Edinburgh Trip – Day 2

Today began with a great walk to the Edinburgh Castle.  It has stayed nice and dry for us all day.  We enjoyed a walk around the castle before heading to Camera Obscura, where we had lots of fun!

After lunch we set off for Laser Quest, where everyone showed their competitive side.  Mr Sandison was the winner!

We ate in Mr Basari’s, probably over indulging again!  The more competitive games at Ten Pin Bowling. It was lovely to watch everyone having so much fun 🙂

After a quick shot at the amusements we headed back to the Hostel for a wash and an early bed before a 0700 start tomorrow.

Edinburgh Trip- Day 1

Monday 10 June was a busy day. After arriving safely in Aberdeen we headed for Blair Drummond. We enjoyed beautiful sunshine while the pupils had fun playing and viewing the different animals.

After the sea lion show and a quick bite to eat we headed for the Birds of Prey Show. Unfortunately this was cut short due to rain and the ray did not seem to want to stop!

We arrived safely at the hostel and after settling in we headed to Cosmos for a huge feed!!

We rounded off our night with a walk to the top of Carlton Hill.

All our young people have had a great night’s  sleep and are now all set for day 2

P4 Visit to Sumburgh Head Nature Reserve

Primary 4 classes visited Sumburgh Head Nature Reserve to find out more about our topic, Living Things.  We have been classifying animals and researching wildlife in our local environment so we were lucky to be offered a tour with staff from RSPB as well as the nature reserve. Despite a very wet day, we all had great fun and learned so much more about wildlife around Shetland.

We used binoculars and telescopes to get a close up view of the birds nesting on the cliffs.  We learned about  “pufflings” and “jumplings”!

We visited the Marine Life Centre and found out about sea life around Shetland, food webs and what pollution and climate change is doing to the wildlife.

We made a giant food web!  We were given cards with plankton, fish, birds and sea animals and then we linked together with ropes to see who eats what.  It was great fun! We realised what happens when one of the creatures in the food web is removed.

We were all joined together in our food web.

Thank you very much to Jane and Gary at Sumburgh for showing us so much and giving us a super fun day.

Outside learning for P4

P4 enjoyed some outside learning last week, exploring and identifying the living things around the Clickimin Loch.

Using their identification sheets the children had a great time finding lots of plants and trees we have growing in Shetland, these included primroses, bluebells, buttercups, birch and alder trees. They also heard and saw some insects and birds enjoying the sunshine.
