Another snow day

Well good morning everyone.  It would seem we have more snow and so here are some things to keep you busy today.  Remember to have some time outside in the snow if you have some as fresh air and exercise are important too.

Language

P1 – phonics – practise all sounds covered so far.  Practise writing these letters too.

P2 – common words – look at the attached word lists, using a dice, roll the dice and see if you can read the word, then get someone to test you on spelling it.  There are a lot of words and sheets to choose from.

Rhyming – complete the rhyming worksheet.  If you can think of anymore please add them to the  group.  Then make up a short story using two of the animals on the sheet and have some silly rhyming sentences in it.

Reading – read your reading book if you have it at home.  If not, read another book, your library book etc and then you can tell me about it when you get back to school.  Let me know what you thought of it and what you liked about it or didn’t like.

Primary 1 maths – Have a look at sumdog and complete the challenges that have been set there for you.

Topic – Complete the weather forecast for today on the sheet, looking and deciding on what it is like at the different stages of the day.  If you want you can challenge yourself by finding out about the wind direction and the temperature at each stage too.  More challenge is to see what the wind speed is too.  Do these change at the different parts of the day?  Sheet attached to complete and just write in the additional information.

Art – Draw a picture of what you can see today.  You can also draw a Spring picture too.  Although it doesn’t feel like Spring at the moment, we are now in that season!

Health and Wellbeing – if there is snow at your house and you can go outside and play in it then please do so.  This is as good as anything.  If you don’t want to play in the snow, how about going for a walk with someone.  Look for unusual patterns in the snow or there is any ice around?  Does it have a pattern?  Find out how deep the snow is (within reason and safely).  Does it just cover your feet?  Is it deeper and go halfway up your legs?  Are you knee deep?  Build a snow sculpture if you can.

Please do also take care and I look forward to seeing you all again soon and hearing about your day.

Snow day

Here are some activities to do while there is a snow day.  Don’t spend all day on it though, enjoy the snow too if you can as we don’t get too many days like these anymore!

Practise singing the Up Helly Aa song.  Here is a link and you only need to sing up to the first minute.

Reading – read your reading book if you have it at home.  If not, read another book instead.

Maths

P2 – Mrs Finch would like you to:

  1. Snowy number stories:  18 snowflakes fell on Monday, 10 on Tuesday and 7 on Wednesday. How many fell altogether?  Now make up your own snow number story and draw a picture to go with it.
  2. Have a go at making Scottish shortbread with an adult  by following the recipe  attached.

P1 –

  1. Go outside and roll a large snowball to make the body of a snowman.  Don’t add a head, go and stand behind the body to make the head.  You can then change what the head looks like, it may have different hats, wigs etc if you have any.  Take photos and send back to me on the email address provided in the curriculum overview.
  2. Create a snow maze with different ways of travel.  Some paths that end up with no way out.
  3. Make a snow pet – you decide what type of pet the snowman would like and make it.
  4. I shall put some activities up on Sumdog too.  Your username and password are attached to the front of your diaries, when they ask for the school just put Dunrossness

Topic – since we are doing weather for our topic record the weather using the attached sheet.  Think back to what the weather was yesterday.  If you have a thermometer outside at home, you can also write down the temperature for each part of the day.

Most of all, have fun in the snow if you can and I look forward to hearing all about it when I see you again.

Challenge can be hard but rewarding

This term we are going to learn about challenging ourselves, how we can overcome challenge and how it will make us feel when we do.  We started with a challenge yesterday. We had to make a tower using playing cards, it was fine if it was a small tower but a lot more challenging if we were to make it bigger!  We decided that it’s good to work as a team.  We have decided that it’s good to give ourselves some challenges, keep trying them until we can do them and then set some more.
