With Up Helly Aa season firmly underway in Shetland the boys and girls at Bell’s Brae had their own ‘hop’. This followed a block of traditional dancing taught by Mrs Redfern and the class teachers. All pupils and staff had great fun!

On Tuesday, Primary 1 enjoyed their ‘Teddy Bears’ Picnic’ as part of their ‘Toys’ topic.
As it was Pancake Day, we enjoyed making and eating pancakes for our picnic. So did our teddies!
Primary One continue to enjoy their weekly “social snack”.
We take turns preparing the snack by spreading, grating, mixing, cutting, rolling and slicing different food items.
We like to talk about what we are eating; discussing foods we like and foods we are not so sure about. Eating a snack together encourages us to ‘try’ different foods we maybe haven’t tried before.
Today, we made Valentine’s cakes 🙂
Every Friday, 1 pupil from each Primary 1 class take time to prepare a snack for all P1 pupils. We call it our social snack as we enjoy taking time to eat and talk about our snack together. Each class brainstormed suggestions for what we could make.
We made scones this week – they were delicious!
Primary 5 have been learning all about Space this term. As part of this, we looked at the Moon Landing by Apollo 11. They were set the challenge to work in pairs in order to create their own lunar landing module using only the materials provided.
They had to think carefully about their design to make sure their astronauts (big marshmallows!) didn’t fall out of the module when dropped from a height of 30cm. Some managed to drop their module successfully from a height of 2m!!
It was excellent to see such brilliant problem solving and a range of other maths skills from all of the pupils.
On Thursday we welcomed families to our Learner Led Event. Learner Led Events are a chance for your child(ren) to share their learning with you.
Our pupils enjoyed showing their families around the school and sharing their learning with them.
Representatives from various other agencies were available in our school canteen, these included our Parent Council, the School Nurse and Active Schools. The School Meal’s Service provided taster school lunches for families to try and this was very popular.
Our topic is water and today we went to the Museum to learn how people washed their clothes long ago.
We pretended we were in the olden days and used a washboard, brush, soap and dolly to wash the Museum’s dirty tea towels 🙂 What a fun we had!
We have been learning all about water. Today we were scientists, investigating ‘floating’ and ‘sinking’ through different experiments.
We made predictions on whether or not everyday classroom items would float or sink and tested them in water to see if we were right.
In pairs, we constructed our own tinfoil boats and watched to see if they would float. We even added weight on to the boats to see if they could stand up to the test! We loved being scientists for the morning. 🙂
We are so proud of our Primary Netball team who were awarded the Sportsmanship Award as part of the Shetland Primary Netball League. The girls have taken part in a number of matches against teams from all over Shetland and have been great representatives of Bell’s Brae.
Here they are at training on Monday accepting their certificates and trophy! 🙂
Over the last few weeks we have been learning all about number bonds in Primary 1s. We have been learning all the number bonds that make the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Lots of practical work using cubes and counters have helped these bonds to become familiar.
