Gruffalo foraging and cooking

We had a week where we read about The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.  We read The Gruffalo’s Child too.  We also heard them in Shetland Dialect.  That was very interesting as there were some words we had never heard before!

After that we went out foraging for ingredients to make some Gruffalo recipes.  Here are photos of us doing that.  We had great fun and used great language and role play used in our cooking and searching.

The Three Little Pigs

Some of us tried to make a house of straw for the three little pigs.

There were a lot of helping in different ways and teamwork was key.

Then we decided the wolf might be hungry and need something to eat, hopefully not one of the three little pigs!

So a group set to to make delicious soup that the wolf would like.  With a little bit of this and a little bit of that, the soup was made and the trap was set!

Other people in the class set to building different types of houses for the three little pigs.  These were made of branches or pallets of wood.

They thought if there were leaves on the branches, the wolf might think it was a home!

The wolf fell for the trap, climbed down the chimney and ended up in the pot so we were able to make wolf soup!  It was delicious!

Here are some architects, planning their next houses to build.  I think they decided on houses made of tyres!

Scholland Farm Soup

We made soup using the vegetables from Scholland Farm.  First we washed the vegetables ready for peeling.

Then we carefully peeled the carrots and parsnip. We peeled away from us to help keep our hands safe from harm and we did it carefully.

We added the onion to our pan. Mrs Inkster chopped that for us and it made her eyes water!

Then we chopped some carrots and parsnip.

Some of us watched while others prepared the vegetables.

Then we chopped and added some neep .

Next it was the broccoli and cauliflower.

Then we put the soup on to cook.  We decided to have vegetable soup and lentil soup using the vegetables too.

While it was cooking we were being good listeners and following instructions for our activity.

We had a break and tried some raw carrot and raw neep.  Some of us had never tasted raw neep before and it was delicious!

Once the soup was cooked we tried the lentil soup first.  We thought that was delicious.

Then we tried the vegetable soup. Some of us didn’t like it but some of us like it so much we had another bowl!

It’s been a busy morning in our class but we really enjoyed using the vegetables that we got from the farm and we all agree that it tastes great when we know and have seen where the produce comes from.

Our Senses – Touch

We have been learning about the 5 senses.  With me, they have been looking at our sense of touch.   We measured how far our skin would stretch if you laid it out flat.  The children were fascinated to see how big an area it would cover!  We have been naming parts of our hands and skin and looking closely using magnifying glasses.  We have talked about the “receptors ” under our skin that send messages to our brains to help us make sense of what we are touching.  Very carefully, we tried using paper clips to help us feel which parts of our bodies were more sensitive to touch.  We have tried using just our sense of touch to name hidden objects.

Outdoor Education Day – 18th May

Thanks to the glorious Shetland weather, we were able to do all our planned activities today!  We started off at the Boddam play park to do an experiment on forces.  Then, in groups, we had to show forces at work using the play equipment.  After some time inside looking at Electricity with Mr Rose, it was back outside to do a spot of reading before we joined the rest of the school on our whole school walk.  A full day of learning and fresh air!

Forces – Magnetism

We enjoyed another visit from Mr Rose on Thursday 11th May.  He spoke to us all about magnets and magnetism and the “invisible” force they use to attract certain types of metals.  We learned the word, “repel” and used the magnets to test out how this felt.  We had fun working with our partners and testing objects around the class.

Inara slowly moves her magnet closer until her paper clip is attracted to it.
We tested lots of objects around the classroom. We were surprised at some of the results we got.

Forces

Today, we were glad to see Mr Rose back in class to help us learn all about Forces.  We have been learning that forces are all around us, all the time.  We have been talking about gravity and the forces that we can apply to objects to make them move and change.  We are looking forward to planning, testing and writing up our own experiment soon.
