Primary 1 29.8.18

Primary 1 are settling in well to school. They are becoming more familiar with school routines are are enjoying exploring our classrooms and playing with the resources.
In phonics the children have been learning the sounds a and t. We have learnt songs to help us remember each sound and are practising forming each letter correctly. Please continue to practise these sounds at home and encourage your child to identify words with each sound at the beginning. We will also be learning some common words later this week. More details will follow in the homework tasks next week.
In maths we are having a focus on number formations. We have taught correct formation of 0,1 and 2 so far this week. We are also looking at ordering numbers and counting out amounts up to 10.
P.E. is going to be on Mondays. For the first few weeks we will not be changing the children for these lessons to maximise the amount of time we can spend in the hall. We hope to begin changing for P.E. after the September break and will let you know on this blog if that changes.
Homework will be issued from next week. Homework will go out on Mondays, with children being given 2 weeks to complete the tasks. Reading books will be given out on Mondays but will be changed every week. Please ensure your child brings their reading book to school every day so that we can read in class. To begin with reading books will be wordless. This is to familiarise the children with the reading process and to teach comprehension skills (e.g. prediction, empathising with the character and summarising).
Reminders:
Please ensure that your child comes to school with a named water bottle each day. These bottles should only contain water.
Please name all clothes worn in school.

Thank you for all your support

Author Visit by David MacPhail

Today, Primary 4-7 children at Carmondean were treated to a very special event. The children’s author, David MacPhail, visited the school to give a presentation on writing and to sign copies of his book. The children were very interested to hear how David used mind-mapping to plan out his plots, characters and settings, and then collaborated with him to make a mind-map for an imaginary book with a main character who turned out to be a ginger-haired banana that secretly wanted to be broccoli.  If you think that’s strange, ask your child who the villain was – it is even more surprising.

David was very complimentary about our children’s focus and behaviour during his presentation and sent this email through Gloworm books. who organised the visit:

What made it such a joy, we were met with children who were polite and really well behaved, who took part and enjoyed the fun of creating the characters for their own book, at David’s session.  We appreciate the work of the staff to help make this a really enjoyable event for us as well.
I think you should be really proud of your  children and staff at Carmondean and we would look forward to hosting events with you again.
Look forward to learning all about the banana with the ginger hair and his battle against the president!
What more can we say?  We know all of this already.

Primary 6

Welcome back Primary 6! It has been a fun week getting back in the swing of it after a great summer. Finding out about all of Primary 6’s summer adventures has been a great way to get into the new school year and by the sounds of it everyone has had a lovely and well-spent holiday. We have found out all about each other with our getting to know you board game, getting some good random facts too!

We got very creative thinking about our magic box and all the weird, wonderful and sometimes heartfelt things we would put in them. They had some fantastic images and remembered a lot of their adjectives and similes and we will be making their boxes next week.

The pupils can’t wait to get started on our topic for this term which will be the Industrial Revolution. We will be learning what life was like before big Victorian industry came along and how it changed not just Britain but the whole world. Pupils will get a chance to show off their ingenuity by creating inventions and showing them off to see which of them is a budding Alexander Graham Bell.

Primary 7

In our usual Carmondean style, our first week of our new school year has been very busy! The Primary 7s have excelled in their buddy roles and we are extremely proud of how they have conducted themselves. We have talked a lot about the up and coming year and it’s been lovely to see such enthusiasm from the pupils, Keep it up primary 7.

The primary 7s have written the following about their week –

We were all very excited to start primary 7 . We have had a very busy week helping our buddies and we have also made class charters using pandas and emojiis! We started reading Wonder and we have also written about what we would do if we were the head teacher.

Primary 4 24.8.18

Hello everyone

Welcome to the P4 blog. We hope you had a lovely summer. We have really enjoyed meeting the children and beginning to get to know them over the past few days.

We have had a busy first week hearing all about everyone’s summer holidays. The children wrote about 3 things that they enjoyed the most about their holidays. They also worked on creating our classroom charters which tell the children about their rights and about how to respect the rights of others. We are creating classroom displays based on our charters.

We have also been learning about the importance of positive, happy thoughts even when things are difficult or tricky. The children were able to identify their strengths and we have started making a display for the hall about concentrating on the positives instead of the negatives. We are sure this will look fantastic!

Our annual Meet the Teacher event takes place next Wednesday (29th August) from 4:30-5:30. This is a drop in event where you can meet your child’s new teacher, look around the classroom, see work your child has completed in the first 2 weeks and explore resources that they may be using in Primary 4. Miss Donaldson & I are looking forward to meeting many of you then.

Next week we will send out a newsletter containing all of the important information needed for this term including what the children will be learning in each subject area and important dates (including PE days). Please look out for this in your child’s school bag.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Miss Clark & Miss Donaldson

Welcome to Primary 1

Hello All,

Welcome to all our new Parent/Carers and Primary 1 children!

We were very excited to welcome our new Primary 1’s who looked very smart in their school uniforms. With the help of their buddies they have already started learning school routines and are  developing independence carrying out these tasks.

We have started our week with the story of the Rainbow Fish which is a great stimulus for discussions about similarities and differences and friendships. The children have also produced some lovely art work from the story.

This week we have also discussed the class charter with the children which is based on the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child). We have focussed on the children’s rights to be safe, learn and play at this stage. We will be sending the charters that have been agreed with the children home for you to discuss with your child and would be very grateful if you could sign and send this back to show your support.

The children will have their first ‘Freetime Friday’ session on Friday (24th August.) This is reward time which children earn throughout the week. To make this special we are going to allow the children to bring toys from home on a trial basis. We will review this throughout the year if it does/does not work well. You will receive a letter before Friday with details.

The termly newspaper and ‘Meet the Teacher’ next Wednesday (29th Aug)  will give further information about what is happening the rest of this term in addition to our weekly updates on the blog.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask teachers at the end of the day or phone the school office.

Thank you for your support,

Primary 1 Teachers

Eliburn Park with the Super Circle

The children in the ‘Super Circle’ who have consistently achieved their targets this term were rewarded with a picnic at Eliburn Park this week.  The weather was glorious and the boys had an amazing time playing on all the equipment and playing ‘Hide and Seek’.  We also managed to eat lots of food and squeeze in a walk around the reservoir.  On the way back we worked on extending our vocabulary by playing ‘I Spy’……..which Mrs Marshall was amazing at 🙂  It was a wonderful end to the term and the boys were super.

Cake Decorating with the Super Circle

The children in the ‘Super Circle’ have been working very hard at achieving their class targets throughout this term.  As a reward for their hard work they had the opportunity to decorate cupcakes to share with their teachers and family.  It was really good fun and hopefully the cakes will be well received by mums and dads……if they make it home 🙂

Our Day at Camera Obscura

The ‘Cool Kids’ had our annual day out at ‘Camera Obscura’ in Edinburgh last week.  We had an amazing time exploring the vortex tunnel and the mirror maze and looking at all the wonderful exhibits.  We particularly enjoyed the room that made us look tiny or gigantic and the magic box that made it appear that our heads were floating :).  The photo box that let us see what we would look like when we are very old was really hilarious.  After all the fun of ‘Camera Obscura’ we headed to Princes Street gardens for a picnic, before rounding our day with some ice-cream.

Primary 3 News 18.6.18

Thank you to all of you for coming to see us on Friday, last week. The children were very excited to show off their work and share their dream jobs with you.

We have a busy week ahead of us starting with our Beach Trip tomorrow. Please can you make sure the children have applied sun cream before they get dressed in the morning. They can then wear their swimming things under their shorts along with plenty of layers such as a t shirt, fleece/jumper and a waterproof jacket. They must also bring footwear for paddling in such as flip flops or croc style shoes as well as a spare plastic bag containing extra pants, socks, t shirt and shorts or trousers. They must also bring a towel, snack, water bottle and packed lunch unless provided by the school and a bucket and spade all labelled with names.

On Wednesday we will be having our annual Sports Day. Children will need to bring in their PE kits with their house colour T shirt. If they do not have that particular colour then a bib will be provided. Again, please ensure your child has a water bottle.

Reading and phonics as normal although this will be our last week of homework.

Have a good week!

Primary 7 13.6.18

Hello everyone

It was lovely to welcome everyone back after their week of transition at Deans Community High School last week. We were very pleased to hear that the children thoroughly enjoyed their transition activities and now feel more familiar with the high school environment.

The last 3 weeks of Primary 7 are going to our busiest yet! The children have been exploring the skills, qualities and qualifications that you need in order to succeed in a variety of different occupations. We have researched a huge amount of careers including video game testing, geology, plumbing and translation! Now the children are working in groups to display their findings in creative ways and will be creating advertisements to showcase their chosen career. All of this hard work will be on display at our Carmondean Open Morning on Friday morning.

Parents, families and friends of children in P7C can visit the school between 9:30-10:30am and parents, families and friends of children in P7M can visit the school between 11:00-12:00. We really look forward to seeing you & the children are looking forward to showing their learning.

Rehearsals for the Leavers Assembly are now well underway. The children now know their lines and are working on perfecting the show and practising the songs. We are looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 27th June at 1:30pm in the big hall.

Next Tuesday 19th June the children will be going to Aberdour Beach with their P1 buddies. Please ensure that the children return their EE2 forms and £4 for the bus as soon as possible. The children should come prepared for all weathers and bring a packed lunch with them or order one from the school in advance.

Thank you for all your support.

Miss Clark & Mrs Macaulay

Primary 1 13.6.18

Primary 1 did an excellent job in their assembly about farming yesterday morning. Thank you to everyone who helped by practising lines at home. The children enjoyed sharing their learning with you all.
Yesterday we made butter as a class. We learnt about how butter is churned both now and in the past and made our own by shaking double cream in a jar. It was great fun and the butter tasted great on crackers!

This coming Friday is our open morning. Parents are invited to visit the classes to see our learning about the world of work. Today we will be talking about the jobs we know about already and which jobs we would like to have in the future. We will also be completing a critical skills challenge about examples of jobs found in magazines and newspapers. These posters will be on display on Friday morning. During the Friday morning session the children will be creating posters about a job someone in their family does. Please talk to your child about a job they could write about before then. They are allowed to bring in pens for creating the poster.
Reminders:
The beach trip is next Tuesday (19th June). Please ensure you have returned the relevant form and money for this.
Sports Day is scheduled for next Wednesday afternoon. Children can bring a T-shirt in house colours to wear (Dear Park- blue, Raeburn- green, Sutherland- yellow, Waverley- red). There are also bibs in school in each colour if your child needs one.
Thank you for your continued support

This week we have been working towards our exciting open morning on Friday based around our World or Work challenge.  So far we have discussed what our parents and grandparents do for a living and it has been interesting hearing about the variety of jobs many of you do. Building on this, tomorrow we will be talking about what our dream job would be and using this information to create charts and posters.  We look forward to seeing you all on Friday so we can show you what we have been working on.

Please remember that next week is our annual trip to the beach- please return EE2 forms as soon as possible.
