Hello everybody,

We hope you are well and are enjoying the last week of school before the summer holidays. Are you having fun with the virtual Disney trip activities on this week’s grids? What is your favourite activity that you have done so far?

Our focus for today’s blog is our Rights Respecting Schools Award. We are exploring Article 30. This article is all about minority or indigenous groups, culture, language and religion. In other words, every child has the right to learn and use the language, customs and religion of their family no matter where they live. Have a little look at the activities below and you could try to complete one of them over the next few days.

Can you find out how to say ‘Hello, how are you?’ in 3 different languages.
Do you know any traditional dances? Research these safely online with an adult and practise the steps.
Find 10 characters from your favourite books. Do they come from a range of cultures or are they all just like you?
Culture means traditions that groups follow like food, dances, song and clothes. Draw or write about what is important in your culture. Then think of someone who comes from a different culture and share safely with them what is important about culture for each of you.
Watch ‘If the World were a Village of 100 People’ to find out about people around the world.
Keep a food and drink diary for the week. What cultures do your food and drink come from? Which are your favourites?

Good morning Primary 1s!

How are you today? We hope you have managed to do some learning, playing and relaxing this week. We have loved looking at your pictures from your sports days. Well done to you all! Your house teams will be so proud.

Since we have been finding lots of fun things to do at home over the past few months we thought it would be nice to read ‘Winnie and Wilbur Stay at Home’ on the Oxford Owl website. You can read this book with an adult and try to read the words that you can on your own. Once you have read the book you can have a discussion about it with an adult. You can think about all the fun things that you have decided to do at home and see if they are the same as Winnie and Wilbur. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope you do too.

We are almost at the end of the term already, we can’t quite believe it. We just want to remind you that you have been doing a wonderful job over the past 12 weeks. All of us Primary 1 teachers are so proud and you always bring a smile to our faces. We have two more weeks to go!

Happy Friday everyone!

How are you all? We hope you have had a lovely week and that you have had time to do learning, playing and relaxing. We have had a lovely week looking at all your posts on your learning journals, it brings a smile to our faces! Thank you for all your hard work primary 1s.

We have seen lots of kindness over the past few months, including kind acts from you! We thought we could challenge ourselves to do another act of kindness today.

You could do something to help around the house, tell a joke, make something for a friend or family member or teach someone something new.

We have joined in on this challenge too! Miss Christy baked cookies and made face masks for her neighbours to help them feel safe going out. Miss Daun wrote a letter to her Auntie last week who lives alone. Her Auntie phoned her back to say it made her feel really happy. Miss Cunningham arranged flowers to be delivered to some of her friends’ houses. They loved them! It is really nice to do something kind for someone because it makes you and them feel happy.

We hope you enjoy doing an extra kind thing for someone this weekend.

Hello boys and girls!

We hope you are all well and are staying safe. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve been putting in at home, all the primary 1 teachers are so proud of you!

We are doing so well with our farming topic so far. Did you know a farmer puts a scarecrow in a field after he has planted seeds to frighten birds away? Why do you think a farmer doesn’t want birds in his fields? Have you ever seen a real scarecrow?

Miss Christy saw a scarecrow while she was on a cycle. Can you spot the scarecrow in the picture?

For our blog task today we would like you to make your own scarecrow out of materials you have in the house.

Here is one I made over the weekend:

I used the inside of a toilet roll, paper, ribbon, pens, glue and scissors. You might have a different idea and different materials to use at home which is great! If you can you might want to search the internet for some ideas with an adult. You could use lollipop sticks, paint, paper plates or cloth. It is completely up to you! You can choose how you make your own scarecrow.

If you want to do this task we hope you have fun with it!

We hope you are having a wonderful week and are managing to do your learning and also have time to relax.

Since a lot of us are enjoying lovely local walks outside, we thought we would create a scavenger hunt for you to do on one of your walks. Your task is to try and find as many items as you can on the list and then answer the questions. I managed to find 8 from the list on my walk yesterday. It is lots of fun!

Good morning everyone!

We hope you enjoyed your weekend and are excited about the week ahead. All 3 primary 1 teachers enjoyed their weekends. Miss Cunningham and Miss Christy were busy in the kitchen. Miss Christy made delicious cookies and Miss Cunningham made sweet potato and carrot and coconut soup. Miss Daun went on a beautiful walk along the canal.

Happy Mercredi everyone!

We hope you are well and are enjoying the activities on the grids that were given out yesterday. We can’t wait to see what you share with us on your learning journals. Remember do what you can and also fit in time for play, relaxing and helping out around the house.

The Rights Respecting School article for this week is focusing on Article 28 – the right to education. Every child has the right to an education. Primary education must be free and different forms of secondary education must be available to every child. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Richer countries must help poorer countries achieve this.

Give yourself one minute to think of as many reasons as you can why education is important for children and young people. You can think about how it helps you! What does it help you with? What might it mean for your future?

Here are some activities you can try:

Imagine you have been asked to create your ideal lesson timetable for a day or a week at home or in school. Plan it out and decide what you would include and what you would leave out. Make sure it will provide children with a really good quality education!
What do you think makes a good teacher? This video might give you some ideas! Draw an outline of your ideal teacher and surround it with words that describe what that teacher is like.
Teachers and learners go together! So now think about what makes a good learner? Imagine you are talking to a younger brother, sister or friend who is about to start school. Describe to them how to be a really good learner! Invent a cartoon character to represent this good learner.

I like the idea of drawing and writing down what makes a good teacher and a good learner. If you have time to do this activity we would love to see your ideas on your learning journals.

Welcome back Primary 1s!

We hope you had a lovely long weekend. The sun has certainly been out. What did you get up to? It was my birthday yesterday so I went on a lovely evening walk and saw a squirrel run across the path in front of me. It was very cute! Miss Christy went on her daily walks and she has done lots of sewing projects too. She sewed different coloured material together to create baskets to help organise her baking cupboard. Miss Daun also went on local walks, played board games and did some yoga. Have you tried any yoga at home yet?

Can you believe it is May already? You are all doing so well with your learning from home. We have an exciting week ahead of us. I have attached the grids and resources for this week. We hope you enjoy doing the tasks if you are able to and we can’t wait to hear how you get on.

Good morning Primary 1,

If you had time to do the Enormous Turnip drama yesterday we hope you enjoyed it! It is a great way to demonstrate and practise your drama skills.

What signs of spring have you been noticing? It is amazing to see the changes around us as we move from winter to spring. Do you have a favourite season and if so why is it your favourite? My favourite season is spring because the weather turns warmer and beautiful flowers bloom.

Good morning everyone!

It is the first of April today! Hope you are paying close attention to any possible tricks. Oh but also remember they stop after midday.

Are you excited for Easter?

We thought as a nice activity you could create an Easter card. Have a think about all the things that remind you of Easter: eggs, chicks, chocolate, rabbits, baskets or flowers. If you have access to the internet maybe an adult could help you search for some ideas.

Afterwards, you can choose your favourite idea and then use this to decorate a card! This is a great chance to get creative. We would love to see pictures of your cards on your learning journals.

Happy Friday everyone!

We hope you’ve had a great first week learning from home. Remember please only do what you can, we know it’s a stressful time for everyone just now.

Today you could do a piece of writing! Here is a suggested activity to do in your castle book:

If I was trapped in a giant’s castle and I had to trick the giant, I would…

Copy out this sentence and then continue the story. You can get creative! This sentence is inspired by the fairy tale, Jack and the Beanstalk. What would you do to trick the giant, remember you don’t want him to catch you? You are much smaller than him so maybe you could tickle his ear, so he starts laughing. This would give you a chance to escape! I am sure you can come up with lots of ways to trick the giant.

Things to remember when writing:
• Full stops
• Capital letters
• Finger spaces
• Sound out the words on your own
• As a challenge: use a connective, for example, and

Please don’t worry if your child doesn’t spell each word correctly, they should write down the sounds they hear. You can say the word slowly to help them hear the sounds.

Once you are finished, we would love to see a picture of your writing posted on your online learning journal.

Good morning, today is Mardi!

Hope everyone is well and that you had a great day yesterday. We are still missing you all very much. Here are some suggested activities that you can do:

For reading today you could look at the common words: ‘old’, ‘do’ and ‘going’. Why might these words be a bit more tricky? Do they sound out? With an adult, you could play corners. Put a word in each corner of a room and when the adult shouts out a word you should run to the corner that has that word in it.

For maths, have a look at halves and discuss what equal means. We haven’t covered any fractions yet so this might take some time to understand. You can split objects into equal parts between two plates. For example, can you split 8 lego pieces equally between two plates?

For topic, you can design and build your own beanstalk, like the one from the fairytale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Try be creative as you can! You could use lego or recycled materials.

Remember you can keep us updated with your learning through your online learning journals. We have seen that some of you posted on it yesterday, the work you are doing is fantastic!
