Kilnartin jogging 4The children in P5-7 at Kilmartin P.S. are beginning to enjoy the benefits of running a daily mile first thing every morning. The class heads out with their teacher and carry out a few warm-up stretches before heading along the Coach Road that runs from the school to the village.

Small Schools Football Festival

Strachur PS Football FestOn Thursday 5th November Active Schools in partnership with Strachur Primary School ran a football festival for P4 and P5 pupils from the smaller primary schools within Cowal, at Strachur Park. The event was well attended with teams from Strachur, Strone, Tighnabruaich, Lochgoilhead and Kilmodan Primary Schools. The competition was based on a round robin with all the teams playing each other. The pupils were all very excited as for many this would be their first competitive football playing against other schools.

On the Road to Rio!

Tarbert PS Road to Rio 1Pupils in Primary 7/6 at Tarbert Academy have taken up the Team GB challenge of running the distance to Rio de Janeiro (9450 km from Tarbert) before the Olympic Games there next summer. Running three mornings a week, counting distances run in PE lessons and they are nearly 5% of the way there! After four weeks of running pupils have noticed a definite improvement in their fitness and are enjoying running as a great start to their day.

dgsadvancedhighergermanworkexperiencetripEarly on Saturday 12th September, Ruby Brown, Caitlyn Meaney, Chloe Macdonald and Calum MacKinnon set off for Schwarzenbach an der Saale in Germany with their teacher Mrs Clark to undertake work experience. Ruby and Caitlyn worked for Sandler AG, a company which makes textiles, Chloe worked in a Nursery and Calum spent his three days working for an Architect.

As part of our local history study and Crofting Connections programme, Sandbank GMU 6/7 worked on their handcraft skills to complete a piece of textile art together. We took the inspiration of a croft as the basis for a wall hanging, seeing as we had researched an abandoned farm settlement near Loch Eck.

JLB Health Week 4 FunkyJohn Logie Baird Primary School children and staff took part in a variety of fun activities, to celebrate Health Week. The children’s activities included a presentation from SSPCA, Tae Kwon Do, Fruit demonstration and tasting by Waitrose, Big Pedal Cycling and Scooter event, the school sports day and nursery sports day, cardio tennis, rugby, mini kickers. Julie Smith of Funky Fitness put both children and staff through their paces with an energetic and fun filled day of fitness on the Friday to end the week in style.

John Logie Baird Touch Ruby Winners

JLB Rubgy WinnersPrimary 4 children across Helensburgh and Lomond have been taking part in a Touch Rugby training programme through Active Schools this term. All schools entered a competition within this programme to link the number of passes they could do without dropping the ball.

John Logie Baird Primary are delighted to have won this competetion with 25 passes. Here they are being presented with the winner’s cup by Adam from Active Schools.

RAC RPS Beauty and the beast 2Rothesay Primary and Academy came together in a fantastic production of Beauty and the Beast. Rehearsals began early this year. With performances on 16th 17th and 18th of June. Pupils and staff planned , prepared and performed together under the directorship of Primary teacher Julie Henry. Thanks go to all who helped, Art and Technical departments among many more.

Tesco Football Fanatics!

RPS Tesco FootballThe pupils in Primary 1, 2 and 3 at Rothesay Primary are football fanatics after six weeks of training and skills development through the SFA and the Tesco Bank Football Challenge. Martin Rae was very pleased with how the boys and girls worked across the sessions and the support he had from all the staff. Rothesay Primary thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and would like to thank Martin for organising a local Festival of Football for us as a finale to the whole experience. Six lucky players also had their footballing dreams come true when they got surprise tickets to the Scottish Cup Final!

DPS Guitar 2Primary 6 and Primary 7 were treated to learning about the bass guitar from a former Dunoon Primary pupil Phillip Stewart! Phillip has been busy studying for an Honours Degree in Professional Musicianship at the British & Irish Modern Music Institute.
Phillip explained to the class how the bass guitar is built and the importance of a bass guitar in a band. He also told the class how he began his musical journey. Some were surprised to hear that it actually began in Dunoon Primary School playing the chanter with Mr Campbell!

DPS Vocal Workshops 1P3, P4 and our Pre 5 pupils were delighted to take part in a Vocal Workshop, organised and led by Miss McChesney, music teacher from Dunoon Grammar School and some of her fantastic pupils! The children learned some new songs, harmonised in groups with actions and dance moves. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. What a wonderful way to improve and add to their performance skills. An excellent opportunity to work in co-operation with enthusiastic and supportive secondary school pupils. Ardrishaig PS BarrowbandDid you know broccoli comes from Italy? Or that carrots came from Afghanistan? Primary 1-4 pupils in the Mid Argyll area learned these and many other interesting facts about fruit and vegetables thanks to The BarrowBand. The BarrowBand’s goal is to ‘inspire a new generation of people (especially children) to love, understand and demand fruit and vegetables as part of their diet and lives.

Rosneath Crosss Country 1Rosneath Primary took part in the above event with other Helensburgh & Lomond Primary Schools on Thursday 23rd April. What a glorious morning! Ideal weather, ideal terrain under foot, lots of enthusiastic Runners.
All personal goals achieved and the Finish Line crossed!

We held our very own Book Week. This involved writing book reviews, class talks about our favourite books and dressing up as our favourite book characters. We also had parents come in to read to us. John McCallum from the Campbeltown Courier came to our school to talk about his job. We asked lots of questions and found out lots of information about being a journalist.

Tobermory Drama Festival Winners

Lochdon Drama 1At the end of January, Ms Bidwell asked the school if anyone would be interested in doing Tobermory Drama Festival this year. Lochdonhead volunteered and decided to write a play called ‘Our Teacher’s a Witch’. We formed a drama club and we rehearsed every Thursday night for 2 months. We also gave up some of our breaks and lunchtimes to practice as well.

Small Isles Crofting Connections 1In 2012 our school joined the Crofting Connections project and as part of that, we were given a loom. We did lots of work around weaving and even went to collect some lichens to dye our own wool. Then we used the loom to weave a piece of fabric that was green and white and rather rough. Fiona Macdonald (a good weaver that lives close to school) helped us to set it up. Then we decided to have a competition to see who could design the best tartan.
