The Dragon of the Western Sea

Pupils in P5 and P6 entertained their peers and family and friends today as they performed alongside Scottish Opera.

Thanks to Miss Simpson the  pupils had learned all the words of the songs prior to this morning and in just 1hr and 40 mins the show was pulled together.

Everyone did an amazing job and the pupils worked so hard.  They all had so much fun.

Special thanks to Scottish Opera and to Noelle Henderson who funded this opportunity through YMI funding.

Interview with Guiser Jarl

Pupils in P7n and P7s had an opportunity today to interview this year’s Guiser Jarl for Lerwick Up Helly Aa, Stewart Jamieson, along with his son, Haydn. Pupils in these classes have been planning the interview since we came back after the Christmas holidays, thinking carefully about the difference between open and closed questions. Stewart took in the helmet, shield and axe he wore and carried when he was in the Junior Jarl Squad as a young boy. The pupils really enjoyed asking him questions and it gave them a real insight into what is involved in becoming Jarl as well as the build up to Up Helly Aa day at the end of January. We wished Stewart and Haydn all the best for the big day with three cheers at the end of the interview.

Christmas Assembly

Our Christmas Assembly was held at the Methodist Church this morning. Thanks to Rev Fox for making us feel so welcome and to everyone for the beautiful musical items, which were so lovely that we want to share them with family and friends.

Bell’s Brae Choir

The Bell’s Brae Choir members from P5-7 entertained family, friends and members of the community in a packed Boats Hall at the Shetland Museum and Archives on Saturday.

The young performers sang a number of Christmas songs – some old and some new.  The choir members, who have been practicing hard in school and after school, sang beautifully.

The audience were also entertained with some fiddle music from Amber Thomson and Cameron Johnston who were both finalists in the Young Fiddler Competition early this year.

Hip Hop Workshop

First day back after the October holidays and our P7 pupils were treated to a Hip Hop Workshop.

Organised by Shetlandarts Room 2 Manoeuvre’s are visiting Shetland with their ‘Without a Hitch’ hip hop dance theatre production. As part of this a 50 minute workshop was offered to our P7 pupils.

The pupils were guided through Hip Hop dance techniques, improvisation, partner work and choreography by Artistic Director Tony Mills.    We couldn’t believe how well they all did after a short workshop.

The performance ‘Without a Hitch’ is showing at the Garrison Theatre on Thursday 26 October at 7.30pm for anyone wishing to see more.
