What the ladybird heard

We listened to the story called ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ and then we followed it up with ‘What the Ladybird Heard Next’

It got us thinking that we could be quite creative and make some ladybird stones while we were doing outdoor learning.  We had great fun, here are some pictures.  We learned about colours, symmetry, numbers, ladybirds, language and many other things.  All whilst having fun and working with friends.

Beetle maths

Play beetle maths by trying to draw the beetle.  Roll a dice and if you can give a correct addition sum with the answer then you draw that part of the beetle.  Remember you have to draw a body first.  You can only draw a head once you have a body.  You can only draw antenna and eyes of you have a head.

To make it harder, change the numbers for the beetle’s body parts to make them higher, then you can add more than two numbers in your sum to give the answer.

Do it in French using your number knowledge.

Key words: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, onze, douze, treize, quatorze, quinze, seize, dix sept, dix huit, dix neuf, vingt, plus +, egal =

Information Handling

These past few weeks we have been finding out about different ways we can collect, sort and record information during our Maths time, Topic work and also in our free choosing time.  Please look at some of the activities we’ve been part of.  😊

Traffic Survey

As part of our Maths work on information handling, we wrapped up warm and went to the top of the road to record all the different types of transport that passed by.  We used tally marks to help us keep count.  We were delighted to see something from each type on our sheet.  We even saw some of our parents and grandparents go by!  Here are some of our photos.  We hope to share some more with you at our P1/2 Assembly in a few weeks.

2D Shape

Today small groups have worked around different 2D shape stations.  They were busy playing a shape game with Mrs Sutherland where they had to spot shapes in the environment.  Some had to create and continue repeating patterns and in pairs, they worked on describing shapes for their partner to guess.  The final station asked them to create 2D pictures and patterns on an iPad and count how many of each shape was used.  Everyone enjoyed the Maths session today!

Maths – Measurement

Today during Maths time, we have been exploring length.  We have been measuring to show “longer than” and “shorter than”.

Active Maths

The end of term is fast approaching but we’re still busy working on our Maths.  Some pupils had to work together to choose a starting number and write the following numbers in sequence.  Then they had to work together to find the number that was half way between and mark it in a special way.  That seemed to be the easy part!  There was a lot of discussion and negotiations to be worked through first but we got there in the end.

The rest of the class were working out number problems and after being given a total to make, they had to find a partner who would help them make that total.  They also had to choose the correct plus or minus sign to go with their sums.
