Stars Activities 3

Hello Stars Class. Hope you are all doing well.

Here are some more activities to do should you wish. Adapt them to suit whatever you have available.

Five Senses Treasure Hunt

Find something –

smooth

rough

noisy

round

yellow

that is a plant

that smells

you can eat

red

Pea Head Person                                                                                     1. Cover yogurt pots, paper cups or plant pots with paper and draw a funny face on them.

  1. Fill with compost and sow any seeds you have. Normally you sow peas however cress, grass, flower or vegetable seeds will grow to make a fine head of ‘hair’.

  2. Remember to keep the seeds well watered as they grow and make sure they get plenty of sunlight. They would look good on the kitchen windowsill.

Balloon Tennis                                                                                          Blow up a balloon and use a bat to play tennis with a partner. Don’t worry if you don’t have a bat, just use your hand. Enjoy! This was great fun when we played it in class.

Story                                                                                                                                       We enjoyed ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’ in class but this is Elaine C. Smith reading ‘The Glasgow Gruffalo’.

If the link doesn’t work then go into YouTube and type in The Glasgow Gruffalo Elaine C. Smith. I hope this makes you laugh as much as ‘The Gruffalo in Scots’ did!

Remember, these activities are optional but we would love any comments or photographs of things you’ve done.                                                                                            I will be giving you a quick phone call this week for a catch up.

Have Fun. Stay Safe.

Monday the 4th of May

Happy Star Wars day everyone! I hope that you are all well and still enjoying this good weather. The Transition team will have an exciting video to show you this week. Keep your eyes on the blog! A clue to the subject is that we were meant to look after them in school but Mrs Ramage has her own at home. Answers on a postcard!

A nice free app that I found last week was ‘Seek by iNaturalist’ This New App Will Help You Identify the Plants and Animals You See ...

It can identify things you find in your garden or on your daily exercise. Just point your camera at it. It is very effective for wild flowers. I think it’s really good. Let me know if you find anything exciting or rare.

Below is this weeks suggested activities. Enjoy your short week (holiday Friday!) and let me know how you get on.

Week 2

Stay healthy and be kind to each other.

Let’s Get Busy Oak Team

Well Oak team, here is another week of activities for you all to try out at home.  You are under no obligation to complete, however if you do please leave a comment as we would love to know how you are and if you are enjoying your activities.

I haven’t had any song requests yet, for a new dance.  You must have a favourite song you would like to dance to!

Let’s get started with your activities for the week.

Art:

Shadow Drawing

What do I need? – Chalk, sun and a partner

There has to be more sunshine this week, so get out into the garden.  If you have chalk, choose someone in your family to stand and create their shadow.  With help draw around their shadow and reveal their outline!  If you do not have chalk get some paper, pencil and a toy and draw round the shadow of your chosen toy. Who does this shadow look like?

Lockdown Rainbow

What do I need? – Paint, sticks, paper, paint brushes, (frame is optional)

Again on your daily walk or in your garden can you find more sticks. You could make a stick rainbow picture and put it in a frame as ‘Lockdown’ 2020 keepsake.  I will post a finished picture of ours once it is complete but here it is so far;

Literacy:

Disappearing Words

What do I need? – Chalk, garden hose / squirty bottle and water

Get an adult to write some sight or tricky words on the ground.  The adult will shout out a word and you have to identify the correct word and then use your hose or water bottle to make the words disappear. The words can be names of people in your family, people in school, everyday words that you use or hear (bed, toilet, drink, food, etc)

Numeracy:

Family Bingo

What do I need? – paper, pens, YouTube and your family

If you do not have bingo cards at home, get an adult to put 12 numbers on a piece of paper, (numbers range from 1-90). Get everyone in your family to play, everyone needs a card, then use YouTube bingo caller for the numbers.

Choose a prize before you start the game and see who wins!

Cooking:

Breakfast Meal– What do you like to eat for breakfast? Cereal? Toast? Eggs?

Every morning this week try and get your own breakfast, on Monday you need help from an adult but maybe by Friday you can do most of it by yourself.

Think about what you need, bowl, plate, spoon, knife, bread or milk.

Here are some faces you will recognise, this is what they like for breakfast;

Life Skills:

Each week you will have a different focus, this week we would like you to  concentrate on making your bed.

IDL – Can you look around your house or garden and find things that could make a den / tent.  If you have a tent, put it up in the garden this week and have fun in it.

Music – I hope you are all still singing and signing, each week we will have a different singing hands song to focus on.  Find their videos on Youtube and get the family all taking part. From the singing bag a new song will be revealed each week. This week we are going to be singing, Million Dreams! Have fun!

Class pet update – Butterflies

All five not so little caterpillars are  doing well, they have almost ate all their food now! They are getting so big, I think it may be time for the next stage of their life cycle! They look as though they are about to get comfy, stop eating and hang on the lid to spin themselves into chrysalis. Once they are in this comfy cocoon this is where they transform into beautiful butterflies.  I wonder what colour they will be? Have you made you butterfly pictures and guessed their colour yet? I wonder if anyone will get it right!

Fun in the sun

Hello everyone.

The Sunflower ladies and I are missing you very much and hope you are all well. We have been thinking and are going to post some activities on here for you to try with your family. You don’t need to try every one but if you do could you sent us a photo we would love to see your little faces again.

This week we thought we could all make something with different materials. We all made the beginning letter of our second names. You could do the first letter of your name, your whole name, a face or any design you want. Have fun you can do this indoors or outdoors. You can use any materials you want. I used sticks and flowers from my garden. Most of all have fun and involve all the family. 🙂

Literacy Listening

Everyone today enjoyed taking part in a learning to draw activity through listening to instructions. We started with a letter and following step by step instructions, which turned the letter into an animal.  Everyone was successful learners and actively engaged in the listening task and enjoyed shouting out the animal they had drawn.  Everyone focused their attention when working on letter recognition and reading skills.

Cameron’s drawings are shown below.

In the garden…….at last!

Lots of socks #WDSD – successful learners

Today has been a very different day for some of the children in the Sunflowers class. However we have made the most of the situation. Today is World Down’s Syndrome Day we used some of the spare socks and took a picture of all of us wearing odd socks. We used crayons and stickers to successfully create our own pair of odd socks. We also have a new toy in the Sunflowers class. It is a huge hit. It is a bug that moves faster the noisier we are.  We had lots of fun shouting at the creature to make it move.

Effective Learners during Science Week

Fun with Science continued throughout the week. One experiment that the class all enjoyed was making a Non-Newtonian fluid (cornflour and water!) and discovering its properties. Numeracy skills were put to good use checking the mass and volume of each item. Each boy experienced the fluid and we had a range of way to interact. Some used spoons to stir fast and slow and some put their hands straight in!

The next experiment was making rainbow paper. The boys all interacted well and were patient when they poured clear nail varnish into water. They carefully placed black card on top and removed it to show shimmering rainbow paper.

The class them observed the reaction between a powder and a liquid to form a gas. The boys were amazed when the balloon started to inflate.

Our last task in class was to apply our literacy and numeracy skills to try and replicate the success of Patrick last year at the Engineering Challenge. The boys reflected on the webcast from Monday and came up with some new designs to help solve problems. The challenge included a short letter to explain the design and what influenced each idea. Watch this space to see how well we get on!

World Book Day

The Stars class enjoyed World Book Day with lots of activities. We were effective contributors and made shortbread men alongside the story, ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Some of us were confident individuals as we dressed up on World Book Day and enjoyed the story, ‘The Old Toy Room’. We made story masks and explored a selection of old fashioned toys. We made a cup and ball game and enjoyed books we had brought in to share.

LGBT Month

The Stars class read the book ‘No Matter What’ for LGBT month.  We were all responsible citizens and felt we are all the same no matter what we look like or what our families consist of. We did lots of activities including making rainbow flag cupcakes, rainbow love heart pictures, rainbow hand prints and printed a purple picture of grapes. Our week finished with purple activities in the hall which were great fun.
