Primary 7 25.11.16

Hello,

We have had yet another busy week in Primary 7.

This week in writing primary 7 researched the effects of smoking and created informative leaflets using Publisher. The children worked really hard on these leaflets which will be displayed in the classroom.

The pupils’ Christmas lunch will be taking place next Thursday (1st December). Primary 7s will help to run this, and of course, enjoy their Christmas lunch!

During Enterprise the children have been busy creating Christmas crafts, organising workshops and games for the Christmas Fair. They will continue to do so next week in preparation for Friday 2nd December. Primary 7 are looking forward to running their  stalls at the Christmas Fair.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Wilson & Mrs Gilmour

Primary 7 18.11.16

Hello, Bonjour, Ciao, Zdraveite, Ahoj, Cxesc !

We have had a busy week with our ERASMUS visitors. The children have been learning a variety of words in French, Italian, Bulgarian, Slovakian and Polish. Their pronunciation was very good! We noticed a few similarities between many of the words. The children in the choir and the house captains attended a very successful evening of Scottish entertainment on Thursday evening. The choir sang a selection of Scottish songs and they were outstanding! Our ERASMUS visitors gave them a standing ovation at the very end. The children then led the visitors in a variety of ceilidh dances. A great time was had by all.

The children had their final visit from WLDAS with the focus on smoke free homes and zones. Please return the pledge form by Monday 21st November if you wish to participate in this.

We have started our Enterprise topic. The children have decided if they would like to organise games or sell goods at the Christmas Fair. They will be working on this for the next two weeks. Please can you ensure your child has checked with their teacher before spending any money on resources for their chosen Enterprise activity as the school are often able to provide these cheaper than if the are bought in the shops.

We have noticed that many children are coming to school with no jacket or just a thin cotton hoody. Please be aware the children are outdoors on many occasions and so it is very important that they have  a waterproof jacket with them every day. A gentle reminder that the children have PE on a Monday and Wednesday and require kit for both of these days.

The children will be working on their My life so far in school until Christmas on a Thursday. Thank you for all the support that you have given your child so far. They are looking fabulous!

Reminders:

Hello to all,

We had a visit from West Lothian drug and Alcohol Services on Monday where the children learned about the dangers of smoking. The children were given a task to research some of the different chemicals found in cigarettes which will be used in their lesson next week.

The children have started a Remembrance challenge. They have been learning about how different countries commemorate Remembrance and the significance of poppies and war memorials. The children have put a lot of effort into their challenge and we look forward to seeing the completed displays!

On Tuesday Primary 7 went to DCHS for a transition morning where they got to experience a range of lessons including PE, Art, Maths and Science. The children had a great experience and are looking forward to their next transition visit.

On Wednesday afternoon Mr Anderson from the music department at DCHS visited primary 7 to practise the song we will be singing at the High School Christmas concert.

Today selected pupils will be attending the Sportshall Athletics event at Craigswood Sports centre. Check the blog next week to find out how they got on!

Reminders:

Spelling homework each night

Maths homework

Continue to learn song words

Both classes will need outdoor PE kit on Monday

PE with Miss Inglis on Wednesday

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Wilson & Mrs Gilmour

Primary 7 – 9.9.16

Primary 7 have had another really busy week this week.

In science we have been learning all about the structure of the Earth. We focused on the 4 main layers and found out the properties of each one. Next week we will be looking at different types of rock and how these are formed.

We have been learning about internet safety and the importance of telling an adult if something worries us.

For our topic we found out where Scotland and Japan are on the world map. We have been busy identifying some of the main features of each country including rivers, mountains, seas and cities.  We have also been looking at the differences and similarities of land use between Japan and Scotland. We will be learning about some of the key industries in Japan and using our knowledge to create a collage.

Next week we look forward to some visitors from the Japanese Society. Check out blog next week to see what we found out!

Reminders:

Outdoor PE – Monday (weather permitting)

Indoor PE – Wednesday

Please ensure your child brings their PE kit on the correct days

Homework:

Spelling homework – Due Friday 16th

Topic homework – Due Thursday 15th

Guinness World Record Djembe Performance

You may recall just before the end of term, a large group of our Primary 7 children took part in the Guinness World Record Attempt to have the largest Djembe Ensemble.  We are very proud to report that the attempt was successful and many school children in West Lothian, including Carmondean PS, are now officially world record holders for this event. You can watch the You Tube video of the attempt by clicking the link below.

Guinness World Record Attempt

Important information for Primary 7!

We hope Primary 7 have had a great transition week up at Deans Community High School. We can’t believe how quickly this term has gone and that our time with you is almost at an end. Although we only have a week and a half left at school we still have so much to do P7! So we look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday with a hard-working and motivated attitude.

Some important points to remember:
– Please continue to practise our Leavers assembly songs over the weekend. You should know all of the words by Monday.
– If you have any lines to learn for the assembly please also continue to practise them.
– If you are part of the drama section of the assembly – please begin to think about your costumes! Please don’t feel the need to buy anything new but feel free have a rummage in your cupboards over the weekend.
– Our dress rehearsal is on Thursday afternoon when we are performing in front of the Primary 2 and 3 classes.
– Our Leavers Assembly is on Monday 27th June beginning at 1:30pm. Parents &  other adults – please let the office know if you are planning on attending.
– P7 Prom is next Tuesday (28th June!) All of the teacher invites you created have been distributed. If you still need to buy a ticket or would like professional photos taken at the event please let the office know next week.

Have a lovely weekend Primary 7! We are looking forward to seeing you on Monday and hearing all your exciting news 🙂

West Lothian Young Writer, 2016

IMG_0121

It was another very proud moment for Carmondean Primary School and for one of its pupils tonight at the 41st West Lothian Young Writer Awards. Although many young stars shone brightly throughout the evening, it was our own Joy Koay (Primary 7) who outshone them all to become West Lothian Young Writer, 2016. Here she is receiving her prize from the current West Lothian Reader in Residence, Mr Harry Giles, who gave a dramatic rendition of Joy’s work to the assembled audience. Ms Millar was also called up onto the stage to accept the Young Writer Shield on behalf of Carmondean P.S.  This was certainly the proudest of proud moments for Joy and her family and for our school. In the audience was world renowned writer and illustrator Nick Sharratt (Illustrator of many Jacqueline Wilson books, amongst others), and he clapped as loudly as the rest of the audience when Joy was presented – praise indeed! Well done, Joy, on behalf of everyone at Carmondean P.S.  And remember … Keep Writing!

Primary 7 10.6.16

Hello everyone

We have been very busy this week getting organised for our Leavers Assembly. The children have been practising hard and can’t wait for their parents and the rest of the school to see the final performance. The Leavers Assembly will be on Monday 27th June beginning at 1:30pm. If you have not requested tickets yet you can do so at the office next week. We hope to see you all there!
Children should ensure that they spend next week memorising any lines that they have and also learning the words to the three songs that we will be performing. It is vitally important that the children practise next week as we will have our first performance in front of an audience (the Primary 2s and 3s) on Thursday 23rd June.

Next week the majority of the children will take part in a transition week at Deans Community High School. The children should come to Carmondean in the morning for a normal 8:50am start. Miss Farren & I will then walk the children up to DCHS for a 9:30am start. Children should wear their Carmondean uniforms. On Monday however the children will be taking part in the “Hurricane Challenge” and should wear trainers and bring a waterproof jacket in case of bad weather. The children should go straight to Deans on Tuesday-Friday mornings for a 8:35am start. We are sure that the children will represent the school and themselves very well and that they will enjoy getting to meet their new classmates. We look forward to hearing how they get on.

On Friday 24th June the school is hosting a Technologies Open Morning. You will have the opportunity to come into the school to look at your children’s best work that they have chosen to put in their learning journals. You will then also have the opportunity to go to the school hall and look at the new technology equipment that the school has invested in. Parents of children in P7F can visit the school between 9:30-10:30am. Parents of children in P7C can visit the school between 11:15am-12:15pm. We would love to see as many of you there as possible.

Children who are attending other High Schools and are not going to the DCHS transition week will be able to complete a variety of work related to our Leavers Assembly. They will also have the opportunity to work with other teachers and younger classes in the school, assisting with their learning.

Have a great weekend!

Miss Clark & Miss Farren

Primary 7 3rd June 2016

This week has been busy and exciting for Primary 7! We have been working cooperatively in groups to complete a Bulgaria Challenge. Throughout this activity we are learning about Bulgaria’s traditions and history. Challenges help us develop our ability to compromise and work with people we may not always choose to work with. Each member within the group has their own responsibility. This might be as a facilitator or a time keeper but we all have an important role to play.

Also this week we have created a script for our leavers assembly. We cannot believe it is only a few weeks away but we are very excited to showcase an exciting trip down memory lane. Please remember to order your tickets ASAP as leavers assemblies are very popular as you can imagine!

Mr Shanks worked with half of us teaching us how to use an app on the ipads called Garage Band. We were taught how to use the app effectively and the final product was we created our own music! It was very cool! Continuing with a musical theme…We are now GUINESS WORLD RECORD HOLDERS. 27 of us attended Livingston Football Stadium on Thursday along with Miss Farren, Mrs Harding and Mrs Auld. There were 476 pupils from across West Lothian participating in the event and we played a drumming sequence for just over 6 minutes. We were shocked at how strict the judging criteria were but we were thrilled when they announced that we had broken a new record! Miss Farren was extremely proud of all who attended the event, the behaviour and enthusiasm was fantastic, we were a credit to our class and school.

Next week please remember to submit final copies of My Life So Far.

It is also the Beach Trip on Wednesday and we will be hopefully enjoying some fun in the sun! Please remember that if it is a warm day then apply sun lotion before coming to school and you can send it with your child in their bags to apply themselves throughout the day. Staff cannot put the sun lotion on your child or supply them with lotion. A packed lunch will be required as we are away all day.

Have a fantastic weekend whatever your plans may be!

Miss Farren, Miss Clark and P7

Back to normality in Primary 7 after our adventures in France!

This week in P.E we have enjoyed Judo taster sessions and learned a few new skills. We also continued to work cooperatively in Hockey and are playing 5 v 5 games. In Science we have enjoyed a very active lesson where we had to dissect a flower then create a labelled poster to demonstrate our knowledge.

For those children participating in the drumming for excellence workshop, can you please familiarise yourself with your pattern of music and bring you music to school every day next week. We have rehearsals and our final workshop coming up.

Our Prom Committee have now begun working with Mrs. Gilmour to organise the theme for our celebration evening. It is all getting exciting in Primary 7.

Next week we have a visit from DCHS to look forward to. They will be teaching us Science and showing us some new ICT sites. We are all looking forward to this.

A big thank you and good bye to Miss Walker who has been teaching P7F recently. She is now off to complete her studies and we wish her lots of luck for her future in teaching!

Happy long weekend! See you all Tuesday!

Miss Farren and Miss Clark

13.5.16 Primary 7

Hello

Well as you know, primary 7 went a little animal daft this week and were involved in various animal activities throughout the week. We concluded the week with an animal movie of their choice and some animal origami before Free Time Friday. The children requested “The Jungle Book” so we spent the morning singing and dancing to the music. Children have now completed their animal fact files which look fantastic – well done for all your hard work everyone!!

Overall, we have had a very fun and busy week. We are looking forward to Monday and hearing all about France when everyone comes back together.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Walker and Primary 7.

See you soon!

This post was written last night at around 5pm (12.5.16). However due to terrible wifi we were unable to post. We have just docked at Hull and will see you all this afternoon 🙂

Bonjour! Thank you once again for all of your lovely comments. The children enjoy hearing them all at breakfast.

Today we left the hotel for the final time. Craig really enjoyed the food at the hotel while Erin thought that her bed was very comfortable.

Our first stop was Nausicaa, the sea life centre. Nathan enjoyed looking at lots of seahorses and sharks while Jay liked watching the Penguins swimming underneath the water. We watched a film in 4D where our faces were splashed and our hair was blown around furiously! The gift shop in Nausicaa was fantastic! Many presents were purchased. Jay has now acquired a soft toy great white shark called Stephen who will be a great addition to the family I am sure!

Next we drove out of France and into Belgium where we stopped in town of Ypres. We visited a glorious chocolate shop where everyone purchased some delicious treats! The chocolate shop owner was even able to give us some special money off deals!

We then went to see the Menin Gate. It is a memorial to soldiers who died in the First World War who have no known graves. We each got a poppy to stick next to one of the names on the Menin Gate. This was a touching moment for us all.

We are now sitting in the ferry terminal as we write this waiting to go into our rooms for our final night before home. We are looking forward to dinner and disco before bed.

The children have had an amazing week but are very excited to see you all again!

See you soon everyone!

Aujourd’hui mai 11!

Bonjour!

Thank you all for commenting on our past posts. They are all lovely and we enjoyed reading yesterday’s comments at breakfast this morning.

We spent the day at Bagatelle Theme Park. It was easy to get around and we didn’t have to queue for that long for any of the rides. It was rather cloudy in the morning but later on in the afternoon it was extremely hot and sunny (around 24 degrees!)

Here are some of our favourite moments from the Theme Park:

Becky: “I enjoyed taking Miss Clark on the Famous Jack ride and the flume. It was funny because she screamed the whole way round!”

Lewis T: “I enjoyed the Triops ride the most. Your legs were able to swing in the air and you went upside down loads of times!”

Leanna: “My favourite ride was the log flume. I got soaked!! But I still went on it 7 times!”

Claire: “I really enjoyed the Famous Jack ride too. It spun you around lots of times and Miss Clark’s screaming could be heard for miles!”

Some other funny moments include… Megan accidentally dunking her foot into the river on the water ride, Mrs Gilmour and Mrs Wotherspoon getting stuck on a broken ride and having to be rescued, the clown that played games with us and Miss Farren screaming constantly!

We also managed to buy some presents for our relatives at home at the theme park and are excited to give them to you!

We are looking forward to our final day in France and Belgium tomorrow, visiting Nausicaa, the Menin gate in Ypres and some chocolate shops (yum, yum!)

Au revoir mes amies!

At the end of a fun-filled, action packed day!

11.5.16 Primary 7

Good Afternoon

We had a very busy morning today and the children undertook a variety of activities relating to animal food chains. First of all, children designed their own “super animals” which had to be adapted to suit their environment. We had glow in the dark honey foot lemurs with bat wings and sharks with scorpion tails to name a few – very creative! We learned about how energy flows throughout food chains and the importance of having a top predator. The children engaged in food chain drama to showcase their understanding of food chains and the consequence of removing one species from the chain (lots of lions and gazelles in the classroom)! We also had a lot of discussion regarding the impact of humans on our wildlife. The children were then given time to continue with their research projects (animal fact files) which are looking fantastic – excellent work everyone!

This afternoon, primary 7 had lots of fun in P.E where they played basketball and spent the last hour out in the sun playing games and organising events for sports day.

It sounds like those in France are having a fabulous, busy time! We would like to ask you about your time at the theme park and what your favourite rides were?

All of primary 7 say HELLO and we hope you have a fantastic day at the theme park!!

Miss Walker and Primary 7

Bonjour tout le monde!

Thank you for reading our last update. We all loved reading the many comments you left us yesterday and today. Please keep commenting on our daily updates!

Thank you for your questions Primary 7! After dinner we have been enjoying doing different things. On Sunday night we went to the disco on the ferry. Yesterday, we went to the local park. Today, we are relaxing in our rooms after a very busy day. We are normally in our bedrooms for 9:30pm and lights out are at 9:45pm. This morning we woke up at 7:30 but tomorrow we have a long lie until 8am!! We are glad you are having a good week. We can’t wait to see you all next Monday and hear all your stories!

Today we have had a very busy, but interesting day. We started off by visiting L’Etaple cemetery. We were surprised as to how vast it was. Keston found the visit very educational as we were able to find out lots from the gravestones about the soldiers and civilians who had died. We found it interesting that the graves of the German soldiers weren’t so well kept.

We then travelled for about 2 hours on the bus to reach the Somme area. Our first stop was La Grande Mine. The crater was huge. It was caused by 27 tons of explosives set off by British soldiers who wanted to defeat Germans. The children all thought that the names on the walkway around the crater were very interesting as they told more information about soldiers who fought at that time.

Next we visited the nearby village of Contalmaison where we visited the McCrae Battalion Memorial (commonly known as the Hearts Memorial). Sam Tischler and Molly felt very honoured to be given the opportunity to place the school wreath on the memorial. Both Sam and Molly describe the experience as very memorable and touching.

Then we had our lunch at Thiepval. Sandy thought the memorial, for those who were never found during the Battle of the Somme, very beautiful as poppies regularly rained down from the top of the memorial. Sandy & Keston were convinced that they had found some long lost relatives on the memorial.

On our way to Ulster Tower we stopped off at Beaumont Hamel where we saw a memorial to Canadian and Scottish fallen soldiers among many others. We were surprised to find a Caribou atop of the Canadian Memorial!

Our last stop of the day was Ulster Tower. We were given a tour around the Thiepval Wood Trenches by a very knowledgable tour guide called Teddy. He showed us various trenches that were built by Scottish soldiers. We loved that the trenches were named after famous Scottish streets and cities (e.g. Inverness Avenue, George Street and Union Street). It was a truly emotional and humbling experience.

We are now back at our hotel after enjoying a lovely 3 course dinner. Please keep leaving comments, we love reading them.

Bon nuit!

10.5.16 Primary 7

Hello

So lovely to hear from those in France. Today in school we learned about animal adaptations and began a new mini challenge where we are creating animal fact files. We hope to continue this and complete these throughout the week. We then spent our afternoon out in the sun assisting primary 1 with sports day preparation and then playing rounders with primary 3. We all had great fun!!

Primary 7 would like to say hi to those in France. We have worked out that “Il fait chaud” means “it is hot” but we have no need to be jealous as the sun is shining here too 🙂

We have some questions from the class:

What activities are you getting up to after dinner time?

What time are you going to bed?

What time are you having to get up in the morning?

We hope you are having a blast and miss you all loads! Looking forward to hearing all your stories when you get back.
Miss Walker

Primary 7 9.5.16

Hello everyone!

Just a wee update to let you all know what the primary 7s are up to in school this week.

Today we began our new mini topic – Animal biodiversity and adaptations. The children learned about the 6 main animal groups; mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and insects. We learned about their key characteristics and how we can identify them. The platypus proved to be difficult! We also used classification keys to identify a series of invertebrates and also made our own keys to identify a group of insects.

This afternoon, we created signage for the school leavers’ assembly. This involved making signs as well as stars to decorate the stage.  Tomorrow we will continue with our new mini topic and learn about animal adaptation.

The children have some questions they would like to ask those who are in France:

How is the weather?

What is the food like?

Finally, the children would like to say “we hope no one was sick on the ferry and that you all have an amazing time!”

Miss Walker

Primary 7 6.5.16

Hello everyone!

We have had a short but very busy week since the children returned to school.

The children are continuing to work on their High School Profiles in class. Children write about how they feel they have developed throughout Primary School in these areas: leadership, team skills, research and planning, problem solving and communication. These profiles will be passed on to each child’s high school before the end of the session. We are pleased with how they look so far. Keep up the good work P7!

We have been continuing with our new topic of Economically Less Developed Countries (ELDC) this week. We have been exploring the importance of access to clean drinking water and how this one factor can have a profound effect on whole countries. We explored the rights that we have in Scotland and compared our lives to those who live in ELDC. The children made impressive rights posters to show their knowledge.

Soon, as part of the ERASMUS+ Project, Primary 7 will be exploring the country of Bulgaria in more detail. Miss Clark will be sharing her experiences of the country and the children will be researching the country’s culture and traditions as part of a mini project. We will keep you posted on our progress!

This weekend some of the children will depart on our France Residential. The children are very excited and I am sure the trip will be a success. Miss Walker has an exciting week planned for all of the children staying at Carmondean, including lots of PE, trips down to P1 and an exciting mini topic. Miss Farren & I can’t wait to hear what they have been doing whilst we are away!

We will keep you posted of our movements in France by writing on the blog on some nights during the week. Feel free to leave comments as we know the children will love reading them 🙂

Au revoir!

Miss Clark & Miss Farren

29.04.16 Primary 7 update

This week Primary 7 have been busy preparing work that we will showcase at our Leavers Assembly. Children have been working together to write a song and have also wrote letters to their favourite members of staff.

It was our last session of P.E with Deans Community High School this week. I think it is safe to say that this was a very positive experience for all pupils.

30 children took part in the first drumming workshop of this term and will continue working with Miss Farren each week to ensure we can play the new composed piece of music for 5 minutes in sync… (No pressure at all!) They will each receive a copy of the music patterns and can practice these in their own time. Click on the links below to see our progress so far!

Thank you to all the children who returned their My Life So Far project. Many have been completed to an exceptional standard. Both Miss Clark and I enjoyed reading them and they even brought a wee tear to our eyes. Can those who have not handed in their project please do so next week. Thank you.

Have a lovely long weekend!!

Miss Farren and Miss Clark
