# Busy builders

This has been a busy week for building in P1/2!

We were all very proud of the children who managed to fit the blocks back in the box at tidy up time (except for a few shapes that simply couldn’t fit in!) Well done everyone!

# Bookbug Primary 1 Family Bag

We hope you are all enjoying your book bag that has been provided by the Scottish Book Trust, as part of the Read, Write, Count campaign.   Once again, the bags contain lovely stories, which we’ve been sharing in school too.  They also have activities and resources to help promote early language and maths skills.  If you want help working in some fun reading, writing and counting activities, there are lots of super ideas on the website below.

We were thrilled to see Rohan putting his book bag to use at home straight away!  Well done!

# Number Fun!

P1 have been busy counting and learning how to write some numbers over the past couple of weeks. Numbers 2 and 3 are quite tricky so we had fun making them in lots of different ways. We are in the middle of making our own number line too to hang up in the classroom.

# Traffic Survey

As part of our Maths work on information handling, we wrapped up warm and went to the top of the road to record all the different types of transport that passed by.  We used tally marks to help us keep count.  We were delighted to see something from each type on our sheet.  We even saw some of our parents and grandparents go by!  Here are some of our photos.  We hope to share some more with you at our P1/2 Assembly in a few weeks.

# Shape and Symmetry

For our end of term Maths assessment task, the pupils have enjoyed creating robots that have control panels that can be changed.  The first control panel we made had to have a repeated 2D shape pattern.  Some pupils chose to colour the patterns in order too.  The second control panel needed to show symmetry.  This was harder and some pupils took a couple of attempts to get this right.  Symmetry has also been worked on at home  where pupils created symmetrical butterfly patterns and also as our Maths Task this week.  Some great symmetrical patterns were created.  Look at some of the super work that has been completed by P1/2!

# 2D Shape

Today small groups have worked around different 2D shape stations.  They were busy playing a shape game with Mrs Sutherland where they had to spot shapes in the environment.  Some had to create and continue repeating patterns and in pairs, they worked on describing shapes for their partner to guess.  The final station asked them to create 2D pictures and patterns on an iPad and count how many of each shape was used.  Everyone enjoyed the Maths session today!

# Maths – Measurement

Today during Maths time, we have been exploring length.  We have been measuring to show “longer than” and “shorter than”.

# Well done Georgia!

We love to hear how you are getting on with your learning out with the school too.  We were delighted to be sent these photos of Georgia enjoying doing her capacity homework outside in the fresh air.  Keep up the good work Georgia!

# Primary 2 – Afternoon Activities

Primary 2 have been enjoying their quiet afternoons but are looking forward to helping P1 settle into full days next week.  P2 have been reading in groups and working together on alphabet tasks.  They’ve been really keen to start their spelling tests and dictation work … just like P2 last year and have been learning how we need to set this out in our jotters.  They have worked together on practical capacity work in Maths and have been developing their estimation skills.  Topic work has been centred around lessons on Our Body and we’ve been keeping our bodies fit in class PE.

# Active Maths

The end of term is fast approaching but we’re still busy working on our Maths.  Some pupils had to work together to choose a starting number and write the following numbers in sequence.  Then they had to work together to find the number that was half way between and mark it in a special way.  That seemed to be the easy part!  There was a lot of discussion and negotiations to be worked through first but we got there in the end.

The rest of the class were working out number problems and after being given a total to make, they had to find a partner who would help them make that total.  They also had to choose the correct plus or minus sign to go with their sums.
