Looking back at our P1/2 goals

Today we have been looking back at the goals we set at the beginning of the year.  It was good fun to look back at our writing and drawings – especially for P1.  Such a lot has changed over the course of the year and it’s so encouraging to see the growth of all the pupils.  We’ve been updating our progress – thinking about whether we’ve achieved our goals, how we did it and what we still need to work on to get us there.  Look out for this being sent home over the next few days.  Well done P1/2!

SPORTS DAY

What a super sports day!  Primary 1/2 were so well behaved all day and waited very patiently for their turn to run.  When it came to their events, everybody joined in and gave everything they had!  I am so proud of all your achievements and Mrs Henderson would be too!  Thank you to all those who came to support us throughout the day and cheer us on.  We’ll all sleep tonight!

Active Maths

The end of term is fast approaching but we’re still busy working on our Maths.  Some pupils had to work together to choose a starting number and write the following numbers in sequence.  Then they had to work together to find the number that was half way between and mark it in a special way.  That seemed to be the easy part!  There was a lot of discussion and negotiations to be worked through first but we got there in the end.

The rest of the class were working out number problems and after being given a total to make, they had to find a partner who would help them make that total.  They also had to choose the correct plus or minus sign to go with their sums.

Outdoor Education Day – 18th May

Thanks to the glorious Shetland weather, we were able to do all our planned activities today!  We started off at the Boddam play park to do an experiment on forces.  Then, in groups, we had to show forces at work using the play equipment.  After some time inside looking at Electricity with Mr Rose, it was back outside to do a spot of reading before we joined the rest of the school on our whole school walk.  A full day of learning and fresh air!

P1/2 Bucket Filling Assembly

Well done to P1/2 this morning!  You all performed brilliantly and should be so proud of yourselves!  Thank you to our super audience for so willingly joining in.  Thanks to our friends and families for helping us prepare at home and for supporting us on the day.  Thanks to John and Mrs Inkster too.  Can we do it all again?

Forces – Magnetism

We enjoyed another visit from Mr Rose on Thursday 11th May.  He spoke to us all about magnets and magnetism and the “invisible” force they use to attract certain types of metals.  We learned the word, “repel” and used the magnets to test out how this felt.  We had fun working with our partners and testing objects around the class.

Inara slowly moves her magnet closer until her paper clip is attracted to it.
We tested lots of objects around the classroom. We were surprised at some of the results we got.

Toys from the past

On Tuesday 2nd May we visited the Shetland Museum to learn about toys from the past. Yvonne showed us around and took us on a journey through time, starting with the Vikings. We saw miniature oil lamps which were thought to be used by children in their pretend games, just like children do today when playing with pretend kitchens etc.

We also saw examples of board games with chess like figures, dice and whistles. Most items were made from bone or stone but it was interesting to see that many things are still played with today, just made from different materials.

Then we moved on to seeing what it was like to live in an old croft house in Shetland. Children used small fish bones to make their own toys and pretend games. They also went guising, but wore very different costumes to those worn by children today!

After that we had a look at what life was like for wealthy people in Victorian times. Their toys were expensive and very different to the toys we had just seen!

Time for a quick snack and then we got to explore some toys from more recent times. It was great fun!

Thank you again to our parent helpers who joined us on the day.
