On the Road to Rio!

Tarbert PS Road to Rio 1Pupils in Primary 7/6 at Tarbert Academy have taken up the Team GB challenge of running the distance to Rio de Janeiro (9450 km from Tarbert) before the Olympic Games there next summer. Running three mornings a week, counting distances run in PE lessons and they are nearly 5% of the way there! After four weeks of running pupils have noticed a definite improvement in their fitness and are enjoying running as a great start to their day.

DGS Learning Centre Sponsored Walk

dgslearningcentresponsoredwalk12On Thursday 3rd of September all the learning centre pupils from Dunoon Grammar went on a sponsored walk. Pupils and staff set of from School down Kirn Brae, along the front all the way to Bullwood Nature Trail, near Innellan. Some senior pupils supported the younger pupils, keeping them safe and happy as part of their youth Achievement Award.

Luss – Grow to Sell

Luss PS Grow to SellThe children at Luss went along to Waitrose on Wednesday this week to sell the produce they have grown through the summer for the ”Grow to Sell” Project in conjunction with Waitrose. This was a feature of their work last year which resulted in a 6th Green Flag and a 4th Total Green Award.

New Trim Trail for St. Joseph’s!

St Josephs TRIM TRAIL 1Monday 07 September was a day of great celebration at St. Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh. Thanks to the generosity of ‘Awards for All Scotland’, the school has just installed a brand new trim trail in the senior playground. The total cost of the work to date is slightly in excess of £11,500, £10,000 of which was given by the ‘Awards for All Scotland’ grant.

Pencil Cases for Nepal

Taynuilt nepal pencil casesJenna (P3), Aaron (P1) and Owen (Nursery)’s Uncle Matt was in Nepal during the recent Earthquake. He has been back in the UK speaking and fundraising to help the people of Nepal rebuild their country and he asked Taynuilt Primary to help the children of a school similar size to ours. Many schools were destroyed by the quake and everything was lost. They are trying to restart the schools but have no equipment at all.

Minard’s annual Duck Derby is a great success!

Minard and Furnace children at the Duck DerbyMinard held their annual Duck Derby on Friday the 29th. Thankfully the weather held while the races were on. There were 17 races with 20 ducks per race. The winners of each race then took part in the grand final! The prize, lunch for two at the George Hotel, was won by Heather Miller and the runner-up was Adam Barclay. He won a £30 voucher for Dewars store in Inveraray.

Furnace children joined them for the afternoon.

Park Primary 7s Scoop Enterprise Award

Park PS Enterprise Award 1Last term, as part of a whole-school enterprise overarching theme, Primary 7s at Park decided to enter the Blythswood Challenge, for the second year running. This enterprise challenge gives a £20 starter fund and 4 weeks to make it grow. The class decided to organise fundraising activities and settled on a Cutest Pet Competition, a Parent/Child Netball Tournament, Lunchtime Challenges, a Sponsored ‘Stay Awake’ and they also sold items on eBay. In total, these activities raised a staggering £1067.15!

Dunoon Primary School Choir wow the crowds at Daffodil Tea!

DPS Daffodil Tea 1st May 2015 2Dunoon Primary School hosted their Annual Daffodil Tea on Tuesday 28th April. The Choir sang a selection of their favourite songs. The afternoon show was well attended by Senior Citizens from our local Community and the children presented a well rehearsed selection of songs e.g. Skyscraper Wean, Under the Sea and Colours of the Wind. The varied song choices and actions to the songs gave the delighted audience ‘the wow factor’.

The BarrowBand

Ardrishaig PS BarrowbandDid you know broccoli comes from Italy? Or that carrots came from Afghanistan? Primary 1-4 pupils in the Mid Argyll area learned these and many other interesting facts about fruit and vegetables thanks to The BarrowBand. The BarrowBand’s goal is to ‘inspire a new generation of people (especially children) to love, understand and demand fruit and vegetables as part of their diet and lives.

Easter benefit for SCIAF at St. Joseph’s!

St Joes Easter 1The generous pupils at St. Joseph’s managed to raise £330 for their nominated Lenten charity SCIAF this week. Staff bought prizes for a children’s raffle with all proceeds intended for a charity close to the hearts of the whole school family: The Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund. With the government’s pledge to double any donations to SCIAF before May 2015, these funds are now guaranteed to mean a £660 donation for the charity.

Spring Tea at Garelochhead PS

Garelochhead PS Spring Tea1Yesterday, families and friends of Garelochhead PS were treated to tea, coffee and biscuits to celebrate the start of British summer time. Lots of people turned up and were entertained during the event with songs from all the classes and an Easter ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ created by P7. Although the winner didn’t get a million pounds, they did receive some homemade Millionaire’s shortbread.

Wonderful Oscar’s Evening at Furnace!

Furnace oscar's evening 1Furnace village hall was visited by some glittering film stars in the evening of Friday the 27th of March.

They arrived in style too, by Limousine!! This was a huge surprise to the children as the local youth club had arranged it and thankfully the parents had kept it a secret.

Our Pupil Council organised a ‘Bedtime Story Day’ to mark World Book Day. We wore our pyjamas and brought in books to have a book sale. We raised £88.50 to buy new books for our school.

‘Red Nose Day’ Comic Relief Fundraising at Dalintober PS

Dalintober PS red nose day SAL 1Pupils, staff and parents of Dalintober PS gave their full support to the school’s fundraising efforts for Comic Relief. Red Noses were sold by P7’s and pupils and staff paid a small donation to wear non-uniform and to ‘make their faces funny for money’. Other fundraisers included a Pre-5/P1 Bake Sale, quiz and various stalls/competitions. A grand total of £775.31was raised for the charity – thank you!

Rothesay Joint Campus raise £1320.62 for Comic Relief

RJC Red Nose Day 13Everyone at Rothesay Joint Campus took part in a host of events on Friday to raise money for Red Nose Day. In the Primary, P6-7 and P7 organised various activities including ‘red nose and spoon’ races, beat the goalie, face painting, hair/nail salon, dress-up karaoke, cupcake decorating, ‘red nose’ treasure hunts, sponge the teacher and a power hoop challenge. Red noses were sold throughout the school.

Arctic Activities for Strone Primary School

strone PS  Polar DayThis term pupils at Strone Primary are studying Polar Regions as their Interdisciplinary Topic. As part of the experience they celebrated International Polar Bear Day! To help raise awareness of the effects of Global Warming and make a small difference to saving energy, the heating was turned down and children came to school dressed for a Polar Day, in fleeces and polar onesies.

Comic Relief at Bowmore!

Bowmore comic relief 2015 newThere was a very relaxed feeling about Bowmore Primary today as children and staff supported Comic Relief by dressing down and wearing funny faces! There were quite a few red noses going about and for once, it wasn’t down to the cold! Onsies, princess dresses, pyjamas and hoodies were part of our special ‘uniform’ today as well as some crazily painted faces. We managed to raise lots of smiles as well as £234.00!
A huge thank you goes out to our parents and friends for supporting Comic Relief through our school. Well done Bowmore!

Fairtrade Coffee Morning

Port Charlotte Fair Trade Coffee Morning (19)On Friday the 6th of March we had a coffee morning to raise money for Fairtrade. All week, each class have been learning about Fairtrade so that we would know what Fairtrade is all about. P1/2 went down to the Co-op to hunt for Fairtrade products and P3/4 studied the journey of a banana. P5/6 wrote a persuasive piece text encouraging others for or against supporting Fairtrade and P6/7 made a Fairtrade cookbook. Every class also baked a cake using Fairtrade products.

Lismore Primary School Celebrity Cook Book

Lismore Celebrity Cook Book 1Lismore Primary School P5-P7 have just completed this term’s enterprise project holding a book launch for their Celebrity Cook Book with a Fairtrade Café on Friday 6th March. This is their report:
We decided to make and sell a recipe book to raise money for our Stramash Week at the end of May. The project started at the beginning of this term and we did it on Mondays and Fridays with Hazel, our classroom assistant.

Chick, Chick, Chick!

Rosneath chick 1Primary one pupils at Rosneath Primary School have been lucky to have the Living Eggs experience in their classroom. The children watched 9 fluffy little chicks hatch and cared for them for over a week. An amazing experience that we would highly recommend!
In order to fund this Miss McLean and Primary 1 organised a Toy and Cake Sale for pupils, staff, families and friends. A fantastic total of £250 was raised!
