Writing: For this week’s writing we are jumping back into space and we are going to spend a day on the International Space Station. Watch this short video to see 2 real astronauts on the ISS and what they get up to on board – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgRMAVoHRbk

Write a diary entry of at least half a page of A4 about a day in space. What would you do during the day, what things would you see, who would you speak to and what would you say, how would you enjoy yourselves, what would it feel like and how would a day on the ISS make you feel? Remember to SHOW the reader what you see and do, don’t just tell them. Use your descriptions and choose the best words!

Maths: For today’s maths we are looking at Tesselation. Tesselation is the creation of patterns using shapes tiled together, e.g.

Your challenge is to create your own tesselation pattern. You can draw the shapes, using a ruler for straight lines, you can use Paint or another art programme on your computer, or you could go outside and create a tesselated pattern in your garden using natural materials.

Good morning everyone,

I hope you had a restful Monday and are ready for some new activities this week.

Reminders for this week:

  • We have our class online check-in tomorrow on Teams at 10am.
  • Carmondean Primary School have registered with Get Set. This will allow families to get active together at home and log their activity to their school team. There will be chances to win weekly prizes, for teams to beat weekly goals and also share their activity to win amazing prizes like fitness trackers. Article of the week:

Article 28 – The Right to an Education.

Some of the activities include watching: Be a Mr Jenson for inspiration on what makes a good teacher. Can you think of words to describe what a really good teacher would be like?

Do the same as above, but this time, think of words to describe what a really good learner would be like.

Imagine you have been asked to create your ideal lesson timetable for a day or a week at home or in school. Plan it out and decide what you would include and what you would leave out. Make sure it will provide children with a really good quality education!

Watch The Right to Education and use it to write a poem about education and learning.

Go have a look at The Book of Hopes and read through some of the poems and short stories together. Choose one you like best and teach someone else about it and why it stood out to you.

Primary 3 Friday 8th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3.

Today is a special day indeed. Does anyone know why?

No, not just because it is Free Time Friday day, it’s because it is VE Day!

VE stands for Victory in Europe and this day is celebrated and remembered. On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany’s surrender the day before. It is important to remember that the war was sill being fought on this day in other areas of the world and lots of the soldiers were still being held as prisoners of war elsewhere as well. To mark VE Day, there is a 1 minute silence at 11am. Lots of online things are happening to celebreate VE Day today. Let us know if you do anything with your family.

Indoor and Outdoor Activity Sheet

This week our Topic Challenge is about living in Space. Tim Peake was the first official British astronaut to walk in space in 2016 and so part of your challenge is to find out all about him. The main part of your challenge is to design your own livable space habitat. Remember our needs and wants challenge? Think about what you would need to survive and how you might get it/ make it/ grow it in space. Design your space habitat and then if you have time and you have asked permission you could try building a model. The challenge will also be posted in the Interdisciplinary folder in Teams.

Good morning everyone! Yesterday was our second ever class call and it was so lovely to speak to you all again and hear your voices sounding happy and healthy. It really is the highlight of our weeks! We hope you made the most of the sunshine after our call, the weather was beautiful.

Maths – Babylonian Number system:

Primary 3 Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning Primary 3 and welcome back! Please remember there is a class check-in at 1:30pm for anyone who is available to join. Have a think in advance of something you have been proud of learning during the time the schools have been closed.

Well done to everyone who found out Hubble’s birthday! You were right, it was on the 24th April and he is 30 this year! We hope the challenge is going well if you have decided to complete it.

Please can we take this moment to reiterate that although there are lots of activities given each day, as well as Education City and our continued home learning grid, the expectation is not for every single task to be completed and handed in. We are providing the work, and should it fit in with your home/working life, that’s a bonus. However, it is up to you what you believe is manageable for your situation. We are all new to this and you should do what works for you.

The main thing we would love to see completed each day is the establishment of a routine, and to ensure everyone in your household is safe, happy and well. If that happens, the learning will naturally happen from there anyway. Thank you all for your continued efforts, we really do appreciate how difficult this situation could be.

Good morning boys and girls! Well, it is now May! Can anyone remember how to say “the first” in French? Let’s see who remembers and can tell us!

Today is Friday, so that means you have to make sure you get some free time today!  We have a special job for you today. Your special job is to make sure all of the adults at home have some free time to themselves today, because they have been working just as hard as you this week! Especially helping us with our class chats on Wednesday! Can you do that!?

Today we have a little Friday challenge to keep you busy next week. It is about the Hubble space telescope and we hope you enjoy learning about it. It was Hubble’s birthday last week. Can anyone find out what age Hubble is? There are a few links for you to investigate to help you with your research.

How are you all Primary 3? Still keeping safe and well I hope! Happy Friday!

Every Friday, we will upload a challenge for our new technology topic (chosen by you). This will involve a tiny bit of research through reading or watching something and then an activity to go with the new information you have learned. Today’s challenge is a little introduction to technology.

We have seen lots of examples of you working through the activities on your learning grid which is great. Remember that Education City is also available to supplement Maths and Literacy too. Should you need a reminder of your password, please do not hesitate to message Mr Woodward and I. We will be happy to pass it on.

As you all are aware, we have our Rights Respecting Schools Article 24 as a focus for this week also. The theme with this is Health, water, food and the environment share using: #RRSA on Twitter, or share it on the RRSA Facebook community page.

West Lothian would also like to keep up to date with all of the amazing Health work we are doing, whether it be daily exercise, obstacle courses in the garden, baking and cooking or hand-washing to name a few. They would love to encourage you to share your work with them also following @WLHWBchamps on twitter and use the hashtag #WLHWBathome whenever you are doing anything HWB related.

Today’s Maths task is based on different number systems, focusing on the Roman number system. The Roman number system is slightly different to ours in that they used capital letters to represent their numbers. The letters are  I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Writing: Our topic this term is technology. Can you write a short story about what it might be like to be a robot being switched on for the first time? (think C3PO in The Phantom Menace). What would you see, who would you see, what would you feel and think? What would you do in your first day as a robot? What type of robot are you, could you describe yourself? How would you describe the world around you?

During Number Talks and numeracy we have started to look at multiplying with carrying and so here is a short video explaining carrying with a simple sum. It is the first time we’ve tried to record like this so hopefully it’ll work!

Each week we are going to make a Rights Respecting Schools Article focus for you to ponder or do an activity about. Anything you do, please keep or send on, because as you all know, we are going for our reaccreditation of our Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. You can also post your work with the hashtag #RRSA on Twitter, or share it on the RRSA facebook community page.

Primary 3, Monday 20.4.20

Good Morning Primary 3. Welcome back and we hope you have been having a restful couple of weeks on your Easter break. I’m wondering how many of you still have any of your chocolate eggs left!?

As much as we would love to be welcoming you back in person, we will continue to use our online classroom (the Blog and Teams) until we are told we can return to school, so it is going to be an interesting term with the topic you have chosen, “Technology in; sports, space, transport, programming and robotics.”

Reminder:

Primary 3, the majority of your work for the next 6 weeks or so will be in the form of another grid which we have attached at the end of this post. Please work through this at your own pace and preference. We may highlight and refer to some parts of this week to week that we think would be good for you to complete. Again, we will not be expecting all of your completed work to be sent to us, however if you wish to share what you have done with the rest of the class and ourselves, we are more than happy to receive copies or photos or even just a little blurb about how you are getting on. We will continue to add daily activities too, such as Maths, Reading, Spelling, Number Talks and Word Boost.

We will continue to dabble with ‘Teams’, so if you have access or have been using this before the holidays, keep your eyes peeled for new assignments, quizzes and resources on there. The main work and resources needed, however, will be duplicated on the Blog for those who do not have access to Teams.

Your first task for today to ease us back in nicely is a quick check-in. We are going to be looking at ICT and music through the use of Bandlab this term. It gives you the opportunity to create songs in a similar way to garageband which some of you may be familiar with.

Reading Books:

Group 6 (Mr Woodward’s class) – The Frog Prince

Group 7 (Miss Smith’s Blue Group) – Attack of the Buzzles

Group 8 (Mr Woodward’s class) – Attack of the Centipede

Group 11 (Mr Woodward’s Class and Miss Smiths Yellow Group)– Clever Monkey

Before you read your books – look at the front cover of your books and write at least 5 sentences predicting what will happen in your books. There should be a beginning, a problem, how the problem is fixed, and an ending. Think about characters and setting for your beginning and use the cover and the title to try and figure out what the problem in the story might be?

Click on log in and enter the email address and password.

Once logged in click on the red button in the top right corner that says +create.

It will give you a few options, click on the option that says ‘browse loops’.

Then choose a type of music and it will give you a variety of loop tracks to add to your song.

Click and drag the tracks into your song. When you want to add new tracks add them underneath tracks you already have.

Have a play around with different tracks/ genres and instruments.

Change the name of the track by clicking on ‘new project’ at the top of the page and give your song a name so you can remember it.

When you are done, click save and it will save your work.

Next time you log in click on the profile button (it looks like the shadow of a head in the top right corner) and you can find your project to keep working.

Remember that this profile is for everyone to use so please make sure you only create 1 song at a time and only save songs you are happy with.

Oui, Vendredi vingt-sept Mars.

So, today is Friday and marks one week of you all learning from home. We are so impressed with how well people have been engaging with the lessons and even with how inventive you have been with your own learning ideas. We want to thank you all, parents and P3 for your hard work this week. Remember, because today is Friday, you have a half day usually and have earned 30 minutes of Free Time Friday where you choose what you wish to do.

Today, we want you to focus on checking in with all the members of your family. Ask them how they are, discuss how you are feeling. Take some time out to reflect on the week that has passed.

Something to think about for next week is the RSPB page. using the hashtag 

Take photos and post the pictures of the birds you spot in your garden. You could even follow one of their handy guides on their website to make a bird feeder or bird house:

Just a little reminder:

A few of you have messaged saying you have had trouble with the sheets and resources we have been uploading. We have been instructed to save the resources as a picture or a screenshot the allow every person access to their learning. It means no-matter what software you have on your device and no-matter what device you are using, you can see the image of the learning task and therefore can complete it in your jotter or on paper.

If you would rather complete it on the physical sheet, try saving it and printing it off to make a physical worksheet, then you can write straight onto it.

We do not expect absolutely everything to be saved and sent to us, however if you wish to send things for clarification, marking or just because you want to share it with us, we are more than happy to receive your work. We love to see how you’re doing and what you have all been learning.

Today,  Hobbycraft’s daily arts and crafts is pom poms! Log in to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to join them live at 11am.

To find out more, follow the link below. They use their own pom pom makers, however, two circles of cardboard from a cereal packet works the same way! Perhaps you can make a colourful Easter garland with left over wool you may have lying around?

Kids Craft Club – Thursday

Here is the answer to yesterday’s problem solving task also. I will upload this to the files in teams to access later if you didn’t have the chance to try it yesterday.

Today, we have a little bit of multiplication for Numeracy. It is using vertical (chimney) sums which we began just before we left school. If there are any problems with this or how to do it, please let us know and we can talk you through the process again as a reminder.

Remember all of these activities are a supplement to your paper pack. Let us know how you are getting on with things or if we can help you out in any way. It has been fantastic being able to chat with you over the last few days. It has made missing being at school more bearable, especially seeing examples of what you have all been doing!

I saw a little challenge to brighten up people’s day, rainbows have been put up in people’s windows. Have any of you done this yet? It would be great to see them here on the blog or in our team space to brighten up our day! You know how we all love the colours of the rainbow!

Your reading task for today is to use the poem you looked at yesterday and try to write a descriptive paragraph putting yourself into the poem. Imagine that you are experiencing what is happening in the poem, how would you feel, what would you see, what smells would there be, would there be food and what would it taste like and what could you hear? Write it as a story and not as a poem, your paragraph does not have to rhyme.

Good morning Primary 3 and your families.

We hope you are all well! Yesterday was a success in terms of learning for lots of you. We loved seeing what you have all been up to! We had photos uploaded of Science experiments, the work you did on assignments in your jotters and things you have been doing outside. Keep these coming as it makes our day!

Today, below, you will see a problem solving question based on time. We will post the answers later on tonight if you want to try it. If you feel like it, work in your share-it jotters, answer in the comments below, or in the posts section of teams and we will see if you got it right later on.

Special Days Poems Rhyming Task:

Look at the Chinese New Year poem. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

e.g. The first verse has ‘old’ and ‘gold’. Other rhyming words could be cold and bold.

Try to write at least 2 sentences that end with your own rhyming words, e.g.:

It was during the winter and I was cold.

I went outside because I was feeling bold.

Minibeasts Poems Rhyming Task:

Read the Water Boatman poem. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with at least 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Try to write at least 2 sentences that end with your own rhyming words. If you can try to make your sentences about Mini Beasts.

Castle Poems Rhyming Task:

Have a look at Time Slip. In every verse (the groups of 4 lines) there are rhyming words. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Try to write at least 1 new verse of your own using your new rhyming words. Try and make them link to the poem if you can.

Pirate Poems Rhyming Task:

In I Wish I Was a Pirate there are rhyming couples throughout the verses. Can you write down what these rhyming words are and try to come up with at least 2 more rhyming words for each verse?

Primary 3 Tuesday 24.3.20

Thank you so much to everyone who was working from home yesterday and was able to share some of the things they have been doing and learning about. Mr Woodward and I loved reading your comments. Hopefully today we will have less teething issues with our new way of learning, but it is quite exciting to see all of the new skills we are all learning in the process!

The word boost stories will be uploaded later today for you in the files section of teams. Turn on your speakers and enjoy a little story read by either myself of Mr Woodward.

Each day at 11am, Hobbycraft are doing a Kid’s Craft Club. Today’s craft club is colouring. They have colouring pages free to download, print and colour in. Take time out to do some mindful colouring and let us see the results if you choose to do this.

Education City had some problems yesterday too, with so many people trying to access it. Hopefully today will be better and perhaps you can try some of the multiplication and division games. Primary 3 7.2.20

We are part way there with our life size knights, they are taking slightly longer than we thought! We will update with pictures once they are completed and guarding our classrooms.

We tested our Bows as well and had great fun practising our battle faces!

Pom poms were used instead of arrows for safety, and we tested the distances travelled using a variety of forces from a light force to the strongest force we could manage.

Here we are using the metre sticks to measure the distance travelled.

We also had a visitor this week from Lynne at EOS (Eczema Outreach Support) who came to raise our awareness of the condition and what it meant for sufferers. She assured us eczema cannot be caught, and allowed us to use a moisture monitor to understand the water content of our skin. She explained that people with eczema have  less water in their skin and therefore have very dry, sore skin.

It was very interesting and the whole visit was interactive. We enjoyed learning about it.

We also ended our germ experiment with the slices of bread this week. It took 4 weeks to get to this stage but very clearly shows that it is important to wash our hands. Bag one shows a piece of bread untouched by hands, and the slice of bread in bag 2 was passed around the whole class to touch. We were disgusted with the results and are aware of what this means for us, and the importance of washing our hands before we eat:

Primary 3 24.1.20

This has been a busy week for us yet again topic wise. We have learned how to become a knight in the Medieval Times and learned that the process started at age seven! Our ages! We couldn’t believe how many chores and responsibilities they had at our age in order to prove themselves before becoming a squire, then eventually a knight.

We began making our own life-size pictures of knights and look forward to finishing them off to provide guards for our castle and classrooms.

 

 

In Science, we were introduced to the term ‘forces’ and were investigating types of forces, whether it be push, pull, twist or bend. We will investigate the forces involved with magnets next week.

We had our poetry competitions and MR Woodward and myself were blown away by the calibre of recitals this year for P3. The confidence shone from the children and every last child made an attempt to learn their poem. Thank you for helping your child learn these as it is an important part of the Scottish Curriculum. We have our annual poetry competition today as well so it is exciting times!

Child Smile were in this week checking our teeth and explaining to us the effects of sugar on our teeth in every day foods we may eat.

Miss Smith was shocked to learn that one packet of Drumstick Squishes had the equivalent of 33 sugar cubes in them! She’s put off for life!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

The children performed wonderfully in the Nativity this week. We felt so proud of them and all of their hard work. We hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed doing it. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support in this year so far. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the Nativity too.

We will be updating the blog to show you the children’s stop start animations of the Christmas story from earlier this week. It was our first attempt using this software and we are proud of the results. We will hopefully be able to put our new skills to practice in the new year!

We also had some fun creating a music video to say Merry Christmas to everyone, so keep your eyes peeled for this too.

We would also like to wish Jody lots of luck at his new school. We will all miss you, but we are certain you will shine. They are very lucky to be gaining you.

We will finish this term again by wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All the very best for 2020 and we look forward to seeing everybody in a couple of weeks on Tuesday 7th January fresh and ready for a full term of learning and fun. Stay Safe and have fun!

A Christmas Update in P3 16.12.19

Primary 3 have been experimenting with our ICT Skills, using the I-pads and Laptops in our learning.

We had our first shot of stop motion animation and we are really proud of our attempts at telling the Christmas story. Watch out for the final film once we have put them all together.

We have also been putting our technology skills to use, measuring, cutting and assembling 3D paper pictures. We hope you like our windows! We were so impressed with them.


 

Primary 3 11.10.19

It was so lovely seeing the parents and carers of Primary 3 over the last two nights at Parents’ night. It was great to be able to show the progress the children have made already in this short space of time, and to have time to chat with you all.

We can’t believe it is the end of the first term already. We have completed so many challenges, experiments and pieces of work relating to our Weather topic and it is now time for us to say goodbye to SummerWinter. We had a lovely party and celebration for all of our hard work and it was well deserved! We will be sad to see her go.

This week, we completed our learning about cloud types. Ask us about some of the types of clouds we know about.

We have been learning the language of persuasion and have written our first piece of persuasive writing in the form of a letter. This will be our Writing focus until Christmas.

We are looking forward to starting a new topic, looking at our community and how there are groups and places to help people who are in need of help.

We Will continue talking about how we feel using our Blob Tree and will be creating our very own ‘Blob’ to position and demonstrate this.

Two of our pupils are leaving this week and going to a new school. We will miss you both and wish you all the best in your new adventures. Don’t forget us!

Please accept our apologies for homework due date being in the holidays. This was an oversight on my part.  It is fine to hand it in the first day back from holidays.

Homework will then resume as usual the following week.
