This week we have been thinking about how we can support the new P1 pupils as they get ready for school. The class thought back to when they started their school journey and we talked about all the things the new entrants may be unsure of or worried about. We drew and wrote down some pieces of advice for them and our work will be made into a book for them to look through before the holidays. We hope it helps them feel confident about starting school! Here are some of our suggestions.
These past few weeks we have been finding out about different ways we can collect, sort and record information during our Maths time, Topic work and also in our free choosing time. Please look at some of the activities we’ve been part of. 😊
We played a game where we had to match colours and pictures.
P2 went around the classes to gather information about favourite animals.
Tally marks were used to keep track of how many votes each animal received.
Tally marks are a great way of helping us learn to count in 5’s too!
Honey counted the coloured Compare Bears and then made a graph using cubes to show how many of each colour there were.
Jessica sorted past and present pictures into a venn diagram for our Topic work.
Peter counted domino spots and sorted them into a Carroll Diagram.
Sorting by colour…
This Carroll Diagram also helped our adding skills.
Play is a really important part of our P1/2 class. The children have free choice during Task time to learn through their play. Play opportunities provided in our class often relate to the learning taking place that week or developing a specific skill but also takes account of their interests. Play opportunities are changed regularly, with some activities being left out longer if they prove popular! We are encouraging the children to suggest what they would like to play with so we can cater for their interests. Have a look at the play activities set out for this coming week…
P1 have been working on capacity in Maths. This activity is helping to reinforce finding “half”. They also have the opportunity for free water play, pouring, filling and estimating how many.
A popular Task! Park the cars by working out the sum or counting. The children can also create their own sums to match the answers on the cars.
We are going to start letter writing. This task asks the children to create questions they might use in a letter. They will use question words to start their sentence and a ? to finish it.
P1/2 will always do a Task if they think we need their help!
Fine motor skills are being developed as we use the tweezers to feed the chicks some worms.
Imaginative role play in our school classroom!
P2 have been working on number to 100. Our 100 chart lets them find missing numbers, practise counting backwards and forwards and lets them explore the number sequences they have been learning.
This week we have been focusing on Easter. Mrs Henderson introduced the Easter story earlier in the week and the children sequenced the story to retell it. They made Easter cards and had the opportunity to choose Easter Tasks during their free time. Today we spoke about Good Friday and Easter Sunday and how some of the things we do at Easter time are linked to the story. We were lucky enough to be visited by the Easter Bunny today and were left clues to find our hidden baskets! We also did a spot of egg rolling to end our day! 🙂

Easter card weaving.
Logan found an envelope where we left our empty baskets.
Looking high and low in the Library!
Ella found clue number 2!
Kirsty read out the clue she found in the paper tray.
Good reading Scott!
Honey found the art room clue.
Jessica and Alexander worked together to work out the next clue.
The Easter Bunny made it up to the office. Where could it be?
We have really enjoyed our reading sessions over the past few weeks. The children have got much better at choosing suitable books and have tried really hard to persevere and sound out tricky words. They enjoyed reading different types of books…but the Oxford Reading Tree stories were still a firm favourite! The P1 pupils loved having the chance to spend time reading with their buddies. They were very patient and supportive. A huge thank you to our volunteers who came in each week to help us. You were a great help and we appreciate it! Happy holidays and….keep on reading!
A busy ERIC time – Everyone Reading In Class
Rohan records his title.
Ready to read with our buddies!
Holly was a great helper!
All reading together!
One popular book was one all about a chicken who got chicken pox!!
Tryphena listens to Scarlett.
Junias helped Ruby understand some of the meanings of words as she read.
Innes read a Dick King Smith novel!
Archie and Alexander read outside in the quiet area.
Freya got through so many books! Ryan couldn’t believe what a P1 can do!
Today, we were a little nervous but there was also a lot of excitement as the time for our performance neared! P1/2 put on a brilliant show which included acting out The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark, talking about our own experiences of the dark, showing photos of our own constellation shapes and singing and playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. They ALL performed brilliantly! We missed having Kirsty and Peter with us though. The class have done so well considering some have missed rehearsals due to illness and others have had to change role at the last minute, or take on extra lines. Thank you to our families for helping at home and coming to support us on the day. It means so much to the children and us! Here are a few snaps from our afternoon!
Arthur introduces our Assembly.
Our narrators – Innes, Arthur and Jessica. What a good job they did!
Plop and the little boy.
Daddy Owl finishes a hard night out hunting and makes his way home to a sleepy Plop and Mummy Owl.
Our owl family.
Plop lands with a bounce in front of the old ladies!
What do you think of the dark?
The camp fire boys say dark is fun!
The little girl said Santa won’t come unless it’s dark!
Thank you to everyone who came to school with their odd socks today. In the afternoon, we all showed off our footwear and, more importantly, spoke about why we need to raise awareness of this genetic condition. With the help of watching some Newsround clips and talking together, I hope we helped to spread the message of this year’s campaign…leave no one behind.
P1/2 have been working really hard to learn their lines and we’re just about ready for Friday! We’ve had a few last minute changes due to illness but P1/2 are taking everything in their stride as usual!
We really hope you can come this Friday at 1:40 and stay for tea and a look around afterwards.
Primary 1/2 will be doing ERIC time (Everyone Reading In Class) on Thursday and Friday morning (14.3.19 & 15.3.19) from 9:30 – 10:00. If any parent helpers are free for that half hour and would like to come and join in with our reading time, we’d be glad to see you! Just leave me a message in the comments box if you can come. Thanks!
What a brilliant end to a busy week! We all had a superb morning celebrating with our P7 Jarl Squad (and the official SMUHA Jarl Squad). Here are just a few photos. The bright, joyful colours and happy faces sum up our day! Until next year….
