Primary 1 Update 14.3.18

Hello All,

This week in Primary 1, we have had a very active time raising awareness for Sport Relief.  Each class is running as far as they can each day and we will add the distances together  to see how far around Scotland we have run as a school! Thank goodness the weather has improved!!

In RME, we have begun learning about the Easter Story and Easter Traditions. As part of this the children will decorate and roll their own egg next Wednesday (21st March). We would be very grateful if you could please send in a boiled egg on that day for your child to decorate.

This week the children will take part in an Easter Egg Hunt on Thursday organised by the PSA.

In Maths, we are continuing our work on Time and have been focusing on telling half past times on analogue clocks. Please help your child to practise this whenever possible.

We have begun our new topic – The Enchanted Forest and have started by researching facts about woodland animals and will be learning about nocturnal and diurnal animals.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Primary 1 Teachers

Glee Competition

Our children performed tonight at the West Lothian heat of the Glee competition at Howden Park Centre. They were all absolutely fabulous and certainly did the school and their parents proud both onstage and off. Although they didn’t win, they all had a fantastic time.  Some photos below of the event and a video of them backstage singing along to a song which would have been their set piece should they have got through.

Lendrick Muir Tuesday evening

We have almost come to the end of another day at Lendrick Muir. This morning we completed the other 2 activities that we didn’t try yesterday.

In the afternoon we went to the forest where we had to complete team problem solving challenges for points. We then had to return to the centre and the points we earned were used to buy materials to protect an egg.  The eggs were wrapped in parcels and some even had parachutes.  The eggs were then dropped from the top floor window.  Amazingly 3 out of 5 eggs survived the drop.

Tonight we are looking forward to playing on inflatables in the games hall.

Everyone has had a super time here and can’t wait to tell you all about it tomorrow.  Thank you for all you lovely messages the children have really enjoyed hearing them.

See you all tomorrow from

P5 and the staff

Primary 6 9.3.18

We had the privilege of meeting Craig Mclean this week, who is a member of the Scottish swimming team competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Craig, a past pupil of Carmondean , gave us a detailed talk about his journey to the games . We all felt inspired and motivated by his determination. All of primary six wish Craig the very best, good luck!
We can’t quite believe show dress rehearsal is next week! We are all getting rather excited and if performances to date are anything to go by its going to be a fantastic show! Letters have now been sent home regarding tickets.
Our topic studies this week required us all to be history detectives as we examined primary and secondary Titanic resources. Next week we will be presenting evidence and putting forward arguments as to who we think is most responsible for loss of life. Courtroom drama in primary six.
We are continuing our work with fractions and are beginning to covert fractions to decimals and percentages and vice versa. Please try this at home and when you are out and about.

Visit by Commonwealth Games Athlete

Today, we were very fortunate to have a visit to Carmondean PS by a former-pupil of our school, Craig McLean, whose mum, Mrs McLean, works in our school office. Craig has been selected to swim for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia from 05-09 April, 2018. Craig has had a lot of success in his chosen sport, but this opportunity must rank as his highest achievement to date. He will swim in the 200m freestyle individual event and be part of the relay team for the 100m and 200m. Craig presented to a packed hall and told all about his training and what it is like to be part of such a high profile team at such an auspicious event. The children had prepared questions for Craig to answer and everyone had a great time listening to his answers. We can only wish Craig and the Scottish Team every success in Gold Coast – we are sure they will do us proud!

Primary 2/3 7.3.18

Welcome back Primary 2/3! Thank you to all the boys and girls who completed snow day activities, read and posted on the blog. The work some of the boys and girls brought in was fabulous! Brilliant effort.

This week in maths we are continuing with division by 2 and 10 with Primary 3 and Primary 2 are finding doubles and near doubles using rekenreks and number lines. Some of of children are even managing to answer some of our questions mentally which is fantastic.

Children will be continuing to read their reading books from last week. The children have also been given a non-fiction text to read this week. Encourage your children using the contents page and discuss the facts from the book.

In our topic this week we are learning about Roman slaves. Boys and girls have been finding out that their lives were tough and being a slave meant you belonged to somebody. Some of our children couldn’t believe all the work they had to do. We are also going to begin looking at Roman Gladiators and how they battled in the Coliseum.

We will be doing our planned Health lesson with our comfort toys this Thursday. Could the children bring their toys to help aid our discussion and circle time.

We have Craig McLean coming into school today to talk to the boys and girls about becoming a commonwealth athlete. The children are very excited to meet him and ask him questions about his career.

P.E- Wednesday

Easter Egg hunt letters need to come back asap with a payment of £1 to take part in the hunt and receive a chocolate treat!

Primary 1 w.b. 5.3.18

Welcome back! It has been great seeing the children again after our few snow days last week.
This week there will be no homework folders going home. The children still have a reading book though and we appreciate all the work you are doing at home with it. If you are looking for anything else to do, please continue practising sounding out words and counting forwards and backwards to 30.
This week our maths focus will be numbers to 30. The children will be writing these numbers and counting out values up to 30. We are also working on telling the time to both o’clock and half past on analogue clocks.
In phonics we are learning some blended sounds (sh, ch and th). This week our focus is ch. The children have come up with lots of words containing ch and are making great progress reading and writing these words by themselves.
This week we are beginning our new interdisciplinary topic; ‘The enchanted forest’. We will be using different art techniques over the next few days to create our very own class forest in the classroom. We will be learning about woodland animals in our interdisciplinary lessons and this week will find out facts about badgers.
Reminders: PE is on Thursday mornings, please remember to bring a PE kit this day.
Children should have indoor shoes to wear around the classroom. This is especially important with the weather just now.
Your child has received home a letter for the PSA Easter Egg hunt. If you want your child to attend please bring in the return form and £1 as soon as possible.
Thank you
Miss Christy, Mrs Oliver and Mrs Harris

Instead of handing out new phonic words we will continue working on the same sounds but we have asked children to write 5 sentences with their words.

PE will take place for both classes on Tuesday and for P3S on Wednesday.

We will continue to look at division this week and finish off our Time focus.

Have a good week!

Primary 3 Snow Day 3!

Hi all!

Hope you’re enjoying all this snow still! My boys have enjoyed trying to bury themselves in it today!

What have you been up to?

Instead of building a snowman today, could you build a castle? Include all of its features such as a snowy moat?

You could wrap snowballs in different materials and leave them for ten minutes in a bowl and see which was the best insulator? Which was the worst?

If you are inside why not curl up with a good book or even draw me a picture diary of the last few days you’ve had at home?

Stay warm!

Mrs Smith & Mr Gordon

Primary 5 Snow Day 3

Good morning Primary 5

I hope you are all staying warm and having fun in the snow.

Here are some activites you can do today.

Mrs Jamieson’s maths set, make a poster to show your understanding of equivalent fractions.  Use pictures and numbers to show different fractions.

Miss Farren’s maths set can make a fraction wall and identify the equivalent fractions as we began in class.

Make a list of spelling words containing ch as in scheme and ache.  Make a wordsearch to hide the words in.

Go our and measure the largest snowdrift in your garden and the longest icicle.

Design a snow poster: Draw and label all the activities you have been doing during your days off. Bring your poster to share with us in school or post us a selfie picture!

Have a lovely day

Mrs Jamieson and Miss Farren
