We have had a fantastic day in school celebrating World Book Day. A great number of our pupils came dressed as a character from a favourite book and brought along a copy to share with their classmates. The costumes were terrific, as you will see from the pictures. We are also very grateful, this year, to Dalbeattie Book Shop whose donation of many books has meant that we could allow each pupil to select a free book from previous years of World Book Day publications. The children have also been given their World Book Day 2017 tokens which can be exchanged either for a free 2017 World Book Day or can be used as £1 towards any book or audio book over £2.99.

Promoting Fairtrade
At Dalbeattie Primary School, we are continuing in our work to promote Fairtrade. A representative from Kirkcudbright Fairtrade Group, Mrs Van Zwanenberg, spoke at our whole school assembly about how we can help others by choosing to buy Fairtrade products like Fairtrade bananas. Primary 5D pupils explored the items in her shopping basket by finding out where the Fairtrade ingredients came from. They also watched a short film and discussed the benefits of Fairtrade. At assembly, Primary 5D pupils performed a short play to introduce the theme of a Fairtrade Break which the class will run next week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, P5D pupils will run a Fairtrade Tuck Shop offering toast with Fairtrade strawberry jam, Fairtrade biscuits and Fairtrade bananas. We appreciate all support in raising awareness of Fairtrade and involvement in our Fairtrade Break event.
Salmon in the Classroom
We are really excited again this year to participate in the Salmon in the Classroom project with Galloway Fisheries Trust. Rowan spoke to Primary 5 pupils and the Eco Committee about the lifecycle of the Atlantic Salmon and threats to their survival. We are so excited to have our tank set up with about 100 salmon eggs inside.
Scots Poetry Judging
The class Scots Poetry competitions were judged today. All class teachers judged different classes throughout the school. This was not an easy job but they all thoroughly enjoyed their morning. The standards were very high and children once again have put a fantastic amount of effort into learning and reciting their poems. The winners from each class will perform their poems next week at assembly. Photos to follow.

Final Events
Dalbeattie Primary Final Events
To mark the final months in our current building we will be hosting two events to mark and recognise the history of Dalbeattie Primary school on its current site.
On Saturday 20th May, there will be one final doors open day which will take place in both the upper and lower school buildings. Visitors are welcome to visit Dalbeattie Primary School to reminisce, share memories and view the school as it is today. Doors will open at 10a.m and close at 3p.m . At 12 mid-day, we would like as many people as possible who have been pupils and staff at Dalbeattie Primary School (or indeed, the High School pre 1958) to join us in front of the bell tower for a large group photograph to mark the event. It may even get us into the Record books for the most former pupils and staff in a picture SO KEEP THE DATE! However, all friends, members of the school and wider local community are welcome to visit the buildings at any point during the day.
Our second event is for current and former staff. We will also be hosting an afternoon tea for former staff (teaching and non-teaching) on Wednesday 7th June 3:30-5pm. The event is a social gathering to welcome former staff to the school for one final look round the old granite buildings before we progress to our new learning campus in October 2017. Any former staff interested in joining current staff for the this event should contact the school office either by phone or email – 01556611597 or gw08officedalbeatti2@ea.dumgal.sch.uk

Consultation on Existing Primary School
Recently, pupils have been taking part in a consultation about possible future uses of our current school site. School Pupil Councillors collated the information from written questionnaire sheets, which were filled in by children of all ages though-out the school. The School Pupil Council then met with Michelle McRobert of Dalbeattie Community Initiative to discuss some of the issues in more detail. Lots of ideas were taken aware from the meeting……
School Badge
Today at assembly the four finalists of our school badge competition were announced. Badge designs were shared with staff and children. Pupils have now been asked to vote on their preferred design that will become our new school badge as we move to our new learning campus. Thank you to all pupils who took time to design badges for the competition and well done to our four finalists.
