Fun with Probability

We had an introduction to basic work on probability for something a little bit different this week, as we head towards the end of term.  Work in this area also takes in work on Fractions and Information Handling which we are looking at in class just now so the game ‘Blocko’ fitted in well!

Each pair were given a board with sections marked 2 -12 and 12 cubes.  They were asked to arrange the cubes in any way they liked.

Some chose their favourite numbers.
Some placed them randomly.
Some placed one on each number with one extra placed randomly.

They were then told the rules of the game and were given the chance to rearrange their cubes once they had been given the full instructions!  When two dice were rolled, the total of the two numbers would be shouted out and if they had a cube on that number, they could remove it.  The winners would be the first to remove ALL cubes and shout, “BLOCKO!”

Some were happy with their choices and chose to leave them as they were.  Others began to think about our introduction to probability and began to realise that some totals are more likely to be rolled than others, given the number of combinations that can make them.

Random placement but changed as the photo below shows.
This pair thought there would be more likelihood that the totals 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 would be thrown.

We had a couple of competitive games with everyone keen to be the first to remove all their cubes!

For our second run through, we recorded the results we got and displayed them in a Frequency Chart.  We discussed what this tells us about the probability of rolling certain totals and we talked about what surprised us.  We did not expect 3 to be rolled so often given that there is only one way to make it!

It was a fun Maths time! 🎲

Learner Led Event

We hope you received your Learner Led Event invitation in your child’s Diary.  We are looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday 29th from 5:00 – 6:30.  The pupils are excited to show you around!

We have been a little quiet on here recently…so apologies for that!  We have still be really busy though!  It’s been so lovely to have some sunny days and we enjoyed taking time to read outside during ERIC time.

Our World War 2 Topic is well under way!  The children have been finding out about what life was like during this time in History and have been set the task of finding out about their own family’s involvement in the War as part of a Home Learning Task.  We are really looking forward to hearing some special stories!

Our main focus for Writing this term is Functional Writing.  With Mrs Henderson, the class have been looking at the main features of newspaper report writing with the view to creating their own World War reports.

We used real newspapers to spot some key features in report writing.

With Mrs Smith, the class have explored advertising and how writing is used to persuade.  The children have worked with enthusiasm when creating their own brand of cereal.  Their boxes had to include many of the tried and tested ways to influence buyers!  These boxes will be on display for you to see next week!

In Maths, we have been working within the areas of Multiplication and Division and Information Handling.  The pupils have been gathering data from the classes and our local area and have been learning about the different ways this data can be displayed.  Please come and have a look at our results next week!

In the remaining weeks, we hope to enjoy an educational trip to the Shetland Museum to learn more about the War.  We also have a visitor coming to class who is going to help us with our Health and Wellbeing work, talking about First Aid.

Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Dunrossness Primary School was decorated with odd socks this week ready for Down Syndrome Awareness Day!  Many pairs of odd socks, odd shoes and even bare feet were seen today!

We prepared a card and poem for one of our classmates to let her know how lucky we are to have her in our class.  We also learned to sign, ‘If classmates were flowers, we’d pick you!’

We watched a PowerPoint about Down Syndrome and did some activities that helped us realise we are more the same than different.

Finding classmates with the same interests as us.

We learned a lot of facts about Down Syndrome and many thoughtful questions were asked too.  Some we need to find out about but that’s what makes days like these so interesting for us all!  We all learn together!

We watched the song below and talked about its importance.  We decided that it shows just how many jobs a young adult with Down Syndrome can do and that everyone needs to be given a chance in all aspects of life.  We thought that this video can also link to life in school.  If one person is seen to be inclusive, that soon rubs off on all the others watching.

We’ve had a super day!

Good Luck Mr Shannon!

P4/5 have enjoyed having Mr Shannon, a first year student at Aberdeen University, working alongside us for the past five weeks.  He was popular with all the children and he’ll be missed.  We wish him every success as he continues in his teacher training!

Good luck!
For his final afternoon in our class, we introduced Mr Shannon to one of our favourite games, a Space themed Blooket Quiz.

Next Week in P4/5

Good morning all!  We hope you have managed to get outside and enjoy this amazing week of snow we’ve had, in between all those snowy showers!

Next week we have a busy week planned for you!  We hope that Gregory and his team from The Children’s Parliament will be in school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning.  On Tuesday, we will also have a visiting artist in class who will do creative work with you so we would ask that you all bring in an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes.

On Thursday we will be swimming again and we’ll have another session of Boccia to look forward to on Friday!

It’s going to be a busy one!  Hope to see you all soon!  👋

31 Playful Minutes

We are on our second week of our 31 Playful Minutes journey in P4/5.  It’s certainly a much looked forward to part of the week.  Please ask your children to explain to you why we are doing this each week, and why it is for31 minutes!

We plan to stick with our chosen ‘play’ choices for at least another week before deciding if we’d like to try one of the activities some of the others have been choosing or picking a different interest.

Below are some of the things we’ve enjoyed so far….

Always a hit!  Staff like to join in too!

A lovely, quiet area for building a Minecraft world.

Role play in the grocery shop.  They had some
tricky customers this week!

Crafts….from clay to stuffed pigs and paper bag people!

Following our own topical interests and presenting our findings however we choose.

Farms, trucks and tractors!  We even had a friend stop by who couldn’t resist a play!

We have already seen wonderful examples of sharing and cooperating together during these sessions.  Sometimes compromising can be hard at times but a playful environment is a wonderful way to work through these challenges.

Welcome To Term 2!

It was lovely to see everyone back for the start of Term 2 and to hear about holiday adventures both near and far!

This week some of the learning that P4/5 have been involved in has included creating an atmospheric, moonlit sky for a spooky Halloween painting, creating a plan for a story about ‘staying out’ on Halloween night and starting our opening paragraph and in Maths, working with change.

It was very amusing to see some of these activities being carried out in Halloween costumes for our dress-up day!

We’ve also had a change of seating arrangements in the class so we’ve got new friends to work alongside.

Concentrating while mixing and blending colours.
Painting is always a favourite activity in P4/5!
A quiet class, happy at their work!

Opening sentences for Ollie’s ‘Staying Out’ story…

On Halloween Bobby and Miller go camping in the street.  They set down the tent on the grass next to a path.  The grass was wet, soft and damp but they paused.  They heard a noise, a loud noise.  It came closer and closer AND closer.

Opening sentences for Alex’s ‘Staying Out’ story…

It was Halloween and Jeremy and Bob went camping in the forest.  It was a misty and cold night and it was hard to see.  All they had was a small tent, a torch, beans, firewood and matches.  They were sitting next to the fire when suddenly it went out.

Monopoly Maths in fancy dress!
Super group work playing by the rules, working out change and double checking using calculators.

Class Charter

Over the past few weeks, P4/5 have been working together to create our class charter.  We looked together at the Articles listed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and picked out four that we felt were important for our class.  We chose Non Discrimination…Be Ourselves, Be Respectful, Be Safe and Be Healthy.

Our next job was to identify our responsible behaviours under each heading.  Once agreed,  we voted on a theme to display our charter and the most popular idea was a Rainforest theme!

It would be really great if you could spend time talking through the responsible behaviours we have decided on at home too.

Be Ourselves

  • We understand that we all have similarities and we will respect our differences too.
  • Be ourselves…don’t change being you for other people!
  • Take interest in everyone and what they like to do.
  • Include everyone!

Be Respectful

  • Be kind and fair to everyone.
  • Listen to all ideas, even if different from your own.
  • Talk in a polite way to everyone.
  • Treat others how you would like to be treated.

Be Healthy

  • Keep our brains active and our ideas healthy.
  • Let staff know how we are feeling.
  • We will notice if our classmates are struggling and help.
  • Be active!

Be Safe

  • Use equipment at school sensibly.
  • Wear a seat belt on the bus.
  • Follow all the school rules.
  • Treat others with care.

The Duty Bearers were also given a set of responsibilities too.  The children felt these were important to include.

  • Encourage us.
  • Help us to sort out any problems we have.
  • Help us in a small group if we find something tricky.
  • Take us to new places and let us try fun activities indoors and outside.
  • Just be yourselves!
