Primary 2/1 Snow Day

Good morning  everyone! I hope you are having a good morning and staying cosy and warm!

Mr Shanks posted some great activity booklets at the beginning of the term in the event of a snow day, go and have a look at the P1_2 section of the post for some fun things to do.

Here are some more things you can do today on your unexpected day off:

  1. Build a snowman, measure it to see how tall it is.  Can you make one that is the same height as you?
  2. Make a spelling word poster- use the words from your spelling homework book (P1-th words/P2- o_e words) and write them in different colours or in bubble writing.  Decorate your poster and bring it into school to put on the wall.
  3. P1- Have a go at finding all the addition and subtraction facts up to 10.  See if an adult can test you on some addition and subtraction facts.
  4. P2- Have a go at making some addition and subtraction fact sums to 20.  See if you can remember all the double number facts we have been working on in class.  You could even sing our double number song to someone at home.  The link for the song is at the end of this post.
  5. Draw or paint a snowy picture-bring it to school to show the rest of the class.
  6. Write a story about a snowy day- see if you can include some WOW words in your writing.
  7. Tell an adult 4 things you have learned so far about Katie Morag and the Isle of Struay.  Make a poster for our Post Office and Shop role play area showing what the shop sells and how much it costs.
  8. Warm up after playing in the snow with a warm drink and a book-read your homework books to an adult.
  9. Have a go at some of the games that I have given the links for below.
  10. Have a fun day and stay safe!

P2 Double number song-P1s can have a listen too!

P2/1 7th February 2018

Both the P1s and P2s have been working very hard with subtraction in the past few weeks.  The P1s have been learning subtraction facts to 10 and the P2s have been doing missing number subtraction facts.  We have been able to discuss lots of different strategies to complete these sums and have been using 10 frames and number lines to help us.

In language the P1s have been consolidating all the initial sounds and will be moving onto consonant blends-sh, th, ch etc.

The children are really enjoying their Katie Morag topic and we now have our Struay Post Office and Shop open for business!

Thank you for your continued support.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Primary 7 blog.

We have had a fun filled week in P7 this week. On Monday Michelle came to visit us from WLDAS (West Lothian Drug & Alcohol Service). She spoke to both classes about smoking. The children learned how many chemicals are in cigarettes (over 4000!) and they also discussed the impact that smoking can have on our bodies and also on other areas of our lives. However, the children are aware that it is very difficult to stop smoking. In order to experience what it might be like to give up smoking the children have all been asked to give up something that they do frequently and replace it with a healthy alternative. Some of the habits that the children have given up include sweets, playing the Xbox, watching TV and drinking fizzy juice. The children have replaced these habits with a variety of alternatives this week including eating more fruit and vegetables, playing with their siblings and going outside to play. Miss Clark is even giving up chocolate for the week (which is proving very difficult!) Well done Primary 7 for all of your hard work and dedication! We are really impressed at your ability to resist even when it’s difficult.

This week we also handed out speaking parts for our P7 Remembrance Assembly. The children have also been given song lyrics to learn for next week. Any support you could give your child in learning these would be greatly appreciated. The children have taken control of the assembly and have created a PowerPoint, quiz and art work. The children are also selling poppies around the school for a donation of 50p-£1. Thank you for all your hard work. Please note – this is a school only assembly.

The children have now been allocated their Enterprise groups after applying for one of five different jobs (manager, materials manager, finance expert, quality control and human resources). They have been working really well in their groups to decide on which product or game they would like to create for others to buy/play at the Christmas Fair on Friday 1st December. Each group then created a purchase list and calculated their required spending and projected profit. The children had to shop around on different websites to find the best deals. They then wrote to Miss Millar to ask for the required funds in order to begin to buy, make and sell their products and games. Thankfully we received word this week through letters to each group that Miss Millar is funding each groups project! Soon the children will have all of the products and materials they need in order to create their products and games.

Some reminders
Outdoor PE – Monday (As we are going outside each week can you please ensure that your child comes prepared with appropriate outdoor shoes to take part in all activities. They will also need a warm, waterproof jacket).
Indoor PE – Wednesday (Mrs Ferguson is working on gymnastics with the children and it is therefore vitally important that all children wear PE kit in order to take part in all activities).

Beginning next week (Monday 13th November) the children in Miss Clark’s class will be taking part in swimming lessons at DCHS for 4 weeks. It is very important that the children come prepared with a swimming kit, towel and full change of clothing (school uniform) each Monday. A letter will be sent home to remind children of this. Mrs Macaulay’s class will take part in swimming lessons later on in the year.

Thank you, as always, for your help and support. Have a lovely weekend.

P2/1 3rd November 2017

We have had another busy week in P2/1 this week and have started our new topic ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark’. We have made owls using paper plates and mounted them on a night time background. We have also been looking at dark being and exciting time with firework displays happening. We have talked about how to stay safe around fireworks and made some lovely firework pictures-look out for some of these being displayed on the windows of the P2/1 classroom!

In Maths this week we have all been looking at addition. The P2s have been adding groups that are screened or hidden and the P1s have been combining sets of objects.

In Phonics the P1s have been consolidating sounds that they have learned so far and focusing on blending the sounds to make CVC and CCVC words- we are doing really well with this! The P2s sound this week was -ue and the children have been enjoying thinking of new words to add to our lists and also finding -ue words in their reading books and around the classroom.

Next week we will begin rehearsals for our Nativity performances so be prepared for the children to come home singing some catchy songs!

Thank you for your continued support

Hello everyone

In Art we have been making Japanese cups. They are looking good so far. Next week we are going to paint them.

We have also been looking at the famous Japanese painting “The Great Wave” and we have been painting with watercolour paint. They are looking great so far.
In writing we have been writing Haiku poems. A Haiku poem has 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line and in the third line there are 5 syllables. A Haiku poem only has 3 lines. We also drew pictures to go with our poem.

We have been learning about Japanese music and seeing the differences between traditional Japanese music and Scottish music. The Japanese music sounds unusual to us but it is good.

Did you know that in Japan when a shop is closing they play Auld Lang Syne to tell everyone to leave at the end of the day? 🙂

In RME we have been making power points and posters about different religions like Christianity and Sikhism. Today we presented them to a small group of our friends.

Reminders:

Big Homework is due in next Friday 6th October. If your child requires a new homework sheet or any materials to complete their project then they should speak to their class teacher as soon as possible. Remember they only need to pick one of the eight tasks on the sheet to complete.

Maths and Spelling homework is due in on a Friday every week.

Hope you have a good weekend

Hello everyone! This week has been very busy in Primary 7.

We have been very busy down in Primary 1 with our buddies and helping them with their first lunchtimes in school. We have to be very patient because some of our buddies take forever at lunchtime!

We have been learning about how to be responsible Primary 7’s and have started doing a display for the hall. We have spoken about all the different qualities you need to have to be a responsible P7 and a responsible buddy.

This term our topic is Japan and in Art we have been making traditional Japanese tea cups. Also in Art we have been learning about the language they use in an art classroom in Japan. Thanks Miss Fox 🙂

In P.E Mrs Ferguson is our teacher and we have been playing basketball. We have been learning about the different passes you can use to shoot in the basketball hoops. We have been working in the new hall for P.E.

We have had lots of fun in Primary 7 this week. Have a nice weekend!

P5 Trip to Bannockburn

P5 had am amazing day yesterday at the Battle of Bannockburn visitors centre.  We learned all about the armour and weapons that would have been used in battle in the 13th Century and we loved trying them on and pretending we were fighting in Robert the Bruce’s army! The guides were excellent at sharing tactics the armies used for battle-which prepared us for when we entered the We were also treated to a fabulous (and slightly scary) 3D experience where we felt what it would have been like to be fighting in the battle of Bannockburn.  Then we were taken to the battle room where we used everything we had learned to recreate the battle of Bannockburn.  Finally we got the chance to go outside to the real battle site and feel what it was like to be part of a schiltron.  We had a great day and it was a great way to learn about part of the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Primary Five 3rd March 2017

This week we have been presenting class talks about life in the 13th Century- Well done to everyone who has done this so far.  Some of these may need to be carried over to next week but we hope to have them all completed by Monday.

We have been continuing our Topic of Scottish Wars of Independence and we are really enjoying learning about how the wars started-next week we will be looking at William Wallace and the role he played in the wars.  On March 14th we will be having a  class trip to the Bannockburn Visitors Centre.  This is a fantastic opportunity for the children to learn more about their topic in fun and interactive ways, including trying on some of the armour that soldiers may have used and taking part in a mock battle.  Letters should reach parents today- we are asking for two parent helpers for this trip so if you are available and have a disclosure please get in touch with the office.

Reminders-

Monday- Spelling Homework

Tues/Wed- Maths

Thurs- indoor PE

Fri- Outdoor PE

P5 17th February 2017

We have had a great week this week in P5 despite not being at Benmore! We have loved hearing the updates from Mr Shanks and seeing the pictures but we have also been very busy working on some special additions to our classroom.  This week we have worked on a challenge to design and create life sized soldiers complete with armour and weapons that a 13th Century soldier would have had.  We first researched the weapons that they used and made leaflets on Publisher, then we got to work creating our soldier.  We have had great fun drawing round each other and then adding on swords, axes, shields and other weapons we found out about through our research.  These have now been displayed around the classroom and some are looking particularly fierce! Next week will be back to normal timetable with reminders as follows-

Monday- spelling/ reading homework

Wednesday- Maths homework

Thursday- Indoor gym kit

Friday- Outdoor gym kit.

Remember that big homework is due week beginning 27th February.

We hope you all have a restful weekend and manage to recharge your batteries after your exciting time at Benmore!

Mrs Steel

Primary Five 13.1.17

This week we have been doing some dictionary and thesaurus work in language along with the start of some note-taking activities.  This is in preparation for us starting some non-fiction work based on The Scottish Wars of Independence.

We have looked at our Topic and the children have had a chance to talk about what they know and what they would like to find out.  We are really looking forward to starting this topic next week!

To start the Topic we will be looking at timelines and children have been sent home with a little bit of homework this weekend to discuss the ‘Timeline of their life’.  We would be grateful if you could talk to your children (and make some notes if you like) about the main things that have happened in their lives so they can place them on a timeline.  This is to help them understand the concept of a timeline as things that have happened in the past.

The children have all now got a Scottish poem to learn to present to the class.  The children are all really excited about this and we would be grateful if you could keep practising these at home.

Things to remember for next week-

Monday- Spelling and Reading homework

Tues/Wed- Maths homework

Thurs- Indoor gym kit

Fri- no outdoor gym due to Burn’s Assembly

Primary 6 04.11.16

Hello!

We have had a very busy week in Primary 6. On Monday we started to learn a song for a Scottish Assembly which will be taking place when our ERASMUS+ visitors arrive in a couple of weeks time. We are learning “You’re Welcome Wullie Stewart” a song written by Robert Burns about the arrival of his best friend. The children have received the words home with them. Please encourage them to learn their words by Monday.

We have started our new Interdisciplinary Topic of Europe. The children have been using Atlases to complete a variety of tasks to help them to gain a better understanding of the geography of the continent. The children are now working in groups using their research skills to create a poster about a European Country for our classroom display. The children have made a great start to these posters and Mrs Kelly and I are looking forward to seeing the finished products! We will also be using our writing session next week to write letters to our European Visitors; telling them about our country and asking them questions about their own. We are looking forward to our visitors reading our letters and replying!

All groups in maths have begun work on multiplication and division in class. Please encourage your child to practise their times tables at home as knowledge of these facts can help them to access many other more complex areas of maths in the future. Thank you for your support with this. Here is a useful website that can help the children to practise their times tables and division facts:

Primary Five 23rd September 2016

This week we have been completing a challenge on the map of GB and NI.  We have researched the 4 different countries, labelled the main features on the map and had a look at some famous landmarks.  This will be built on next week when we look at landmarks in more detail-look out for Big Homework going out on Monday.

PE has changed from next week.  Children will need PE on a Tuesday for FUTSAL and a Wednesday for PE with Miss Inglis.  We will update you when this changes again.

Primary 6 15.9.16

Hello everyone

Primary 6 have had a busy week learning more about the Industrial Revolution. The children learned about the move for many people from the countryside into cities and the problems that were created by cramped tenement housing. We then created our own “City Landscape” at the back of the Primary 6 classrooms which looks fantastic!

In writing this week the children created their own “magic box” and thought about all the magical and exciting things they could put into their box. The children then worked very hard to write fantastic poetry based on their boxes. Well done!

In ICT, Mr Shanks introduced both classes to software called “Kodu”. This software enables us to create our own simple computer games using some visual programming language. The children thoroughly enjoyed becoming familiar with this software; controlling their own characters and developing their own unique worlds. We look forward to learning more in the coming weeks.

You should receive a letter today about our trip to New Lanark.  We are planning on making this visit on Thursday 29th September.  The cost of this trip is £5.50 per child and should be returned to the school with a completed EE2 form as soon as possible. Children should come prepared with their own packed lunch as we are not expected to arrive back to school until around 2:30pm. If any parents with a full disclosure are able to help out with this trip then please let the office know as soon as possible. Thank you in advance!

A quick reminder that this weekend is a holiday weekend. The children should return to school on Wednesday prepared with PE kit and appropriate shoes for participating in Cross Country.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Miss Clark, Mrs Kelly & Mrs Wylie.

Primary Five 15th September 2016

This week we have started work on our United Kingdom topic.  We  discussed the things that we would like to find out about the UK and the kind of activities the children would like to include alongside the activities already planned.   We have started working on a challenge about the map of the UK finding out about major cities, towns, mountains, rivers etc.  We hope to have these finished next week for display in the classroom.  Watch out for a BIG HOMEWORK coming soon!

In Language we have been redrafting our ‘Magic Whistle’ stories that we have been writing.  We have had great fun coming up with ideas for how we could use these to help people in trouble.

Mr Greig’s Maths group have been doing some revision this week while Mrs Steel’s group have been looking at Data Handling.

In Health we have been looking at the exercise we like and how it makes us feel after.

Reminders for next week:

Monday/Tuesday-Holiday

In Writing we learned about the legend of Robert the Bruce and the spider and made comic strips to show the story.  We will be displaying these in the corridor at the office so if you are in be sure to have a look.

In Health we have started our bullying topic.  This week we talked about peer pressure, what this means and what we should do if we feel people are trying to force us to do things.

Next week we will be starting our Science topic of Solids, Liquids and Gases.  This will be a good chance for us to take part in some experiments.

Next week children will need indoor gym kit on Tuesday only for FUTSAL.

Primary Five 26th February

This week we have been learning about Robert the Bruce and the Battle of Bannockburn.  We have watched a short film about his life and made notes while we watched.  We used these to write a report about Robert the Bruce.  Next week we will be finishing off the Topic and recapping what we have learned.

In Maths one group have started work on data handling.  They have made bar graphs and this work will be continuing next week.  The other group have been working on area and are now moving on to time.

Next Thursday (3rd March) Primary 3 are organising World World Day.  Children can come dressed up as a character from their favourite book.  We look forward to seeing what you all come up with.

Please remember indoor gym kit on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Primary Five 19th February 2016

This week more than half the stage are away at Benmore so the rest of the boys and girls have been taking part in some work based around our Topic.  We have been working on a challenge to make a life sized 13th Century Knight complete with armour and weapons.  This has been great fun and we will be displaying these around the classroom for the other boys and girls to see when they return.

Natasha Kadi Faith Natalia Aleigha Ellie Sarah Leoni Robyn

We have also been using some of the skills we have learned in ICT to create a leaflet.  We are using Publisher to make an information leaflet about weapons that the Knights would have used in their battles.  We look forward to sharing these with the Benmore boys and girls too.

We are all excited to hear about the boys and girls adventures next week and hopefully see some pictures of what they have been up to.

Thank you

Mrs Steel

29th January 2016

This week we have had a chance to showcase our talents at the Burn’s afternoon for our visitors.  They really enjoyed our stage singing ‘Scotland Forever’ and well done to Megan and Ammad for performing ‘Scots Wha Hae’ again after winning the class competition last Friday.

In Topic this week we have been learning about the events before and after Alexander III’s death and how this affected Scotland in the lead up to the Wars of Independence.   We have been writing our own interviews with Alexander’s widow and next week we will be writing newspaper reports.

In Maths this week some of us have been completing a Times Table challenge to create posters for the classroom.  Other work we have been covering includes division and fractions.  Please remember it is a good idea to keep practising times tables with your child whenever you can.

Next Tuesday we will be going to Bannockburn Visitors Centre for a trip based around our Interdisciplinary topic.  We are looking forward to learning more about the Scottish Wars of Independence while we are there. Please remember to send back your child’s EE2 form if you have not already done so.

Big homework is also due next week.  We will not be able to hear everyone’s talk on Monday so we will spread these out throughout the week.

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary Five January 15th 2016

This week we have been continuing to introduce our new Topic and have been learning about what life was like in the 13th Century.  In groups we have been comparing life in a Burgh, a Castle and in the Countryside.  This is in preparation for starting a challenge next week where we will be making a PowerPoint about these things.

Reading and Writing this week have also focussed on Topic and we have been using non-fiction books to help us with our research.

We will shortly be sending out a Big Homework task for the children to complete so watch out for this in homework diaries.  We hope the children will enjoy completing this as it will play a part in our parent Assembly in February.

In Maths all groups have been working on multiplication.  We would appreciate it if you could continue to practise multiplication facts with your child at home.

Next week both classes will be starting a block of football training on a Tuesday so can we ask for indoor gym kits to be provided on a Tuesday and a Thursday this term.

Thank you for your support
