Sports Day update – Raeburn in the lead

Good morning everyone.

Well done to everyone who has submitted sports day results so far. There is still plenty time to take part so  COME ON Deer Park, Raeburn, Sutherland and Waverley.  Raeburn are in the lead at the moment so if you don’t want them to be winners you’d better get scoring points for your house.

I was delighted to see photos of some P1s taking part in their first primary school sports day.  Can you do as well as them?  I’d love to see some more photos.

Good morning everyone. I hope you enjoyed watching our video yesterday. I’m delighted to see that some of you have completed your sports day already and manged to submit your results.  Deer Park, Raeburn and Waverley already have points in the bag for their house,  so come on Sutherland complete the sports day activities and submit your results.

PE 2.6 challenges

Good morning everyone. I hope you have been keeping active at home. I’m sure this lovely weather will be helping with that.

Did you know that the London Marathon was meant to take place this Sunday , 26th April? Maybe you knew someone who was going to be taking part or you know someone who has completed this endurance running event  in the past.  It will hopefully take place later on this year.

A marathon distance is 26.2 miles. That’s like running from Livingston to Stirling Castle ( Wow!) Since no one can run the marathon this weekend some of the charities involved with the marathon have decided to set a 2 point six challenge and I’d like you to see if you can do any of these challenges?

Primary 4 learning from home update

Hello everyone. We hope you are keeping safe.  During the time school is closed we will be communicating via Teams. Many of you have already logged on to Teams which is great. Here are the logging in instructions for Teams just in case you don’t have them.

  1. Search for ‘West Lothian Glow’ site and log on to Glow. If you do not have your username and password for Glow please email the school.
  2. When logged onto Glow go into email.
  3. When in email you will see an email inviting you to join Teams. Please click on it and follow the instructions.
  4. Once you have set up, you can access Teams ongoing by clicking on the square of 9 WHITE dots at the top left hand side and selecting Teams.

Primary 4 12.3.20

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy and fun week in Primary 4. It is great to be all back together in our classes again.

This week we have been celebrating Sport Relief. Primary 6 have been coming around the school selling wristbands and we also had an excellent PE session yesterday organised by Primary 6! It really tested our endurance and stamina but it was lots of fun! Tomorrow the children can come to school dressed in their sporty clothes (please no football shirts) for a 50p donation. We will also go outside and take part in the weekly mile as part of our celebrations.

In RME this week we have been learning about the Christian celebration of Baptism. We learned why baptism is important to Christians, the important people who take part in a baptism service and what happens during the service. We created our own dramas based on baptism and performed them to the rest of the class – they were great! In writing, we wrote an explanation piece telling others everything we have learned about baptism – well done P4!

Rehearsals for our class assembly have continued this week. Thank you for all your support in helping the children to learn their lines. Our assembly will take place in the large hall at 9:10am next Tuesday 17th March. If you can attend please return the form in your child’s school bag to let us know. We look forward to seeing you then 🙂

Reminders –
Homework was given out on Wednesday and is due in on Monday 23rd March. All starred activities should be completed. This will be the last piece of homework handed out before the Easter holidays.

Our PE days are changing – Indoor PE will take place on a Monday and Outdoor PE will be on a Tuesday for P4M and a Thursday for P4C. Please ensure your child comes to school with appropriate PE kit and their own water bottle. Thank you.

News from Lendrick Muir!

Hi everyone,

We are having a great time at Lendrick Muir.  We’ve done lots of activities already but still have lots of energy left for our evening activity. We have been in four activity groups and each group has done two activities today and will do another two tomorrow.

The activities are:

  • Gorge walk
  • Leap of faith (climbing up a high pole and jumping off into the air)
  • Bushcraft (making fires!)
  • Nightline (a blindfold walk)

We’ve answered Miss Clark and the rest of P4’s questions in their blog post which will give you more information about what we have enjoyed and what Lendrick Muir is like.

Primary 4 3.3.20

Hello everyone!

This week is very exciting in Primary 4 as some of us have gone to Lendrick Muir to stay overnight on our residential. We are writing because we are still in school. We would like to hear how the boys and girls are getting on at Lendrick Muir. We also want to tell them what we’re doing and ask them some questions.

We started the day by making props for our Primary 4 assembly. We all got a chance to create and decorate one prop. You will see these props on Tuesday 17th March during our assembly. We hope you can come 🙂 We then had a check in to find out more about each other since we are a mixture of pupils from both classes.

We spent the rest of our day working on designing and creating characters for our stop motion animations. We watched a famous stop motion animation (Wallace and Gromit – The Wrong Trousers) to see how stop motion animation is made. We created a super hero, a super villain and 2 other characters as well as backdrops and storyboards to plan our stop motion animations. We will make these tomorrow by taking photos on the iPads of our characters and backdrops. We can’t wait to see how they turn out! Miss Clark is very impressed with how hard the boys and girls have been working. Excellent team work! 🙂

Primary 4 27.2.20

Hello everyone

This week has been an exciting week. The boys and girls loved having family members in our classrooms on Tuesday afternoon and again this morning supporting them with their learning. Remember all of the children have their Education City passwords in their homework jotters and they can access games and activities at home as well as in school. Thank you to everyone who came to our shared start and finish this week.

Next week many of the children are looking forward to their residential trip to Lendrick Muir on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please remember that any medicines that the children require should be handed into the school office with the appropriate form as soon as possible. We are sure that the children will have the best time! The children staying with Miss Clark will also be having lots of fun. We will be creating our very own stop motion animations on the iPads as well as creating props for our assembly and spending time outdoors for an extra long PE session with Mrs Ferguson. It is sure to be an exciting week!

Preparations for our Primary 4 assembly are well underway. If your child has a speaking role then their lines are in their homework jotters. Please support your child in learning their lines at home. Each child has a role in our assembly and we will be practising lots in class over the next couple of weeks. Parents and families are invited into school to watch our assembly on Tuesday 17th March at 9am. You will receive a letter home about this in due course.

Homework – starred activities are due in on Monday 9th March.
Sports relief wristbands will cost £1 and will begin to be sold on Monday.
Next Thursday (5th March) is World Book Day. Please can each child bring their favourite book to school on this day. This book can be fiction, non fiction, a comic, annual – anything! We will complete various activities related to our books throughout the day.

Primary 4 13.2.20

Hello everyone

It has been a fun week in Primary 4. This week in maths we have been learning all about Roman numerals. We learned that Roman numerals are made of 7 different letters and how to use our numeracy skills to help to add different symbols together to make new numbers. Ask your child what they know 🙂

It was lovely to meet so many parents on Tuesday and Wednesday evening at parents consultation evenings. We look forward to welcoming parents back to into school on Tuesday 25th February at 2:50pm for our shared finish and on Thursday 27th February at 9:05am for our shared start. The focus of these sessions will be using the website Education City. Each session will be similar so you only need to attend one.

In French we have begun to learn about the items in our classroom. We drew our classrooms and labelled each object in French. Can your child tell the difference between un gomme and une trousse?

Please note that the children are on holiday tomorrow (Friday 14th) until next Wednesday 19th February. We will have PE as normal with Mrs Ferguson on Wednesday. We will also have an extra visit from NYCoS on Thursday for our singing lessons.

Primary 4 6.2.20

Hello everyone

Primary 4 have had a busy but fun week! In Science we have been learning about water. Our focus this week was the oceans and plastic pollution. The children worked individually, in pairs or in groups to design their own plastic collection inventions that could be used underwater to collect plastic. We had so many amazing ideas! The children then worked together to build their inventions and make them into reality using lego. They look fantastic, well done boys and girls.

In Numeracy we have been continuing to learn about fractions. This week our focus has turned to equivalent fractions. We learned that equivalent means equal or the same and the children have been using pictures and materials to explore fractions that are written differently but are the same size. Next week we will begin to explore written ways to work out equivalent fractions.

We are continuing to enjoy NYCoS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) lessons each Monday morning. The children have been learning concepts such as rhythm, beat, pitch and even learning how to read some musical notes! Ask your child what they have been learning at home 🙂

In Health we have been learning about how to stay safe while online. We learned about the story of Chicken Clickin’ who made lots of mistakes when using the Internet. The children were confident when identifying her mistakes and making suggestions for what she could have done differently. We will continue to learn more about how to be a good digital citizen next week.

Parents consultations take place next Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February. Please contact the office to book an appointment if you haven’t done so already. We look forward to speaking to many of you then.

Primary 4 17.1.20

It’s been another busy week in primary 4!  On Monday we had another lesson with NYCOS (The National Youth Choir of Scotland).  We were learning all about rhythm and learning lots of new songs.

In numeracy we’ve been working on fractions and trying to work out which fractions are bigger than others and in maths we’ve been interpreting lots of different types of graphs and charts.

Last term we were working on persuasive writing and we are now looking at how to write instructions.  This week we created instructions for a disgusting sandwich and some of the sandwiches were very creative.  There were a lot of slugs, slime and mouldy food going into our sandwiches!  You will be able to see these wonderful creations when  you come in for parents’ evening.

Our new topic for this term is technologies.  We started by looking at how technology has changed over the past few decades and thinking about how it might change in the future.  We were all surprised at the speed at how things are changing, especially at how small computers are now compared to the very first computers!

On Friday (24th) it is our Scots assembly and next week the children will choose two people from each class to recite their poem in front of the whole school in this assembly. Thank you for your support with learning the poem.

Hello everyone!

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a happy new year! We can’t believe that we’re half way through the school year already!

We are looking forward to welcoming back the boys and girls tomorrow and we are sure they will have lots of news to share with us 🙂

Here is some information for the term ahead:
– PE days: Both classes have PE with Mrs Ferguson on a Wednesday. P4M will have their other session of PE on a Tuesday while P4C will have their second session on a Thursday.

– Homework: This week the children will be given out a non-fiction reading book to read at home. We will also be completing work on non-fiction texts in school. Your child will have this book home for 2 weeks. A Scottish poem will also be in your child’s homework jotter. We will be working on learning and reciting Burn’s poetry in school but would also appreciate if your child could work on this at home too. They will recite their poems to others on the w/b 20th January.

– A visitor from NYCoS (The National Youth Choir of Scotland) will be working with both classes for 8 weeks beginning on Wednesday this week. The children will learn fun new songs and learn different music concepts. Starting next week sessions will take place on a Monday.

– Look out for our class newsletter in your child’s bag this week. Inside is a more detailed outline for the term ahead.

Primary 4 9.12.19

Hello everyone

It is the start of our second last week of term and we are now very busy in the run up to Christmas. Today we are going to watch the P1 nativity dress rehearsal and tomorrow we will watch the P2/3 nativity dress rehearsal. Wednesday is our Christmas party. It will take place all afternoon and children can bring party clothes to school to change into or they can go home for lunch and come back dressed for the afternoon.

In RME we have been learning about the Christmas story. The children learned about King Herod’s role in the story and the importance of this. Through drama the children were able to act as different characters in the nativity story. They could also ask the different characters questions in order to learn more about the nativity story.

In numeracy the children have worked hard to begin learning the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables and their related division facts this term. This week we will begin to work on multiplying larger numbers before revising all that we have learned next week. After the Christmas holidays we will begin to look at fractions in numeracy.

One of our PE days has changed. Indoor PE with Mrs Ferguson will now be on a Wednesday. The other session of PE will continue to take place on Tuesdays. The children have also begun to have Art lessons with Ms Fox on a Wednesday.

Homework was handed out last week for the final time this term. It is due in next Monday 16th December. Starred activities must be completed and the rest are optional.

Primary 4 29.11.19

Hello everyone

We have had a very busy week in Primary 4. We have been working hard on learning our Scottish song for today’s St Andrew’s Day assembly. We were working hard to learn “Bananas are the best” and the children performed very well today. Well done everyone.

Our thoughts now turn towards Christmas. Tonight is the Christmas Fair and we are looking forward to seeing many of you there. The Fair runs from 6 until 8pm and you can buy tickets at the door. In class we have been learning about the Christian story of Christmas. The children learned about the important role that King Herod played in this story and made story boards to showcase their learning.

In school next week we are very excited to watch a Panto in the big hall. We are also looking forward to our delicious Christmas lunch on Tuesday. Remember – if your child has not ordered a Christmas lunch then they should bring a packed lunch to school with them on Tuesday.

Homework is due in on Monday and we will hand out new reading books to some groups and new homework on Wednesday. The next set of homework will be due on Monday 16th December and this will be the last piece of homework before the Christmas holidays. Please remember that only the starred activities must be completed. Thank you.

We would also like to say thank you to all the boys and girls who have already presented their class talks. We can really tell that the children have worked so hard on preparing them. Thank you as well for all of your support in working with the children on these at home. It is very much appreciated. Anyone who has not already presented their class talk will do so next week.

*IMPORTANT*

PE days have now changed. PE with Mrs Ferguson will now take place on a WEDNESDAY instead of a Thursday as before. The other session of PE with Miss Clark and Mrs Muir will still take place on a Tuesday.

The children will also begin to work with Ms Fox on a Wednesday in Art.

P4 update 14.11.19

We’ve had another busy week in primary 4.

We are continuing to work on our persuasive writing techniques and the children have written letters to the European Space Agency to persuade them that children should be allowed to go to space!  They were also very excited when they got the extra break they had asked for in their previous persuasive writing lesson.  The power of persuasive writing!

We are enjoying our space topic and have been amazed by how many interesting and thought-provoking questions the children have been coming up with about space and stars in particular.  We have started learning about the life cycle of a star and have also found out about the eight phases of the moon. This will explain why your child might be very interested in looking at the moon and is making comments like, “That’s a waxing gibbous!” or “That’s a waning crescent!”.

In numeracy we are continuing to work on our times tables and division and this week are working on dividing by 6.  We are getting really good at using our strategies to help us.

Dress Down Day

Don’t forget that we are supporting Children in Need tomorrow with our Dress Down Day.  Children can come dressed in yellow, spots, in their PJs or as a superhero.  If they do, please could they make a donation of at least 50p to Children in Need.

Reminders:

PE is still on a Tuesday and a Thursday but will change in a couple of weeks (we will let you know on the blog).

Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and is to be handed in on the Monday (almost two weeks later). Please could you send in the homework share it jotters and reading books daily however as we will use them in class.

Please provide a water bottle every day.

Primary 4 30.10.19

Hello everyone

We have had a fun, busy week in Primary 4. In numeracy we have been revising our knowledge of the 8 times table and we have introduced division by 8 facts. The children were able to notice the similarities between the times table facts and division facts. We will continue to consolidate this knowledge using a variety of strategies in class.

In writing, we have been continuing to write persuasive letters. This week the children wrote letters to their families at home (keep your eyes peeled for copies of these letters coming home in school bags!) The children’s job was to convince their families to allow them to watch their favourite movie at home. The children had great ideas on how to convince you!

In French Miss Carrigan and Mrs Muir have been teaching the children about weather. The children have revised different weather vocabulary. They have now begun to have a short conversation about the weather including information about the seasons. This was very tricky at first but the children worked very hard to pronounce the different vocabulary correctly. We will continue to work more on this in class.

Tomorrow we will be visiting Craigswood Sports Centre to take part in the local Cluster’s handball tournament. Children should come to school dressed in their PE kit and can stay in their kit for the rest of the day. We are looking forward to watching the children further develop the skills that they have learned with Mrs Ferguson in PE lessons.

Homework is due in tomorrow. Please see the class newsletter that will be coming home shortly for more information about homework. Remember only starred activities need to be completed. Each child should now have a reading book. Please encourage your child to bring their reading book to school each day as we use these during reading lessons. Children also have the opportunity to read their reading pages with a partner, an adult or by themselves each day in class.
