River tweed trip

We had a great time collecting and identifying invertebrates on Wednesday with Patrick from the Tweed Foundation.  We were able to use the nets to collect samples and keys to identify what we had found.  We can’t wait to go back next week!

P4A Science experiment

We have been learning about microorganisms. This week we did an experiment with yeast. Here is the information if you want to do the experiment at home.

Resources:

  • Small bottle (with lid)
  • 10g fresh or dried yeast
  • 30ml warm water
  • 10g sugar
  • Thermometer
  • Balloon

Activity:

Yeast is a living organism that needs food (carbohydrate) and oxygen to respire. This can be demonstrated using simple materials.

  1. Warm the water to around 38°C (check with a thermometer).
  2. Pour the water into the bottle.
  3. Add the yeast and sugar.
  4. Secure the lid and shake the bottle to mix the contents.
  5. Remove the lid and stretch a balloon over the neck of the bottle.
  6. Put this in a warm place.
  7. Observe the bottle over the next hour. The balloon should slowly inflate.
