Our day today started with Mrs Douglas’ symmetry lesson. The class all concentrated so well on their shapes and patterns. Then it was out into the fresh air to tidy up to the Croft House doing our Redd Up. See the photo of our most unusual find! Then it was reading time followed by a lesson on alliteration. The children made up sentences about their classmates using alliteration and interesting verbs, adjectives and adverbs. After lunch, we recapped on Health & Wellbeing work from last week, relating to naming external body parts. Mrs Douglas made up a fun game that had everybody answering questions and using the correct names. It was a fun and relaxed way to learn.

Blackout!

Today Mrs Douglas did a science experiment with the class to find out which material would work best to black out our windows during an air raid in World War 2.

We had 4 materials to choose from. We made a hypothesis, writing down which materials would be most effective or which materials would be least effective.

Then we attached the materials to the windows and went outside to test them. From inside the classroom , Mrs Henderson shone a torch behind each material and we had to see if any light could be seen on the other side of the window.

Then we had to attach our different materials to the windows.

We didn’t think this would block out the light.

We were surprised that the white paper blocked out the torch light.

The red cellophane was the least effective and we were surprised to find that the light was blocked by the white paper!

We are delighted to welcome Mrs Douglas into our class this term. She will be with us for 7 weeks as part of her teacher training and we are looking forward to getting to know her.

Last Day Of Term

What a busy two weeks we’ve had … but it’s been great! The planned activities have really helped the children settle and reconnect. Today, we finally were able to present our learning about life cycles. We started this piece of work during our biodiversity topic and were due to share our work when we started term 3. Sadly, this had to wait! The children worked in groups or individually, to research the life cycle of a living thing. They then had to display this information in an eye catching way. They worked very hard on this project, with great team work and cooperation. Although it was started a long time ago, I know they’d be keen for you to see their work! Happy Easter and we look forward to seeing you all again in the new term!

The Fairy Wasp’s life cycle only lasts for a few days! Eveline shared so much information about this tiny insect.

She did a great job sharing her findings!

Fiona and Conor’s oak tree display was very eye catching and made good use of resources from outside too!

They told us that a fully grown oak tree can be 45m tall and as wide too!

This display was about the panda. It was simple but very effective!

Kayla and Roma had some difficult words to read and explain about the early stages of life for the panda. Well done!

This bright display was all about the flamingo.

Isla and Kathryn worked well as a team. Did you know a baby flamingo’s feathers are grey at the start of life?

Esther and Aiden worked on the life cycle of a cheetah. We heard how hard life can be for an adult cheetah so its life span is usually quite short.

Esther presented this on her own today and coped brilliantly.

Hannah and George found out about the pine tree. There are 126 species of pine tree with more being discovered all the time.

Ethan’s was about the salmon. He wrote about 6 different stages in the cycle!

Leighton, Anders and Magnus found out about the life cycle of an eel. We realised there were a lot of similarities to the life cycle of a salmon.

Here they are presenting to the class. We liked how they made it look like the eel was emerging from the stones!

This display is about the life of an alligator. Did you know a baby alligator has a special egg tooth to help it escape from inside the egg?

This group did well to present their findings first!

Freya and Fearne confidently told us about their seahorse findings.

A newborn seahorse can be as small as 2mm in size! Ava helped this group when she was here too.

Having fun together

Over the past week we have been sharing thoughts on how to stay positive and how we can help other people feel good about themselves. On Monday, everyone decided on some positive words to paint on to a rock and chose a design to accompany it. These will be displayed outside the school next term for all to enjoy.

We have also been finding out even more interesting facts about Space and enjoyed looking at some of the PowerPoints that were created during Online Learning.

On Tuesday we visited the frog pond in the nature garden. It was good fun trying to find the frogs hiding in the heather. They were very camouflaged!

On Wednesday, we had lots of fun with our literacy Escape Room challenge. It was very active! Each team raced to find clues hidden outside and then brought them back indoors to solve as a team. Everyone did really well to take turns and involve every team member in the game.

Just before the next rain shower came, we squeezed in an Easter egg hunt and had fun re-hiding our eggs for someone else to find!

Phew! What a busy time and still two more days to go! Well done everyone!

Anders enjoyed creating his own spacesuit whilst Conor found out if your eyes really do change shape when you go into Space!

Kathryn and Liam worked well together to find out facts on the Solar System.

First Week Back – Done!

For the final two days of the first week back, we focused on the 5 Ways to Wellbeing to structure our days. These were…Connect, Be Active, Keep Learning, Take Notice and Give. The link is below for you to watch at home.This clip is for children … and adults too!

All our class activities fitted into one or more of these areas. At the end of the week, the children wrote in their Think Books to say which activities they enjoyed on returning to school. “Connect” and “Keep Active” were definitely the firm favourites!

5 Ways to Wellbeing

Working with a friend on our Colour Brain game.

We learned about the art technique called sgraffito. We used it to help us create our Easter cards.

We drew our designs in pale colours using oil pastels.

We then had to be brave and colour all over it with a much darker colour. We drew our Easter pictures by scratching off the top layer to reveal the bright colours below.

We had a lovely walk around the Boddam loop on Thursday. We stopped to “Take Notice” of the wildlife around us, sights and sounds! We were lucky to see six swans!

Friday morning…time to learn a new team game fitting into our “Be Active” and “Connect” wellbeing tasks. It was called “Capture the Flag” and was enjoyed by all!

Quite a few of the Bibs ended up in jail! The rest of the team had to work hard to get past the Non Bibs to free them!

Friday afternoon was spent on the “Give” way to wellbeing. We all wrote down words to say what we admire about our classmates. These were turned into Word Clouds using the laptops.

The children will be able to see what was written about them when they arrive at school on Monday and will get a copy to take home.

After three days of careful painting, we finally finished our collaborative mystery picture! It was exciting to piece together each part of the puzzle and discover what we had made!

Creative Class!

Primary 5/6 spent another lovely day being creative on Wednesday! We took a wander down to the beach in the sunshine in search of some interesting natural items to use back in the classroom. We had great fun “purlin in da ebb” to look for crabs, fish and other interesting living things.

Welcome back!

We’re only a couple of days in and already we have been busy reconnecting with each other through various games and crafts. This week we started a collaborative painting project. Each person has a grid to paint and when all the grids come together it will reveal a mystery picture! Watch this space to find out what it is!

We have also enjoyed making some new bookmarks in preparation for getting back into our daily reading in class. There were even families of bookmarks made…of all sizes!

During our online learning, we began to look at stars and constellations as part of our Space topic. We had fun today finding out about the Zodiac sign our birthdays fall under and what that constellation looks like. Can you guess what they are?
