PE weekly update

What an amazing week in PE!

The sports committee were adding Aldi stickers to our chart and we now have 120- can you help us reach 150 by next Friday please?

Primary 5 today completed a hat trick today for all bringing their PE kit so they get rewarded next week with their own choice of activity. Which class will be next to do this? Please help them remember!

P6 took part in the cluster cross country event at Dechmont Law and put all their training into practice. They showed they knew how to pace themselves and keep running all the way in the 1.1KM race. Fantastic results from Blair Flood as 1st over the line in the boys race and Abbiegail Beer 3rd in the girls race.We also has 9 primary 7s in the west Lothian championships race and they ran superbly. What a gorgeous autumn day for it.

Primary 7 27.09.19

In maths we have been looking at symmetry and shapes. In Symmetry we looked at regular and irregular polygons to find out how many sides and lines of symmetry each had. We learned about the properties of 3D Shapes including pyramids, prisms, cuboid, cone, dodecahedron, triangular based pyramid, square based pyramid, cylinder and sphere.   Michael says a cube whilst not a polygon, is made up of that shape (6 squares).

We are working on our times tables. We have been learning long multiplication using tens, hundreds and thousands. Remember to practise these at home!

In writing we have been focusing on Persuasive writing – We chose our favourite holiday destination and tried to entice the reader that that would be their dream place they wanted to visit.  We used brilliant openers, points of view/paragraphs, emotive language, adjectives and adverbs and finally supported our point of view.  We will be continuing to focus on writing persuasively over the next few weeks.

In PE we are continuing with Basketball and learned various techniques; we were split into four teams where two of the teams not playing assessed two players on the pitch to ascertain if they had good passes, dribbling skills and shooting techniques.

In French  we looked at general  everyday conversations and learned how to answer a partner when he/she asked a question.  We then wrote some conversations into speech bubbles.

We are continuing to learn all about Japan. This week we compared the country to Scotland and found out several differences.  We are so looking forward to a visit from the Japanese Consulate next week.

Primary 7 20.09.19

Hello, it has been a very short week, however we have managed to fit a lot in!

Rachel from Dogs Trust came to visit us on Thursday with her dog (don’t worry it wasn’t real!) She taught us about what dogs need to be happy and healthy and answered all of our questions about her job. We enjoyed learning how to budget for a dog. We had to decide which dog we would like and picked dog products which suited our chosen dog. Each item had a price which we had to add up. We couldn’t believe how much money our dogs would cost us to look after them for just one year – the amount ranged from £750 – over a thousand pounds!!

In maths we are continuing to learn about the properties of 2D shapes – we focused on the circle. We learned about the names of each part of a circle and were very good at the circle quiz! In numeracy we have continued to look at place value to a million and beyond – this has included rounding, estimating, decimals and much more!

With Ms Fox we have started to create our Japanese masks which we have been planning and practising for. These masks will be unique as we have made up our own special patterns inspired by Japanese culture. Look out for them around the school over the next couple of weeks!

In literacy we learned about a special poem which originates from Japan called a Haiku. It is a special poem which is only 3 lines long! It also follows a rule where the first line contains 5 syllables, the second line contains 7 syllables and the third line has 5 syllables. These poems are normally about nature, seasons and feelings about these. We drew fabulous pictures in the background of our poems to go with our wonderful writing.

PE update

What a great week in PE.  We had another class who all remembered their PE kit – Well Done Primary 5B

Please remember PE kit on gym days as performance is so much better in comfortable PE clothing.

And please remember to hand in Aldi stickers so we can get to our 300 target- thanks in advance

Did you know the Rugby World Cup starts this weekend? Scotland play their first game on Sunday morning against Ireland.

P7

They learned about  rebounding the ball after a shot has been taken. They tried this in small group practice and then put the learning into 2 v 2 games.

P6

We got outside for Cross Country training and let the dice decide how far they were to run! And then they had to work out what pace we could run the distance. It’s 2 weeks until they take part in the cluster event at Dechmont Law so if they can try and run over the weekend that would improve their stamina even more.

P5

They had fun working with a partner to make letters of the alphabet with their bodies.  They took pictures using the ipads to see whether or not it looked really like the letter. Partners then gave advice on how to make the letter shape better.

P4

Today they recapped balances and then linked a balance with a roll. eg Front support to pencil roll There were so many ideas and it was great to be able to share these with a partner and sometimes with the whole class.

P3A

The class played games that helped with throwing and catching. They worked out that team mates should move closer to the person throwing the ball to make it a bit easier and ensure they can catch.

P3B

Today we  were learning how to cartwheel using benches, mats and dots on the floor. lots of the class can already cartwheel and they were challenged to manage it in a straight line , or along or over a bench.

Thanks

Mrs Ferguson

PE weekly update

PE Kit

It’s been a fantastic week in PE with  P7A  winning the first Most Prepared for PE Certificate of the year when all of the class brought PE kit for their basketball lesson. Please help your child to remember their PE kit on PE days as it is much easier, more comfortable and usually safer to take part in PE with shorts/leggings, t-shirt and gym shoes than while wearing school uniform.  They are all desperate to get a certificate 3 weeks in a row because that wins their class a choice of activity for PE.

Class activities

At the moment the classes that come to me are learning/developing the following activities:

P7  Basketball

P6 Cross Country

P5 Gymnmastics- Partnerwork

P4 Gymnastics- Rolling

P3A  Benchball

P3B  Gymnastics- shape

How can you help

Please ask them what they have been doing and ( if safe to do so) show you what they have been learning.

See how active you can be over the holiday weekend.  The sun is to shine so can you get out on your bike, go for a walk/run, take a ball to the park to play football/rugby/netball.

Mrs Ferguson

Primary 7 – 06.09.19

Bonjour!

We have had a very busy week in Primary 7 this week. We began our first topic of Primary 7 – Japan. We learned about where Japan is in relation to Scotland, looked at the Japanese flag and discussed what we know about the landscape, culture and much more. We are looking forward to finding out more next week!

In RME we learned about special journeys called Pilgrimages. We researched and discussed some pilgrimages that some Christians go on. Each week we will be focusing on different pilgrimages from a different World religion.

In maths we have been working on symmetrical patterns and completing the other half of a given pattern with a range of vertical, horizontal and diagonal mirror lines. We have also been looking at the properties of 2D shapes with a focus this week on quadrilaterals. In numeracy we have been busy practicing our mental recall skills and learning about place value of 6 digit numbers and beyond.

Chris and Derek came to our classes on Wednesday to deliver a workshop about racism. We learned that we should not judge people on how they look and get to know the person. We talked about the effect racism has on people and took part in a range of activities.

Caitlin, Michael and Isla helped with our blog today .

Reminders:

Spelling homework – Due on Friday

Numeracy homework – play numeracy games (see previous blog for ideas)

Monday and Wednesday – PE kits

Primary 7

It was lovely to see so many of you at our meet the teacher session on Wednesday, thanks to those who came along. Our first term newsletter has now been distributed and it provides a brief overview of what we will be working on. We continue to be very impressed with the attitude all the primary sevens are demonstrating with regards to their buddies, well done!
“When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind”
We are currently reading Wonder by R.J.Palacio. We will be continuing with the novel over the next few weeks and discussing the themes of kindness, inclusion and friendship which are explored throughout the story.
We have reiterated the importance of times tables and will continue to do so throughout primary 7. The pupils have been shown a number of games and activities to help their recall.

( Two Player activities )
1 . Rock Paper Scissors

Each player writes down the same word on paper. They face each other and with their fists closed they make the action used at the beginning of the game Rock, Paper, Scissors. After counting to three they each hold up a number of fingers eg. Player one may hold up 6 fingers and player 2 chooses to hold up 8. The first person to shout out the answer to 6 x 8 crosses off the first letter of the word. The winner is the person who manages to cross off all the letters of the word first.
This game can be made more difficult by making the value fingers greater of smaller. For example each finger is worth 10 or 0.1 .

2. Multiplication Snap

A pack of playing cards are dealt between two players . Player one placed a card face up on the table. Player 2 places a card face up on top . The players multiply the cards together; the player who calls out the answer first wins the cards.
To make the games more difficult the value of the cards can be changed , for example a 3 could become 30 or 0.3 .
Please ask your child to explain the I Say , You Say game . ( Number Bonds to 10 , 20 , 50 , 100)
We have explained that we may not send home a physical maths sheet every week , however we do expect the pupils to practise their mental maths every week .

Next week we will be beginning our topic on Japan.

Primary 7 24.05.19

Primary 7 have been very busy this week.

We have been working on our topic – ‘Leaving a Legacy’. Each team have been working on a campaign based on an environmental issue that we feel strongly about. We have been busy writing letters, creating posters, PowerPoints and filming our campaign speeches. We will continue to work hard on our campaigns over the next week.

In maths and numeracy we have been working on a range of topics including algebra and data handling. We also have been enjoying playing ‘beat the buddy’ in mental maths.

We have been busy planning and preparing for our Leavers’ Assembly – we will continue to work on this over the next few weeks and are getting excited about performing it in front of everyone on our last week of Primary school!

Our big Primary 7 piece of homework is due in next Friday. The children have worked really hard at home and in class on their projects. All pupils have a checklist to help them make sure they have all the information they need for their My Life So Far. These projects will be shared with peers and shown at assembly to celebrate their time at Carmondean Primary.

France Trip

Fantastic day had by all at Plopsaland, it was a hard job getting through the door though!

Mrs Wylie now has a sore throat from screaming too much on the rides but at least she had her eyes open … Mrs Wotherspoon went down the water slide with her eyes firmly shut !

Isla – the beach was in Calais
Niven – for breakfast we had more crepes !

Miss all the other starbursts x

France Trip

Arrived safe and sound in Belgium this morning . Fun was had by all on the boat even if it did take a few a little while to find their sea legs .

Isla – The boat was awesome
Abby – The food was amazing
Heather -It was exciting

Carmondean took to the dance floor and showed the rest of the passengers how to boogie!

We drove straight to Dunkirk beach this morning . The sun was shining as we walked to the memorial. We all found it hard to image what it must have been like during Operation Dynamo.
After lunch on the beach , we went to fort de Dunes . Our guides were excellent and really gave us a sense of what conditions would have been like during WW2.

On leaving the fort we travelled to our hotel in Calais . After unpacking we had dinner then headed to play on the beach . Mrs Ferguson will be very pleased with us as we practiced our relay … in flip flops !

It’s a quick shower to wash the sand off before bed .

Bonsoir

Primary 7 3.5.19

We can’t quite believe we have reached May already, in true Primary 7 style our last term looks like it will be as busy as all the others!

Primary 7 have decided that they would like to leave a legacy for the rest of the school in the form of a campaign involving environmental messages that they hope will be adopted by all. They have also thought of a physical legacy and are currently working on plans to achieve this …watch this space!

For this term we have changed our language homework, moving the focus away from predominantly spelling to boosting our vocabulary. Within our classrooms we have Word Boost Walls, please ask your child for an explanation of how we use these walls. Each Monday, your child will choose FIVE words. They will research the meaning of each word and write a sentence for each word. Various stimuli will be provided throughout the school week but the pupils may choose their words independently. Jotters must be handed in on a Friday at the latest. If a pupil does not finish their sentences in class they should complete them as homework.

We are studying data handling in maths, if you use spreadsheets or any other forms of data handling at home or in work please discuss what you use it for with your child. We are currently compiling, displaying and analysing information.

Your child was given a letter regarding our Living and Growing topic this term. We aim to start using this resource next week, please contact the school ASAP if you would like to discuss any aspect of this area of the curriculum.

The prom committee met for the first time this week. They will be helping to organise the decorations, picking what food will be served and deciding on any other activities they may want at the prom. Their first job is to ask the rest of P7 for any ideas and thoughts. The excitement is building!

The residential trip to France is coming up fast! The children are being given reminders in school to help them organise their belongings. Remember if your child needs medication please collect the appropriate form from the school office. Bonjour!

Primary 7

We celebrated World Book Day by having a shared reading session with our P1 buddies. The P7s did an imaginative job of bringing characters to life and those reading nonfiction delivered and discussed facts in a stimulating ways. Well done P7 !

Our rehearsals are going well and our choreography team are in full force!.

LEARNING SCRIPTS * LEARNING SCRIPTS* LEARNING SCRIPTS

Please help our P7s to learn their words. The countdown is on and we need pupils to be able to deliver their lines without relying on their scripts. Many thanks to those who have sent in show costumes already.

We are continuing with our investigation of shapes and we have been learning to describe the various properties of individual shapes . Please quiz you child and ask them to list a variety of properties of any household item .

We would like to remind everyone to return slips regarding our coffee afternoon next Tuesday. The event provides a great opportunity to ask question of the visiting Deans staff with regards to transition.

Primary 7 – 01/03/19

What a jammed packed day we had on Tuesday when we had a visit from Homefront Histories! Our large hall was transformed into the 1940’s and the pupils were set a variety of challenges to complete. Our day was punctuated with a number of stops as we had to run to our air raid shelter as the siren sounded! We have added a selection of pictures below.

The pupils have made a good start of their WW2 challenge, with all topics selected. We would advise that if the children are using the internet for research purposes at home that they use a child friendly search engine such as Kiddle. Some of the images and information relating to WW2 subjects can be disturbing. Please monitor the sources used.

Letters have now been sent home with pupils who require specific items for their show costumes. Your help with this is greatly appreciated as always.

When we started our literature circle project, the pupils were given a choice of novels. We thought it would be a good idea for the pupils to share their thoughts of the novels they have chosen. It may entice others to read some of the alternative choices independently.

This week’s blurb was written by Dorka, Megan, Bendi, Heather and Nathan.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

By John Boyne

This full–of–drama novel puts you in the shoes of nine year old Bruno whose love of exploration gets him in all kinds of trouble. The question filled little boy gets the reader asking questions with him; why did we have to move? Why do we have a father called the commandant? What are all the people in striped pyjamas doing on the other side of the fence? Soon he meets a friend on the other side of the fence and even more questions come up.

We knew that we had a talented bunch of pupils but we didn’t realise their talents stretched to directing and producing …the ideas from the pupils for developing their show are superb! Keep the creative juices flowing , we love to see some improvisation!

Quite a few of our pupils have been caught without their ID cards this week . Their ‘fines’ have ranged from press ups to cleaning paint pots. We carried out research on war time rationing this week. The pupils wrote their own typical weekly meals plan and then worked out what they would not be able to have if rationing was still enforced. Many were horrified ( and we don’t think that’s an exaggeration ) of the lack of variety and the limited fruit supplies . Of course sugar and chocolate in particular was discussed but we thought we would start with the fruit reaction!

We are calculating percentages of amounts in numeracy, if you are shopping and spot any discounts offering percentages off, please ask your child to calculate it for you.

We are delighted with the number of pupils who have shared their family history regarding WW2 , thank you to all the parents , grandparents and great grandparents who have helped bring our project to life . Your input is very much appreciated.

We hope everyone enjoys their long weekend !

Primary 7 – 25.01.19

Happy Robert Burns Day!

Primary 7 had a fantastic Scots afternoon on Wednesday in light of Burns Day today. We are the first class to have had our haggis piped in by bagpipes which is a huge honour. Huge thanks to Leo who has worked so hard for the past 3 weeks to learn the music for us! We had our Address to the Haggis and Selkirk Grace performed by Alex and Aimee respectively, had some haggis and shortbread with juice and then sang songs and performed poems to each other. It was such a lovely afternoon and we must say thank you to those who stood up to perform their poems and joined in with the singing.

Our novels are beginning to grow on us all and we are having great discussions in class about our homework tasks. Everyone has really connected with the characters already and are eager to read their next section pages for Wednesday 30th.

In numeracy we are continuing to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and we have been looking at circles and measurement in maths. Can you change 20cm into metres or millimetres?

Miss Mulhern’s class have just completed their swimming block and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We learned many different strokes and all showed great improvement in such a short time! Mrs Muir/Mrs Wylie’s class, we are sure you are going to love it too!

We have now given out parts for the school show. Please understand that the staff have many ideas for the show and are working hard to add in more lines or singing parts where we think possible. If your child is unhappy with their role, they must speak to their teacher about it before Tuesday and we will see what we can do.

Primary 7 18.01.19

It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm in Primary 7 with regards to their novels. Emotions are running high already as we make connections with our favourite characters and try to understand what it must have been like to live in their time. Each group has been assigned a task from their literacy circle packs and should have it ready for their literacy circle meeting on Wednesday.

We began our auditions for our senior show this week and we were delighted with the number of pupils who put themselves forward. We hope to announce roles by the end of next week.

In numeracy we are continuing to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and we are studying 2D and 3D shape in math sessions. Do you know what a nine sided shape is called?

We have seen signs of great teamwork this week as the pupils learned and practised their Scottish poems together. All pupils will recite their poems on Monday and Tuesday of next week and the winning class performers will repeat their rendition at our Scottish Assembly next Friday .

Happy New Year and welcome back to school everyone! We have had a great start to the year with many things kicking off straight away. We have started our new topic on WWII this week with a background of the war and key events that took place. We all found it extremely interesting and have been looking forward to continuing our learning in this topic. If anyone has any accounts of grandparents or great-grandparents that were in the war we will be having an opportunity for these to be told in class. Our school show has got the pupils buzzing with excitement! This year we have a videogame theme and lots of colourful and fun characters for the children to become. At the moment we will all be learning the songs and will be beginning to think about which parts we would like to play. Please be reminded that the main parts will be highly sought after and so pupils must be prepared to audition for the part if required. Swimming has started for P7M and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves at their first session! Thank you to the team at DCHS for organising this for the classes. Don’t worry P7W, it’s your turn next! We will remind you of dates nearer the time. Scottish poems have been given out to each pupil to learn over the coming weeks. These have to be performed to the class on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd of January. Practise makes perfect so please make sure they are practised at home (although time will be given in class for this too).

REMINDERS – PE – Outdoor Kit Mondays (P7W), Swimming Kit Mondays (P7M), Indoor Kit Tuesday (ALL)

Homework – spelling words will be given on Mondays with homework due on Fridays. We are now concentrating on sentences and will not be expecting the children to complete a spelling activity. Reading – Children have set the amount of pages they must complete each week and will be assigned a task to complete along with it. This will be given out on a Wednesday and is to be completed for the following Wednesday.

Maths – PLEASE REINFORCE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION.

Poetry – Please ensure your child is practising their poem in preparation for Scot’s Week.
