Primary 6 27.10.17

We hope everyone enjoyed their October holiday and the stormy weather did not disrupt too many plans.

The children have been working hard this week. In writing they wrote all about their October holiday and what they had been doing. The skills we focused on were correct spelling, starting each sentence with a different word and including adjectives. The children then peer assessed their partner’s story and provided feedback.

We have completed our Topic on the Industrial Revolution and have started Europe. The children will be creating non-fiction books on a European country in the coming weeks. We are excited to learn lots of new facts about our European neighbours.

In Reading we have finished our novel and the children shared a range of emotions about how the story ended. Lots of great discussion took place. Next week the children will be writing a book review about the novel.

After school clubs have started this week. Thank you to all children who have signed up already. There are still spaces in many of the clubs so please ask for an application form if your child is interested in joining a club.

Entrepreneurial juices were flowing this week at our Invention Showcase! The event was a great success due to the hard work of Primary Six. We had many original product ideas, which demonstrated ingenuity, creativity and problem solving skills.

Equally impressive was the quality of the presentations given by the pupils and their enthusiasm for the event has to be admired. Well done Primary Six! Thank you to all our visitors, we are sure you will agree that we have some future Dragons’ Den candidates.

We have completed our first Parents Evening sessions of the year and would like to thank you all for your continued support.

Our classes have been full of interesting invention chats this week! We are all getting very excited for the inventions show case. Parents and carers are very welcome to view our inventions on Wednesday 11th October from 2pm until 3pm or on Thursday 12th October from 10am until 11am. Please be aware that other classes in the school may be visiting at these times.

In preparation for our trip to New Lanark on Tuesday 3rd October, we have been learning about Robert Owen and in particular his influence on changing the lives of working class people for the better. The children have indicated that they still prefer coming to school to working in a mill!

In Writing the children have used their imaginations this week to create their own versions of the poem The Magic Box by Kit Wright. Various writing techniques were adopted to develop ideas and the results have been outstanding. Such emotional writing Primary Six! You will have an opportunity to read these on Parent’s Evening.

The children have been working hard in PE with Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday, training for the Cross Country event. Many of the children are showing a talent for running.

The children also participated in a handball taster session on Monday where they were introduced to some of the skills needed to participate in a game.

Having discussed how difficult life was for working class children in the Victorian era, our pupils have decided that doing their chores and completing homework are not that bad after all! One pupil described feeling very lucky and this seemed to be the general consensus throughout primary six ………….perhaps we should increase chores and homework!!

We have been exploring all aspects of Victorian working conditions, particularly focusing on child labour. The pupils have been analysing different sources of information from this time period and discussing which improvements in working laws genuinely helped protect children from such harsh conditions.

The children have been working hard practising for the cross country event and those who have decided not to take part will be attending the event acting as our roaming sports reporters.

Invention ideas are starting to fly around our classrooms, remember the inventor challenge homework is due on Friday 6th October.

Hello,
Yet another busy week in Primary 6, classroom routines are already well established and timetables are underway.

We sent home fact families maths sheets this week. Please keep these at home and use them as a guide to practise times tables and the relationship between multiplication and division. We have shown the pupils a variety of times tables songs available on You Tube. We encourage the pupils to use these at home but strictly with Parent permission!

Our topic this term is the Industrial Revolution and we introduced this to the boys and girls using a clip from the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony as it clearly depicts the change from an agricultural land to one of heavy industry. We are organising a trip to New Lanark and will send home details very soon.

Mr Bruce, one of our music specialists, will be giving the children the opportunity to audition for chanter lessons next week. If your child is interested please discuss this with them as it would mean time out of class if they begin lessons and a lot of practice at home.

Primary 2/3 5.9.17

Primary 2/3 have started their topic about Puppets. We have been investigating different types of puppets and identified some well known puppets like Pinocchio, Muppets and Sooty and Sweep! In the up coming weeks we will be making some of our very own puppets.

In Maths, Primary 2 have been focusing on number lines and Primary 3 have been working on addition up to 30 using the 100 square. Maths homework will be sent home today.

Reading books will be sent home today, along with some common words that need to be practised this week. All homework instructions will be found in the children’s homework diaries. Primary 3 will also have spelling words to complete.

We have had a busy second week of term and primary six are quickly establishing their routines and responsibilities as senior pupils of our school. Our class discussions have centred on the principles of SHANARRI and in particular we have focused on respect. We have created some excellent images showing where respect can be found within our school. Primary Six are sending out a clear message to the rest of the school ….”You give it to me and I give it to you, RESPECT”. The next time you visit our small hall, please have a look at our display.
We will be issuing spelling homework next week. Pupils will be given twelve words relating to a specific rule or sound on Monday. They will be expected to complete a spelling activity of their choice and sentences using some of their spelling words . The spelling homework is due on Friday and they will also complete a weekly spelling test.
We have started our class novel and the engagement of the pupils so far has been so positive that the main character has become an extra member of our class! We have started our library visits and the pupils will be given regular opportunities to exchange books.

Primary 4 3.2.17

This week we have been working hard in our assessment jotters to show our abilities across the curriculum. These will be in pupil trays this week at Parents’ Evening, and hopefully you will be able to see the progress your child has made between October and January.

We have started to look at electricity in Science. We are looking forward to building our own circuits and making different components work using batteries and wires. This week, we began by looking at electrical safety. The children’s knowledge on this was good and we had an excellent discussion. One thing we need to investigate is how birds can touch electricity wires without being electrocuted.

Next Monday, you will see your child’s spelling words and format changing. Children will still receive spelling words to be studied at home, however these will be based on a different sound each week.

This sound should be learned, and words should be written out across the page in look, cover, write and check format as normal. Activities will be expected to be completed alongside twice a week. This will show the children’s ability to transfer their understanding of the words, and knowledge of the spelling rule.

As of next Tuesday for four weeks, P4S will have another session of indoor PE on a Tuesday. Please ensure children have kit on this day. Reminders will be written in homework jotters.

Parents’ Evenings take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both primary 4 classes currently have student teachers. The student teachers will be in the room during the parent consultations in order to learn from them. Hello to Everyone,

It has been another busy week in P7.

The children have been working hard learning their Burns poems. Nearly everyone has learned the words and they are now adding in expression and actions where appropriate. It would be appreciated if you could also help your child with this. The children will be reciting their poem in class on Wednesday or Thursday next week and the 2 children who get the most votes will represent their class at the school Burns Competition. Good Luck to everyone!

We have started our World War 2 topic and the children have lots of questions. If you have any memorabilia that we could show the children this would help bring the topic to life. Even better if you know anyone who would be willing to speak to the children about their experiences please let us know.

We had a very successful visit to the Risk Factory on Tuesday. The children learned strategies to keep them safe in a variety of scenarios. The children will be creating safety leaflets about this in writing next week.

Auditions have been taking place for our show ‘Alice The Musical’. All children will find out what part they have been allocated next Wednesday. To make the show a success we need all children to attend both the afternoon and evening performances. If they are unable to attend in the evening please give us plenty of notice about this so we can adjust their part accordingly as it is unfair to expect other children to stand in at the last minute.

My Life So Far is not being worked on in school this term so the children will need to work on it at home. First draft of the project to be handed in Friday 31st March 2017.

Primary 3 News! 14.11.16

What a busy week we had last week!

In Maths we are really getting to grips with subtraction, taking away 9, 19, 29 and 11, 21, 31 and looking at strategies we can use. We also revisited the 2x tables so keep practising these at home!

In preparation for our Erasmus + visitors we made some Scottish gifts, a bookmark with a felt covered kilted man to show off our traditional dress. We also located on a map the six different countries and found out about their traditions, local food and monuments.

We are really getting into our Nativity rehearsals and parts will be given this week so we would really appreciate your support with line learning at home as the time is flying in! We will organise props and costumes this week and will let you know what your child needs to bring in from home. It is an all singing, all dancing show so all children will be involved whether they are speaking, dancing or singing.

Massive thank you to those mums that assisted us in the woods today, although a little muddy at the entrance it was a great woodland walk and gave the children lots of descriptive ideas for their writing tomorrow!

Primary 7 04.11.16

Hello to all,

We had a visit from West Lothian drug and Alcohol Services on Monday where the children learned about the dangers of smoking. The children were given a task to research some of the different chemicals found in cigarettes which will be used in their lesson next week.

The children have started a Remembrance challenge. They have been learning about how different countries commemorate Remembrance and the significance of poppies and war memorials. The children have put a lot of effort into their challenge and we look forward to seeing the completed displays!

On Tuesday Primary 7 went to DCHS for a transition morning where they got to experience a range of lessons including PE, Art, Maths and Science. The children had a great experience and are looking forward to their next transition visit.

On Wednesday afternoon Mr Anderson from the music department at DCHS visited primary 7 to practise the song we will be singing at the High School Christmas concert.

Today selected pupils will be attending the Sportshall Athletics event at Craigswood Sports centre. Check the blog next week to find out how they got on!

Primary 7 – 28/10/16

A spooky time as had by all at the Halloween party last night. A fantastic range of outfits were worn and well done to the winners!

This week has been another busy week in P7. The children finished their Japan books and read them to primary 4. Primary 4 then gave P7 feedback on what they liked about the books and what needed to be improved.

After school clubs started this week, please remind the children that it is important to attend every week. If they are unable to attend then please let the school know.

On Wednesday we had a visit from two high school teachers – Miss Thomson worked with Mrs Gilmour’s class in maths and Mr Anderson worked with both classes to start preparing them for the song that they will sing at the High School Christmas concert.

Next week we will begin work on our Remembrance topic – if you have any photographs or memories to share about relatives who died during a war and you are happy to share these, please could you contact the school. The children will be creating a display/wreath to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of why Remembrance is important. We will be learning the song ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ to sing at assembly.

We have also started preparing for our ERASMUS visitors coming on the week beginning 14 November. The children are creating a display for the classroom. They will also be making boxes on the theme of Scotty dogs which we will fill with homemade tablet to give to our visitors. We will be learning the song ‘Scotland’s Story’ by the Proclaimers to sing for our visitors.

Next Monday we have a visit from West Lothian Drug and Alcohol service who will be working with the children on he dangers of substance misuse.

Next Friday 4th selected children will be attending the rearranged Sportshall Athletics event at Craigswood Sports Centre. Please remember to wear your PE kit and bring a water bottle. The rest of the children will e having outdoor PE on this day so they will also need PE kit and water bottle.

Primary 7 – 14.10.16

A big thank you to parents/carers who came to parents’ night on Wednesday and Thursday. We really appreciate your support to ensure the children are meeting their full potential.

On Monday we went to watch ‘The Wiz’ at Deans Community High School. The children really enjoyed it and we could see how much time and effort the high school pupils had put into the production.

We have had a week of witnessing a variety of natural disasters. The children had worked very hard to create their 3D models and many worked very successfully. We had volcanoes erupting, tsunamis flooding, earthquakes shaking and tornadoes/cyclones twisting. We were all weathered out by the end!

The children wrote fabulous newspaper reports about various natural disasters. Hopefully you had a chance to read some of these on parents’ night.

The children are working on their non-fiction book about Japan. They will be reading these books to P4 after the holiday. Some children have chosen to work on these over the holiday. We will have one session once we are back from the holidays to complete these.

After the holiday, our RME topic will be Remembrance. If you have any photos, memorabilia or experience of attending Remembrance ceremonies and would be happy to share these with the children then please let us know.

Thank you to all children (and parents!) who have completed and brought in their 3D working model of a natural disaster. All models and presentations should be in school for Monday. The children will be presenting these on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week. We are looking forward to lots of explosions!

The children have been working hard in art with Ms Fox making fabric Scotty dogs and these are beginning to come to life! Some of these will be presented to our ERASMUS visitors in November.

Well done to Rebekah D in P7W for coming second in the P7 girls race at the cross country.

Next week, the book fair is in school. The children will have an opportunity to browse the books on Wednesday next week. The book fair is open at the end of each day and on parents’ night. If your child would like to buy a book, please send in the money and they will be able to buy it on any day that it is open.

Lots happening in P7 this week! Natural disaster models are beginning to be created and children are working hard on this. There is a variety of profiles being written – some on PowerPoint and some on displays. Well done for all of the hard work at home and in class! A reminder that this is to be completed by Friday 7th October.

In reading the children are creating a non fiction book about Japanese life. If you have any information, pictures or items they could include then please send them in so that they can be part of their book.

Unfortunately due to circumstances outwith our control, the Sportshall Athletics has had to be postponed. The children who were chosen to attend this will do so at a later date. Information about this new date will be sent home once it has been confirmed.

Primary 3 25.4.16

Primary 3 have front row seats for the construction of the new gym hall. We have been seeing lots of activity outside our classroom windows! We are lucky enough today to have one of the contractors coming in to speak to our boys and girls about the construction, the equipment and machinery that is used. We also might meet their mascot! We will let you know how we get on.

Very exciting week in Primary 3- its nearly time for our residential to Lowport. Everyone is looking forward to some outdoor activities and we hope the sun keeps shining for us. Any questions about Lowport, please feel free to contact us.

Last week in Primary 3 we wrote letters to our local gardener. The children had to share their learning and think of at least 3 questions to ask. The children carefully structured their letters and decorated them with drawings of flowers.

Primary 3 18.3.16

Primary 3’s new topic for this term is Our Outstanding Outdoors. We will be learning about plants, wildlife and investigating outdoor play parks. We are looking forward to getting outside and getting our hands dirty.

Primary 3 are also attending Futsal lessons on a Tuesday morning, The children will be learning skills like controlling the ball with their feet, passing and teamwork. Please bring an indoor P.E kit every Tuesday morning (This will replace our outdoor P.E).

Last week we started to learning a little more about money and how to give change. We will be continuing this, so please encourage your children to be more familiar with all the coins and their value.

A number of children are beginning to get excited about our trip to Lowport- we have asked the children to think of a talent/performance for the Thursday evening. If they could get back to us with that talent and any resources/music they require so we can be prepared. Miss Christy also has lots of exciting plans for the boys and girls who are not going to Lowport.
