Primary 4 1.9.16

It was lovely to see so many parents on Tuesday night, thank you for coming along to see us. If you couldn’t manage, don’t worry, we have put a class newsletter into your child’s bag as well as a spelling homework exemplar to see the kinds of things we will be doing in the first term of Primary 4.

We have had a busy week this week settling into our new class properly. We have discussed and created our class charter based on the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. We have used this charter to decide upon our classroom rules. The whole school focus has been on SHANARRI, and within this acronym, Primary 4 have focused on Inclusion. We discussed and gave examples of how we were all included in Carmondean Primary School and then illustrated these ideas using pens and coloured paper. We have sent home the charter we decided on to allow you to see what rules we shall be following this year. These are in the children’s words and what they found important to them. Please could you return the tear off slip at the bottom of the rules letter to show your support and understanding of the importance of following these.

We have been learning about colour as one of the visual elements of Art, and even did a science experiment investigating colour!

We have started planning our Viking topic this week and look forward to learning more about it this term. We have had some fantastic ideas from the children such as making Viking food, creating a small viking village and even creating our very own life sized viking! We also thought of a lot of questions we would like to have answered by the end of the topic which has given Miss Donaldson, Miss Miller and myself lots of food for thought when planning the topic.

Children have been given letters home relating to their achievements and interests. We would be extremely grateful if these could be completed and handed back into school.

Letters to be returned to office: personal information, achievements, agreement of rules.

Please could we ask all items of clothing to have the children’s initials on them for ease of identifying the owners. We have had a few items lost and thankfully found this week, but it would be made easier with names on them somewhere.

– Use of water grid – one night of the week (once home from school) children should place tally marks every time family members use water for any activity. This could be making a cup of tea, washing up, wetting a cloth, running a bath, having a shower. Grids will be made in class and put into spelling homework jotters.

Primary Five 29.8.16

We are glad to be back at school after the long and relaxing summer break and excited to see so many happy faces in Primary 5! The first two weeks of the school term will be spent settling back in to the rules and routines of the classroom, getting to know each other and revisiting and amending the class charter to form the class rules. We will also be spending some time looking at the SHANARRI indicators and how we can make sure we are meeting these for every child. Primary 5 will then be looking in more detail at how we can achieve and discussing some of our personal achievements.

There is no Spelling/Reading/Maths homework this week but your child will bring home a spelling homework jotter which we would be grateful if you could cover with some spare wrapping/brown paper and return for Friday. We also ask that your child chooses a novel that they will use as a basis for their Reading homework this term and bring it in for Wednesday so we can discuss our choices as a class.

Primary 4 26.8.16

Welcome back everyone!

It has been so nice seeing everyone back at school and getting to know everyone in our new class. We have been very busy this week settling in, for some of us into a new classroom, and to others having new classmates! Welcome also to three students who are new to our stage, two in Miss Smith’s class and one in Miss Donaldson’s, and to Miss Miller, who will be helping in Primary 4 up until the end of February. I have to say, I have been very impressed so far with the way we have been following routines and getting used to being a Primary 4 in the upper school!

If anyone has any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to meeting some of the parents next Tuesday 30th August at Meet the Teacher. This will help us put names to faces and to pick up the class newsletter to find out what is happening this term in Primary 4.

Primary 4 10.6.16

We are beginning to learn about the features of power point and are creating a power point quiz for the adults to try out at our Curriculum Open Morning on Friday 24th at 11:15am. We have been using our research on our chosen mini-beast to inform our quiz. We have been inserting pictures and changing backgrounds and font in colour and size. Next week, we will be learning how to add in hyperlinks within our slides.

We also developed our own comic strips about mini-beast characters which we developed and planned ourselves. We have been learning a lot about correct punctuation for speech and we will turn our comic strips into a proper story next week to practise this. We also plan to turn it into a play script and allow others in our class to use our stage directions to help them act it out.

Busily, the children have been preparing a fact file about different aspects of our Science Mini-beast topic. This will be coming home next week for you to assess and give feedback on. We look forward to sharing and discussing our work with you.

This was the last week for Spelling homework. Next week we will be finishing off our reading books for homework.

Primary 4 3.6.16

I will begin by saying a huge well done to all of the primary 3s, 4s and 5s in their excellent efforts in the school show. It was absolutely fantastic and all your hard work definitely paid off. I was a very proud teacher on Wednesday with what you managed to achieve. I’m sure all of the parents agree!

We began our week with our last community trip – to Morrisons. There, we had a tour around the counters and areas of the store including the fruit and veg isle, where we learned of strange foods and where they came from, the fish isle, where we learned how they gut a fish before sale and also had a tour ‘behind the scenes’. We learned of how the store collected and sorted deliveries and even how the store recycled their packaging! We even got to taste foods from all areas of the store, including pancakes and tiger bread from the bakery, a fruit cocktail from the fresh produce and cheese from the refrigerators. It was very interesting, and we thank Mrs Hendry for organising our visit.

We have been busy presenting our mini-beasts to Primary 4/3 where we showed them our 3D models, plans and leaflets. We are busy learning about power point and how to use it to create quizes and linked slides using the information we wrote in our leaflets.

Primary 3 w.b. 30.5.16

Primary 3 have been very busy the past few weeks completing a variety of tests to measure their progress throughout the year. Most children did very well in these and everyone should be proud of the effort they put in.
We are now back to a normal week of lessons. In maths, primary 3 are learning about fractions and data handling. Last week the children completed a traffic survey and today they will create a bar graph showing their results.
Our interdisciplinary topic is going well, the children have been learning about our local area and are thinking about vandalism and how to keep Livingston safe and tidy.

Primary 3 w.b. 9.5.16

Good Morning!
Primary 3 have been working hard the past few weeks on their Outstanding Outdoors Topic. The children who didn’t go to Lowport created a super wall display while the rest of the class were away. So far mosst of the learning has focused around plants. Our table sunflowers are beginning to grow. The children are taking responsibility for watering them every few days are are enjoying watching the progress. This week we are moving on to learn about the local area we live in. We are looking forward to learning more about Livingston and landuse in the area.
In maths, primary 3 are finishing off their work on numbers to 1000. We have been very impressed by their knowledge of numbers so far!
This week we will begin CEM testing. The children will complete tests on computers over the next 2 weeks to measure their progress in maths, literacy and general learning.
A reminder that Homework begins again this week. The children will be given reading, spelling and maths homework to complete by Friday.
PE this week is on Monday and Tuesday for P3R and Tuesday and Wednesday for P3C.

Primary Five 22nd April 2016

This week we continued our rehearsals for the School Show. The songs are really coming on and the actors are doing a great job so far. Please remind your child to learn lines if they have a part as we will be focussing on stage directions in class.

In Language we have been looking at the poems of Grace Nicholls. We have been reading her poetry, discussing the type of language she uses and talking about the things we like about her poems. We have also had a go at writing our own poems based on her poem ‘Morning’.

This term in French we will be learning vocabulary that we use in a cafe. This week we looked at French words for different drinks.

In PE this week we started our new topics- Athletics and Mini Golf. We are lucky to have two PE students in this term to help us out.

Please remember gyms kits-Indoor kit on Tuesday and outdoor kit on a Friday.

P4/3 Update 22.4.16

Well done to the P4s who were at Auchengillan last week. Their behaviour was great and they all took part in the activities enthusiastically. Have a look at Miss Smith’s P4 blog for some photos of the trip.
The P3s are now really looking forward to their overnight trip to Lowport next week.

We also really enjoyed our trip to Dynamic Earth this week. Unfortunately our bus got caught up in bad traffic on our way there but the boys’ and girls’ behaviour was fantastic with no complaints on the journey. We learned lots more about the rainforests and also had a tour around Dynamic Earth.

Some of the class are taking part in a schools gymnastics competition on Thursday and we all wish them luck. I’m sure they’ll have a great time and do brilliantly.

New reading homework sheets have been attached in homework jotters. These include weekly reading pages as well as tasks to be completed once a fortnight. Please have a look at these as they started this week.
Next week’s homework will be Spelling, reading and maths.

Remember indoor PE is now on a Monday and outdoor PE on a Thursday (weather permitting) so please make sure your child has appropriate kit on these days.

Your child should have brought home a letter last week informing you of the change of teacher in class. As of May 24th Mrs Gilmour and Mrs Harris will be teaching P4/3 when I go off on maternity leave.

The boys and girls in P4 and 5 have all been working hard and rehearsing for our school show. We’re sure it’s going to be great and can’t wait to see the final result.

P4/3 update 15.4.16

What an exciting week we’ve had this week!
On Tuesday we had a visitor called Callum from a company called Cool Creatures. He came into class with some animals for us to meet. They were all animals from rainforest climates and it really helped us to kick off this term’s topic in a fun and exciting way.
We met a tortoise, two giant millipedes, two armadillos, a tarantula and a python called Bob.

On Tuesday of next week(the 19th) we are going to Dynamic Earth to learn more about the rainforests. A letter was sent home about this earlier in the week. Please can you ensure that this is returned to school before Tuesday and that children bring a packed lunch with them that day. We are all looking forward to our trip.

Some of the Primary 4’s also headed off to Auchengillan for their overnight trip yesterday with Miss Smith. We hope they are having lots of fun and that the weather stays good for them.

Those of us still in school have been busy planning Day for Change which is an event that will be taking place in 3 weeks time.

We also went outside to have a look at the construction of our new gym hall. We’re very excited about all the progress that’s been made and can’t wait until it’s finished.

A slight change has had to be made to our timetable. Indoor PE will remain on a Monday but, as of next week, outdoor PE has been moved to a Thursday and will be on a Thursday until the end of term. Please ensure your child has appropriate kit on these days.

Primary 4 18.3.16

We have started a challenge to round off our learning about Scotland and its main cities. We have been put into groups and provided with a big map to fill with information about 4 of the main cities. This should be information for tourists and demonstrate the knowledge we have gained. I will post pictures of the finished products next week!

This week Primary six did a super job of organising Sport Relief bake sale. It ran smoothly and we all enjoyed a little sweet treat in preparation of our sporty Friday!

Primary 4 , 4/3 and 5 have also started casting for the school show. We are excited about it and are learning of the cast list today. Thank you to everyone who auditioned.

In other news, look out in Morrisons for Carmondean Primary School’s entries to the Easter competition. They are being displayed in the window of Morrisons at Carmondean and the winners will be chosen next Tuesday.

P4/3 update

Only one more week until our well deserved Easter holiday. The boys and girls have worked so hard this term and I’m sure they’re looking forward to the break. Remember we finish up on Thursday of next week.
We will be finishing our Mary Queen of Scots topic next week and after the holidays we will be introducing our new topic of the Rainforest with a very exciting visitor. A company called Cool Creatures will be coming along to class with a variety of tropical animals, including this very large snake who also visited us last year in Primary 2.

PE times have now altered slightly as we no longer have Mrs Ferguson. Indoor PE is now on a Monday and outdoor PE on a Wednesday.
We have started to look at our school show for this year with Mr Platt. We are all very excited about it and parts will be given out very soon.

Primary 3 w.b. 14.3.16

Primary 3 have had a busy few weeks! Last Monday was our Knights and Castles Assembly. Thank you to all the parents who came to support the children. I’m sure you’ll agree that the children did a great job. The children with lines spoke loudly and clearly and all remembered their lines, and the actors and actresses did a great job representing life in different rooms in a castle.
The medieval banquet on Friday was a huge success. The children looked great in their costumes and behaved beautifully! Thank you to everyone who was able to come and support the children.
This week is assessment week in Primary 3. All work will be done in a special ‘assessment jotter’. The work done this week should provide a ‘snapshot’ of where your children are in their learning.
PE times have changed as of this week. Miss Rafferty’s class will have indoor PE on a Monday and outdoor on a Tuesday. Miss Christy’s class will have outdoor PE on a Tuesday and indoor PE on a Wednesday.

Primary 4, 4.3.16

What an exciting day we had for World Book Day and some excellent costumes and characters from our favourite books! We took part in a class quiz to see how much we knew about famous books just for a bit of fun in celebrating World Book Day and customised bookmarks to make them our own.

This week we also had fun in health, ordering drinks depending on the amount of sugar we thought they had in them. We were extremely surprised when we seen the results. We have been learning about the effects of sugar on our teeth and are awaiting a visit from the Dental Nurses who have kindly agreed to come in to visit us and give us a talk. This will be followed up nicely next term with healthy eating.

Primary 3 w.b. 25.1.16

Well done to everyone who learnt their Scots poem last week. We were very impressed by the confident and clear delivery given by all the children which made it difficult to chose 2 winners from each class to go forward to the Burns Assembly on Friday. Well done to Leila, Sophia, Joe and Isla for being selected; you performed well and were great representatives of Primary 3. Joe and Leila were the winners from the competition for primary 3.
Primary 3 have been learning their times tables in Maths. So far the children have learnt and practised the 2,5,10 and 3 times tables and this week will be learning the 4 times table. Thank you for the practice you are putting in at home for this, it makes a lot of difference to the children’s confidence.
In our Knights and Castles topic, primary 3 have already learnt about the parts of a castle and the progression of becoming a knight. This week we will look at medieval weapons and will create a self portrait as a king or queen to hang in our great hall!
On Tuesday, primary 3 will be performing ‘Katie Bairdie’ at the Scots afternoon. All children must be in full school uniform for this.
A reminder that Miss Christy has indoor PE on Monday and Outdoor PE on Tuesday, and Miss Rafferty has outdoor PE on Tuesday and indoor PE on Wednesday.

Primary 6

It’s been an exciting full first week back. We’ve been finishing off the film we have created – A Tale Unfolds. The film has involved the children creating the characters, deciding on the plot, writing the scripts and voiceovers and filming the scenes. We certainly are a talented bunch in P6!

Next week we start our new topic ‘Titanic’ – watch this space for ongoing updates.

Everyone has been learning a Robert Burns poem to recite in class next week. We’ve been practising in class but please also support your child to practise their poem at home if you can.

A date for your diaries: the P6/7 show ‘Hosanna’ will be on 16th March. We’ll be deciding on parts over the next couple of weeks so please let us know if your child is not likely to be able to make that date (there will be a performance in the evening as well as during the day).

Primary 4 15.1.16

We received a letter to kick start our Scotland topic which asked us to help with some research of Scottish myths and legends. Children participated in research tasks and found out three main mythical creatures connected to Scotland. These are Kelpies, selkies and Nessie.

We have been using our atlas skills to work out the countries and capitals of the United Kingdom. We also were learning more about North, South, East and West, as well as the points in between.

In science, we conducted experiments, learning about static electricity. We had some very interesting hairstyles afterwards as we had to think of ways to ‘charge’ our balloons.

I hope children have been practising their poems over the last week ready for our class competition next Thursday. There will also be opportunities in class to recite poems with the teacher and classmates before then. Class winners will then recite their poem to the school on Friday of next week. Winners from this competition will attend the main Burns poetry recital.

Thank you this week to everyone for having their PE kit in on the days we had PE with only the exception of one or two both days. It made a huge difference. Hopefully the weather will pick up for next Tuesday and we will be able to get out for some rugby. It was not in our favour this week.

Primary 4, 8.1.16

Happy New Year!

We hope you have had an enjoyable and well rested festive break. We are happy to be back and are looking forward to a busy term ahead full of learning.

We are very lucky to have Miss Leyland with us for the next six weeks. She will be working in our classroom and with the children throughout her time at Carmondean.

This week, we started our new Interdisciplinary Topic, Scotland. The children were eager to share their existing knowledge and keen to give their suggestions as to what and how they wish to learn.

We have chosen our Burns poems and these have been sent home with the pupils today. We have selected one out of the following four Robert Burns poems; On Holy Willie, Scots Wha Hae, A Bard’s Epitaph and Willie Wastle. I have attached these below. Click on the ‘Poems’ link to access them. These should be learned by Thursday 21st January.

P4/3 Update 18.12.15

Well we’ve finally made it to the holidays. Well done to the boys and girls who have worked very hard this term, I’m sure they’re looking forward to some well earned time off.

We all had a great time at the pantomime at Howden Park Centre on Tuesday, thank you very much to the parent helpers who came along. I think it got us all very much in the festive spirit.

The boys and girls also enjoyed their party last Friday and had a great time showing off the Scottish dances we have learned in school.

After the holidays we will continue to have outdoor PE on a Monday and indoor PE on a Wednesday so please ensure your child has appropriate kit on those days.

We will not have homework the first week back as the children do not return to school until Wednesday the 6th January, normal spelling and reading homework will resume the following week (beginning 11th January)
