FAOL Enterprise- Creating Christmas Gifts

We had lots of fun creating Christmas gifts for our families throughout December.

We were effective contributors and sourced the supplies needed for each of our gifts. We then carefully shared out the supplies to ensure that all our peers could create a gift using the resources we had gathered.

25th Jan Art Ideas! :)

Happy Birthday Robert Burns!

I hope you are all safe and well. This week our art focus will be related to Robert Burns. Below are a few ideas that you might want to try at home.

Robert Burns is the National Poet of Scotland. He was born on 25th January 1759 and today would have been his birthday. Burns was born in Alloway, AyrshireScotland. Some of his most famous poems include To A MouseAuld Lang Syne, and Tam o Shanter.

Birthday Card

Woven Thistle Craft!

Use wool or thread to decorate a paper thistle. Blank templates can be printed here. https://coloring.ws/scotland.htm.

  • The Scottish thistle is actually part of the sunflower family. The thistle represents bravery, devotion, durability, strength and determination.
  • Have you ever spotted a real Scottish Thistle? Which two colours do you see? I think the real Scottish Thistle would feel jaggy to touch…best to just look from a distance!

Woven Tartan Hearts

  • Can you make a woven tartan heart? The template can be downloaded here: https://www.firstpalette.com/printable/heart-basket.html
  • Make a few and join them together to create some Robert Burns inspired bunting.

Take care and stay safe,

Mrs. Macdonald

Home Learning Week 3

Hello again Transition class. Another week already! Today is Burns’ Day and I’ve put a wee challenge into this week’s tasks to discover some Burns’ poetry. I know that some of you have read Burns’ poetry before. You can find them again if you like and try and read them aloud.

Here is this week’s Home Learning. Below that is all the verses of the poem Nessie. Have fun imagining trying to spot Nessie. How would you do it? Would you use a disguise? Would you try and hide somewhere? Would you be brave enough to swim in the loch?

Home learning 3

Nessie all verses

If you want you could keep a wee diary of what you have been getting up to during lockdown. I’m excited to see what you’ve all been doing.

Stay healthy and be kind to each other.

Week 3 – Home Learning Challenges

Hi Planets Class! Today is Robert Burns’ birthday 🥳🎈 I thought this week that we could celebrate by doing some Burns themed home learning challenges.

  • Literacy *
Below are two animated clips of some famous Robert Burns poems. Can you listen to them? What one is your favourite?

A Red, Red Rose

Auld Lang Syne song

Can you find some of the Burns themed words hidden in the wordsearch below?

  • Numeracy *
Can you go on a tartan hunt? You might be able to find some tartan in your house, I have a tartan scarf and a tartan skirt that I have found in mine.
Can you create your own tartan using the electronic game below? Maybe you could make a different tartan for each person in your house showing their favourite colours.
    https://houseoftartan.co.uk/interactive/weaver/index.htm

This is Miss Gemmell’s design that I made during the game.

  • Health and Wellbeing *
Can you put your icing skills to the test and create some kilt wearing gingerbread men? We had been using icing pens for some Christmas crafts as part of our ILP targets so this activity ties in nicely.

  • Expressive Arts *
In class, we regularly create some step by step drawings. We find this very calming and relaxing. Normally Miss Gemmell demonstrates step by step on the SMARTboard, however a parent/family member could have their own piece of paper and be demonstrating for you to copy.

Can you draw Robert Burns?

Home Learning – week beg. 25th January

Literacy

Learn about Scotland and living on an island by watching Katie Morag on iPlayer – what episode did you watch? Did you enjoy it?

Have a look at this clip where Katie Morag is playing pooh sticks. Have you played pooh sticks before? Did you like it? When you are on a walk you could have a go and play pooh sticks too. Video – Katie Morag – pooh sticks

Now have some fun doing the Shooglie Wooglie. This a clip from Scottish Book Trust doing the Scottish version of the Hokey Cokey. Have fun and hopefully you learn some Scottish words for different body parts.

Shooglie Wooglie video

Numeracy

Our theme this term is Scottish castles can you use kitchen roll tubes to create castles. Places a different number on each castle you make. Then you can play a game, placing the correct number of straws or pencils inside the numbered castle – you could even add flags to the top of each straw/pencil. Have fun. 😊 You could also get help from someone in your family to draw a castle with a number on it and place the correct number of toys on top on the castle drawing. You could also create a number line. Draw a castle with battlements then use a toy character to count to 10 and back again moving him along the battlements.

Health and Wellbeing

Put on your own mini Highland games in your house.

Toss the caber – use a cardboard tube for this.

Hammer throw – use a cushion and see who can throw it the furthest.

Catch the Haggis – use a bean bag or a sponge or even an orange. How many times can you catch it before it drops?

Art

Have a look online at different tartan designs. Then have a go of making your own tartan. This can be made drawing lines with pencils, pens or crayons. You could even get messy and use paint. Or you could cut or tear paper into strips creating you own design by sticking them to a piece of paper.

Create your own interpretation of a ‘Hairy Haggis’ using anything at all that you can find around the house to reuse or recycle.  This could be old bottle tops, old bits of cloth or clothing, empty packets, wool, cereal, oats, lentils or even leaves and twigs from outside – anything will do! Your ‘Hairy Haggis’ can be made of anything you want!

As always, remember that these activities are all optional and should be fun – not stressful  🙂
