Last week of term

The end of Term 1 is almost upon us!  Three of our pupils shared some exciting news with us this week, so we simply had to get a photo to celebrate their achievements.

We are lucky to have such an inviting and comfortable library in our school.    What a lovely time  we had on Tuesday, relaxing with our books.  We hope that P4/5/6 continue to read over the holidays too!

Many of us enjoy being able to choose what we write about in class. It was lovely to see everyone working so hard to achieve their writing targets this week.  We sat together on Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed sharing what we had written with everyone.  It was fantastic to see how many children were excited to share their writing and give positive feedback to others.

Maths time on Wednesday morning was good fun, playing number games with our friends.  We had to remember to take turns and listen carefully to each other.

In the afternoon we spent time building jigsaws in small groups.  Some jigsaws were tricky and will need more time to complete, but I know that we have some determined pupils in P4/5/6 who will keep going , even when the task seems impossible!

JRSO Work

We have one JRSO pupil within our P4/5/6 class, who has been working with the other P6 pupils in Mrs Scanlan’s class next door, to help promote road safety in our school.  These pupils worked so hard to compile and deliver a special assembly following Road Safety Week.  They also invited the older classes to create a road scene picture which highlighted some of the road safety dangers they addressed in their assembly.  These pictures are displayed in the main foyer.  Time has also been spent with some of the younger P2 pupils playing a board game that reinforces road safety.  The JRSO pupils also plan to visit the ELC pupils to share ‘Ziggy’ stories in the future.  Well done to all the JRSOs!

It’s quiz time!

Wednesday afternoon was spent in P1/2, sharing with them the electrical quiz boards that we made last term.

Each pair supported a couple of P1/2s to try out their quiz and gave them time to explore the electrical circuits used to the play the game.  If they managed to match the question with the correct answer, the bulb lit up!

Everyone in P4/5/6 did so well to explain their quiz and how to use it.  They showed patience and understanding when more time was needed for the pupil to find the right answer.  We would like to thank the P1/2s for having us in their classroom, they listened so well to their buddies and were so enthusiastic about each game they played.

We have missed having these opportunities to mix with other classes and develop important communication and social skills.  We hope to be able to do something like this again soon!

Maths with Mrs Douglas

For the past couple of weeks, we’ve been building on our understanding of angles – naming them, recognising them, measuring and drawing and using our knowledge to help us work out missing angles.  Some pupils wrote out instructions for their peers to use to help them draw angles of different sizes.  They then took on the role of teacher, supporting their classmates as they worked and offering advice when needed.  The lesson was enjoyed by all and it was clear to see that some pupils had gained in confidence after working in this way.  I think we have some future teachers in the class!
