Soft start with emerging literacy task

We start the day with what we call a soft start activity.  This ties in with emerging literacy and this time we are building towers with Lego. We have a fun activity to start and it helps with our motor skills.

Mrs Inkster times us to see how big our tower with the first go, then we timed again to see if it can be taller on the next turn.  We love it and are always amazed how the tower grows!

Active maths

Part of maths each day is learning through activities or active maths. This can done in many ways.  We are currently learning number at the moment in Primary 1/2. Primary 2 are making a number line to hop along to help with their maths.  Primary 1 are making numbers 1 and 2 with Playdoh.  Then they were making one or two things to go with the number, some of these things were in the book Tiddler by Julia Donaldson.

Stick Man

Stick Man lives in the family tree

With his Stick Lady Love and their family of three.

One day he wakes early and goes for a  jog,

Stick Man, oh Stick Man, beware of the …..

Primary 1/2 have been busy making maps for Stick Man today.  This will help him find his way around and hopefully stop him from being taken and used for other things!

Have a look at our maps

The class worked very well together in pairs and had a great time making a map for Stick Man, remembering all the things he had to try and avoid so that he got back to The Family Tree at the end of his jog!

Busy, busy, busy

My goodness, week 1 has nearly finished and oh my, Primary 1/2 have been busy bees!

Construction – the children weren’t very sure what to make but eventually they decided to build a house.  Here is the progress.

Elska decided to take on the challenge of a clock jigsaw.  When she was finished, she wanted to show the time that was actually on the clock.

Finding out information is a good thing, Thea was keen to find out about space.

Developing our language and working together to play has been a big part of getting used to our new class.  Here are some photos showing that.

Then there is our creative side!

Ready to Rock and Roll

We are all set to welcome Primary 1/2 ready for a new school year.  Here are some photos of our breakout space ready for the soft start.  I look forward to hearing all about the summer.

These areas will change frequently as we go with the children and their learning, topics and interests.  Keep your eyes on the blog for updates.
