appreciate if they could bring this back into school at the earliest opportunity. We would then ask that your child continues to read at home choosing their own book from home or a book from our classroom library. Thank you for your support with this.

Our topic of Scotland is going well. This week we have been learning about various Scottish characters from fiction and non-fiction books. We have explored characters such as Greyfriars Bobby, Maisie, Hairy Maclary and Katie Morag. The children were then able to retell their stories in the form of story boards and in their own books. Well done everyone for your fantastic work.

We have been working hard to develop our vocabulary each week through a variety of word boost activities. We are now furthering our understandings by identifying if the words we are learning are nouns, verbs, adverbs or adjectives. We are categorising these words on our word boost wall displays in our classrooms.

P4C say goodbye to Miss Roscilli on Friday. She has spent 5 weeks teaching and working with the children and we will miss her when she goes. We wish her the best of luck for the future.

Reminders –

Parents consultations take place next Wednesday (5-7:30) and Thursday (4-6:30) evenings next week. We look forward to seeing many of you then.
The children are off school on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th February for the February break.

P4C visit to Carmondean Library

On Wednesday P4C were extremely lucky to be invited to an event organised by Knightsridge Primary School at Carmondean Library. The P4 children at Knightsridge had written and illustrated fantastic story books for P4C to enjoy! Some books were talking books, featured props and models and one book was even written and illustrated in braille! There were also many other visitors there who enjoyed hearing some fantastic tales! P4C were a fantastic quality audience who listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions and complimented the children on their work. Thank you to Knightsridge Primary for inviting us and for all their hard work to organise such a great event. Please see some photos below. There is also an official photograph on the WL Council facebook page ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello everyone

This week has been a fun one in Primary 4.

In maths we have introduced division and the children have been impressing us with their knowledge of dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. We will continue to work on this next week as well as introducing division and multiplication by 8. The children are learning about the link between division and multiplication. Any support you can provide your child with this would be greatly appreciated.

In topic Miss Clark’s class have been exploring DC Thomson and the world of comic books with Miss Roscilli. Today they made their very own comic strips all about meeting and defeating a dangerous Kelpie. They look fantastic so far ๐Ÿ™‚ In Miss Donaldson’s class they have been exploring the world of Scottish mythical creatures! They learned about Kelpies and Water Horses and made excellent artistic creations that show several mythical creatures from Scotland. They look great!

Well done to Noah and Katie who recited their Scottish poems at the Burns Afternoon. The rest of Primary 4 also performed the Scottish song “Bananas” to visitors at the event. Well done P4!

Hello everyone

It’s been a good week in Primary 4 this week. Our topic of Scotland is now in full swing. The children identified where the 7 main cities in Scotland are on a map and used coordinates to mark them on their own maps of Scotland. They then worked in a group to research one of the cities in order to teach the rest of the class. The children took fantastic notes about the other groups posters. This was a tricky task but we were very proud of how hard the children worked.

This week was our annual Scots Poetry Competition. Well done to Brodie, Katie, Isla B and Noah who were chosen to perform their poems in front of the school. Thank you for all of the help and support you provided the children at home with learning their poems. All of the children worked very hard & performed their poems confidently.
A big well done to the overall P4 winners Katie and Noah. They will perform their poems to visitors to the school on Monday at our Burns Afternoon.

We have been continuing to practise and develop upon our multiplication knowledge in class. Any support you can provide your child with learning their times table at home is greatly beneficial. Next week we will be moving onto linking multiplication to division facts as we consolidate our knowledge of dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Your child should have received a letter home this week inviting you take part in shared starts and finishes that are taking place throughout the school. Primary 4s shared start is on Monday 25th February and shared finish is on Thursday 28th February. On one of these days you are invited to come into your child’s classroom to learn with them. The focus in both these sessions will be Numeracy. The sessions will be about half an hour long. Please note you should only come to one of the sessions as they are both very similar. Please see the letter for more details and if you have any further questions than please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hello everyone

We have had a lovely week so far in Primary 4. On Monday the children received their Burns Poems home with them. They also have a copy of this poem in school. We will be working on learning and practising these poems in school, however, any support you can give your child at home with this would be greatly appreciated. The children will be reciting their poems to the class next Thursday. We’re looking forward to hearing them! ๐Ÿ™‚

Your child also received a reading book home with them. Each week your child should read some pages from this book and this should be indicated and signed if possible on the white sheet in your child’s spelling jotter. Your child can read as many pages as they like each week.

In maths this week we have been working on data handling. We created tables showing information we gathered and also used tally marks accurately. The children now are working on creating a graph out of the information in their tables. These are looking fantastic and we’re looking forward to looking at the finished products. We will move onto looking at Venn diagrams next week.

This week we began doing a word boost activity every morning. Word boost helps the children to develop their use of more complex vocabulary when speaking or writing. This week we have looked at words such as “snaffle”, “teetering” and “turret”. This will continue each morning as the way we start our days in Primary 4 ๐Ÿ™‚

This week has been a very busy week in Primary 4. P4C welcomed Miss Roscilli to the class. She will be with us for 5 weeks and will be working with Miss Clark and teaching us new and interesting things.

This week the children began reading lessons using their new books. These books are short novels that we will only be working on in school. We will work on these books for 2/3 weeks in class before moving onto a new book. The children will receive additional novels home with them to read for enjoyment. They will read set pages each week as before. Please check your child’s bag on Monday as there will be further information in homework diaries and spelling jotters.

On Monday your child will also receive a Scottish poem home to learn. We will be working on learning these in class but we would appreciate if your child could also practise their poem at home. The children will be asked to say their poem in front of the class wb 21.1.19 and 2 willing participants from each class will be chosen to say their poems in front of the school at our Burns Assembly. Thank you for all your support with this.

In maths this term we will be working on multiplication and division. This week we started by revising our 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables and have been impressed by the children’s knowledge. Hello everyone

This has been a very exciting week in Primary 4. We had the chance to watch the Nursery/P1 and P2/P3 nativities this week. They were fantastic and helped us to feel very Christmassy ahead of our Christmas party on Wednesday. The children had the best time dancing, playing games and eating delicious party food. They all looked fantastic! Next week the festive fun continues with some Christmas activities, Christmas jumper dress down day on Thursday and a visit to church on Friday.

This week we finished our reading books from this term. Please ensure that these are returned to school before the end of term. We will hand out new reading books during the first week back in January.

Today the children developed their understandings of the qualities we have been learning about in Health lessons throughout this term. The children created dramas based around the values of fairness, courage, respect, inclusion, kindness and honesty. Each group created superheroes who formed part of their drama. The end results were fantastic! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have had an exciting week. On Monday we saw the panto “Beauty and the Beast”. The children loved joining in with the show! On Tuesday many children ate their Christmas lunch – it looked delicious!

This week in science we have been learning about Inheritance. We have been discovering that many of the traits we have are inherited from our parents including whether we have attached or detached earlobes or if we can roll our tongue! We have also been learning about how some of our behaviours are learned – like riding a bike or doing a cartwheel. Today the children used coins to create their own baby monsters with traits from their monster parents. Heads meant the mother monsters trait and tails meant the father monster!

Our Indoor PE day has changed to a Wednesday. The children enjoyed playing different catching games and also learning Scottish country dances which they will perform at their Christmas party next week.

The P4 Christmas Party is next Wednesday afternoon. The children can bring their party clothes to school with them to get changed into after lunch. Alternatively you may pick your child up at 12:30 then they can go home for lunch to get changed. We can’t wait! ๐Ÿ™‚

This will be the last week of spelling and maths homework this term. Both will resume in the new year. Each group will finish their reading books by the end of next week and all books should be returned to school by Monday 17th December at the latest if possible.

Hello everyone

Primary 4 had a very exciting week! The children worked very well in their enterprise groups to finish their products. Human Resources did an excellent job at supporting every group while Accounts calculated our profit; Quality Control worked on repairing bottles; Marketing picked our company logo and Advertising chose the best posters to be displayed. The reindeer sweetie bottles have now arrived home. Thank you all for your support of our Enterprise Project. It was a very valuable experience for the children to take part in.

Our PE days are changing. There will be a note in homework diaries about this on Monday. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on Wednesdays. Outdoor PE will remain on a Tuesday. We also look forward to art lessons with Ms Fox starting on Wednesday also. The children will no longer take part in the weekly mile on a Friday. This will reconvene in the summer term.

In writing the children worked very hard to create excellent beginnings to their story “The Magic Collar”. Earlier in the week the children had enjoyed exploring a story all about Lumi the dog with the magical collar who spent time with Santa and his reindeer in the North Pole. The children then wrote their own stories about dogs with magical collars trying their best to write in full sentences and include some of our special trickier “boost” words (glimmering, whirled, drifted and anticipation) in their own writing. The children worked fantastically well and these stories will be a fabulous read when they are completed. ๐Ÿ™‚

Reminders –

Christmas lunch is on Tuesday 4th. The children will watch a pantomime in school on Monday 3rd ๐Ÿ™‚
Children should read their reading pages by Monday 3rd December please.

Hello everyone

We have had a lovely week in Primary 4. Our Enterprise topic is in full swing! The children were allocated jobs within our business โ€œThe Reindeer Clubโ€ and created ID badges to show who they are and the role they play. Today, the children created our product โ€“ Reindeer Sweetie Jars. They are looking fantastic! The children worked so well with lots of different materials and listened carefully to instructions. We will decide upon what sweeties the jars will contain next week and then our finished products will be complete!

In maths we have been learning how to mentally subtract 2 digit numbers using a variety of strategies. We have been using a hundred square effectively to speed up our calculations. Next week we will be mentally subtracting within 3 digit numbers.

Next week there will be no Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson. PE with Mrs Ferguson will resume the following week however our Indoor PE day will change from a Thursday to a Wednesday afternoon. This information will be in the childrenโ€™s homework diary closer to the time. Outdoor PE will stay on a Tuesday.

Hello everyone

We have had a busy but interesting week in Primary 4.

In maths we have been learning how to answer subtraction questions using the written method. The children have been working hard to exchange when they do not have the number of ones required. We have also been practising quick recall of subtraction facts within 20. Please practise these facts with your child at home.

In writing we wrote scripts in groups of 3. We were telling imaginative stories about the Vikings we had created previously. The children worked very hard to incorporate stage directions into their scripts. They also used colons when introducing what a character was about to say. Next week the children will act out their scripts in front of an audience. We canโ€™t wait to see the finished products!

We began exploring our new topic of Enterprise this week. The children discussed what they wanted to learn and how they want to learn. They also came up with some ideas for the name of our company and filled in job application forms for different roles within our business. We will be making reindeer sweetie bottles to sell to family and friends. The children are very excited and weโ€™re sure that the finished products will be fabulous! ๐Ÿ™‚

The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. Tickets are available from the school office or able to be purchased on the night.

Letters were sent out earlier this week for the school Christmas Lunch. This will take place on Tuesday 4th December. Children should order their lunch by next Wednesday or they will not be able to have a Christmas lunch on this day. If your child does not wish to have a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school on this day.

Hello everyone

Weโ€™ve had a good week in Primary 4 so far. In writing we finished writing our fabulous Halloween stories and they are fantastic. They were filled with adjectives, exciting details and spooky characters! Well done boys and girls!

In reading the children have been working hard to read their books carefully looking for tricky words. They have then been beginning to use a dictionary to search for the definitions of these words in order to develop their understandings. This task has been challenging but the children have been working so hard and are developing their ability to use a dictionary quickly and effectively.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day in Primary 4 as we host our โ€œViking Bake Offโ€ event. Miss Millar and Mr Shanks will judge our creations! The children will make sweet oat cakes with honey and will get to taste their own handiwork! We canโ€™t wait to see how they turn out ๐Ÿ™‚

Christmas Fair letters have now been sent home along with raffle tickets. The Christmas Fair is on Friday 30th November from 6-8pm. You can buy tickets by returning the tear off slip to school or speaking to office staff.
