D Day Poppies

Remember how, at the old school, we sowed poppies to harvest the petals for the Remembrance Service in September 2014 in Colliston Park to mark the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1? Well today, they are starting to bloom again, just in time for the 75th anniversary of WW2 D Day. Soon, we will be sowing more seeds in our new school grounds and hopefully they will be blooming later this year.

Eco Schools 6th Green Flag Celebration Event

On Friday 17th May 2019, Dalbeattie Primary School held a special event to celebrate the renewal of its Eco Schools green flag- now the 6th awarded to Dalbeattie Primary. Because our feedback from Eco Schools had highlighted the good partnership work we had entered into with parent helpers, local organisations and businesses, it was decided that we would share our success with all who had been involved. One special invited guest was Finlay Carson MSP who had highlighted the school’s eco work at the Scottish Parliament. We are very grateful to Mrs Houston and the Hospitality Department at Dalbeattie High School who prepared and served some wonderful refreshments which included green flag topped cakes! Mrs Duncan and Mrs Howie are both very proud of the eco committee’s participation in the event and are also very grateful to Kate Howard, Musical Director who led contributions from the William Heughan Choir who performed two eco songs. This was in addition to the two songs which the whole school have been practising in recent weeks. Thank you too to all our invited guests for coming along to share in our celebration and to Mrs Murray for overseeing the invitations. Thank you also to Mr Parker who went to new heights to display all  6 of our flags and for suspending our paper mache Earth!

Cash For Kids High School’s Superheroes Fundraiser

On Thursday 16th May, Dalbeattie High School students, under the ‘wonderful’ leadership of Mrs Houston organised a ‘Superheroes Fundraiser’ in aid of Cash For Kids. The Primary children brought in money to buy cakes and to take part in a whole host of activities which included ‘Beat Banana Man Goalie’ and Superhero Photo-Booth. An exact total is to be confirmed but it believed that the amount raised was well over £200. Thank you Mrs Houston, aka ‘WonderWoman’ and your team of Superheroes! We would like to thank all our parents and children for supporting this very worthwhile charity.

Rota Kids

A new club has started up in Dalbeattie Primary School: Rota Kids Club  meets once a month on a Friday afternoon in Dalbeattie Primary School. Rota Kids is a junior, school based, organisation linked with Rotary International and its aim is to fundraise and provide service to the local and international community. Our club has been set up and will be overseen by Mr and Mrs Cathro although the running of the club will be very much under the control of the members themselves. Recently the club members have elected their office bearers: president; vice president; secretary and treasurer.

On Saturday 27th April some of the members helped to give information about the new club at the main Dalbeattie Rotary Coffee Morning. They also challenged some of the members of the public with some games to raise money.

Easter Church Service 2019

The school has just held its annual Easter Service in Dalbeattie and Kirkgunzeon Parish Church. After a welcome from Mrs Duncan, Primary 7 pupils re-told the Easter story followed by singing from the William Heughan Choir before the service was ended with some words and an Easter blessing from the minister Rev Fiona Wilson.

Fairtrade Snack

Thank you to everyone who supported our Fairtrade Snack in school today. So far we have raised £122 for the Fairtrade organisation. The success of the event was due greatly to the wonderful donations we had from Tescos, Co-op and Kinnairds supermarkets.

We were also pleased to welcome Mary van Zwanenberg from the Fairtrade Organsation to our assembly, later in the day. Mary reminded us all about the important message of trying to buy Fairtrade items as this gives the farmers a fairer deal.

S3 Producers Market

The High School’s S3 Producers Market was a great success and the Primary School was delighted to be involved in it too. We are very grateful to all the support for our hampers. We had such an array of wonderful donations for each of our class hampers. A super sum (TBC) was raised for school funds.  It was also great to see participation from some of our classes who had made items to sell at the market. Primary 4 made bird feeders, Primary 1 /2 re-wrapped shortbread in their own gift wrap design and Primary 3 /4 made Bunny Bag Treats. (Sorry no photos from the Bunny bag stall where items sold out so soon- However pictures are in a separate blog post.)  Well done to Mrs Houston and her team in Dalbeattie High School who made this event such a success. See DHS Facebook page for more pictures.

Janice Jamieson Memorial Foundation Assembly

On Friday 15th February we were joined at our assembly by Sandy Jamieson from the Janice Jamieson Memorial Foundation. Sandy provided us with an update on the work of the foundation and shared his experience of a recent trip that he had made to Malawi to experience first hand the work of the foundation. A cheque was presented to Sandy on behalf of the school with this years sponsor money for our young person Joshua whom we support through he foundation.
