At the end of Term 2 we had a visit from Barnum at Shetland Arts who brought in real film equipment. We got the opportunity to learn how to use it and create our own short films! We had the best afternoon.
We write 3 times per week, and today we decided to use Ruby to help us create an imaginative story. While she played “The Lost City” on the double bass, we created imaginative stories about of own Lost Cities.
The National improvement for writing project, aims to have pupils write for short amounts of time (15 mins) focussing on personal targets to achieve. Pupils are then given a further 5 minutes to edit and check their work. This is working great in P5/6 where we’re seeing some superb improvements in writing.
P5/6 have worked really hard this term learning about water and how it can change states. We recently learned about salt and how it changes the freezing point of water – so using this knowledge we created our very own ice creams – in only 15 minutes!
In P5/6 this term we are looking at science and how water and other liquids have different states and how they can mix and change states. We learned about density this week, and why things float or sink. we measured the density of 4 different liquids: honey, oil, salt water and fresh water, and with our findings we could then create a layered liquid cake showing the different densities of the liquids.
P5/6 have been taking part in the Writing Project (A national project aimed to develop writing skills). Our first “aim” was to ensure 70% of learners in the class were writing using correct punctuation. The class could look at our run chart each week to see how well they had done, and if 100% reached their target they receive a golden ticket.
We introduced a new aim (looking at use of conjunctions) fairly recently. The class all work so hard during our writing sessions, and have managed to get 5 golden tickets – meaning it was a celebratory hot chocolate for their efforts!
In term 2 we will continue, and hope to introduce more aims, as well as get 5 more golden tickets which will win a class prize again!
That’s been another fast year! We’ve had a lovely last day with many highlights including a wonderful musical concert from some of our instrumentalists. Have a restful and fun filled summer everybody and make good use of those gifts!
This morning the whole school had some fun outdoors, watching the staff and P7s playing “Sheet Volleyball” mixed with “Floor is Lava”. Of course, some fancy dress for the staff was a requirement.
It was a close match with each member eliminated if they were the last person off the floor each time the whistle was blown.
Although the P7s lost more of their team mates, they won on the points earned whenever the ball was tossed over and not caught by the staff team on their sheet. Perhaps next year the staff will win…!
Well done to all! What a brilliant way to end the school year.
