Primary 1 Home Learning – 13.05.20

Good morning Primary 1!

We hope you are all having a lovely time at home and are continuing to enjoy all of this beautiful sunshine. We hope you have all managed to access the 3 weekly learning grids and are enjoying exploring some of the activities on there. Make sure you are still leaving lots of time for relaxing, playing and helping out at home too.

We would be grateful if you could all take the time to complete West Lothian Council’s School Meal survey 2019-2020 : https://www.esurveycreator.com/s/890ff1b . The survey is very short and won’t take much time to complete!

The Rights Respecting School article of the week is focusing on Article 14 – Freedom of thought, belief and religion. Have a conversation about times your views have been listened to and your choices respected. Can you name all of the places you feel welcome? Now it’s time to choose from one of the RRS suggested activities for this week:

  • Thoughts and beliefs are usually really important to people. Write down some things you believe in strongly. Share these with your family or discuss them with your friends.
  • Food choices are really important to some people. Find out about the food rules of veganism or a specific religion. If you have the ingredients at home, why don’t you have a go at making a dish with your family? Watch this video from the BBC and its humorous exploration of food and religion
  • List as many religions as you can think of. Do you know what symbols are linked with these religions? Have a go at drawing them if you can.
  • Why do you think religious buildings are important? Think of and draw a building that is important to you or make a sculpture of one of these buildings using things you can find around the house (old cereal boxes, empty toilet roll etc.). This could be a religious building like a church or a temple, or even a school or a library. Write a sentence or two about why this building is important to you.

Good morning Primary 1s

Today is Mardi. Can you say that? Have a look outside the window and see if you can describe the weather in French. Here are some helpful phrases:

Quel temps fait-il?  (What is the weather like?)

Il fait beau (It is nice)

Il fait froid (it is cold)

Il fait gris (it is grey)

Il fait chaud (it is hot)

Il pleut (it’s raining)

Il neige (it’s snowing)

If you want a reminder of how to say some of these words and some alternative phrases, this video will help

There are a lot more phrases in this video than we would normally teach, but it is helpful to listen to French being spoken to understand pronunciation. Have a go repeating the French phrases and don’t worry if you can’t remember them all!

Good morning boys and girls and welcome to a new week!
We hope that you all had a nice weekend and managed to spend some time with your family having fun. What was the favourite thing that you did? All 3 teachers had a busy weekend in their kitchens! Miss Daun tried a new recipe from her cook book, and both Miss Cunningham and Miss Christy made cookies!

Primary 1 Home Learning 08.05.20

Good morning Primary 1

Happy Friday! We hope you have had a fantastic week learning from home and you’ve managed to get outside in the sunshine for some fresh air with your family this week. Today is a very special day as it is the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2. We call this day ‘VE day’ which stands for Victory in Europe. We celebrate this day every year as it marks the end of the war in Europe. On May 8th, 1945, former Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that Germany had finally surrendered and the fighting across Europe had finished. At the end of the war in 1945 people across the country put up flags, banners and there were streamers everywhere. There were parties, fireworks, and some people wore red, white and blue rosettes. People hugged, sang songs and danced. It was a very happy time!

We thought it would be fun for you today to get creative and host your own celebration for VE day. You could host your own tea party for some of your teddy bears, dolls or action figures. You could bake cupcakes for the occasion and ice on British flags, create your own UK flag to wave or dress up your toys. You could listen to some music and dance too! We would love to see some of your fun creations on the Learning Journals. We love seeing all of the activities you are getting up to at home. Thank you for continuing to share all of your work with us.

Good Morning Primary 1s!
We hope that you are all well! What a beautiful day we had yesterday, we hope that you managed to get outside and have some fun. The teachers all loved getting outside after work yesterday, Miss Christy went for a long cycle in the countryside, Miss Daun went for a run once it had cooled down a bit and Miss Cunningham went for a lovely walk.
Yesterday, we posted some new learning grids for you to work through. Try to do at least 3 of these activities today at some point and remember to post photos of your super work on the Learning Journals. It is so lovely seeing your work every day!
Before we moved to online learning we had started our ‘Fairyland’ topic. As always, we have created a SWAY to show this learning and we have added in a few photos from your work at home too! The link to the SWAY will be posted in your Learning Journal later this morning. Have a look to see if you can spot yourself in any of the photos!

The Rights Respecting School Article of the week is Article 7, the right to a name and nationality. Why don’t you have a discussion about why you chose the name for your child and maybe other names you had been considering? Talk about nationalities, about the country you come from and how you identify with that nation. The slide below gives some ideas of other activities you might want to try…

I particularly like the ‘identity hand’ task. Draw around your hand and write your name, date of birth, home country and 2 adults who help you on the fingers, then draw the flag of where you call home on the palm. We would love to see some of your hand prints on the Learning Journals.

It takes you to a story called ‘The name jar’. This is a story about a Korean girl who is learning about her name and identity as she moves to a new country. After watching the video talk about

Welcome back Primary 1s!

We hope you had a lovely long weekend. The sun has certainly been out. What did you get up to? It was my birthday yesterday so I went on a lovely evening walk and saw a squirrel run across the path in front of me. It was very cute! Miss Christy went on her daily walks and she has done lots of sewing projects too. She sewed different coloured material together to create baskets to help organise her baking cupboard. Miss Daun also went on local walks, played board games and did some yoga. Have you tried any yoga at home yet?

Can you believe it is May already? You are all doing so well with your learning from home. We have an exciting week ahead of us. I have attached the grids and resources for this week. We hope you enjoy doing the tasks if you are able to and we can’t wait to hear how you get on.

Primary 1 – Home Learning 01.05.20

Bonjour Primary 1! Happy Vendredi!

It’s almost the weekend and we hope you have had another lovely week of learning at home. Please feel free to finish off any activities left on the home learning grids this morning as we will be posting new grids on Wednesday. If you fancy getting active this morning and while having some ‘Fun Family Friday’ time then you could invent your own assault course in your garden! You could use hoops, balls, skipping ropes, toys or any other resources you have to hand! You could even draw some activities outside with chalk. Alternatively you could create your own fitness circuit for example: star jumps, bunny hops, push ups, running and high knees. Get creative! Primary 1 – Home Learning 30.04.20

Good morning Primary 1! Happy Jeudi!

This week we have been focusing on the fairy tale story ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and for our writing activity we were looking at the story from the wolf’s perspective. Did anyone manage to create a fun alternative ending to the story? We would love to see some examples of your work on the learning journals! This morning we would like to challenge you to create your own mask for the big bad wolf to add to your story. Perhaps you could even act out your story while wearing the wolf mask!

For this activity you will need:

  • a paper plate
  • white, black and brown card (or tissue paper)
  • glue
  • scissors
  • stapler
  • string

Instructions to create your own big bad wolf mask:

First cut your brown tissue paper (or card) into small squares (this is great for practicing your cutting skills!)
Take your paper plate and put a good amount of glue all over it. Place the tissue paper on top of the glue, until the paper plate is completely covered.
Cut out circles for the eyes – two large white circles and two smaller black circles for the pupils (or alternatively you could ask an adult to cut out eye holes so you can see when you wear your mask!)

Then cut out two pointy ears using brown card.

Next cut out your long snout using brown card and add a small black circle for the nose at the end.

Then add some sharp teeth by cutting out rectangles out of white card.

Glue all of the facial features onto your wolf.
Finally, staple some string to your wolf mask, making sure that the length of the string will fit snugly around your head.
Then display proudly!

Primary 1 – Home Learning 29.04.20

Happy Vendredi Primary 1!

This morning we thought it would be a nice idea for you to explore Glasgow Science Centre’s video on how to create your own bird feeder. There are bound to be lots of hungry birds in your own garden so why not make them feel at home with a handmade bird feeder? Maybe you could even try to identify some of the birds you see in your garden and make a note of how many birds visit each day?  If you are interested, Glasgow Science Centre also will be bringing a bit of science into your home every day at 10am to help keep everyone inspired in these challenging times, so please feel free to explore some of their other videos too.

The bird feeder will allow you to give the birds in your local area a helping hand while recycling some materials you have at home. You can access the Glasgow Science Centre’s bird feeder video by following the link below:

For this activity you will need:

  • a clean yogurt pot
  • seeds (or you can also use nuts/raisins/sultanas/apples/bananas)
  • string
  • a pencil
  • a bowl
  • lard (or substitutes like peanut butter, almond butter mixed with flour or vegetable/beef suet)

When you have created your bird feeder, think about how the materials you have used feel. For example are they sticky, squidgy, soft, fluffy, hard, rough, wet, light or heavy? We would love to see some examples of your bird feeders on the learning journals! Maybe you could even take a picture of a hungry bird eating the seeds?

We hope that you are still enjoying learning from home and that you are still finding lots of time to play, relax and enjoy time with your family.

Our school is currently working towards getting the Gold Rights Respecting School Award. UNICEF have provided a set of remote learning activities that you can access at home to encourage children to learn about their rights in fun engaging ways. This week they are focusing on Article 12 – Respect for the views of the child. This article is particularly important right now when so many of the mechanisms for children’s voice to be heard are absent during this crisis. The activities related to ‘Respecting Children’s Views’ can be found below. Can you pick one of the tasks to complete and post your work on to the Learning Journals? We would love to see some examples of your work!

Good morning!
We hope that you had a fantastic weekend with your family. What did you get up to? We hope that you managed to spend some time outside. Miss Christy, Miss Daun and Miss Cunningham are all missing you so thank you so much to everyone who has posted on the Learning Journals to show us all your hard work. We are hoping to use this format more in the next few weeks and hope that it eases some of the teaching pressure at home. The video will be sent through a dropbox link in the Learning Journal messages. We will also be sending out a message with your child’s reading homework.

Happy Vendredi Primary 1!

I hope you’ve all had a lovely time learning from home this week. It has been wonderful to see all of you working so hard and enjoying learning at home with your family. Thank you for continuing to share all of your hard work with us on the Learning Journals. We have shared some of the best work we have seen on the school blog and will continue to celebrate all of your efforts next week! Did anyone manage to go outdoors and see some of the signs of Spring of Spring this week? Maybe you were able to spot some daffodils, bumblebees and baby lambs in the fields? The weather has been beautiful, I hope you’ve all been outside enjoying the sunshine!

We will provide you with some fun new activities on Monday so it’s a great time to finish off any of the activities on the home learning grids this morning. We hope that you are finding the grids useful and that you are managing to access all of the resources you need. Fridays are truly the beginning of the weekend and it’s a great time to start winding down for some ‘Fun Family Friday’ time. We would like you to spend some quality time with your family today, whether that’s in the garden, going for a walk, baking a cake or playing a board game. It’s so important for us to stay healthy, happy and connected during this time. You could even perhaps give an aunt, uncle, grandparent or friend a phone call to catch up on what you have been getting up to at home this week.  Or you could write a letter to a friend or family member if you have time.

Get Set have posted some free resources, activities and challenges for the whole family to enjoy. Here are some examples of the active challenges you can take part in today:

GET ACTIVE

  • Train to win activity sheet – keep kids active at home by challenging them to try a simple activity such as star jumps, jumping jacks or line jumps (jumping from one side of a line to the other with your feet together and knees bent) each day and track their personal best.
  • Domes and dishes – try to fun group game in the garden or living room to get active and explore the Olympic Value of respect. Use cones if available, or paper plates, books, or toys – anything that you can turn over!
  • Play Boccia – read the rules for the Paralympic sport of boccia and see if you can adapt and play a game in or outside of the house!
  • Winter team sports challenge – try these adapted (no snow required) versions of sports from the Olympic Winter Games.

Good morning Primary 1,
If you had time to do the Enormous Turnip drama yesterday we hope you enjoyed it! It is a great way to demonstrate and practise your drama skills.
What signs of spring have you been noticing? It is amazing to see the changes around us as we move from winter to spring. Do you have a favourite season and if so why is it your favourite? My favourite season is spring because the weather turns warmer and beautiful flowers bloom.

Good morning Primary 1s. It’s another lovely sunny day today and I hope you are managing to get outside to make the most of this sunshine. I am noticing lots of signs on spring during my daily exercise. I have seen blossom forming on trees, baby lambs bouncing in the fields and some warmer weather showing us that summer is on its way.

What have you seen as you go out and about?
We hope that you managed to read or listen to the story of the Enormous Turnip yesterday. Has anyone managed to make the vegetable soup from the learning grid? I love in the story that everyone worked together to help pull the turnip out. What examples of people working together have you seen in the past week? Maybe you and your family worked as a team to complete a jigsaw puzzle, or have you been out in the garden working together to grow some flowers or food?

As a school we are currently working towards re-accreditation of our Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award. UNICEF have created some activities that can be completed at home to continue the work we would have been doing in class. These activities give the children an opportunity to learn about their rights and think through how they access them.
This week we are looking at Article 24, the right to health care. Can you complete any of these activities over the coming days and post your work in the Learning Journals? You can also post your work with the hashtag #RRSA on Twitter, or share it on the RRSA Facebook page.

Good morning Primary 1,

We hope that you’ve all been enjoying this lovely sunshine and are still managing to find some time to exercise and play outside! It was lovely to see some of you enjoying spending time outdoors with your family during the Easter holidays on the Learning Journals. Thank you for continuing to share your home learning experiences with us.

We would like to suggest that you choose one or two activities from the home learning grids to complete today if you are able. You can access the links to the literacy, numeracy and interdisciplinary learning grids and resources on the school blog and in the messages section on your Learning Journals. Please make sure that you still make time for playing, exercising and helping out around the house too!

This week we are focusing on the fairy tale ‘The Enormous Turnip’. You can access the link to the audio clip on BBC School Radio here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03rttqq. The Enormous Turnip is a great fairy tale at this time as it symbolises the importance of team work and people coming together. Ask your child to close their eyes and listen to the story. Imagine what happens in the story at the beginning, middle and end of the story and think about how they all manage to pull the enormous turnip out of the ground. After listening to the story, retell the events in your own words to an adult. During your story you could try acting out some of the events, role playing some of the characters or you could even use some props. If you have time, you could ask an adult to film you retelling the story and share it with us on the Learning Journals. We would love to see how you get on with this at home!

You could even learn and include this fun song about Farmer Ben ploughing his field (try singing it to the theme of The Grand Old Duke of York):
