Food Bank Donations – Thanks.
Margaret Copp from Dalbeattie and Kirkgunzeon Parish Church would like to the children and families for the kindness and donations from our Harvest Assembly. The staff at the Food Bank were delighted and wish the children to know their contribution will make a huge difference to many families. The number of families accessing food banks is on the increase as food and fuel bills rise, as well as the cost of baby items. Margaret would like to wish pupils and staff a successful second term.

Literacy Fun with P1!
On the last day of term we invited our parents and relatives to come along and play some literacy games and have a go at some activities we do to help us learn our sounds. We began by singing some songs and then we all had a fun time playing! Thank you to everyone for coming and we hope you had as much fun as we did!

Litter Survey
Having moved into their new campus around a year ago Dalbeattie Primary Eco Group is keen to keep it looking clean & tidy. To keep up the standards they have relaunched their litter awareness topic.
Last week the Community Safety Team were out and about on one of their engagement days and visited the primary school.
The Eco Group learned about litter and it effect on their local community. They surveyed their school grounds for litter and found some: mostly sweets and crisp packets. It was actually quiet tidy. However, the process was good for the children to understand the type of survey sheets which can be used to grade the appearance of an area in terms of litter.
These type of surveys are carried out three times a year by Keep Scotland Beautiful and determines how clean our roads and streets are compared to other local authority areas in Scotland.
The children learned that litter, especially those plastic in nature often finds its way into a watercourse and end up in the sea, often having a devastating effect on sea creatures.
At their old school, they were often plagued by dog fouling, but with having a secure playground now, they no longer have this issue.
The Eco Group believe that we all need to work together to keep our area clean & tidy.
Harvest Assembly
Today we held our Harvest Assembly. Pupils were thanked and congratulated on the fantastic donations provided for the Harvest Hampers. Mrs Duncan also created a Harvest Rainbow in the the hall with the help of some pupils and colourful fruit. The children certainly demonstrated their vast knowledge of different colours of fruit.
Miss Copp and Mr Sanderson collected the Harvest Hampers on behalf of Dalbeattie and Kirkgunzeon Parish Church and will give our donations to the local Food Bank.
As well as all things Harvest, there were several awards to hand out today.
Jamie and Abbie with presented with their Junior Road Safety Officer Kits.
The P7 Soccer 7’s Team and Harris were presented with their Head Teacher’s Awards as they will be busy tomorrow afternoon during our usual awards time.
Prizes were also presented on behalf of the local EIS who held a poster competition last term to create a poster to welcome Refugees to Scotland. We had the overall winner and two runners up her at Dalbeattie Primary. Well done to Cara, Willow and Caleb.

Primary Three Woodland Walk
As part of our topic, and to link in with our topic maths this term, P3 adventured up Rounall Wood again. It was a glorious day and we wished we had left our jackets in school, however we never can tell with the ever-changing weather. Ailsa even gave a ladybird a lift on the way up!
After finding a spot to stop and have snack, we learned a little of the history of the wood. We were then given a right angle challenge, where we had to use sticks to make a shape/design which contained lots of right angles. We also looked at all of the angles round about us and discussed if they were bigger or smaller than right angles.
We then grabbed our collecting jars with magnified lids and we carefully collected some of the different mini-beasts found in the wood. We got some spiders, worms, woodlice and other little creepy crawlies.
On the way to the bog and pond area we looked at the signs of danger which related to the steep sides from the quarry. Once at the pond, we were given ‘no salt dough’ to make some funny faces using the nature from all around in the woods. We discussed why it was no salt dough, and that although we were not leaving it in the woods, salty dough would not be very kind to the animals if they were to eat it.
Finally, before heading home, we were given a compass (in pairs) as we have been learning about compass points. Although we found it quite tricky to get the hang of using, we were able to see the compass points and find North, South, East and West.
Mrs Wixon had the added bonus of having Mrs McConnell, Bryony and Kerry to help with the activities on the day. Thank you ladies, and thank you to the very well behaved P3 class!

Primary Six Soccer Sevens
Well done to the Primary Six Soccer Sevens team today who participated in the DGSFA Soccer Sevens tournament at Palmerston Arena. The team won two of their games and lost two games. The team played well together supporting and encouraging each other throughout the games. Sporting attitudes were very good throughout the tournament.
