At the end of Term 2 we had a visit from Barnum at Shetland Arts who brought in real film equipment. We got the opportunity to learn how to use it and create our own short films! We had the best afternoon.
We write 3 times per week, and today we decided to use Ruby to help us create an imaginative story. While she played “The Lost City” on the double bass, we created imaginative stories about of own Lost Cities.
The National improvement for writing project, aims to have pupils write for short amounts of time (15 mins) focussing on personal targets to achieve. Pupils are then given a further 5 minutes to edit and check their work. This is working great in P5/6 where we’re seeing some superb improvements in writing.
P5/6 have worked really hard this term learning about water and how it can change states. We recently learned about salt and how it changes the freezing point of water – so using this knowledge we created our very own ice creams – in only 15 minutes!
In P5/6 this term we are looking at science and how water and other liquids have different states and how they can mix and change states. We learned about density this week, and why things float or sink. we measured the density of 4 different liquids: honey, oil, salt water and fresh water, and with our findings we could then create a layered liquid cake showing the different densities of the liquids.
This term, all pupils will be taking part in gymnastics, starting with mat skills and progressing to apparatus work. Gymnastics is a fantastic way for children to develop confidence, coordination, and strength while working at their own level.
Mat Skills Focus:
Balances
Jumps
Rolls
Handstands
Cartwheels
Apparatus Focus:
Pupils will explore different equipment setups
They’ll be encouraged to create their own ways of moving from one side to the other
This approach supports creativity, problem-solving, and physical literacy.
Everybody loves this term in the gym, so I’m sure their will be plenty to talk about when they get home.
PE Reminder
Please ensure pupils:
Come dressed appropriately on PE days
Have appropriate footwear. Now that the weather is changing, footwear can be changed before PE.
This term, our PE lessons have centred around developing Gross and Fine Motor Skills through football and rugby. Pupils began with football, practising key techniques such as passing, dribbling, and shooting, and learning how to apply these in game situations.
Over the past three weeks, we’ve shifted our focus to rugby, where pupils have been learning essential skills like passing backwards, moving with the ball, and understanding important rules such as staying behind the ball carrier and avoiding forward passes.
To reinforce these skills in a fun and active way, we’ve played a variety of engaging games including:
Canadian Goose – a fast-paced game of ball-stealing and flag-pulling.
Flag Fury – collecting and attaching flags while staying on the move.
Bears and Buffaloes – racing to score tries while dodging defenders.
Great Escape – escaping defenders without losing a tag.
Rugby Freeze Tag – tagging and freeing teammates with high fives.
Inside the Raven’s Nest – a team challenge to collect and protect rugby balls.
The pupils found the football work more challenging. It has been nice to watch them grow in confidence throughout the rugby sessions.
