Primary 1 21.1.19

It is another busy week in Primary 1!
Today, in maths, we had a lesson on the months of the year and 4 seasons. Each child made a 2019 calendar drawing a picture to show what happens in each season. We are hoping that they will be ready soon to take home! The rest of the week we will be focusing on finding half of a shape in our maths time. Maybe at home you could practise splitting things into 2 equal parts to give your child extra practice? We will continue to work on subtraction during the week and value any work you can do at home with this.
In phonics, we are consolidating our learning on all the sounds learnt so far. The children will be making and reading words and will practise writing the more tricky letters.
The interdisciplinary dinosaurs topic is now well under way. Each class has made a super dinosaur display in their classroom and many of the play activities around the classroom are dinosaur themed. This week we are focusing on the Pteradactyl. We will learn facts about it throughout the week and on Thursday will write in our dinosaur factfile.
This Friday is our Burn’s Day celebration. On Wednesday every Primary 1 will stand up in front of the class to recite their Scot’s poem. 2 children from each class will then be chosen to perform their poem in front of the whole school on Friday. Please continue to practise the poem at home ensuring that your child speaks loudly and clearly and uses some actions.
Reminders:
PE is on a Thursday morning this term. Please remember to pack a PE kit for this. It would be helpful if the clothes are all named and if you could dress your child in clothes which they can take off and put on independently.
Homework is due in on Tuesdays and will be reissued on Wednesday. Reading books should be in school everyday so that we can read with your child.
Thank you for your continued support
The P1 teachers.

Primary 7 18.01.19

It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm in Primary 7 with regards to their novels. Emotions are running high already as we make connections with our favourite characters and try to understand what it must have been like to live in their time. Each group has been assigned a task from their literacy circle packs and should have it ready for their literacy circle meeting on Wednesday.

We began our auditions for our senior show this week and we were delighted with the number of pupils who put themselves forward. We hope to announce roles by the end of next week.

In numeracy we are continuing to focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and we are studying 2D and 3D shape in math sessions. Do you know what a nine sided shape is called?

We have seen signs of great teamwork this week as the pupils learned and practised their Scottish poems together. All pupils will recite their poems on Monday and Tuesday of next week and the winning class performers will repeat their rendition at our Scottish Assembly next Friday .

Primary 3 18.1.19

Choukie Dog Show Twa-Leggit Mice

This week, we have started to learn about castles. Lots of us have been to real castles so this helped us when we drew and labeled what we thought a castle looked like. Since then, we have learned the real names of the parts of a castle and what they are for.

We have even written an imaginative  descriptive story about what we could see when we stood outside a castle.

We have been learning some new boost words this week. Ask us about them and see whether we can remember what they are and what they mean. Test us to see if we can use the word in a sentence too! We will impress you!

In a few week’s time, we will be hosting a poetry competition in school. The winners will recite their poems at the Scots afternoon for senior citizens who have been invited. We will be sending home words to practise but will also be rehearsing and reciting these in class. The words for the poems can be accessed at the top of this blog post.

Reminders

Please bring appropriate kit on PE days. We will be outside for PE every week and therefore should come prepared, especially for the colder weather. No shorts please. Please check children’s diaries for the correct days.

Please label all clothing brought into school, PE or school uniform, as we have bundles of unclaimed things most weeks which have no names on.

Look out for new GLOW passwords in the back of spelling homework jotters. These should be used in the event of a school closure on snow days and activities will be provided. Please copy these onto something at home so the children can access GLOW at all times, should their jotters still be in school.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Smith, Ms Matheson and Mrs Smith

Primary 1 – week beginning 14.1.19

We have had a busy week in Primary 1 and are very excited by our new dinosaur theme. The responses to Professor Rex’s showed us that the children had a keen interest in finding out more about individual dinosaurs. This week we have been finding out about the Tyrannosaurus Rex and will include facts about him in our individual fact files.

Our dinosaur investigative area is now set up and the children are enjoying free play between all 3 classrooms, exploring the different dinosaur related activities that are on offer. We have been exploring the job of a paleontologist and used toothpicks to pick the chocolate chips from cookies! The children were concentrating so hard and were so focused in this activity.

Some children will have received a key ring with some key words on it for their reading. Please practise these regularly – these are words that may not be phonetic and need to be learnt by sight.

Primary 4 16.1.19

Hello everyone

We have had a lovely week so far in Primary 4. On Monday the children received their Burns Poems home with them. They also have a copy of this poem in school. We will be working on learning and practising these poems in school, however, any support you can give your child at home with this would be greatly appreciated. The children will be reciting their poems to the class next Thursday. We’re looking forward to hearing them! 🙂

Your child also received a reading book home with them. Each week your child should read some pages from this book and this should be indicated and signed if possible on the white sheet in your child’s spelling jotter. Your child can read as many pages as they like each week.

In maths this week we have been working on data handling. We created tables showing information we gathered and also used tally marks accurately. The children now are working on creating a graph out of the information in their tables. These are looking fantastic and we’re looking forward to looking at the finished products. We will move onto looking at Venn diagrams next week.

This week we began doing a word boost activity every morning. Word boost helps the children to develop their use of more complex vocabulary when speaking or writing. This week we have looked at words such as “snaffle”, “teetering” and “turret”. This will continue each morning as the way we start our days in Primary 4 🙂

Reminders –
Spelling homework – Due Friday
Maths board game – To be completed in own time.
Reading for enjoyment – Written in spelling jotter and signed by Monday please.
Burns Poems to be recited next Thursday (24.1.19)
PE days: Outdoor PE – Tuesday
Indoor PE – Wednesday

Thank you for your support.

Primary 2 15.1.19

Primary 2 have been learning about cold countries. We have been investigating the landscape found in cold countries. Children were able to identify icebergs, glaciers, frozen lakes and snowy mountains. We will be conducting a science experiment with ice to see what conditions make it melt.

All of the boys and girls have been given a Scottish poem to learn off by heart. We have been practising these in class but we have also asked the children to practise performing them in front of their family. We will do our poem recital on Wednesday 23rd January in class.

In numeracy we have been using our counting on skills to help us solve missing addends. The children have been working very hard explain their strategies and using the tools in the classroom to help.

The children wrote fantastic stories last Thursday about packing for a holiday. They tried hard to construct sentences properly, use adjectives to describe what they were packing and also shared their feelings about going on a holiday. Super writing P2!

On Monday the children were given new reading books and new activities to complete in their “share it” books. This is due back on Thursday 24th January.

P.E reminders- P2R Tuesday and Wednesday

P2M Wednesday and Thursday

Miss Rafferty and Mrs Muir

Primary 3 – Update 12 January

Happy New Year.

Primary 3 are glad to be back at school and ready to learn about our new topic, which is called ‘Knights and Castles.’ This week we will be looking at how we imagine castles look like and then comparing our drawings with pictures of real castles, looking at the key features. It should be a lot of fun.

Soon a Scots poem will be coming home for homework. All children are expected to learn their chosen poem and then to recite it in class. We will be working on the poems in school as well, so that the children can recite their poem with confidence and expression. Two children from each class will then be chosen to recite their poem at the school  Burns Assembly.

Please could the children remember to bring appropriate gym kit to school? The days that outdoor/ indoor gym kit is required are written in the homework diaries.

Have a great week,

The primary 3 teachers

Primary 7 – 11.01.19

Happy New Year and welcome back to school everyone! We have had a great start to the year with many things kicking off straight away. We have started our new topic on WWII this week with a background of the war and key events that took place. We all found it extremely interesting and have been looking forward to continuing our learning in this topic. If anyone has any accounts of grandparents or great-grandparents that were in the war we will be having an opportunity for these to be told in class. Our school show has got the pupils buzzing with excitement! This year we have a videogame theme and lots of colourful and fun characters for the children to become. At the moment we will all be learning the songs and will be beginning to think about which parts we would like to play. Please be reminded that the main parts will be highly sought after and so pupils must be prepared to audition for the part if required. Swimming has started for P7M and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves at their first session! Thank you to the team at DCHS for organising this for the classes. Don’t worry P7W, it’s your turn next! We will remind you of dates nearer the time. Scottish poems have been given out to each pupil to learn over the coming weeks. These have to be performed to the class on Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd of January. Practise makes perfect so please make sure they are practised at home (although time will be given in class for this too).

REMINDERS – PE – Outdoor Kit Mondays (P7W), Swimming Kit Mondays (P7M), Indoor Kit Tuesday (ALL)

Homework – spelling words will be given on Mondays with homework due on Fridays. We are now concentrating on sentences and will not be expecting the children to complete a spelling activity. Reading – Children have set the amount of pages they must complete each week and will be assigned a task to complete along with it. This will be given out on a Wednesday and is to be completed for the following Wednesday.

Maths – PLEASE REINFORCE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION.

Poetry – Please ensure your child is practising their poem in preparation for Scot’s Week.

Thank for your continued support,

Mrs Wylie, Mrs Muir and Miss Mulhern

Primary 4 11.1.19

Hello everyone

Happy New Year! We hope you have had a happy and restful Christmas and New Year. We were pleased to welcome the children back on Monday and hear all of their news from the holidays!

This week has been a very busy week in Primary 4. P4C welcomed Miss Roscilli to the class. She will be with us for 5 weeks and will be working with Miss Clark and teaching us new and interesting things.

This week the children began reading lessons using their new books. These books are short novels that we will only be working on in school. We will work on these books for 2/3 weeks in class before moving onto a new book. The children will receive additional novels home with them to read for enjoyment. They will read set pages each week as before. Please check your child’s bag on Monday as there will be further information in homework diaries and spelling jotters.

On Monday your child will also receive a Scottish poem home to learn. We will be working on learning these in class but we would appreciate if your child could also practise their poem at home. The children will be asked to say their poem in front of the class wb 21.1.19 and 2 willing participants from each class will be chosen to say their poems in front of the school at our Burns Assembly. Thank you for all your support with this.

In maths this term we will be working on multiplication and division. This week we started by revising our 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables and have been impressed by the children’s knowledge. The children are using many strategies in class to help answer multiplication questions including: counters/cubes, number lines and squares etc. Any help you can give your child to help recall their times table facts quickly and accurately would be greatly appreciated.
Why not try this game if you get the chance?

PE update

Happy New Year! I  was delighted to get back to teaching PE at Carmondean this week especially as our Gold Sport Award flag had been put up in the gym hall. Doesn’t it look great!

Just a wee reminder that PE kit should be brought to school on gym days as it is much easier for pupils to participate fully in PE. Your help with this is greatly appreciated. Please check your child’s class blog for details of when they need PE kit.

And lastly, if there are any parents/guardians who would like to support our Primary 1 PE programme on a Thursday morning until the February  holiday  then please get in touch with the school office. I am running a station based programme and any help/support would be really beneficial to the children. You do not have to have a child in P1 to offer help.

Mrs Ferguson

Primary One 8th January 2019

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to you all.  We hope that you had a lovely break, it was lovely to see all the boys and girls yesterday and hear all their news from their time off.

This term we will be starting a new topic on Dinosaurs.  We will be introducing this this week and finding out what the children already know and what they would like to find out.  We are excited to see all the fun activities that the children will come up with!

This fortnight’s homework and a new Reading book was sent home today.  Can children please bring in book bags every day as at times we get extra Reading practise?

There will be an extra piece of homework sent out this week in preparation for our annual Scot’s poetry competition.  Each child will be given a poem to learn and recite to the class.  We will also be doing work on this in class but we would appreciate your help at home to learn them.

Gym days this term continue to be Tuesday (outdoor) and Thursday (indoor with Mrs Ferguson).

Reminder that the Families Connect coffee morning is on Thursday 17th January at 2.30 and you are all welcome to come and find out more about the Families Connect programme.

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 3 21.12.18

We just want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support in this year so far and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes.

It was so lovely to see so many people at our Christmas gift giving in Primary 3 and the children were so excited to share them with you. They have worked very very hard in the run up to yesterday, getting them redrafted and illustrated in time. We all enjoyed the process of being mini authors and illustrators and it was great to have such a captive audience to share them with, so thank you again. IT certainly kept them busy right up until today!

                      Book reading in full swing!

We have church today to end a busy term, thank you for your donations. I am sure they will be greatly appreciated.

Primary 5 were fantastic teachers this week when they took us outside for outdoor PE. They taught us their own playground games and we thought they were excellent!

Last but not least, thank you to the children for all of your hard work this term. We look forward to seeing you all again in January. Have a fabulous Christmas and holiday.

Miss Smith, Mrs Smith and Ms Matheson

Recording Stars

After performing at the Nursery/Primary 1 Nativity this morning, our choir  went into a recording session to record their performance more professionally. Although the children found recording the different elements separately challenging to begin with, they soon got the hang of it and learned a lot about how the music industry produces finished products . Here are the results:

Primary 6

Congratulations to Primary 6 on a fantastic Assembly! We were light a few members of the year group (get well soon to those who were off!) We covered different countries in Europe on a wizarding tour using Harry Potter to teach all about the history and geography and traditions of Europe. We used different languages including some Italian, we sang Feliz Navidad and we even used some German during Silent Night. They spoke and sang their hearts out and they were thoroughly entertaining, congratulations Primary 6 and thank you very much everyone for your hard work over the last few weeks! A massive thank you to Mrs Harding, Mrs Scott and Mrs Dudgeon for all their help with groups, lines, props, backgrounds and for everything else, we couldn’t have done it without you!

In other P6 news, pupils are busy continuing their artwork based around the Titanic which will be next terms topic. We started number talks last week and have continued to develop and discuss mental maths strategies and we are getting some very interesting and original techniques to problem solving. Our Rainforest reading booklets should now be finished and all the ones not finished should be in on Wednesday. We are impressed with some of the European fact-files that have been filtering in and it’s clear that they have really worked hard on them. Although it was originally today they were due in we decided that because of all the hard work from the pupils for the assembly and because of the level of detail they were going into that the deadline was pushed back to MONDAY to give them the most time to get in their  best possible work.

We went down to the church this week for the Bubblegum n’ Fluff workshop where pupils learned all about the nativity story and were able to create their own Christmas tile decorations. We also had a big discussion about kindness and we created an advent wreath to reflect changes we want to see in the world. We also learned about the story of Hanukkah and the pupils had a great time playing Dreidel.

We hope everyone has a great weekend and are looking forward to the last week of term!

Mrs Hunter & Mr Woodward

Primary 5 14.12.18

Primary 5 have been in the Christmas spirit this week.  We had a fantastic time at our party, we all looked amazing in our party outfits and enjoyed dancing and playing party games.  We also got to watch the infants perform their Nativity plays, which were fantastic.

We are busy writing Christmas adventures using all the writing skills we have learned this term.  We have definately improved in using our core targets and description.

In Maths we completed our work on 3 shapes by making 3D shapes with K Nex. This was a real challenge but we were very creative and managed to make 6 different 3D shapes.

In French we learned vocabulary related to Christmas and made pictures to illustrate our new vocabulary.

We are looking forward to our last week next week where we will have a talent show and lots of other Christmas related tasks to complete.

Mr . Browne, a character from our class novel Wonder, collects precepts which he finds interesting and meaningful . This week primary 7 have written their own precepts and we intend to use them as a classroom display to inspire us as we begin 2019 !

The Christmas spirit continues to flow in Carmondean and primary 7 were privileged to see the lower school nativities this week. We held our talent show auditions and we were thrilled by the quality of the acts. Well done to all who entered and in particular our two finalists who will represent our year on Monday.
