Ripples of kindness

When we created our Class Charter at the start of the year, the most important quality the children wanted to see in their classmates and staff, was kindness. With this in mind, we set out to create a ‘Ripples of Kindness’ display in our school foyer so that others could be made aware of the importance of small acts of kindness too.

We used oil pastels to create the ‘ripple lines’ that would be seen if a pebble was thrown in water. Then, we experimented with water colour paints, using the ‘wet on wet’ technique. It was so relaxing, watching the colours spread and mix, as we placed our wet brushes on the card.

Time spent playing around with the paints, mixing colours and adding more or less water to our card, definitely paid off! The finished results are beautiful! Well done P4-5-6!

Here’s just one example created which shows bubbles spreading outwards – just like kind acts!

Now, we are thinking about the different ‘types’ of kind acts we can do and the positive ‘ripples’ they can send to others in school, at home and in our community.

Chuck Close Portraits

It’s taken us a while but sometimes you can’t rush a good job! The children have all created beautiful self portraits in the style of a famous artist that we found out about. They were shown his work and we talked about how we could recreate it. The children were given the choice of working with larger squares or smaller squares in true Chuck Close style. We talked about drawing 2D shapes within each small square or taking the opportunity to make each small picture more personal to them and some chose to do a mixture. We talked about the use of shading to make certain parts of their picture stand out and used black pen to make each portrait more visible than the shapes and squares. When the pictures were complete, we looked at the colours used and they picked backing colours to help display them to their best advantage! They will be displayed in our ICT Suite so please look out for them when you next visit.

Scott’s portrait really catches your eye! His small shapes fill his page and I like that he’s left some of the background white. This works particularly well on his face. He’s still used skin tones to create the colour of his face.

Innes chose a bright background and his small shapes work really well on this! I really like the way he’s captured his hair line…very effective! Best of all…Innes thinks it’s his best portrait!

Robbie worked tirelessly! He chose the bigger squares, but within each one, he drew something special to him. Robbie chose the backing colour green to compliment the colours in his picture and to represent his favourite team!

That’s the end of week 1 already! We had fun getting outdoors today to play some team games in the sunshine. We spent time exploring the various natural items in our school grounds and then used these to make some art work. Here is a small selection of some of the masterpieces created today!

Creative Class!

Primary 5/6 spent another lovely day being creative on Wednesday! We took a wander down to the beach in the sunshine in search of some interesting natural items to use back in the classroom. We had great fun “purlin in da ebb” to look for crabs, fish and other interesting living things.
